The heart of Hobart
client profile: The building of choice is a church in Tasmania, Australia; the history and heritage that comes with the property and meets the needs for Zoe. This will be a church conversion property, that will result in a beautiful high-end residential home for the family. The rich history behind the building and architecture will complement the eclectic style that comes with Zoe’s persona. The home will be in need as a minimum of a kitchen, dining room, living room, at least 2 bedrooms, home office, laundry, 3 bathrooms, and rumpus area. Sustainability and innovation through function and aesthetic will be the embodiment of the overall designed space; as well as mixing history with contemporary design. “The most successful church conversions are the ones that embrace the unusual layout”, Paul Uhlmann; the beginnings of this design will encourage difference from the homes already on the market.

Zoe is now a part of a ‘Conventional Family Life’ segment, that usually represent middle class Australia. As she has now entered her mid 30’s, Zoe and her husband Josh of three years are finally ready to settle down. The great Australian dream is to own your own home in the suburbs. This demographic in particular good, solid and reliable products; understandably their home is to represent ideas of practicality and function. Zoe and Josh have a little boy on the way, and want to settle down in their forever home. Before marriage, Zoe traveled around the world, collecting valuables and art along the way to remind her of all her trips.
Built over two years from fine sandstone of a pinkish brown colour, it was designed by local architect Francis Butler in High Victorian Gothic style with French overtones; with its tower and spire standing 37 metres high. In late July 1872 the stained-glass windows for the church had arrived from the Ferguson Urie and Lyon stained-glass company of Melbourne. A further two “multicolored pattern” windows arrived by the Southern Cross from Victoria on the 4th of August 1872. The land area is 838m2 with a floor area of 456m2, it included 3 car spaces on the property, as well as being close to the bus stop which is 23m away. Intricate in design, Hobart is home to some of Australia’s most beautifully historic architecture that still stands to this day.

73 Brisbane Street, Hobart, TAS, 7000. The property is a church and belongs to the historical and heritage community of Tasmania, its protected architecture is the personality of the heart of the state, making it a P60 land zoning area. The heritage building was built as a memorial congregational church dedicated to Henry Hopkins (1787-1870) as the founder, placed on the corner of Elizabeth and Brisbane streets in Hobart founded by Henry Hopkins on the 16th August 1870 and was formally opened on Thursday 7th November 1872.

History and its great influence have produced gorgeous artefacts that go beyond structurally sound buildings and intricate architecture. Hobart class on its own and oldest buildings have proven to draw in many crowds and remain attractive to tourists, new families and retirees. Finding myself curious I ventured through its history online to find myself within its city centre on Brisbane Street. Standing tall on this corner block stood centuries old church that deemed fit enough to convert into a beautiful family home. The layout of the home will meet the minimum requirement of the clients needs, with having additional space for design. The interior of the home will be immersed with nature, functionality, and unity for family lifestyles.

The Heart of Hobart is an embrace of conventional family lifestyle and how is can suit both functionality ans aesthetics equally. The phrase ‘The Heart of Hobart’ is a play on words ‘The Heart of the Home’, it is suited for the overall concept of the design, as the church itself sits in the centre of Hobart. The conversion fit for a growing family will live on for decades, the mixture of old and new life will created integrated lifestyles for future generations; by giving thanks to heritage and history. The home is unique that screams with character and strength, highlighting that architecture with interior themes of nature, texture and light. Each space within the home will be a tribute to the landscape that surrounds Hobart and the family being well travelled, trinkets filled with memories will give personality to the overall design.
