Wildlands Network specialists warn that only 10.6% of the state's surface is under some legal protection scheme, such as Natural Protected Areas, voluntary conservation areas or priority wetlands. The recommendation of the International Union for Conservation of Nature is to reach 30% of the planet's surface area protected by 2030. This report was updated to a second edition in February 2023 to contemplate the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework as well as a new established National Protected Area within Sonora.
