‘In the Name of Bad Taste’ is based around a tongue in cheek view of practicality in high fashion with influences of gaudy 2000s glamour in an oversized yet sexual manner. In the Name of Bad Taste focuses on the idea of excess and over-the-top luxury where there is no practical functionality in the real world; juxtaposed with heavy materials traditionally used in men’s workwear and embellishments designed for practicality, that in actuality don’t provide any purpose. Elements of the design are influenced by aesthetics of camp and its relationship to high fashion by taking from moments in fashion commonly seen as ugly such as the cargo pants, low rise jeans and over the top gaudiness of the 2000s, and thereby turned into a trending runway silhouette. The collection focuses on the zeitgeist of the 90s going into the 2000s when sex appeal was prioritised over elegance and life was light hearted.
I aim to demonstrate this concept with the tight superfuture bodice top which accentuates the body and merges the silhouette of a typical undergarment with a heavy duty denim. This will pair with the large baggy denim low-rise cargo pants which will be covered in straps to highlight the idea of practicality, inspired by parachute harnesses (the epitome of functionality). This will be worn with an ontrend oversized shirt with a minimal front to balance the proportions of colour and texture. The straps of the pants will make their way over the oversized shirt to add shape and restraint to the silhouette. Although the silhouette of the body is oversized, both the pants and shirt will
contain multiple straps with metal hardware to tighten and loosen to the wearer’s needs. The target buyer of the collection is a young girl in her early 20s who has taste in fashion and art but through her knowledge of popculture and fashion history, can understand the satire and 2000s references. The bleaching technique applied to the denim on the pants and Superfuture top differentiates them from other denim garments which will appeal to the buyer who wants to separate themselves from the crowd. The technique of bleaching the material allows for a unique product each time which satisfies the buyer who wants a product specific to them that no one else has. Since the buyer is a girl in her 20s, she will have a social lifestyle such as going to parties, fashion events, festivals and day-to-day outings. The 3-piece collection will combat this functionality as although it is excessively baggy, the fastening straps and multiple layers can be worn and styled in many different ways allowing for interchangeability. The silhouette of the Superfuture top and lowrise pants will allow for the buyer to still feel confident and sensual without feeling overwhelmed by the amount of fabric.The use of flat-felled seams and binding with double top-stitching on the heavy denim will result in a high quality and timeless garment that the buyer is looking for. The buyer is interested in sustainability and slow fashion, therefore this collection is versatile and long-lasting. The unique selling point of the collection is focus on hardware and utility combined with the baggy and unconventional silhouette playing with the idea of tackyness and sex appeal.
