North Oaks is a unique private community of trails, lakes and wetlands that has approximately 2100 homes that range from single family, condominiums, assisted living & nursing home care, to townhomes, both attached and detached. The land that makes up North Oaks is approximately 5500 acres in size, was owned by James J Hill and was first developed starting in the 1950’s by his grandson, Louis Hill, Jr. The reason this community is private is because the home owners own to the middle of the road and have easements for guests and homeowners to cross over the city.
The North Oaks Home Owners’ Association oversees the amenities, trails and lakes of North Oaks and owns many parcels in North Oaks that extend from the lakes and amenity spaces and include ice rinks, ball fields and tennis courts. The amenities and activities within North Oaks makes for a close knit community that people love to call home.
The City is split between two school
districts. Approximately one third of the City are in the White Bear Lake School District and two thirds are within the Mounds View School District. Residents in North Oaks tend to age in place with many long-time residents, and many eventually age to Waverly Gardens, a Presbyterian Homes senior community that features independent living, assisted living, nursing home care and physical therapy/transitional care.
North Oaks is conveniently located approximately 15-20 minutes from downtown St. Paul and approximately 2530 minutes to downtown Minneapolis and is a pretty easy drive to both the airport (30-35 min) and to Duluth and Lake Superior (just two hours, 10 minutes north on 35E). Our city consists of a large array of housing stock - ranging in age from just a few years old to older 1950’s ramblers turning 75 years old this year.

The cities of Shoreview, Vadnais Heights and North Oaks each have something to offer everyone. Events such as Vadnais Heights Days or the Slice of Shoreview at Island Lake Park bring the community together during the summer. The residents of North Oaks can spend a summer afternoon on the golf course or at the Pleasant Lake beach.
Here at the Press, we made the decision to keep the community calendar hyper-local, only focusing on the cities within Press Publications’ coverage area. But have no fear, within this edition, you’ll still find a wide variety of activities to participate in and attend throughout the year. Our communities are vibrant, and host multiple of events throughout the year to keep residents busy and engaged.
Residents can explore various trails located across Shoreview and Vadnais Heights. Shoreview has almost 90 miles of sidewalks and trails that allow residents to connect to parks and shopping areas. Vadnais Heights features about 13 miles of dedicated trails. The Vadnais-Snail Lakes Regional Park provides significant paved and dirt trails varying in distance. Stop by the Cafesjian Art Trust Museum in
Shoreview to view the private art collection of Gerard Cafesjian. Cafesjian’s collection features nearly 3,000 works of art and continues to grow. The museum offers drop-in hours on Fridays and Saturdays as well as guided tours on Thursdays and select times on Fridays.
If you’re looking to try out a local brewery stop by Big Wood Brewery in Vadnais Heights, tucked just off the freeway but removed from the bustle of nearby retail corridors. It aims to offer something closer to an escape than a quick stop. There is a little bit of something old and new on every page. We hope you enjoy your time in these vibrant communities and find them as welcoming as we do.
Green Team volunteers create, support sustainability initiatives
The Vadnais Heights Green Team is a voluntary community committee dedicated to leading, coordinating, and engaging residents in sustainability efforts throughout Vadnais Heights. Built on collaboration and local action, the Green Team brings together residents, business leaders and students who share a commitment to environmental stewardship and climate resilience.
At its core, the Green Team’s mission is to create, promote and support local climate action and sustainability initiatives that strengthen environmental resilience within the Vadnais Heights community. By encouraging practical, community-based solutions, the group empowers individuals and organizations to adopt sustainable best practices in everyday life.
Participation is open to everyone. The inclusive approach ensures that sustainability becomes a shared responsibility and a collective achievement.
One of the Green Team’s newest initiatives is a “food forest,” in Community Park, which will feature food grown from native Minnesota plants for residents to enjoy. The forest will not only provide an abundant supply of nutritious edibles but also encourage community engagement in learning about healthy soil practices that support the ecosystem.
