WHAT’S POPPIN’ WHITNEY KEY CLUB!
My name is Ann Huang and I am beyond proud and honored to serve as Whitney Key Club’s President for the 2024-2025 term!
HI SUNNIES! Welcome back to a new school year, and thanks to everyone who signed up at Club Rush! If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s not too late! I am super pumped for all the amazing events we have planned this coming year, and I hope all of you guys are too! Please be on the lookout for upcoming service activities from our DOAs, and start getting those hours in through our in-person and online events. Also, please make sure to support us at our fundraisers and socials. We will be holding our FIRST general meeting of the year this month, so make sure to come out!
To those who joined Key Club for the first time, I genuinely have met so many new friends and made so many great memories throughout my years in Key Club. Key Club provides many service and leadership opportunities across all levels and gives back to its members through scholarships and recognition! Beyond this, Key Club also has super fun social activities, like our upcoming social, Fall Rally South, spirit nights, and DCMs, so make sure to come out to those! If you have questions at all, please feel free to reach out to me!

What’supKeyClubbers!Iknowitmight’vefeltlikeawhile,butour summeriscomingtoanend.Andwiththeendingofthesummer comesthefreshstartofthenewschoolyear.Withthisnewschoolyear, weallhopetoovercomeandlearnfromourpreviousexperiencesin thefollowingyearsinordertomakethisoneevengreater.Ihopeto sharewithyousomeofmytipsthatIhavelearnedovertheyears,to starttheschoolyearoffright!
Iknowthesummermayhavegonebyfast,buttheschoolyeariscomingup meaningthatwenolongerhavethetimetobewakingupatnooneveryday.For thelastcoupledaysofthesummerIliketryingtosetmysleepschedulebackto theappropriatetimingforschooltoletmybodyfeelmoreateasewhenschool startsbackup.Withthat,Iliketosetmymorningroutinefortheschoolyeara weekbeforesoIcanalreadyhavethosegoodhabitsinthemorningtomakeit justthatmucheasierwhenwakingupinthemorningandgoingtoschool.
Thesecondthingispreppingformyclasses.Thefirstthingthatcomeswith thisischeckingmyemail.Openingupthatdustylaptopthathasn’tbeen touchedthiswholesummerandcheckinguponanyimportantemails. Afterwards,Igooverallmyclassesandtrytolookuptheunitsandcourses intheclasstogivemyselfanunderstandingofwhatIwillbelearningandif theclassisanAP,lookingoverthemodulesinAPClassroom.
Lastly,makesuretokeepaneyeoutforclubs.Withclubrushcomingin afterthestartoftheschoolyear,IliketoalreadybeawareoftheclubsI’m interestedinorlookingatanyupcomingeventstostayactiveandsetting somegoalsyouwanttoachievewithintheclub.

KeyCluboffersonlinehoursasanalternativemethod todoserviceandhavestillhaveaprofoundimpacton thecommunity.Forexample,whenyougooutsidefor anicerunorwalk,bydownloadingthecharitymiles app,youcangetupto3hoursinservicepermonthin aneventcalled“Exerciseyourinfluence”.Ontopofthat, ifyouarejustsittingonyourlaptopyoucanearnhours byansweringmathproblems,triviaquestionsand moreinalargeselectionofeventssuchas“Free Wheat”.Ifyouenjoywriting,“PediatricProject”isa greatwaytodoserviceandwrite4meaningfulletters perhourtosufferingchildren.
Finally,evenifyouaredoinganotherataskorjustsitting idle,thereisnoexcusenottovolunteerin“TappyTree” whichisanidleclickerserviceprojectthatplantstreespe click.Overall,onlinehoursisagreatwaytocontinuedoing serviceandgetprettyeasyhours.Therefore,thereisno reasonnottobeabletoincreaseyourinvolvementinkey club,sogosign-upnow!

