SIXTY YEARS OF COLOR

Inspired by the floors that came before. For sixty years, Carlisle has looked to history for

some of Carlisle’s earliest custom finishes and are

inspiration. Long before color trends and finish

collections, America’s most beautiful homes told their

found in historic American interiors. Reimagined

stories through floors shaped by time, craftsmanship,

for today, they remain among the most enduring

and daily life. These five colors trace their origins to

expressions of our craft.

Alluvium The Warmth of Pumpkin Pine

Among America’s oldest homes, few sights are more iconic than a centuries-old pumpkin pine floor glowing with rich amber tones. As pine ages, its heartwood develops a warmth and depth that only time can create. Pumpkin pine was among the materials that defined Carlisle’s earliest years. Alluvium was later developed to capture this treasured patina and its golden, sun-warmed character that made historic pine floors the heart of colonial American homes.

Picture Frame Inspired by Pickled Floors

Picture Frame traces its roots to the softly aged “pickled” floors found in historic homes throughout the Northeast. While these floors were rarely stained, years of cleaning with traditional lye soaps left behind a subtle white cast that softened the wood’s natural tone. Introduced as a custom site-finished color in the late 1990s, it reinterprets that understated elegance with a refined, luminous finish — both historic and remarkably modern.

Eden The Patina of Southern Heart Pine

Originally known as Provincial and later Coppermine, Eden was developed to recreate the rich, burnished character of reclaimed longleaf heart pine floors found throughout the American South. It draws on the naturally aged floors of historic homes and estates, where generations of use created a warm, patina that softened the grain while enhancing the wood’s natural beauty. Today, Eden remains one of Carlisle’s most timeless expressions of warmth and authenticity.

Sanctuary The Beauty of Timeworn Floors

More than thirty years ago, Carlisle introduced a finish known as Vermont Coffee Bean. Over time, that beloved color evolved into what is now Sanctuary. The inspiration came from centuries-old floors waxed, oiled, and lived upon for generations. As oils and daily wear accumulated over decades, they created a deeper, richer surface that enhanced the individuality of every plank — a finish that feels grounded, storied, and enduring.

Pine Cone A Tribute to Traditional Craft

Pine Cone evolved from one of Carlisle’s earliest handcrafted colors: Tobacco Leaf. Inspired by traditional staining methods, craftsmen once created rich brown tones by steeping tobacco leaves in mineral spirits — a deep, nuanced finish unlike anything available commercially. The resulting floors were often finished with wax or tung oil, creating a low-luster surface that emphasized depth, texture, and natural beauty. Pine Cone carries that tradition forward in a color both timeless and distinctly American.
