FEES & FINANCE Many of our adult courses are fully funded so you pay nothing. If there are fees then you have options including fee waivers, Advanced Learner Loans and Higher Education Student Loans. You can find all the fees in the course tables of this guide, this is the cost for the whole course. We'll ask you to pay any course fees when you enrol. (Higher Education courses are an exception - in some cases, fees for these courses may be paid annually.) We accept cash and all major credit/debit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Switch, and Delta. You can also set up a Standing Order at enrolment (bring your bank account details). The minimum monthly payment is £25.00 for courses costing over £100. Is your employer paying your course fees? Bring a letter of authorisation from them to enrolment and we’ll issue an invoice to them for payment. We print this guide in advance of the courses starting so fees can sometimes change.
ADVANCED LEARNER LOAN You can find out more about Advanced Learner Loans on page 38 of this guide. You can start your loan application at enrolment, bring your passport (if you have one) and your National Insurance Number.

WIGAN COUNCIL COURSES AT COMMUNITY VENUES
We work in partnership with Wigan Council to offer courses at community venues as well as college campuses. Wigan Adult Learning and Skills is part of Wigan Council, offering bespoke opportunities for you to return to learning or update your qualifications.
LEARNING TIMES AND DATES You can start learning all year round and don’t have to be limited to term times. Depending on the course, you may study a couple of days over a few weeks, or once a week over a longer time.
LEARNING LOCATIONS AND VENUES The Council’s main Learning Hub is Wigan Life Centre North, in the town centre. They also offer courses in community venues and Family Hubs across the borough, in Atherton, Leigh, Hindley, Ince and Platt Bridge.

WHAT YOU CAN LEARN ENGLISH AND MATHS are essential skills to secure a new job, move on to a further education course, or even to help your child at home with their school work. We offer nationally recognised Functional Skills qualifications up to Level 2 (this is the level most employers and colleges require and is the same skills level as GCSE A-C grade). English and Maths courses are tailored to your level at a pace, venue and time to suit you and your family, and are always free. Our BTEC Level 1 Awards are aimed at learners who wish to achieve a Level 1 qualification in preparation for future study and work. The courses allow you to focus on the development of transferable and sectorrelated skills. We can also offer direct links to Wigan Council teams who can support you with future employment opportunities and provide guaranteed interview opportunities.

FREE DIGITAL AND ICT courses are designed to meet everyone’s needs and skills level. From basic IT & Digital Skills to fully accredited Entry Level 3 and Level 1 Essential Digital Skills courses, there is something for everyone. All learners will need to take a short initial assessment before starting a Digital, English or Maths course Please contact us for further information. TEACHING ASSISTANT We offer a Level 2 Teaching Assistant qualification, ‘Supporting Teaching and Learning’, with entry points in September or January, with a new fast track course being introduced in September. Due to our strong links with recruitment agencies, you will be guaranteed interviews when you’re ready to apply for jobs at the end of your course. Many learners have secured permanent roles in local schools.

GET WORK READY PRE-EMPLOYMENT & PRE-APPRENTICESHIP PATHWAYS
Our pre-employment programmes are designed to help you take your next step into work, an apprenticeship, or further training. In partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions, Wigan Council and local employers, we deliver Sector-Based Work Academy Programmes (SWAPs) throughout the year. These courses are tailored to meet local job opportunities and give you the skills employers are looking for including, developing your CV, improving interview skills and getting up-to-date with technology for work. You can access opportunities in a range of sectors, including: • Health and Social Care • Construction and Grounds Maintenance • Residential Childcare • Customer Service within the NHS • Manufacturing and Warehousing Courses run at different times across the year, with new opportunities added regularly based on employer demand.

A NEW START IN THE NHS Mental health struggles left Billy unemployed for four years before his work coach encouraged him to join our SWAP programme, which supports adults into employment with Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust. “It really felt like a sliding doors moment for me and an opportunity I really needed to grasp,” said Billy. Through this sector-accredited programme, Billy completed an initial course at college to build confidence and get prepared for available roles within the NHS. He went on to complete a work placement and was guaranteed an interview at the end of the programme.

