The college is the lead further education partner in the GMIoT. Institutes of Technology are government-backed initiatives providing high quality Level 4 and 5 technical qualifications, through a network of partnerships with education providers and employers. They provide education and training in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects to upskill students to meet employers’ needs. Backed by £290 million government investment, they deliver the best in technical education. DEGREE WITH A DIFFERENCE Our technical qualifications provide all you need to develop the practical skills to prepare for a career in industry. You can study a two-year full-time programme, such as an HND or foundation degree and then add a top-up year to complete the degree. Flexibility means that if you’re a mature student who wants to fit your studies around work and family commitments, you can study part-time, stepping on and off programmes rather than committing to a three-year course, and you’ll still receive a degree once you complete.

Higher National Certificate (HNC) A Level 4 qualification for progression to higherlevel study. This may form the first year of the HND.

Top-up degrees One-year full-time programmes or two years part-time to follow HND, FdA and HTQ for the full Bachelor of Arts, Science or Engineering.

Higher National Diploma (HND) Typically a two-year full-time commitment and three years part-time for a Level 5 award, or maybe a follow-on year after HNC.

Post-graduate Level 7 Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Further Education and Skills Sector) (PGCE) for aspiring teachers, or those working in other education settings.

Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ) A one or two year commitment for a Level 4/5 award, specifically developed with employers. Foundation degree (FdA) A two-year commitment for a Level 5 award. You can progress to to a one-year top-up for the full honours degree. 14

Professional qualifications Management and professional qualifications include those awarded by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) such as the AAT Level 4 Diploma.

RETURN TO LEARN Access to Higher Education Diplomas These courses are a route to higher education for you if you’re 19 or over and don’t have the traditional entry requirements, such as A Levels or Level 3 vocational qualifications. Most universities recognise them as entry qualifications. You can progress to a range of degrees: nursing; midwifery; social sciences; paramedic; social work and health sciences.

Paying for your Access to HE Diploma Many don’t have to pay the full course fees, as funding, fee remission and loans are available, depending on circumstances. If you’re aged 19-23 and don’t have a full Level 3 qualification, the course may be free. If you do have a full Level 3 qualification then you can apply for funding through the Lifelong Learning Entitlement. This doesn’t have to be paid back if you go to university and complete your degree.

HIGHER AND DEGREE APPRENTICESHIPS We work with a range of employers to offer higher and degree apprenticeships, including Sellafield Ltd and SP Electricity North West. Apprenticeships can combine a degree, and HNC/D, HTQ or a foundation degree, with the practical skills gained in the workplace and the financial security of an annual salary and job satisfaction. OUR CAMPUSES Parsons Walk Campus The campus is undergoing an exciting transformation, with significant investment creating new and enhanced spaces for teaching, learning and student life.

Centre for Advanced Technical Studies You’ll study health, education, digital technologies, esports, and civil engineering at our centre in Wigan’s historic Rushton Building. The site also features the CAVE — a shared immersive environment where you and your classmates can explore virtual scenes and 360° content through wall and floor projection.

Centre of Excellence in Engineering & Construction (Pagefield Campus) We’ve invested millions to expand and upgrade specialist laboratories in analogue and digital electronics, industrial control, power and renewables, automation and robotics, and fluids and thermodynamics. The campus reflects industry environments, with the latest technology for mechanical engineering and sustainable energy.

Leigh Adult Learning Centre We offer study options designed for learners aged 19 and above, conveniently located, with parking, at Walmesley Road, Leigh. We hold the HND Counselling and Applied Psychology (Integrative) course here in the Centre of Excellence in Health and Social Care. We’ve specialist counselling rooms, and wellbeing suites as well as social care facilities. We also offer Access to Higher Education Diplomas here too.

Leigh Campus The Leigh Sports Village campus is home to our specialist Sporting Hub, where you’ll access world-class facilities. This is where we deliver the practical elements of the HND Sport & Exercise Science, alongside full delivery of the HNC/D Animal Management courses — giving you hands-on learning in a professional environment.

OUR LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRES Our Learning Resource Centres are based at our Parsons Walk, Pagefield and Leigh Campuses. As well as a library service, the centres offer much more, including: • A dedicated space for higher education students (Parson's Walk and Pagefield) • Quiet, silent or group study zones • WiFi access, including guest WiFi and ‘Bring Your Own Device’ compatibility • College ID card printing • Affordable stationery and USB drives

If you’re studying a qualification awarded by the University of Lancashire you can also access learning resources and facilities at their campus in Preston. Edge Hill University students have access to their resources at the Ormskirk campus. If you want to represent students’ views on their course or anything about the University Centre community, you could become a Student Rep. Reps attend regular HE Student Forum meetings to share feedback on the overall experience of being a student here.

Apply to be a student governor and you'll attend meetings of the College Board of Governors to reflect the views of students at the highest decision making level. You can input students’ opinions and thoughts on projects, initiatives and strategy at the planning stage.

STUDENT VOICE Use your voice to share the issues that might be affecting you and your peers, forging a working relationship with students and staff.

RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM The annual Research Symposium is a fantastic opportunity to develop your presentation skills, showcase your research, and celebrate achievements with fellow students, staff, and guest speakers. The event also features a dedicated HE Careers Fair, giving you the chance to demonstrate your research and skills directly to potential employers.

