If you are planning a society day or a group outing, then the following pages are designed to give you an in depth profile of some of the best society venue in England.

Whilst reading through this annual edition you will find a diverse range of golf courses from hidden gems to some of the countries larger venues, all of which offer some of the best and most affordable society golf in England. CANTERBURY GOLF CLUB

Oxford Golf Club

Alresford Golf Club

A gem of a course in a gem of a town…

The golf courses in Hampshire are truly outstanding with a great variety of different layouts to choose from. The region offers an abundance of golf courses, resorts and stay and play locations to entertain all tastes and budgets.

Hampshire’s coastal location offers some truly exceptional links golf opportunities as well as inland parkland and rare downland. Each courses’ Individual character, coupled with the fantastic weather that the county benefits from during the summer months, make it an ideal location for a golf break.

The handsome Georgian town of Alresford which is located in the City of Winchester district of Hampshire Voted Country Life’s Favourite Market Town in the south east, Alresford is also known for its specialist shops, old-fashioned inns, smart bistros and traditional tea rooms.

Founded in 1890, Alresford Golf Club has developed into one of the most attractive and challenging courses in the south of England. The course was extended to its current layout in 1993.

Offering views of the South Downs National Park and the surrounding Hampshire countryside it is one of only 30 downland courses in England, the course is playable all-year-round due to its chalk characteristics and this coupled with its reputation for overall course presentation is why it has regularly been chosen to host County amateur and PGA competitions.

The picturesque and easy-walking setting on the slopes of Tichborne Down feature no less than five tricky par 3s and carefully contoured fairways which are a challenge to even the most accomplished of golfer. The 11th and 12th holes are considered to be two of the best Par 4’s in the county.

The recently refurbished clubhouse at Alresford Golf Club offers excellent bar and catering facilities and is unique in that it offers wonderful views across the course from the patio for those enjoying a post game refreshment.

Alresford’s bar and catering services are professionally provided by the kitchen throughout the year with a reasonably priced variety of drinks, light bite snacks and meals. The club also caters for formal dining and a wide variety of social functions. Society visitors are welcomed Monday to Friday with a number of summer and winter packages which can be tailored to the requirements of the visiting group. The number of returning groups each year is a testament to the quality of the course and the warmand friendly welcome they recieve each time.

Appleby Golf Club

A natural all year round inland links course.

Located on Brackenber Moor, the course at Appleby Golf Club Course is renowned throughout Cumbria and beyond. The high quality of the greens and firm fairways which drain very well, are a big attraction for travelling golfers each year.

A par 68 which measured 5,998 yards from the championship white tees, Appleby golf course has a reputation as being a fantastic winter golf course and in fact, the fairways are presented as well during the winter as they are in the summer months.

Stunning panoramic views can be enjoyed from the course and the clubhouse building as the splendour to the North Pennines, the Howgills and the Lake District stretch out across the landscape surrounding the golf club.

The well-appointed Appleby clubhouse has been extended and refurbished over the years and today offers a wonderfully-appointed dining room, well-stocked bar, television lounge and snooker room. Whilst, the comfortable Gilf Pearson Lounge overlooks the eighteenth green and offers fantastic views whilst relaxing pre or post round.

With a Cumbrian welcome received by all, the clubhouse offers a variety of snacks, meals and drinks throughout the week.

All manner of social function can be catered for at the Appleby clubhouse which presents a great venue for a celebration!

A Gem of a Course on the North Yorkshire Coast

As well as being the largest county in the north of England, Yorkshire is also home to find your perfect golf break with hundreds of accommodation providers, restaurants,

A traditional northern town, Filey is a unique, quiet; and quite beautiful, small seaside town on the picturesque North Yorkshire coast. In years gone by, Filey has been proud of its maritime heritage. Today’s Filey proudly retains its fishing heritage; and the warmth and friendliness of its townsfolk is ever-present making the town an enjoyable place for a short break of rural holiday.

Established in 1897, Filey Golf Club really is a jewel in North Yorkshire’s golfing crown.