“Before I started the programme, I was a very reserved, shy person. The interaction and the opportunity really boosted my confidence and then having to go into college and the placement gave me structure and a sense of purpose.” Now, Billy has secured employment in the NHS as a recruitment assistant. He said: “I’m forever thankful for the opportunity because I feel it’s improved my mental health. It’s given me a better positive attitude on life, and I feel I’ve improved just on a personal level too.”

Do you dream of going to university but don’t have the entry qualifications? An Access to HE Diploma could be your route to degree study. If you’re committed to setting aside time to achieve the right level of academic development to progress to university, this may be the option for you.
Do you want to study the Access to Higher Education (HE) Diploma to progress to University? Don’t quite have the right qualifications to start right away? Don’t worry…….we have a Pre-Access programme designed to prepare you for Access to HE.
Access to HE Diploma programmes are recognised by universities across the UK. You may progress to a range of degrees including: nursing; midwifery; social sciences; paramedic; social work and health sciences.
The programme is designed around your current qualifications and your level of maths and/ or English, tailored to the pathway you wish to progress to.
Courses are a route to higher education for adults aged 19 and over, who may not have the traditional entry requirements, such as A Levels or Level 3 vocational.

ACCESS COURSE AIDS NURSING SUCCESS Imoh Nze joined our Access to HE Diploma (Health Sciences), wanting to progress in her career after working as an NHS healthcare assistant for ten years. “I want to take that next step up and become a mental health nurse. I’m ready to go in there and help people.” Imoh already held a Level 3 qualification but, because she’d been out of education for 14 years, she chose the access course to build her confidence back before going to university. “At the start I was struggling but I kept pushing and now I can do everything. I can present, I can do assignments, I can reference and make citations. I’ve never missed a class and I really enjoy it.” Imoh has had multiple university offers and plans to study BSc (Hons) Nursing (Mental Health) at Edge Hill next year. “I would recommend that everyone does access before university. I enjoy everything about the course, it gives you the confidence to do anything.”
PAYING FOR YOUR ACCESS TO HE DIPLOMA Many students don’t have to pay the full course fees as funding, fee remission and loans are available, depending on your circumstances. If you’re aged 19-23 and don’t have a full Level 3 qualification, then the course may be free. If you do have a full Level 3 qualification or are 24 or over then you can apply for the Advanced Learner Loan. This doesn’t have to be paid back if you go to university and successfully complete your chosen degree. For more details on the Advanced Learner Loan see page 38

NOW IS TONY'S TIME BUILDING A CAREER IN CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT Having joined a youth training scheme with a local builder at 16, Tony Woolley always had an interest in construction. This led to a job at Manchester Metropolitan University as a Multi Trade Operative, progressing to become a Maintenance Supervisor. The 51-year-old decided to return to study at the University Centre Wigan & Leigh College to advance his career in the construction industry. “To be able to further my career at MMU in Capital projects I would need to complete an HNC in construction management. FROM CORPORATE TO CREATIVE Louise, 60, joined our Level 1 NCFE Award in Creative Crafts to reconnect with her love for art after a long hiatus. “I went to art college about 40 years ago, but life carries you away. My parents wanted me to get a ‘proper job’ and I ended up working in corporate. I picked this course because it was part-time and it’s a ‘start again’ course for me. You try things you haven’t done before and experiment. There’s no pressure, you’re exploring yourself and your own creativity.” Now, Louise has found a passion for illustrating and has even been offered an exhibition space in Wigan as well as enjoying preparations for the college End of Year Show. “I thought I couldn’t draw anymore, how wrong I was. I recommend this course to anyone, especially older people who may have got lost in life - it’s a fantastic course to come back to.”

A CAREER REFIT: RETAIL TO PLUMBING

Retail worker, Janis Somers, proves it’s never too late to change careers, coming back to college to study on our Plumbing Level 2 Diploma. Janis knew he wanted to pursue a trade due to his love of problem solving and fixing small jobs in his own home. He now studies three days a week alongside his full time job, saying: “It’s a big commitment but when you put the time in, it’s okay, you just need to plan and be disciplined. Discipline equals freedom. I had doubts at first because my confidence wasn’t there but as soon as I did practical work and saw results, I believed in myself. The teachers always help me, they always have a solution and real-life experience, it’s not just theory.” After completing this course, Janis hopes to gain a Level 3 qualification or an apprenticeship. His advice to other adults thinking of retraining is: “Don’t be afraid. There’s always help and the teachers are really good. It’s never too late, it’s manageable to work and study.”