1.GetInvolved-Attendyourfirstgeneralmeetingwitha willingnesstoparticipate.Signupforserviceprojects, fundraisers,andsocialevents.ThemoreyouputintoKeyClub, themoreyou’llgetoutofit.Remember,it’snotaboutbeing perfect,it'saboutshowingupandmakinganeffort.
2.ConnectwithOtherMembers-Oneofthemostrewardin aspectsofKeyClubistheopportunitytomeetpeerswhosha similarpassionforservice.Takethetimetogettoknowyo fellowKeyclubbers.Attendsocialevents,engagein conversationsduringmeetings,anddon’tbeafraidtointrod yourselftoothers.Buildingstrongconnectionswillmakeyour Clubexperiencemoreenjoyableandcollaborative.
3.EmbraceLeadershipOpportunities-KeyClubisallabout developingleadershipskills.Whetheryou’releadingaproject, servingonacommittee,orevenrunningforacabinetposition, don’tshyawayfromleadershiproles.Theseopportunitieswillnot onlyhelpyougrowasaleaderbutalsoallowyoutocontribute moremeaningfullytoyourclubandcommunity.

FallRallySouth.SpiritNights.DCMs.Kiwanisgiving.These arejustafewoftheeventsthatwouldnotevenbe possibleifitwerenotforawonderfulgroupofindividuals calledtheKiwanis.Theyaresomeofthemosthelpful peopleintheworld,throughpersonalexperiencewith ourownKiwanisgroup,theLaPalmaKiwanis,andthey helpfundandassistinmostmajorKeyClubevents, beingtheintegralpillartosuccess.Butwhoexactlyare theKiwanis?
ThefirstKiwanisclubcameupinDetroit,Michigan,and wasoriginallycalledtheSupremeLodgeBenevolent OrderofBrothers(soundsabitlikeapretentious fraternityifyouaskme).However,thenamewas changedtoKiwanistohonortheAlgonquianphrasefor “webuild.”SincethatfirstclubinDetroit,multipleother organizationssproutednationallyandinternationally, withastrongpresenceinmorethaneightynations worldwide.

TheKiwanisweren’tevenfocusedonserviceinthefirst place;theystartedoffasabusinessnetworking organizationbutlatershiftedtoservice(specifically servicetochildren).Thisimportantshifthasledmany Kiwanisorganizationstosupportandpartnerwithother service-orientedlikeKeyClubInternational(whoare gratefulfortheirhelpandguidance)andtheBoyScouts andGirlScouts.Inadditiontofacilitatingserviceevents andfundraisersoftheirown,theyalsoplayarolein marketingandchaperoningforourclub’sserviceand divisioneventsandrestaurantfundraiserssothatwe mayenjoyevenmoresuccess.
Overall,theKiwanisplayanintegralroleintheKeyClub experience,andyoucanshowyourlovetothemby participatinginmanyeventsfocusedonthem,suchas Kiwanisgiving.Youcanalsokeepalookoutforservice eventsrelatedtotheKiwanisinthemonthlyemailsfrom ourDirectorsofActivities;restassured,youwillhave loadsoffunattheseevents.WithouttheKiwanis,Key ClubInternationalprobablywouldnotbeassuccessful andfar-reachingasitistoday.

AsWhitneystudents,alotofusarefocusedonbeinghighperformingstudents,notjustintheacademicfield,butalso theextracurricularfield.KeyClubisawonderfulwaytoadd somethingtoyourextracurricularlistandeventoyour eventualgraduation,howeverlonginthefuturethatmaybe.
Asseeninoursecretary’smonthlyemailonthetotalhours servedinagivenmonth,KeyCluboffersscholarships, cords,stoles,andmedallionstoawardyouforyour involvementintheclub.Foracordatyoursenioryear graduation,youwillneedtohavereached100totalservice hours,withattendanceto1DCMand2generalmeetings. Forageneralmember,thisshouldn’tbetoohardtomeet, especiallyifyou’redoingonlineeventsandjoiningthe occasionalgeneralmeeting.
Foramedallion,150hoursareneededbyyoursenioryear, aswellasattendanceto2DCMsand4generalmeetings.
Higherinvolvementisneededforthistier,asforthelast award:thestole.Thestolerequireshighinvolvementfrom members,suchas200hourstotal,with50hoursservedin2 terms,4DCMs,and8generalmeetings,requiringhigh involvementintheclub.
