Tucked just a few miles apart, the towns of Hugo and Centerville each offer their own unique charm — especially when it comes to their gift shop scenes.

While small in size, both communities are rich in creativity, local pride and an eye for the thoughtful details that turn a simple shop into an experience.

Whether you're searching for handcrafted candles, quirky home décor, locally made apparel, or just a little something special, Hugo and Centerville invite you to slow down, browse and discover.

In Hugo, customers will find The Argyle Moose, which opened in August 2020. Owned by Celeste and Patrick Knipping, the business prides itself on showcasing Minnesota vendors. Upon walking in the store, customers feel like they are at home. They are greeted by some inside jokes that only Hugonians, especially Facebook users, will understand — like a “Land of 10,000 booms” sign.

The store offers a variety of clothing, candles, jewelry, home décor, art, books, puzzles, greeting cards, pottery, bags, dog items, skin care products, spices, wood products (coasters,

bottle openers, journals), glassware, masks and more.

In Centerville, at Humble Roots Boutique, visitors will discover a captivating collection of Minnesota-made items and handcrafted treasures. The boutique takes immense pride in showcasing the talent of local artisans and the dedication of homegrown companies. From unique home decor to captivating fashion pieces, immerse yourself in the beauty and authenticity of Minnesota craftsmanship. Some items are also available for purchase online.

The Argyle Moose is located at 14755 Victor Hugo Blvd in Suite #110. For more information, visit www. theargylemoose.com. Humble Roots Boutique is located at 7095 Centerville Road. For more information, visit https:// humbleroots.boutique.

residents can attend a show at the Hanifl Performing Arts Center, take an art class, participate in library programs and spend a day at one of the beaches surrounding the many lakes in the area. There is plenty available to keep you busy all year round in the various communities.

Every community is full of hidden gems — from local businesses and restaurants to a wide range of annual festivals and community celebrations. Events such as farmers markets, art fairs, music festivals, parades and community festivals like Hugo Good Neighbor Days in Hugo and Fete des Lacs in Centerville bring the community together during the summer. In the winter, residents can venture out to the various parks and trails located around the community or take a brief drive to one of the five alpine ski resorts in the area.

When there is not a large community festival going on,

The cities of Hugo and Centerville each offer their own unique charm, especially when it comes to their gift shop scenes, which feature a variety of local makers and artists.

As always, readers should check their community website or call prior to venturing out for a day filled with activity.

Lions Volunteer Park

The city’s oldest park, Lions Park, received a major makeover in 2021-2022 and was renamed Lions Volunteer Park.

The City Council approved a master plan for the park back in 2015. The council revitalized the project and approved a feasibility study in June 2020. In October that year, a community workshop was held and three stakeholder committees were formed to refine the design of the playground, pavilion and overall park layout.

The council approved the designs and authorized the preparation of construction documents in January 2021. The Planning Commission unanimously recommended the council approve the site plan,

which the council approved in April 2021. Construction began in July 2021, after Good Neighbor Days, and a grand opening was held in September 2022.

Lions Volunteer Park is a 10acre community park located in downtown Hugo near City Hall.  The park has an open lawn for community events. It also has a double pickleball court, tennis court and skate park. It features a 22,000 square foot fenced playground with sand play, zip lines, athletic challenge course for ages 12 and up, and play features for a wide range of ages and abilities. There is also a picnic shelter, many seating areas and restrooms available to the public. There is

a perimeter trail and a lit interior pedestrian loop for a variety of walking and rolling options.

The community facility, called the Peder Pedersen Pavilion, is available to rent.  The 5,500-squarefoot pavilion is named after Peder Pederson, who has been a Hugo Lion since 1975 and previously served on the city’s Parks Commission for many years. He was instrumental in the land acquisition for Irish Avenue Park and has also been very active with Habitat for Humanity, his homeowner’s association, church and installing city playgrounds over the years.

Lions Volunteer Park is located at 5524 Upper 146th St. N.

Metropolitan Council

390 Robert St. N. St Paul, MN 55101, 651-602-1000 or metrocouncil.org.

Overview

The Met Council, established by the state Legislature in 1967, coordinates planning and development within the seven-county Twin Cities metropolitan area. The council’s planning and policy roles merged the functions of two agencies (the Metropolitan Transit Commission and the Metropolitan Waste Control Commission) into one. The council works with local communities to operate the region’s largest bus system; collect and treat wastewater; engage communities and the public in planning for future growth; provide forecasts of the region’s population and household growth; provide affordable housing opportunities; provide planning, acquisitions and funding for a regional system of parks and trails; and provide a framework for decisions and implementation for regional services including aviation, transportation, parks and open space, water quality and water management.

Governance

The 17-member Met Council has 16 members who each represent a geographic district and one chairman, Charlie Zelle, who serves at-large. They all are appointed by and serve at the pleasure of the governor. The state Senate confirms council member appointments.