The idea for the forest originated after team members participated in a Sustainability in Practice program offered by the National Recreation and Park Association. The team decided to create a forest to offer both community education and
food for consumption.
The Green Team, along with the city of Vadnais Heights and the Vadnais Heights Lions Club, maintains a Little Green Library at the compost drop-off site at City Hall. There, visitors will find resources related to sustainability and environmentalism; a seed library with native seeds for residents to take home and plant in their own gardens; and books to borrow about nature and the environment for all ages.

Cafesjian Art Trust Museum showcases private collection
The Cafesjian Art Trust Museum, also known as “The CAT” by Shoreview residents, showcases the private art collection of art lover and philanthropist Gerard Cafesjian.
The museum was founded by his daughter, and North Oaks resident, Kathie Cafesjian Baradaran in the fall of 2022. When Cafesjian Baradaran’s father passed away in 2013, she began the process of combing through the massive art collection that he spent over six decades acquiring.
Cafesjian’s private art collections includes over 4,000 pieces, including studio glass by Dale Chihuly, Toots Zynsky, Stanislav Libensky and Jaroslava Brychtová, and modern and contemporary artwork by Arshile Gorky, Victor Vasarely, Georges Braque and
many other world-renowned artists.
Sitting Figures, a sculpture by Lynn Chadwick, and a kinetic aluminum and glass sculpture, The Glassinator, by Andrew Carson, greet visitors at the front of the museum.
The museum showcases art from Cafesjian’s private collection throughout the year. New exhibits are put on display every few months. At select times on Thursdays and Fridays, residents can reserve a tour of the most current exhibit with a museum curator. Every Saturday, residents can drop by the museum to check out the latest exhibit without an appointment.
In 2024, the CAT Museum Teen Council was formed. The council features six to seven high
schoolers from the Twin Cities area. Members spend eight months learning about museum work. On top of learning about the different careers in museum work and what goes into running an art museum, members also have the opportunity to plan and run several public programs. They also provide hands-on assistant to museum staff on a variety of projects.
Residents can also participate in various community events, including baby time, CAT kids and Preschool Pals. Towards the end of summer, the museum puts on a family festival for the community. The festival includes art-making activities, gallery activities and more.

Combined, the cities of Shoreview and Vadnais Heights have approximately 103 miles of sidewalks and trails.
In Shoreview, you can find almost nearly 90 miles of sidewalks and trails that allows residents to connect to parks, shopping areas and the community center. Most trails and sidewalks are maintained yearround which allows residents to be outside even during the colder months. Shoreview is a Bike Friendly Community.
As part of the Slice of Shoreview, the Shoreview Parks and Recreation puts on the Tourde-Trails. Those who participate can choose to bike a short route
or a long route. The short route is approximately 10-miles long and ideal of families, groups and casual cyclists. The long-route is 22-miles long. A main highlight on the long route is a detour through the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Park Reserve. Participants can take marked short cuts to customize their ride.
Vadnais Heights features approximately 13 miles of dedicated trails. The Vadnais-Snail Lakes Regional Park provides significant paved and dirt trails, including a 2.6-mile loop around Sucker Lake. For those looking to enjoy a long Sunday stroll, the Vadnais Lake Trail is roughly six miles long.
The Vadnais-Snail Lakes Regional Park allows both Shoreview and Vadnais Heights residents to enjoy the outdoors. A portion of the park is located near Snail Lake in Shoreview, while the other part overlaps with Sucker Lake in Vadnais Heights. Description: 22-acre picnic area on the east side of the lake, 41acre golf course and teaching center on the northwest side of the lake and a 30-acre natural area on the southwest side of the lake. As a third-year mayor in her second term, Krista Wolter is both a full time business owner with her own real estate business, Krista Wolter Real Estate Group, Inc. of Coldwell Banker Realty and a public servant for the city of North Oaks. Formerly a three-year board member for the North Oaks Home Owners’ Association, Krista has vast knowledge of the people and housing stock of North Oaks, along with knowing the needs of her community. She is married to her husband Tim and has three children and four grandchildren and loves serving her city. In her spare time, she can be found walking on the trails and hosting family gatherings with her extended family.
