SUKI WAPSHOTT
FEATURED ARTIST
27th April to 29th May 2024
Polzeath based artist Suki Wapshott is known for her paintings of Cornwall’s wild Atlantic coast. This new collection is inspired by the solitude and solace that can be found in nature, of peaceful time spent walking the beaches and cliff paths around Polzeath and the Camel Estuary in the morning and at sunset, with only the sea mist for company.
Working with a palette knife and brush, Suki creates richly textured imagery and powerful compositions, with low set or dramatically high horizons that convey the awe-inspiring grandeur of the space where land meets sea, lit by the hazy Cornish sunshine which radiates through layers of rain and cloud. Looking out across sands at low tide and taking in spectacular views of Pentire and Stepper Point, these paintings capture the blue tinted light of Cornwall’s ever shifting skies, reflected on wet beaches and rolling ocean waters.

Suki Wapshott has lived and worked on the North Cornwall coast for more than two decades. Whilst landscape inspires her work, Suki’s focus as a painter has always been on emotive expression, achieved through freedom of process, gestural mark making, and her instinctive use of colour and structure. Her paintings are inspired by her love of literature and daily walks along the Padstow, Polzeath and Port Isaac coastline with her much loved dogs, as well as the view from her studio which sits high above the beach in Polzeath. Suki’s work is held in private collections in the UK and worldwide.
