Highway 96 bridge work continues this summer BY SARA MARIE MOORE VADNAIS HEIGHTS EDITOR
WHITE BEAR LAKE — Work on the Highway 96 bridge project, originally scheduled to be completed last winter, will likely last through the end of August. The bridge was scheduled to be closed this past weekend so crews could apply a chip seal (thin coat of asphalt and rock chips) to the bridge deck surface but the closure was rescheduled due to the windy, cold weather forecasted.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) stated they will announce a new closure date after the Fourth of July. The project was not completed in the winter as planned due to delays in utility work, said Denise Workcuff, metro project public affairs coordinator with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). “Utility work at the retaining wall caused the delay in completion of the SEE BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION, PAGE 9A

Apricots, apples, cherries, berries, kiwi, plums, peaches and pears create a summertime color palette in one Vadnais Heights yard. About 30 years ago, Kent Dahl began planting fruit trees unique to Minnesota as a hobby. Asian pears and Arctic kiwi are among the more exotic fruits he has nurtured over the years. He also has about half a dozen varieties of plums and nearly a dozen varieties of pears and apples. There are also apricot, peach, nectarine and hazelnut trees. There are about half a dozen varieties of cherry trees. “They are hard to grow in Minnesota,” Kent noted. There are also blueberry, strawberry, raspberry and black raspberry patches among the fruit trees. For locals interested in trying their hand at growing fruits uncommon in Minnesota yards, Kent recommends the Alderman plum as a starter. Gardeners will also have to be prepared to deal with animals and bugs, he said. He handpicks plum bugs off his trees and puts fencing around others. Kent has grown some apple trees from seed and also tried his hand successfully at grafting. When one of his apple trees grown from seed blew over in the wind about a decade ago, it began producing SEE BACKYARD ORCHARD, PAGE 9A PAUL DOLS | PRESS PUBLICATIONS