I have served on the City Council since 2023. As part of my council duties, I serve on the Lake Johanna Fire Department Board of Directors and previously served on the North Suburban Cable Commission. Prior to my service on the council, I served on the City Planning Commission for approximately four years, including as Chair. I also served on the North Oaks Homeowners Association for six years, serving four years as president. I grew up on North Oaks and have lived in the city for over 40 years. I am a corporate attorney in the health care industry.
Andrew, a native of Minnesota, moved to North Oaks in 2014 with his wife Nina and their four children. Andrew has a professional background in finance, business management, and urban planning and is a graduate of the University of Minnesota, the University of Michigan, and the University of Chicago. In addition to the North Oaks City Council, he currently serves on the boards of the Ramsey County League of Local Governments, the North Suburban Communications Commission, the North Oaks Homeowner Association Natural Environment Committee, and Walk-In Counseling Center in Minneapolis.
Grover Sayre has served on the North Oaks City Council since 2024, is the City representative for the Lake Johanna Fire Relief fund and is former Planning Commissioner for the City of North Oaks. He is a seasoned attorney with decades of experience and the co-founder of TSLG law group. Grover represents numerous local banks, commercial real estate lenders, non-profit organizations, and developers. He is an active member and past chair of the Board of Trustees for the University of Northwestern – St. Paul, and has contributed as an Assistant Scout Master while also coaching soccer. When not working with clients, Grover can be found skiing, golfing, and spending quality time with family and friends.
A dedicated public servant and mother of four, Sara Shah has called North Oaks home for over nine years with her husband, Neil. Appointed to the council in 2018 and elected in 2020 and 2024, she previously served on the Planning Commission and as VP of the Lake Johanna Fire Board. Currently, she serves on the VLAWMO Board, Natural Environment Committee, Pleasant Lake Task Force and as the council liaison to the NOHOA Board. North Oaks Guild I
North Oaks Guild 1 and Children’s Minnesota share a history of commitment and tradition that goes back more than 60 years and is still holding strong today.
The concept of developing neighborhood groups to supplement the Children’s Hospital Association (CHA) was developed in 1962. A group of women devoted to quality health care for all children, regardless of their ability to pay, established the first CHA Guild in North Oaks.
After several years, the number of women active in the guild increased to such a large number that it became difficult to meet in the member’s homes. It was then decided that in order to maintain

The original guild, North Oaks Guild 1, continues the longstanding tradition of hosting
the Holiday Home Tour and Boutique each November. Throughout the years, the event has provided much enjoyment for guild members.
Along with the commitment and camaraderie, there is a real sense of contribution to children. The event earns between $35,000 and $60,000 each year, and since its inception in 1962, the North Oaks Guild 1 has contributed over $1.3 million to support programs at Children’s Minnesota.
Membership is open to anyone committed to quality healthcare for children. Planning for the annual event is a year-round process. Meetings are held monthly.

North Oaks Guild II
Are you interested in joining a group of dynamic women to help raise money to support programs at both Twin Cities Children’s Hospitals? The North Oaks Guild II has provided over $3.5 million in funding over the past 59 years into support of programs for children and families at Children’s Hospitals. We welcome women who live within and outside of North Oaks to join as members or help as volunteers.
Last year, their rummage sale raised a record $296,000 for Children’s Hospital Association through the hard work of a small army of 100-plus members and volunteers. A sale of this magnitude takes more than 12 months of planning along with sourcing sale items. Ways to volunteer include the drop-off at
the North Oaks West Rec Center, plus many behind-the-scenes opportunities to help. Members collect items from gift shops and estate sales throughout the year. They also help arrange the logistics for the mid-September sale at the Shoreview Ice Arena and help set up the sale. Some of our best members are those that volunteered with the sale in the past. Join us as a volunteer. More information will be provided in April for the North Oaks drop-off and in August for the rummage sale.
