WELCOME LETTERS

On behalf of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Executive Board, it is my privilege to welcome you to this year’s WIAA State Championships, brought to you by Gesa Credit Union. These events represent the culmination of countless hours of dedication, teamwork, and perseverance by student participants, coaches, and school communities from all across the State of Washington.

The WIAA and its member schools are proud to provide opportunities for all students to excel in athletics, performing arts, and other activities—always grounded in the values of fair play, sportsmanship, and teamwork. These principles are at the heart of what makes interscholastic activities such a vital part of the educational experience.

As you enjoy today’s competition, we invite you to celebrate not only the excellence on display but also the character, respect, and camaraderie that define high school activities in our state.

Congratulations to all the participants, and thank you to the parents, coaches, officials, and fans whose support helps make these opportunities possible.

Best wishes for a memorable and spirited championship experience.

Welcome to the WIAA State Championships, presented by Gesa Credit Union. The WIAA Executive Board, The WIAA Executive Board, staff, and member schools share a unified goal of providing interscholastic activities that enrich students’ lives and create lasting memories. WIAA State Championships represent the culmination of dedication, perseverance, and teamwork demonstrated throughout the season by student-participants and their supporters.

At the WIAA, we believe education-based athletics and activities provide the safest, most equitable, and most meaningful environment for students to learn and grow. While it is a privilege for our staff to organize and host these culminating events, they are made possible through the invaluable efforts of coaches, athletic directors, officials, and the many volunteers who contribute to the success of each championship. This event celebrates the students who have earned the opportunity to compete at the highest level of high school sports and activities in Washington. Their hard work, discipline, and commitment have brought them to this stage. We also extend appreciation to the parents, families, and loved ones whose support has been instrumental throughout their journey.

Sportsmanship and citizenship remain cornerstones of every WIAA State Championship. We encourage all spectators to demonstrate positive support for every participant, helping to ensure an environment that is safe, respectful, and enjoyable for all students, coaches, officials, families, and fans alike.

The Washington Officials Association (WOA) extends its congratulations to all student-participants competing in this year’s WIAA State Championships, presented by Gesa Credit Union. Reaching this stage requires tremendous dedication, discipline, and perseverance. The WOA applauds each participant for the commitment that has led to this achievement and encourages you to enjoy the memories and moments that make this experience so meaningful.

While these State Championships represent the pinnacle of the season for many officials, the WOA also recognizes the thousands of officials who dedicate their time and expertise throughout the year, working countless contests across every region of Washington. These individuals play an essential role in the success of education-based athletics, contributing to fair play, safety, and sportsmanship at every level of competition.

Officials choose to serve because of their passion for the games and activities they love, and to give back to programs that have positively shaped their lives. The WOA is deeply appreciative of their ongoing commitment to supporting student-participants and interscholastic activities statewide. Those interested in becoming an official are encouraged to contact the Washington Officials Association. More information is available at www.washingtonofficials.com.

The WOA looks forward to an outstanding State Championship experience.

TEAM COMPETITION:

Each year teams qualify to compete for one of two Team State Championships. There are six (6) teams competing for the State Championship at 4A and eight (8) teams competing for the State Championship at 1A/2A/3A. A team consists of six competitors per event, including any all-around competitors, with five scores counting, and a maximum of sixteen competitors per team. Team scores are determined by adding the top five scores from the six competitors of each team per event (bars, beam, floor, vault).

ALL-AROUND COMPETITION:

The all-around competition consist of members of qualifying teams and gymnasts who qualified as individual competitors. These individuals will compete in all four events (bars, beam, floor, vault) throughout the course of day one. Since all-around competitors can belong to a qualified team or qualify on their own, the all-around competition will be contested during both the team and individual sessions of the first day. All-around totals will be determined by adding the average scores of the four events (bars, beam, floor, vault).

INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION:

In addition to the qualifying teams, individual gymnasts can qualify for the State Championships in one event, multiple events, or as an all-around competitor. Individual competitors will compete during the individual rotation schedule. Gymnasts that compete in the team competition are also competing as individual competitors and will be eligible for awards in the individual competition.

2026 HALL-OF-FAME INDUCTEES

SUSAN OKAZAKI JUDGE

Susan was introduced to judging by her older sister Stace, who said they needed junior high gymnastics judges. And so, at 16, her judging career began. Susan soon started judging high school and club gymnastics (until 1998), eventually becoming a Level 9 judge.

Her assigning tenure began in the early 1990’s, taking the reins from Marge Eilers, who was a great mentor. Assigning has evolved from calling people on the telephone to using an online platform for assigning. It’s so much easier!

Judging gymnastics has been a huge part of her life – she loves seeing how everyone improves - judges and gymnasts alike during the season and from year to year. We’re all here because we love gymnastics and want to see this sport continue and succeed.

