DIOR
Christian Dior was a French fashion designer born in Granville, France 1905. He founded the house of Christian Dior on December 16th, 1946. Through his couture, Dior’s creations became the hegemony of the fashion industry in the decade following WWII. Christian Dior gained major influence as a fashion designer during the late 1940s and 1950s when he launched his very first collection, “New Look”, in 1947. Due to the silhouette of his voluptuous collection, he gained fame at the time, in France, that it
seemed as if he was an institution rather than a man. After his death, Yves Saint Laurent took on Dior’s legacy when replacing him as the creative director. The legacy of Dior was based of Christian Dior’s childhood as a wealthy socialite until his family faced bankruptcy; forcing him to work as a freelance designer. Hence this was carried through Dior offering ready-to-wear item such as watches, accessories, fragrances and makeup [The Legacy of Fashion Icon Christian Dior Lives On, 2021].

The Smith’s personal brand aligns with Dior conceptualising feminism through active women. Hence, The Smiths act as a visual representation of the brand’s values and legacy as they are a youthful feminist duo who are also invested in the high fashion market. Additionally, Willow Smith’s character aligns with Diors themes of mythology and surrealism as she is non-conventional with her beliefs and how she expresses herself
as an individual. This is illustrated through her sense of style as well as hermodelling work throughout the years. Hence, The Smiths personal brand is well suited to represent denim in Dior as well as Dior’s legacy. and surrealism as they are nonconventional with their beliefs and how they expresses themselves as individuasl. This is illustrated through their sense of style shown through their modelling work throughout the years.

Maria Grazia Chiuri is an Italian fashion designer and is the current creative director at Dior. She claims that her work is “rooted in passion, study and a desire to be on the frontline, with [her] own interpretation and... personal way of living the extraordinary adventure of being a woman”.Through this, her aim to “translate words into
objects” in a manner which communicates the strength of the ideas behind them is achieved. She has continuously succeeded in this through creating garments which act as a tangible symbol for metaphysical concepts such as feminism [Maria Grazia Chiuri on the Future of the Fashion Industry, 2021].

DIOR & DENIM 18
The advertising campaign for the Spring-Summer 2020 collection, depicts naturelike themes. John Galliano attributed the history of Dior through creating g l a m o r o u s silhouettes which were inspired by the photographs of Catherine Dior - Christian Dior’s sister. The artistic director of the campaign, Brigitte Niedermair, selected the models, Selena Forrest and Ruth Bell as they embodied the “spirit of these designs”. The shoots communicate
denim as a lux material through the accessories of the bag and pearl necklace. The photographer, Adrien Dirand, also positioned the models in a way which highlights the luxury feel of the garment through taking shots of parts of the garment rather than the full outfit, with the background illustrating the signature pattern which Dior used throughout this campaign. Hence, this accentuates the garment to be high fashion rather than workwear.