The Guild shares a passion to make a difference and began in 1967, with our first rummage sale in 1999. Children’s Hospital Association began with supporting a “bed fund” to help pay the cost of care, which was
$2.50 per day. Today, Children’s Hospital Association is composed of seven guilds throughout the Twin Cities who raise funds to support programs and services not typically covered in the hospital’s annual budget. North Oaks Guild II, the largest financial contributor among the guilds, helps make a difference in the lives of the whole child and their family. The 26th annual rummage sale is scheduled for Sept. 12-13 at Shoreview Ice Arena.

Mike was elected Mayor of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota in 2022. His career was in operational and marketing management roles spanning diverse industries. After 8 years at a neighborhood social service agency, Mike retired to focus on volunteerism and policy. The lessons of a lifetime clarified that progress toward a more just society requires systemic change. As Mayor he has taken the lead in making city practices and processes more equitable, responsive, and transparent. As a lifelong advocate for safe affordable housing, he has championed change that is producing more affordable housing in his city. He is also active in homelessness prevention and rehousing in Ramsey County.
Erik Goebel is a local small business owner with a background in science and entrepreneurship. He is passionate about practical problem-solving and strengthening the local economy through innovation, responsible budgeting, and community building. Big Wood Brewery pours community, craft and consistency

In a state now home to nearly 200 craft breweries, Big Wood Brewery has something many others don’t: time.
Licensed as Minnesota’s 19th craft brewery, the company has spent more than a decade watching trends rise and fall while sticking to its own brewing philosophy – make good beer, make it well, and give people a place they want to return to.
“We’ve been around a long time and seen a lot of these trends come and go,” said owner, Jason Medvec. “Milkshake IPAs, brut IPAs – they get big for a while and then they go away. We just don’t
follow that. We make beers modeled after styles that have been around for hundreds of years.”
The Vadnais Heights brewery, tucked just off the freeway but removed from the bustle of nearby retail corridors, aims to offer something closer to an escape than a quick stop.
“When you come around the bend, you feel like you’re out in the middle of nowhere,” he said. “We’re half a mile from Target and Walmart, but when people get here, we want them to feel like they’ve stepped away from everything for a bit.”
Built on consistency
Big Wood Brewery opened in 2009 and has built its reputation
around consistency and ingredient quality.
“The things that have stayed constant are our commitment to quality,” Medvec said. “We don’t cost engineer our beers. We use the best ingredients all the time and we never skimp.”
That philosophy extends beyond brewing. The brewery describes its mission in three words: quality, community and fun – values Medvec says guide both the beer and the experience visitors have when they walk in.
“We sell two things,” he said. “Great beer and a great experience.” Over the years, that focus on quality has helped Big Wood maintain a steady presence in Minnesota’s rapidly expanding
craft beer scene. When the brewery opened in ‘09, fewer than two dozen craft breweries operated in the state. Today, there are roughly 200. For Jason, that growth makes consistency even more important.
“In a crowded market, the thing that matters most is whether the beer in the glass is good,” he said. “If people trust that every time they come here they’re going to get something well made, they’ll keep coming back.”
A first pour for newcomers
Ask a brewer to pick a favorite beer and the answer is rarely simple. “It’s hard to pick your favorite child,” Medvec joked. “They’re all my babies.”
Still, for first-time visitors looking to understand what Big Wood is about, he often recommends Jack Savage, an American pale ale the brewery has been making for nearly 16 years. “It’s one of our biggest sellers out in the market and one of our most wellknown beers,” he said.
Another staple is Cabin Daze, a hazy IPA that has become a recognizable name among Big Wood’s lineup.
The brewery also produces several German-style beers that Medvec describes as “very true to style and very easy drinking,” reflecting the brewery’s preference for classic, established brewing traditions.