In 2006, Susan was WOA Official of the Year and in 2008, she was the WOA Meritorious Award recipient. She has judged the WIAA State Gymnastics meet since 2012 and off and on prior to that starting in 1994. She has also volunteered her time to be a judge at the Sr. National meet representing team Washington.

“Thank you to the WSGCA for inviting me to be a member of this stellar group of Washington gymnastics icons. I’m honored to join the club.”

- Susan Okazaki

LAURIE CHADWICK COACH/JUDGE, MEAD

“Simply put - I love the sport of gymnastics. My journey with competitive gymnastics started when I was a freshman in high school at W.F. West High School (‘80) and continued on during college at Eastern Washington University (‘84). I was very excited to become a teacher AND coach at the high school level. As I embarked on my coaching journey, I was lucky to be supported and mentored by Kathy and Rick Harrison. Additionally, I was in awe of Nola Ayers and her legendary Sehome program. I have always loved competition, and I put my all into building up young women as part of coaching gymnastics and embracing the competition arena. What a fun quest! All the accolades remind me of the teamwork between the gymnasts and coach that involved hard work, determination, fun, and laughter.

After 38 seasons of high school gymnastics coaching (28 head, 10 assistant), I have contributed to 22 Greater Spokane League championships, 20 team appearances at state (15 for a trophy), and 68 State medals. I have been honored with GSL Coach of the Year 5 times, Washington State Coach of the Year 4 times, and Sectional and National Coach of the Year one time. 2012 was an epic memory year when my Mead team went undefeated, scored a league high of 180.9, and won the 4A State Championship. As a result both the Mead State Championship team and coach (me) were awarded the Spokane Sports Writers and Broadcasters Youth Female Team and Coach of the Year. Another favorite memory year was 2002 when my Lakeside team placed second at 2A/3A state, including Katie Dinsmore winning the all-around championship and placing first on all four events. 2002 was also the year I had three gymnasts on the Washington State National High School team and attended the meet as an assistant coach. Our Washington team won the National title! Besides coaching high school, I have served numerous years on the WSCGA board, judged gymnastics since college, judged many high school state meets, and now serve as the technical director for high school judging. I was 2005 Judge of the Year from the Washington Officials Association. Fostering gymnasts to develop in the gym to perform on meet day is a reward within itself, but inspiring gymnasts to be their best in life is infinitely priceless. It is gratifying to see many of my past gymnasts now coaching and judging. Involvement in high school gymnastics and all of its changes throughout the years (rules, equipment, format, skills, leotards, etc.) has been a challenging and heartfelt journey, but without a doubt the best part has been the relationships forged through the shared sport of gymnastics. Little did I know when I was fourteen years old and playing in chalk dust for the first time, it would be the genesis of a career immersed in high school gymnastics. I am so thankful.”

IN MEMORIAM

DEAN RATLIFF

JUDGE

This year’s State Gymnastics Meet will be different. We will be missing Judge Dean Ratliff who had been a part of this meet as either a coach, judge or Meet Referee since 1990. Dean passed away unexpectedly in June 2025. He will be greatly missed by the high school gymnastics community and those who have been a part of the State meet over the years.

Dean started coaching right out of high school for USAG clubs and high school for Ingraham and Ballard’s combined program. After coaching for a few years, judging fit better into his family’s schedule. In 1990, he judged his first high school State meet, and he has been at every State meet as a judge, coach, or meet referee/technical director since then…that’s 35 years being a part of the high school gymnastics State meet. Dean judged club gymnastics as well as NCAA for most, if not all, of his career.

He started on the WSGCA board in 1993 and became the Technical Director/State Meet Referee in 1994 and held that position until his passing. In that position he worked closely with WIAA and WOA. He was also the USAG State Judging director and assignor for a few years.

Dean has been recognized for his many contributions in several ways over the years. Dean was Official of the Year 1999, NFHS Official of the Year 2000, was inducted into the WSGCA Hall of Fame in 2017 and was inducted into the WOA Hall of Fame in 2025. He was also the WIAA Gareth Giles Award recipient in 2024.

Along with high school gymnastics in this state Dean was also active nationally. In 2007, he was a founding member of NHSGA and was their technical director until his passing. He has also judged and was meet director or technical director at every High School Senior National meet since 1999.

Outside of gymnastics Dean loved to travel. When he was inducted into the WSGCA Hall of Fame, he wrote, “Since those days of cassette tapes, vaulting horse and competing on wrestling mats at State, my passion for high school gymnastics has not changed. I continue to feel greatly honored to be able to work with so many others that share my passion for high school gymnastics and providing an outlet for these young ladies in our amazing sport…Know that all I do is in support of this program, our coaches and judges and most of all our athletes.” I think that sums up Dean. There will be a huge hole in our community without him. He will be missed by so many.

Dean is survived by his wife Mari, children Elizabeth, Amalie and Andrew. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they grieve in this difficult time.