The original course at Filey was situated on land north of the old fishing town. The club relocated to its current location on the south-side of the town two years later in 1899 with the design of the new links course commissioned by legendary golf course architect, James Braid.

Filey’s management teams then purchased adjoining land some years later allowing for the addition of a nine hole academy course. This is always in great condition and, like the championship course – can be played all-year-round. The Academy is ideal for beginners and those wishing to touch up on their short game.

The old clubhouse building at Filey Golf Club was replaced with a fresh modern premises in 2002. Renowned for its friendly, welcoming atmosphere, the well-appointed, clubhouse is the perfect place to relax and unwind pre or post round.

With magnificent views across the golf course and beyond to the surrounding North Yorkshire countryside, guests can enjoy spacious lounges and well-stocked bars as well as outside areas ideal for al fresco eating and drinking during the summer months.

Sherwood Forest Golf Club

The par 70 golf course measures a whopping 6,806 yards from the championship tees and features no less than ninety eight bunkers as well as long carries over punishing swathes of heather. Sherwood Forest is not for the faint-hearted and represents a true test of golf for even the most accomplished of golfer.

The Sherwood Forest clubhouse is home to several spacious lounges and comfortable bar areas as well as a superbly-appointed restaurant which can seat up to 80 guests at any one time.

Chiltern Forest won’t disappoint

Buckinghamshire, one of the Home Counties bordering Greater London is one of the south east of England’s most affluent counties. The regions proximity to the capital and excellent transport links make it a popular destination for golf breaks, with quite a few of the counties golf courses featuring in the Top 100 Golf Courses in Britain & Ireland.

Many courses boast views across the Chiltern Hills an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as The Vale of Aylesbury. The River Thames and the Great Union Canal also meander through the county providing a further challenge for the region’s golfers.

Llanymynech GC

Seascale Golf Club

The West Coast of Cumbria features a fabulous abundance of golf courses representing different challenges, whilst matching all levels and experience. While the course is relatively shorter by today’s standards, it’s not to be underestimated. The small island greens, often surrounded by rough and a flat lie being a rarity makes it a challenge. It’s only a par 65 from the yellow tees but if the wind is blowing especially on some of the par-3 holes you will be nearer 70.

Yorkshires long-acknowledged premier course is said to be the finest inland layout in the country. A catalogue of impressive Top100 World rankings, place Ganton amongst the ‘Who’s Who’ of the world’s top golfing locations.

Golf was first played in Ganton in the summer of 1891. The course was originally laid out by St Andrews’ Tom Chisolm, and has since been touched by most leading golf course architects over the years, including Braid, Colt, Fowler, Taylor and MacKenzie. Wilmslow is the only course in Cheshire where Ryder Cup points could be accumulated by European Tours Professional golfers. The course has hosted the Greater Manchester Open and the Martini International which heralded the arrival of some of the great German and Spanish golfers.

In the late 70s and early 80s, no less than six Ryder Cup captains of the future tried to master The Wilmslow golf course. Nine members of the European team who won the Ryder Cup in 1985, played in the Martini International at Wilmslow in 1983, In more recent times, Wilmslow has been selected as a regional qualifying course for The Open.

Dore & Totley Golf Club, Sheffield

Founded in 1913, Dore & Totley Golf Club was recognised as the South Yorkshire Golf Club of the Year by Your Golfer in 2019. As testimony to the golf club’s excellent course and outstanding facilities, the Directors selected Dore & Totley Golf Club as the number one course in South Yorkshire.

Dore & Totley Golf Club is located in the Sheffield suburb of Bradway, close to the Derbyshire Peak District. The private members Club boasts a tremendous mature parkland golf course with subtle features and limited undulations - making it an excellent course for all levels of golf as well as visiting society groups.

The course was initially laid out by Alistar McKenzie and further enhanced by James Braid, both acknowledged masters of Golf Course design, their influences are still evident today.

The course saw major investment in May 2005 with five completely new holes added, and the redesign of the remaining holes to create the current yardage of 6,576 yards from the championship, white tees with a par of 72.
