Situated on St Anne’s Square behind St Anne’s Cathedral, the new £18m Metropolitan Arts Centre (the MAC) is a striking contemporary building which has helped transform Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter and create a world-class visitor destination. Such is the impact of the building’s design and finish, it recently received double recognition at the Brick Development Association’s 2012 Brick Awards – winning both the Best Public Building prize and the highly coveted Supreme Award. With its exposed red brick finish combined with glass and basalt cladding, the modern building reflects the strong warmth and character of the surrounding large-scale buildings of this grand Victorian merchant city. Boasting a wide range of arts facilities – including two theatres, three art galleries, three education and workshop rooms and an artist-in-residence studio – the MAC is a buzz with exhibitions, dramatic performances, dance shows and experimental works. Funded by the Department for Culture Arts and Leisure, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the Department for Social Development, the Laganside Corporation and Belfast City Council, the state-of-the-art facility has also been supported by contributions from charitable foundations and the local business sector.

The building’s designer was chosen through an international open design competition with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Responses were received from architects from all around the world but, following a rigorous selection procedure, Belfast-based Hackett Hall McKnight was appointed to lead an integrated design team to deliver the flagship building. Approximately 300,000 Mellowed Red Sovereign Stock 65mm facings were used in total, making the construction of the MAC one of the biggest brick construction projects in Belfast in recent years. The building’s finish is exceptional. Its dusty coloured brick walls with horizontal concrete stripes form a cool, lean elevation to the surrounding streets, paying homage to the industrial buildings of Belfast. The red brick, concrete and basalt MAC reminds visitors of the city’s rich history while heralding a new cultural future.

ArGeTon

Combining the natural beauty of genuine brick with cost effective fast-installation, Corium is a brick cladding system with a difference. The system utilises brick tiles, mechanically designed to fit to a HPS200 galvanised steel backing section. The profile sections can then be mounted in rows onto the backing structure and the brick tiles clipped in place.

Another of Wienerbergerâ€™s innovative solutions for modern building, ArGeTon is a cladding system designed for maximum economic and aesthetic value.

Like everything that Wienerberger produces, Corium is extremely durable and has been designed for both quality and ease of installation. Hillreed Homes Ltd, a leading property developer in the South East of England has specified Sandtoft’s Alban clay plain tile in Sussex Blend for a landmark home on its Oast Court Farm development in East Malling, Kent. The centrepiece of a private, gated development of eight bespoke properties, ‘The Offham’, a brand new Oast House has been built to create a superb, individual family home. The Oast House’s three roundels topped with conical white cowls look stunning using Sandtoft’s Alban clay plain tiles. Clive Pickard, design manager at Hillreed Residential Developments, said: “Oast Houses are a significant part of the history of this area of Kent and seen by many as a landmark of the region. The new Oast is built on the site of a former Oast and we wanted to make sure the new building truly reflected the architectural style of its predecessor. “As the three roundels of the Oast House are such a prominent part of the property, it was essential that we used the most appropriate tiles. The Alban tiles matched the colourings and reflected the heritage of the property perfectly and provided us with a durable, cost-effective solution.” Made from Wienerberger’s extensive clay reserves formed from the alluvial plain of the river Humber over 10,000 years ago, the Alban is a new handcrafted clay plain tile from Sandtoft who have been making traditional clay plain tiles for more than 100 years. The Alban is carefully sanded using recycled foundry sands that are pressed into the tile, creating a varied and rustic surface texture. Once dried the tiles are

set into the kiln by hand and fired vertically which further adds to their character as it results in each tile adopting a slightly different shape during firing. The Oast Court Farm development is a great example of the Alban’s flexibility. The heritage aesthetic of the tile is a perfect fit for the new development yet sits comfortably and reflects the vernacular style of traditional Oasts in the area. Sandtoft developed the Alban with traditional projects like this in mind. It’s ideal for people looking for a reclaimed tile at an affordable price. The Yard forms a central part of the master plan for the University of Roehampton. The project replaces an old trades yard and workshops at the heart of the campus, with a new public space that links Froebel and Digby Stuart Colleges, which were once separated by a boundary wall.

The scheme creates a single paver-lined space. Clay bricks and pavers were chosen to unify the old and the new, for surface, structure and skin, and to achieve a consistency through the range of different conditions and details, including conservation and repair. Furthermore, The Yard, capitalises on the eccentric building remains and ground conditions revealed by the demolition of the workshops. The design harnesses these eccentricities to reduce environmental waste. New structural openings have been made to open the chapel and an existing cafĂŠ up to The Yard. The historic boundary wall has been reduced in height and buttressed within The Yard to make it structurally sound. New flat brick arches have been introduced and openings formed to link The Yard to the historic Froebel garden and the Courts. To the north a new covered way has been carved out of an existing building. Clever detailing and design has allowed the paver to be used in the new brickwork and surrounding walls, taking the aesthetics

of the product into the vertical from the horizontal. The impression of solidity in the paver is honestly revealed in the free standing flemish-bond bench walls, whilst the onethird stretcher bond brick skins are used as building envelopes drawn over existing walls left exposed from the demolition works. The paving is laid in a variety of bonds including one-third stretcher, stack and herringbone. Niche benches built into the walls and copings are cast and etched reconstituted stone. Their pigment, similar to that of the lime-wash for the historic boundary wall, has been derived from grinding up samples of the new pavers from site.
