In the Western White Mountains, the natural splendor of New Hampshire is on full display. Mixed coniferous and deciduous forests, lush with color in the fall, beckon visitors from around the world, while a variety of man-made attractions, outdoor adventures, scenic drives, and train rides pay homage to the region’s rich history of tourism.
Prior to serving as the gateway to adventure, the western White Mountains was a hub for the logging industry. At its height in the 1800’s and early 1900’s, as many as 19 logging railroads were in operation throughout the region. With the advent of the Weeks Act in 1911 and the subsequent creation of White Mountain National Forest in 1918, a recreation paradise was born.
Today, visitors can enjoy the grandeur of the White Mountains in many ways. For a stunning drive, head east across the Kancamagus Highway, a 34.5-mile scenic stretch that connects Lincoln to Conway. Did you know the “Kanc” is the Northeast’s first National Scenic Byway?
If you feel like heading west, drive up over Kinsman Notch. This is the westernmost of the major notches in NH, and features everything from Beaver Cascades and Beaver Pond to the endlessly explorable Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves

The mountain towns of Lincoln and Woodstock are located at the start of the 34.5-mile Kancamagus Highway, just off Interstate 93. Sugar Hill
Known as the “newest” town in New Hampshire, Sugar Hill was incorporated in 1962. Its namesake sugar maples, as well as its unparalleled views of the Franconia Range, have drawn notable past residents like actress Bette Davis and novelist Earnest Poole.
Sugar Hill is a quintessential New England village hailed for its spectacular pink and purple lupine flowers that bloom every June.

Franconia sits on a rich iron deposit, and the region once produced pig iron and bar iron for farm tools and cast-iron ware. It is home to Cannon Mountain and was once home to Franconia College during the 1960s and 1970s. Franconia is the place to embrace the joie de vivre of the great outdoors. While you’re in town, stop by the Besaw Iron Furnace, an octagonal stone stack visible on the far side of the Gale River. BEECHER’S PULPIT n Carroll, NH
This relatively new marker, dedicated in July 2022, commemorates the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, a Congregationalist clergyman, abolitionist, and proponent of women’s suffrage. While visiting the White Mountains to ease his allergy symptoms, Beecher would stand on a glacial boulder near this spot and preach to crowds of nearly 1,000 people. Located on School Street, in the parking lot of the Twin Mountain Chamber of Commerce.
BRETTON WOODS MONETARY CONFERENCE n Bretton Woods, NH
In 1944, delegates from 44 countries met at the Mount Washington Hotel to establish regulations for the international monetary system. The meeting resulted in the creation of the International Monetary Fund and the founding of the World Bank. It set the exchange rate of currencies around the world to the value of gold. Lancaster started as an 18th-century mill town and today is a rural village with a boutique main street, 4-season outdoor recreation, and a 420-acre state park.
Head to the top of the stone fire tower on Mount Prospect in Weeks State Park for a 360-degree view of the Northern White Mountains. The John Wingate Weeks House Museum is open to the public and there are many trails to explore the 446-acre property.
If you’re after a guaranteed animal sighting, visit Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge. The ponds, wetlands and forests of this refuge support a wide variety of flora and fauna (including many species of birds). Hike or bring your bike—a section of the Presidential Rail Trail (which is also part of the Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail) meanders right through the very best views at Pondicherry.

The Mount Washington Valley, or simply “The Valley” as it is locally known, is a four-season outdoor recreationist’s playground. While the vast mountain landscape drew artists and city-dwellers here in the 1800’s, it continues to attract visitors from all over the world for skiing, shopping, rock climbing, hiking, and photo-taking.
Along with incredible mountain backdrops, the Valley is home to pristine lakes for paddling and winding rivers for tubing and wildlife watching.
Other local highlights include Whitaker Woods (a peaceful 4-season trail system owned by the town of Conway), Echo Lake State Park (a perfect spot for swimming and admiring the rocky views of Cathedral Ledge), and plenty of places for dining and tax-free shopping.

Along the eastern edge of New Hampshire, placed cozily between the Lakes Region and the White Mountains, is the historic town of Tamworth. This enclave, founded in 1766, encompasses the villages of Chocorua, Tamworth, South Tamworth, Whittier, and Wonalancet. Won’t you join us for a ride? The Tamworth area is laced with rich history along every mile of its winding roads. Take your time traveling past stone walls, old churches, and pretty farmland, and stop at the Tamworth Village green to admire the life-sized bronze statue of famous sled dog Chinook, the sire and namesake of New Hampshire’s state dog breed.
It’s little wonder why so many are still drawn to this part of the White Mountains. All one needs to do is take a look at the commanding view of Lake Chocorua and Mount Chocorua, right off Route 16. This is one of the most photographed spots in America! Pull over, grab your camera, and take a photo at the wooden bridge.