Some of Big Wood’s beers also reach customers beyond the taproom, as the brewery distributes to bars and restaurants across the region.
Creating a new beer doesn’t begin in the brewhouse. Instead, it begins with an idea.
“When we brew a new beer, it really starts on paper,” Medvec said. “You decide what style you want to brew, what color you want it to be, what flavor profile you’re looking for – even how much carbonation you want.”
Years of experience allow brewers to anticipate how ingredients will translate to the finished beer.
“You can kind of look at a recipe and taste what it’s going to be like just from reading the ingredient list,” he said.
One example is Irish Goodbye, an Irish-style stout the brewery plans to release again around St. Patrick’s Day.
Before any new beer reaches store shelves or restaurant taps, it must pass the brewery’s most important test: the taproom.
“Our litmus test is the taproom,” Medvec said. “All of our beers start there. If people really like them and they rise to the top, then we think about distributing them.”
That process sometimes requires patience – and adjustments.
“You don’t always hit the mark on the first batch,” he said. “It’s like making chocolate chip cookies. You might have to make them a few times before you perfect them.”
A brand built on storytelling
Even the brewery’s beer names and packaging are intentional.
Before entering the brewing industry, Medvec owned an advertising agency, and that background continues to shape Big Wood’s branding.
“If you look at our cans on the shelf, they’re consistent,” he said. “The logo is in the same place, the
beer name is in the same place. We’ve always made a conscious effort to keep the brand consistent.”
That consistency – from the visual identity to the names of beers like Cabin Daze and Wicked Ex – helps the brewery stand out on crowded shelves.
More than just beer
While the beer draws people in, the brewery’s event calendar helps keep the space active year-round.
“We focus a lot on events,” Medvec said. “It’s a really important driver for us.”
The brewery hosts live music, seasonal Fish Fry Fridays, holiday markets and specialty events. Those gatherings often bring together a mix of regulars, newcomers and neighbors from across the Shoreview, North Oaks and Vadnais Heights area. On busy nights, the taproom and outdoor space can feel less like a brewery and more like a community gathering place, with live music drifting across the patio while visitors sample new releases or revisit longtime favorites. A summer outdoor concert series and the annual Big Woodstock music event bring crowds to the property each year.
There’s also a personal element to the music programming.
“I’ve been a musician my whole life,” Medvec said. “So, we support the live arts and live music as much as we can.”
Rooted in the community
Over its 17-year history, Big Wood Brewery has also built a reputation for supporting causes across Minnesota.
The brewery has partnered with organizations supporting first responders, veterans, youth programs and health charities, including leukemia research efforts.
“You can’t support everything,” Medvec said. “You have to choose what matters to you and your employees. But we’ve always tried to give back where we can.”
Sue Denkinger has served on the council since January 2016 and has been mayor since January 2023. Sue has lived in Shoreview for over 35 years and her two daughters attended Mounds View schools. Prior to serving on the city council, she was on the economic development commission, Ramsey County League of Local Governments (both as a board member and president), and the Lake Johanna Fire Department (LJFD) Board of Directors. Sue currently serves on the economic development authority and the LJFD Headquarters Board, which oversees the new headquarters construction. Her career at Thomson Reuters spanned 40 years in leadership positions ranging from manufacturing to deployment executive.
Paul Gardner has served on the council since January 2025. He and his wife, Michelle, have lived in Shoreview since 1997 and their two children graduated from the Mounds View School District. Gardner retired from the State of Minnesota in 2025 after leading the Minnesota Clean Water Council for six years. He has two decades of experience in the recycling and solid waste sector, and served as a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2007 to 2010. He is especially interested in climate solutions for cities.
