THE CONCEPT
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE ON THE EDGE?
A series of bright and tonal brush strokes and dynamic, active layers. A pallet that pushes the limits of abstractism with no compromise to the allusive composition.
and the sleeves. The piping references the brush stokes that is found in abstract art. The pants in this collection is a work of Gina Werfels ‘Skeletal Structure.’ The art covers the pants in an explosion of colours and brush strokes. These pants are a wide leg jean with a concealed button fly at the front. Different sized panels have been sewn together during construction which gives the illusion of different sized artworks curated together. The print has been broken up by two side panels in a navy and yellow colour, which again, reflects the colour field art type. The third item is a cropped blouse made in the same printed fabric to co-ordinate with the pants. The blouse features an oval cut out at the back which reflects the shapes found in abstract expression art. The hem is fit with orange elastic to reflect the sport appeal.
Edge of expression is a collection that merges the artistic flair of abstract design with a touch of sporty appeal. With a combination of a psychedelic and block colours, abstract is the evident characteristic of this collection. Expression in the art printed on the garments denotes the idea that it has distanced its relation with reality. Shapes, colours and textures are used to achieve existence without leaving the boundary of what is interpreted in the art. Without any elaboration, it is a collection that pushes loose street wear to collide with luxury. The painting “skeletal structures” has been a source of inspiration for these garments. The composition by American artist, Gina Werfel, is an abstract piece, saturated with layers on layers of colourful brush strokes and spray painted streaks. Hues of pinks intrigued her, formulating her idea of pushing the limits of the painting without jeopardising the content she has already created. Abstract expressionism is an art movement where artists create their work with subjective emotional intentions or emphasis. This type of art reflects the notion that art comes from the unconscious mind. To Gina, her art refers to memories. The emotive expression composed in her work emits suggestions which are open to interpretation by the viewer.
Edge of Expression will be sold at Gr8 Tokyo. Retailing at $64,600 Yen for the shirt jacket, $42,100 Yen for the pants and the blouse for $12,200 Yen and will sit next to brands such as Phlemuns and Vallila to stand out to the art style market Consumers of the Edge of Expression collection are arty and sporty. They like to express themselves in colour and aren’t afraid to stand out. This individual is confident and likes to feel comfortable in what they wear. This collection is suitable for young adult, street wear lovers who buy their clothing with the intention to wear them often and for them to last a lifetime. The pieces in Edge of expression can be worn together or separately. The unique yet contemporary design allows them to be mixed and matched with everything so they can still be worn when new and emerging fashion arises.
Edge of expression is a collection consisting of three main pieces, a long, oversized shirt jacket featuring a statement zip at the front and large pockets. The solid dark blue colour of the jacket is a representation of colour field abstractism. This type of art is characterised by the large block colours and shapes, typically in one colour in which artists fill their page with. This shirt jacket features piping down the front and back 4