Quirky White Mountains History
n Tourism to the White Mountains can trace its beginnings to the Willey House tragedy of 1826. The Willey Family succumbed to a freak landslide and when word of this macabre incident reached cities such as Boston, widespread fascination led people to the region in droves. They have been traveling here ever since!
n The forests of the White Mountains hold many secrets, including the remnants of old logging towns. In the late 1800’s, logging communities flourished, but as timber ran out and the Weeks Act was established, these towns were abandoned and are now considered ghost towns, lost to history. Notable towns include Livermore and Thornton Gore.
n With the railroad expansion in the 1850’s, Grand Hotels began to emerge in the White Mountains. These hotels featured elite accommodations, extensive and luxurious amenities, and grand architecture. At their peak, there were around 30 grand hotels in the region; now, there are 4 that remain open, including the Omni Mount Washington Resort & Spa and the Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa.
n In the early days of the Mount Washington Cog Railway, track workers would descend the mountain on a slideboard called a Devil’s Shingle. These narrow planks of wood rode on the center rack track and the average trip from summit to base was 15 minutes. The record time down was 2 minutes 45 seconds at speeds up to 60 mph.
n Opened in 1861, the Mt. Washington Auto Road is the 1st man-made attraction in the United States. Freelan O. Steamer of Stanley Steamers made the first motorized ascent of the Auto Road in 1899; by 1912, the Auto Road had switched from horse-drawn carriages to motorized vehicles.
n The Wallace Horse Cemetery in Littleton on Mt. Eustis Road is where three of Eli Wallace’s horses were buried: Maud, Molly, and Maggie. The first two horses were interred in 1919 and the last in 1929. The plaque reads that they were buried with “all their trappings–harnesses, bridles, blankets, and feed boxes.”
n Franconia, and specifically Cannon Mountain, developed the Nation’s first professional ski patrol in 1939. 10 years prior, the town of Sugar Hill welcomed the first ski school in North America.
n In 1961, the Betty and Barney Hill alien abduction took place near Lincoln, New Hampshire. Today, the area is considered a historical and mysterious landmark.

Sabbaday Falls
Up next, a Kanc classic: Sabbaday Falls. This gently graded 0.7-mile out-and-back trail ends at a 35’ multi-plunge waterfall with lower and upper viewing points. On hot summer days, the cool breezes and mist wafting toward the trail offer extra incentive to enjoy the overlooks.

At this popular swimming and sunbathing spot, the Swift River cascades over granite rocks into a large pool. Lower Falls features an 80-car parking lot, restrooms, and picnic tables with grills. Keep in mind that alcohol is prohibited, and that the rocks can be dangerously slick. colleeninthe603

Discovery Trail

Pemigewasset Overlook
The Pemigewasset Overlook is one of five overlooks found along the Kanc. We recommend stopping at each one, but this spot offers a particularly pretty view at all hours if you’re pressed for time.
Boulder Loop
On this 3.5-mile loop, hikers can marvel at a multitude of large and interesting boulders before reaching the summit, where several scenic ledges await. To access the Boulder Loop trail, park in the lot off Passaconaway Road (right near the Albany Covered Bridge).

Tell us about the wildlife viewing opportunities at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center (SLNSC), including what visitors can expect on the boat tours.
The woods and meadows at the Science Center are alive with songbirds in the spring and summer. Tree Swallows, House Wrens and Eastern Bluebirds quarrel over nesting boxes placed along the trails. On the lake, Loons are always a highlight.
What are some exciting animal/bird species that visitors might spot in the White Mountains region?
The White Mountain area is a haven for woodland songbirds. Use the Merlin Bird ID app on your phone and you will be amazed at how many species are around you. As you climb higher in the mountains, specialized boreal forest species will take over such as Boreal Chickadee, Black-backed Woodpecker, Swainson’s Thrush and the rare Bicknell’s Thrush.
Do you have any helpful birdwatching or wildlife spotting tips for beginners?
A walk out to the Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge in Whitefield/Jefferson is always rewarding. The viewing platform overlooking Cherry Pond is always a great spot to view wildlife.