CALLED TO COUNSELLING Aimie Bamber was drawn to retrain as a counsellor through her experience working as a carer in supported living and homecare and involvement in youth work at church. “It was a dream; I didn’t know if I had what it takes but here I am now.” She joined our HND Counselling and Applied Psychology (Integrative) - awarded by Pearson, completing her placement hours at Daylight Counselling where she works with six clients weekly. “I enjoy learning new skills to put them into practice with my counselling clients now. It’s given me loads of confidence. I enjoyed studying ethics, it’s all about problem solving and how we’d overcome certain situations ethically to protect our clients.” So far, Aimie is the first person in her cohort to reach 175 placement hours and has set her own personal goal to reach 200 before the end of the course. “Every teacher has been great and approachable. I’m dyslexic and they’ve printed things on coloured paper and changed the colour of screens to help me and I appreciate it.”
NOW IS AIMIE'S TIME
After gaining her qualification, Aimie will continue to work for Daylight Counselling as an official counsellor and has already been given full-time counselling hours for Children and Youth Services in the Manchester Diocese.

IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH AND MATHS Each year we transform the lives of hundreds of adults by helping them gain essential skills and qualifications in English and maths. Most of the time we don’t think about English and maths, but we use these skills all the time: ▶ At home - paying for bills, reading letters, helping your child with their homework or recipes, or even booking holidays. ▶ At work - communicating with colleagues, customers or calculating wages. ▶ In our social life - paying for shopping or petrol, sharing a bill in a restaurant, or reading a menu. COMMUNITY CHAMPION MAKES STRIDES WITH ESOL Formerly a Pharmacy Technician and Music Teacher, Alireza Elahaei Saher moved to the UK from Iran a year and a half ago and joined our ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) course. “English language is key to finding a good job. I want to find a career as a pharmacy technician and have to start at the bottom of the ladder again. It takes time.” Alireza has been pushing himself to improve his English both in, and outside the classroom as he volunteers at The Brick Charity Shop, Rebuild with Hope Community Hub and looks after children in Hindley, teaching them music. “I moved to Wigan alone and didn’t know anyone. Coming to college makes me feel less alone. I love the English language, and it helps me to learn it. I don’t want to be a quiet person in my community; I want to participate.”

Through his hard work, Alireza has achieved great results in his assessments, allowing him to move from ESOL Entry Level 1 to ESOL Entry Level 3 within just 6 months. In the future, Alireza wants to continue his career as a Pharmacy Technician, saying: “For that job, I need to take the English Language and Mathematics course. If I get these two qualifications, I will apply for a job or an apprenticeship next year.”
ESOL STUDENTS MUST BRING THE FOLLOWING TO ENROLMENT ▶ Non-UK nationals must bring home office documentation or evidence of settled/presettled status (eg biometric residence permit, and in some cases home office documentation). ▶ Asylum Seekers must have lived in the UK for 6 months or longer and show evidence (eg ARC Card, BAIL 201, or local authority evidence). ▶ ARC Card dated beyond six months and post office receipt of support, dated within the month (19+).

FINDING PURPOSE THROUGH PRIMARY SCHOOL PLACEMENT Lucy Gregory joined our Level 3 Teaching Assistant course after completing her Level 2 Early Years Practitioner Diploma last year. The 21-year-old mum of one is currently enjoying her teaching assistant placement in the Year 1 class at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School. “Everyone is so lovely at the school. I enjoy the placement and being able to do the practical side of the course. It’s one thing to write about it and another to actually experience it.”

Lucy also appreciates the atmosphere and support at college, including the small class size. “The group of people in my class are all nice. We have a group chat and help each other with work and hype each other up.” Lucy is looking forward to her career after completing the course, saying: “My career aspiration is to work as a teaching assistant and then, in the future, when my son is old enough, I want to become a full-time primary school teacher.”

ADVANCED LEARNER LOANS INVEST IN YOUR FUTURE If you are aged 19+ and want to study a vocational, technical or professional qualification at Level 3 and above you may be eligible to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan. The Advanced Learner Loan is available for you if you study an eligible course with us, including:
