City of Shoreview asks for Destination Shoreview 2040 zoning code feedback BY LOGAN GION STAFF WRITER
The city of Shoreview is updating its zoning and subdivision codes to align with the goals in Destination Shoreview 2040, the city’s comprehensive plan. They are encouraging residents to provide feedback on the proposed updates, then review public comments at the Planning Commission meeting on Aug. 25. “What do we want Shoreview to look like in terms of housing?” said Shoreview Mayor Sue Denkinger. “We are a city with a lot of lake lots, irregular lots. We’re not a really linear neighborhood. What a great time to take a look at this and say, ‘What is okay?’” Destination Shoreview 2040 is the city’s comprehensive plan, which the Metropolitan Council approved in December 2021. According to the zoning update project overview, to ensure consistency with the comprehensive plan, the city will adjust zoning codes to make them easier to navigate and understand.
Code language also will be brought into uniformity with state statutes and case law. “It’s very important to look at, because these will be adopted. It’s a chance to speak up right now, and those will eventually make their way into the comprehensive plan,” said Denkinger. The city is especially looking for input regarding mixed-use and arterial developments. According to the overview, a mixed-use zone on Highway 96 and Lexington Avenue “is intended to encourage site and building design that creates a unique, vibrant town center.” The proposed uses include higher-density residential, institutional, commercial and recreational uses. Arterial developments are special zoning rules for properties adjacent to certain major roads. This includes specific setback requirements and a maximum building height of 75 feet. Shoreview City Council Member Cory Springhorn will not seek reelection this November. Instead, he plans to encourage young people to run for local government. In a recent interview, Springhorn said that during his time Cory on the council his top priority Springhorn has been planning and responsibility, balancing citizens’ wants with financial reality. He also highlighted his current role as the president of the board of directors for the Lake Johanna Fire Department, a role that coincided with the July 29 opening of the fire department’s new headquarters, Station 110, in Arden Hills. He is currently the longest-serving member of the council, with nearly 12 years in office.
