SCHOOL BOARD VACANCY: Appointment to be made next month PAGE 15
YEAR IN REVIEW 2025 Before we say goodbye to 2025 and welcome in 2026, it is a tradition for the Shoreview Press to look back at some of the most memorable moments this past year. In 2025, pages were filled with a variety of news, government meetings, events, schools, sports, businesses, the arts and much more. Some of the most memorable stories are the ones that featured local residents—Mounds View athletes found success in their respective sports; the Slice of Shoreview once again brought the community together for a weekend of fun; and many in the community had a very busy year. See pages 7-10 for a full recap of this year.

Shoreview teen wins 2025 Caring Youth Award BY PREETI MATHUR CONTRIBUTING WRITER
When most teenagers are figuring out how to balance homework, extracurricular activities and sleep, Shoreview resident Charlie Neuman is doing it all and more. Neuman is also work CONTRIBUTED ing, attending city and Charlie community board meetNeuman ings, coaching and winning national academic titles, and sending off college applications. The senior at Avalon School in St. Paul received the Shoreview Human Rights Commission’s 2025 Caring Youth Award for his outstanding civic and community engagement. The honor came as a surprise to him — not because he doesn’t care about his work, but because recognition was never his goal. He was nominated by key members of the boards and campaigns with which he has been involved. “There are so many others doing great work, and I am grateful that there were
a lot of people who vouched for me,” says Neuman. “I don’t do this kind of work to be spoken highly of, but it is meaningful to know that what I’m doing actually has an impact.” That impact is wide-ranging. Neuman serves as the youth representative on Shoreview’s Parks and Recreation Committee and sits on the Shoreview Community Foundation board as a youth member and its secretary. He first discovered youth seats on city boards in ninth grade after attending a City Council meeting; he then applied online. “I figured, if these opportunities exist, I might as well try,” he said. Community involvement and helping others have been part of Neuman’s life from an early age. He grew up in a family of five, the oldest of three siblings, where compassion wasn’t preached—it was modeled. His mother’s empathy, selflessness and guidance on doing every task well left a lasting impression, he noted. At the same time, his father, a marketing director, taught him how to network, communicate clearly and think strategically. When he was younger, he shoveled

snow for elderly neighbors. Now, as a high school student, Neuman is making many exceptional contributions. He has been an outstanding contributor and participant in his high school’s Academic Decathlon team. He has been the top scorer in Minnesota for three consecutive years and most recently earned a national title in his division. He was also awarded a leadership award and has been instrumental in keeping the program running after the school considered eliminating it. Neuman has helped tutor other students in math and the social sciences and has worked on creating new academic standards for high school social sciences that highlight Native American history. This task included writing a speech and speaking to Congress on the importance of ethnic studies. Neuman is also a member of the National Honor Society and has a GPA of 3.99. “He does not have a 4.0 because of a self-graded class where he gave himself a B,” noted his mother, Judy Knott. He is also a full-time PSEO scholar at the University of Minnesota.

When asked how he manages all his commitments, he says he prioritizes based on deadlines and on other time management skills he has developed. His favorite moments aren’t about winning accolades. “My idea of a good time is sitting down and talking,” he says. “I look for friends who are curious, kind and willing to actually listen.” He is an excellent listener and counsels his peers on potential roadblocks in their personal and academic lives. That mindset also carries into his politics. Neuman has volunteered on local and national political campaigns. He believes real progress starts with understanding — not arguing. “A lot of people want the same things,” he says. “We just disagree on how to get there.” As Neuman waits to hear back from the University of Chicago, where he has applied for early admission — Grinnell and Carleton colleges are backups — he says the award feels less like a finish line and more like encouragement. “It’s a reminder to keep going,” he says, “to keep bringing your best self to the work.”