PASSPORT TO LEARNING Last year's University Centre students had the opportunity to go on educational trips abroad. These experiences were subsidised by the University Centre Advantage Scheme, a unique fund available if you pay full-time course fees, or the part-time equivalent. Business students explore Prague HND Business students journeyed to the Czech capital, taking a closer look at operational management at the Skoda Factory. The group also visited the national bank, and enjoyed some tourist attractions, including a brewery and river tour. Active fun in the sun Our HND Sport & Exercise Science students experienced some warm weather training at Club La Santa in Lanzarote. The group explored different fitness classes from aerial yoga, cycling, padel, pilates and more.

Graphic Design take on Berlin Our FdA Creative Industries and BA (Hons) Creative Practitioner students enjoyed an educational visit to the German capital. They visited one of Europe's most highly awarded independent design agencies, Innocean Berlin to learn about their approach to branding and gain industry insight. They also visited historic landmarks such as Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg Gate.

Croatian adventure for Public Services HND Public Services travelled to Croatia to take on thrilling activities such as zip lining and sea kayaking. They also enjoyed some cultural enrichment, exploring Dubrovnik old town and the Game of Thrones tour. 23

INVESTING IN YOUR FUTURE Our courses are a fraction of the price of the average cost of national university study. Most charge over £10,000 per year, compared with our £7,500* for full-time courses. Part-time course fees are calculated on a pro rata basis. Tuition fee loans Subject to eligibility, you can take out a tuition fee loan for each year of your course paid directly to us, so you have no upfront fees. Maintenance loans You don’t need to be living in student accommodation for this. You can apply for a maintenance loan to help cover expenses, such as travel or parking fees. The amount depends on your household income. This loan is paid directly to you in three instalments. You don’t start paying back your student loan until you’ve left university and earning over the government threshold. Your monthly repayments are based on your earnings, not on how much you’ve borrowed. Additional funds are available for you if you have a disability or have children. You may get help if you’ve been in care or are estranged from your family. You’ll make repayments if your income is more than £25,000 a year, £2,083 a month or £480 a week. 24

If you are studying an eligible Higher Education course from September 2027, you will apply for student finance through the Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE). The LLE is a new government funding system for Level 4–6 qualifications, including HNCs, HNDs and degree programmes. It has been designed to give learners greater flexibility, allowing funding to be used for full qualifications or smaller units of learning that can be built up over time. Eligible learners may be able to access tuition fee and maintenance support, subject to the latest government eligibility criteria. FEES AND FUNDING Access to Learning Fund You could get extra money that you don’t need to pay back if you’re in financial hardship and need support to start or stay in higher education. This funding can help with unexpected costs or ongoing money worries while you study. Full or part-time students who are in receipt of a maintenance loan and have a household income of £35,000 or below and are eligible to apply.

Free School Meal Bursary At our university centre, we are committed to supporting students from all backgrounds. If you were eligible for free school meals in high school you may qualify for our dedicated bursary scheme. This includes a contribution to access free meals on your study days, helping to ease financial pressures and ensure you can focus fully on your studies. This initiative is part of our wider commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive.

GRADUATION Our annual graduation ceremony is the perfect celebration of your time at the University Centre with the opportunity to share achievements with family, friends and staff. Held at The Edge, Wigan, the ceremony provides a brilliant backdrop for a wonderful occasion. YOUR LEARNING If you want to make a positive difference to the lives of children and young people, this course will help you build the knowledge, skills and confidence to do just that. Whether you want to work in early years, schools, family support or children's services, you'll explore how to support the development, learning and wellbeing of children and young people aged 0–19. Hayley Hughes

After completing her AAT Level 4 Diploma with us, Hayley Hughes was able to progress in her career at Wigan Council, becoming a Senior Finance Consultant. “The class size was amazing. We were all of a similar age and came from similar work backgrounds. It was a great mix of people to bat experience off. I’ve learned about the principles and underlying reasons of why finance is the way it is. It’s underpinned things like financial regulations.” Hayley is now studying for her Level 7 AAT qualification and hopes to become a Group Finance Manager in the future.

UCAS TARIFF If you’re applying for a university course you need to be aware of the system higher education providers use to compare different qualifications or tariff points. You can find the University Centre’s specific tariff points on individual course pages (where applicable). What does the UCAS tariff mean? You’re awarded points for the grades you achieve at A Level, T Level, BTEC Diploma or BTEC Extended Diploma. HOW TO APPLY FULL-TIME COURSES Apply through UCAS (Universities & Colleges Admissions Service) at www.ucas.com. Use the institution code W67. If you meet the entry criteria and we offer you a place we’ll invite you to enrol in August.

Existing Students If you’re applying through the UCAS service to other universities, then you must select Wigan & Leigh College as one of your options if you wish to put an application in with us. If you are not using the UCAS service, pick up an application form from Fab Futures.

PART-TIME COURSES If you want to study part-time at the University Centre, apply online or contact us on 01942 761111 for an application form. Once you have received an offer we’ll invite you to enrol in January or August depending on whether you are a January or September starter.

WIDENING ACCESS AND PARTICIPATION We work in partnership with Greater Manchester Higher to deliver activities that raise aspirations and inspire students to aim higher. From hands-on workshops and guest talks to campus visits and taster sessions, these programmes give young people the chance to experience higher education first-hand, build confidence, and explore exciting future opportunities.