Hike Safe with NH Fish & Game
New Hampshire’s White Mountains region is renowned for its abundant trail networks and stunning natural beauty. We took a walk with Jonathan Demler, a Conservation Officer with the New Hampshire Fish & Game Law Enforcement Division, to learn more about what it takes to Hike Safe—and have fun—in the White Mountains.
Hi, I’m Jon Demler, and I’m a Conservation Officer with the New Hampshire Fish & Game Department’s Law Enforcement Division. I think the White Mountains are very special for outdoor adventures. For a lot of people, they grew up nearby. There’s a lot within the Northeast that is easy access to the White Mountains, and people are coming up to be able to experience nature, to see some big areas of wilderness. Even for myself, there’s always kind of a sense of awe driving through Franconia Notch, and I go through there an awful lot–almost daily.
Describe some challenges for hikers in the White Mountains. Some of the most common problems that hikers encounter when they are out in the White Mountains is a lack of experience, and also exposure to the elements. Some people have an idea that a hike is maybe four miles long, and they translate that to four miles of hiking through a park or some flat marked trails, but in the White Mountains, many of the trails are actually very difficult; to gain elevation—to start at the bottom of a mountain and then climb to the top of it—is a lot more strenuous than many other activities.
Tell us something surprising about hiking in our region. Did you know that winter conditions can persist throughout the year in the White Mountains? Temperatures at the base of the mountain can be very pleasant, but it could be winter conditions—even snow—in June, July, and August on some of New Hampshire’s mountains.
What should hikers bring in their backpack?
Hikers should be familiar with and carry the 10 Hike Safe Essentials. If you go to HikeSafe.com, they will list items that you should be carrying with you no matter what time of year it is. In particular, though, make sure you have an external light source like a headlamp or a flashlight separate from your phone, and also be prepared with the knowledge of where you are going, and how to use a map and a compass.
Do you have any favorite hikes in the White Mountains?
Some of my favorite hikes in the White Mountains include Welch and Dickey mountains. It's almost in my backyard, and it's a fun, scenic hike that is still pretty challenging.

Middle Sister tends to be quieter than Mount Chocorua but offers just as stunning views, making it a great alternative. If you want to extend your adventure, you can also add Mount Chocorua to the hike with Middle Sister!

This is a fantastic half-day hike to experience the famous Tuckerman Ravine Trail without the strenuous effort of ascending Mt. Washington. Along this gradual but steady incline, you'll be treated to views of mountain ridges and the Crystal Cascade waterfall. A beautiful view of the Tuckerman Ravine headwall awaits at Hermit Lake Shelters.
Ethan Pond 5 miles round trip n MODERATE
After a short but steep start, the Ethan Pond Trail becomes a gradual incline up to a serene mountain pond. Situated along the Appalachian Trail, you may encounter Thru-Hikers in the summer. Visit in the fall to experience autumn’s colors – the shoreline will be dotted with golden Tamarack trees.
Mount Madison When you get past the tree line on this mountain, you suddenly feel like you may be on another planet altogether. The breathtaking view, the strange and uncommon terrain, and the energy of that area was unlike anything I’ve experienced in New Hampshire and beyond.
Franconia Ridge The stretch between Mount Lincoln and Mount Lafayette was stunning, and walking the ridgeline (thankfully for me, on a beautiful warm day!) was a highlight of my entire trip. I would have enjoyed stopping to spend more quality time if I wasn’t on such a mission.
Mount Bond to Bondcliff This was my finish line hike and led me to my final peak, Bondcliff, for a beautiful moment of celebration with Andrew Drummond, owner of White Mountain Ski Company and record holder for the fastest known time summiting NH’s 48 4,000-footers in a single hike, unsupported.

Tips from the trail
n Pack for cold weather, no matter how nice things feel at the base of the mountain. n Wear shoes that are suitable for trails and terrain. Trail runners worked best for me. n Make sure you have a headlamp, another headlamp, and plenty of spare batteries. n Don’t look up and walk at the same time. I rolled my ankle like 300 times, and it was always when I wasn’t focusing on my feet. Terrain is ever-changing. n Take a deep breath, let gratitude fill your body, and just put one foot in front of the other.

MOUNT WASHINGTON
The peak of Mount Washington was first observed by European explorers from the Atlantic Ocean in 1524.
Known to Native Americans as Agiocochook , the summit was believed to be the home of the Great Spirit.
Nowadays, by foot, car, or train, the 6,288' summit of Mount Washington is surprisingly accessible. Home to Mount Washington State Park, it is visited by more than 250,000 people each year from all over the world who come to revel in the top-of-the-world views of New England, New York, and Canada. On a clear day, even the Atlantic Ocean is visible!
The first footpath to the summit was carved out by Ethan Allen Crawford in 1819. Today, the Crawford Path is the oldest continuously maintained footpath in the country, and a
portion of the Appalachian Trail follows the same route across Mount Washington. Visitors can summit the mountain two different ways: by boarding the Mount Washington Cog Railway, the world’s first mountain climbing cog railroad (departing from the western side of the mountain), or driving up the Mt. Washington Auto Road via personal vehicle or a guided stage coach tour (starting from the eastern side of the mountain).
Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeast and its weather is variable year-round. The record high temperature is 72°F; the record low is -47°F – without factoring in the wind chill!
With an average July temperature of 54°F, summer visitors can get a respite from warmer temperatures in the valleys below. When you come, plan to bring a jacket and sturdy shoes. And don’t forget your camera!

