BIOGRAPHY

Charlotte was born in a small regional town, but has travelled the world extensively with her parents. Her designs are often linked in some way to her many experiences of different cultures, natural environments or cities. Designs come from within, when shapes, colours or textures are triggered by a memory or an experience. The designs develop from that initial response, through many different stages, to create an end product that is pleasing to the eye. She enjoys the process of design and all the elements required to create something beautiful as well as functional. When the initial seed has been planted in her mind, developing it further with the use of trend research, gaining inspiration, collecting fabric samples and creating a toile is a natural progression. It is not only about the final design, but how you get to it that gives the garment personality and brings it to life. Charlotte believes fashion should be a reflection of the person and while she designs with a target market in mind, the garments are versatile and can be personalised with the addition of detachable elements. Elements that allow the client to choose to accentuate or divert attention from a certain part of her body. Charlotte has an interest in exploring the business and marketing side of fashion. She believes that the connection between the creative process and the business/marketing development is critical to the success of the collection.

CONCEPT STATEMENT Juxtaposition. While appearing to be contrasting elements of voluminous aspects and sleek lines, the end result is a collection that melds together, resulting in elegance, sophistication and drama. Inspired by Giambattista Valli and Elie Saab, my designs are created to enhance the special occasions throughout a person’s life. They are designed to be dramatic and eye-catching, yet retain a certain element of fun, reflecting the occasion. The drama is delivered by including one or more elements of volume on the garments. This element may include multiple layers of gathered tulle, which on their own, can become the statement. This tulle may be attached to another fabric to give structure and definition to that fabric. Either way, the addition of tulle adds the desired effect of volume. The collection also includes large puff sleeves and a long train. While the touch of volume creates drama, the silhouette is quite sleek. The main part of the body is covered by close-fitting fabric which accentuates the clients figure, allowing her to feel beautiful, confident and glamorous. Versatility is a very important concept that is incorporated into the collection. The idea that a train may not always be suitable for the occasion, or puff sleeves may be too much, most of the voluminous pieces of the garments are detachable. This allows the client to personalise the look she wants. The detachable pieces are interchangeable and can be used or left off to completely change the overall look. Glamour, beauty, sophistication, drama, confidence, versatility and fun are all words and concepts that are used to create and describe the collection that you see.

TARGET MARKET

My target market is a working young woman, probably in her early twenties to her early thirties. The collections are all mix and match making them versatile and can grow with the consumer, lasting longer, adjusting only certain pieces. She is quite well off, but doesn’t necessarily want to be constantly purhcasing items of clothing in the high hundrends, low thousands. She would be happy to spend more on a statement piece for a special occasion, but not that often. She is someone who could travel for work, and if not, loves to travel in her own time. Comfort for everyday and items that don’t wrinkle is something she prefers. She is also very feminine, but loves to make a statement.

BODY ONE DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

13

Began by creating the sleeves. I realised I needed a structured fabric (white one) and placed it underneath the teal sleeve (opposite page). I also made the sleeve larger. There may be a strap across the back (perhaps clear bra strap?) to hold sleeves up. The volume on the train is perfect, needed to find more ways to add volume to tulle skirt, but not be too thick at the waist. A petticoat was placed under the tulle skirt. The sleeves and train are detachable. The ribbon straps tied into a bow at the back hold the sleeves up.

14

BODY TWO DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

15

The jumpusit fitted well the first time. The darts were adjusted slightly for the final. The bow worked perfectly the first time. The hanging down part was just made a little longer. The overskirt worked well. The band was made larger as the belt needed to fit through loops. The skirt was also made a little longer.

16

BODY TWO DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

17

The first image of the sleeve on the mannequin wasn’t flared enough, therefore the flare was doubled and a seam was placed at the top. An extra layer of tulle was added.

18

BODY THREE DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

19

First I needed to adjust the shape of the bra. Once this was adjusted I transferred it to the dress. The black ruffle was a toile with a five times gather. It was to be placed on the bottom of the dress - unfortunately it was too heavy. Therefore, I created a whole skirt in it, but with a three times gather.

20

BODY THREE DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

21

The drop shoulder dress with the sleeves was adjusted once the ruffle was taken off to make it more interesting. It became a shift dress with a mermaid style flare with tulle underneath on the bottom. It is panelled with the hem being scalloped edges from the fabric.. The buttons were changed from the front to the back. The sleeves then became unnecessary.
