Greenhaven Drive project gets green light BY ERIK SUCHY CONTRIBUTING WRITER

If you live along Greenhaven Drive or on nearby streets, you may soon see some changes coming to your neighborhood. “It’s been a long process to get here,” Public Works Director Jim Hauth said of the city’s long-anticipated Greenhaven Drive project, which will move forward with construction and planned modifications set to begin this month. The work will include narrowing Greenhaven Drive from 36 to 26 feet to accommodate a bituminous trail and stormwater management improvements. Clearbrook Lane, Pondview Court and Greendale Lane will undergo full-depth pavement reclamation along with the addition of a 10-foot boulevard and trail on the north and east sides of Greenhaven Drive. Following construction, the boulevard will be restored with turf grass. Homeowners who live alongside it will have the option to replace it with alternative plantings such as perennials or pollinator-friendly plants, provided they do not interfere with drainage or utilities. It will be the homeowner’s responsibility to install and maintain these plantings.

‘Trash to Treasure’

PAUL DOLS | PRESS PUBLICATIONS

The city of Vadnais Heights will host a Trash to Treasure Day on Saturday, April 18. Vadnais Heights residents can place usable items they no longer want on the curb in front of their house. Items should clearly be labeled “free.” New this year, local businesses will participate in the event, too, by setting out “treasures.”

Musician behind ‘Song A Day Project’ now calls White Bear Lake home Singer-songwriter Zachary Scot Johnson is new to White Bear Lake, but hardly new to music. A lifelong musician who began studying violin and piano in first grade, Johnson later pursued violin in college before teaching himself guitar and a host of other stringed instruments. Inspired by the songwriting of Joni Mitchell, he has built a career performing roughly 100 shows a year and sharing music online through his long-running “Song A Day Project.” The project, which began in 2010 as an experiment, has since grown into a daily YouTube series featuring hundreds of collaborations with artists ranging from local musicians to Grammy winners and actors. His YouTube channel is coming up on its 5,000th consecutive day milestone. Press Publications recently asked Johnson about his musical roots, the unexpected longevity of the project and what it’s been like to bring the routine of a daily song to his new home in White Bear Lake.

Q. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background in music. How long have you lived in White Bear Lake? A. I'm just moving into White Bear Lake! I've actually only been here for a couple of weeks. As for my background in music, I started taking violin and piano lessons when I was in first grade and eventually went to college as a violin major. I fell in love with the music of Joni Mitchell when I was in late middle school and somewhere around there started teaching myself guitar and eventually mandolin, banjo, dobro and other instruments. Seeing a few singer/ songwriters who were able to perform solo acoustic really changed my trajectory, and I was pretty convinced as early as high school that that's what I wanted to do. Somehow, I've made it a reality. Q. What first inspired you to start The Song A Day Project and why do you think it has continued for so long?