In April 1934, the observatory recorded a 231-mile-per-hour wind that remains a world record for a land-based weather station. The average temperature on the summit is 27.5 degrees Fahrenheit (-3C)

The White Mountain NATIONAL FOREST RECREATION PASS
The White Mountain National Forest is one of the most heavily used National Forests in the country. With that use comes a large workload to maintain the recreation facilities. As a result, a program is in place to collect fees for recreational use.
All unattended vehicles parked on National Forest land must display a Recreation Pass where signed. Pass options include a $5 day pass available onsite, and a $30 single or $40 household annual pass for those who use the Forest year-round. Recreation Passes are available at area businesses, USFS Information Centers, and the White Mountains Visitor Center. For those holding the America the Beautiful Pass, Access Pass, and Senior Pass, parking is free.

A QUICK LEAF PEEPER’S GUIDE
The changing colors of autumn trees are getting ready for winter. Throughout spring and summer, most of the food necessary for a tree’s growth is made in the leaves. This food-making process takes place in the cells containing chlorophyll, which gives leaves their green color. In fall, partly due to shorter periods of daylight and cooler temperatures, the leaves stop making food. The chlorophyll breaks down and the green color disappears; yellow and orange—previously masked by the green—appear.
The vibrant reds, purples, and bronzes come from other chemical processes. The brilliant red of Maples has a sweet side: in the warmth of fall days, sugar is produced in the leaves and then trapped by the night’s chill. The more sugar that accumulates, the brighter red the leaves turn.
The degree of color varies from tree to tree. Leaves directly exposed to the sun may turn red, while those on the shady side of the same tree may be yellow. Color also varies depending on weather conditions. When autumn is warm and rainy, leaves may have less red coloration.
As colors vary from mountaintops to valleys and from day to day, there’s no way to predict when fall foliage will be at its peak. This is a time of change, when each day is colored anew. Only two places in the world have this brilliant foliage—New England and part of Japan—but there’s no better place on earth to see nature’s most colorful display than the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Visit Mid-Week If your schedule allows, plan a visit mid-week; you may find that you have an overlook, trail, or roadway mostly to yourself.
Take the Roads Less Traveled To avoid the congestion that sometimes happens along busier routes, consider one of our “roads less traveled” for a more enjoyable autumn foliage experience. Head down a side road such as Rte. 112 West through Kinsman Notch, Rte. 118 in Warren, Rte. 113 in Sandwich, or Rte. 2 in Randolph and Jefferson. All are stunning at this time of year—and have less traffic!
Pack Your Patience Take a deep breath and enjoy our fresh mountain air and the scent of crisp fall leaves. Enjoy the fact that you’re in the White Mountains and soak in the beauty around you. Staffing shortages exist, and some businesses may have modified operating hours. Pack your patience along with your toothbrush and camera!
Be Safe and Respectful When visiting the White Mountains, please be mindful of your surroundings. Stay on the trail and leave only footprints when taking a hike. If you carry something into a park or attraction, be sure to carry it out. Familiarize yourself with the rules when it comes to camping and ask questions if you don’t know the answers. Be careful around water and on steep ledges—no Instagram post is worth hurting the environment or yourself. Respect the beauty of nature that surrounds you, as well as the staff at your favorite restaurants, breweries, hotels, and attractions.

Spring in the White Mountains – what is it like? We have our fair share of blooming flowers and sunny strolls, but our neck of the woods also has another name for this time of year: mud season. Expect snow, mud, and all types of weather if you visit mid-March to mid-June, plus far fewer crowds and plenty of fun to be found!

To make the most of your trip, pack sensibly and plan ahead. Bring plenty of layers and sturdy waterproof shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty, and call around before you hop in the car to make sure your preferred restaurants, shops, and activities will be open during your visit (as many small businesses use this quiet time of year to prep for the White Mountains’ busiest season).
Planning a hike? Keep in mind that winter at higher elevations can last all the way from September through May. Pack accordingly, and only hike when it is safe and smart to do so. Page 107.