John Doan has served on the council since April 2022. He is also the president of the Ramsey County League of Local Governments. Prior to serving on the city council, he was on the planning commission and served on the Metropolitan Council. His public service includes chairing the State Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans, serving on the Minnesota Board on Aging, and as a U.S. Navy Civil Engineer Corp officer. A licensed professional engineer, John works as a transportation consultant. Across his career and civic life, he is dedicated to building sustainable, thriving communities through innovative leadership, strategic planning, and collaborative problem solving.
Shelly Myrland has served on the council since February 2023. She has lived in Shoreview for over 20 years. Prior to serving on the city council, she was on the economic development commission and economic development authority. She is also on the Northeast Youth and Family Services Board and a former Rotarian. Councilmember Myrland has had a long-time career in banking. She is currently SVP-Senior Commercial Banker at F&M Bank in Vadnais Heights and Lino Lakes. She likes many outdoor activities, spending time with family and friends, and volunteering for several organizations.
Cory Springhorn has served on the council since January 2015. He has lived in Shoreview since 2001 and his three children graduated from Mounds View High School. He currently serves on the Shoreview Economic Development Authority, Lake Johanna Fire Department (LJFD) Board of Directors, LJFD Headquarters Board, LJFD Relief Association Board of Trustees, and League of MN Cities Human Resources and Data Practices Policy Committee. Councilmember Springhorn is currently the human resources director for a home care and hospice provider. He enjoys playing trumpet for a variety of groups including the Shoreview Northern Lights Variety Band, reading, running, and learning new languages.

Arden Hills–Shoreview Rotary Club provides opportunity to give back
A great way to meet new people and get involved in the community is through volunteer work. The Arden Hills–Shoreview Rotary Club offers Shoreview residents a meaningful opportunity to give back to the community they call home.
The Arden Hills- Shoreview Rotary Club is one of some 30,000 clubs worldwide, and is an active, enthusiastic group that works on local and international projects with a primary emphasis on projects benefitting youth.
The Rotary participates in various events throughout Shoreview during the year. In the Spring, the club puts on the Taste of Shoreview. The event features food, wine and beer samples from local restaurants and caterers. Proceeds from the Taste of Shoreview support the
Slice of Shoreview. In the summer, the Rotary help out at the Slice of Shoreview and hosts a bungo fundraiser.
The Rotary Club was also responsible for the city’s first pollinator garden and rain garden. The garden, a cooperative effort between the Rotary, Shoreview Parks and Recreation and Public Works Department and the Rice Creek Watershed District, can be found at McCullough Park. The 2,000-sqaure foot garden was placed in the city to help meet Rotary International’s goals of supporting environment through its Operation Pollination initiative. They also provide four scholarships for one junior and three senior students from Mounds View High School to attend Camp Enterprise, a threeday camp designed to introduce
high school juniors and seniors to entrepreneurship and ethical businesses practices. Recently, Rotary Member Glenn Bowers was named district governor for Rotary District 5960. Bowers has been a member of the Arden Hills-Shoreview Rotary Club since 2016. Local clubs included within the District 5960 are Arden Hills-Shoreview, White Bear Lake, New Brighton/Mounds View, the Chain of Lakes Rotary and Blaine/Ham Lake.

Overview:
VLAWMO was established in 1983 to manage the Vadnais Lake area watershed, which includes parts of Vadnais Heights and all of North Oaks. Vadnais Lake is used as the final water storage reservoir for the drinking water supply system operated by the St. Paul Regional Water Service. Oversight includes protection of surface water quality, flood control and storm water management, wetland and groundwater protection. A water-related reference library is maintained at the VLAWMO office.
Governance:
Six-member board of directors from each of the communities served, which pay a share of the annual operating budget. Service fees are charged to developers, and grants have been secured for several watershed projects. The commission meets the second Wednesday of each month at 8:15 a.m. at Vadnais Heights City Hall. Shoreview, North Oaks and Vadnais Heights lie within the 170 squaremiles of Ramsey County. Although it is the smallest geographically of Minnesota’s counties, it is the most densely populated. Recent population figures show more than a half-million residents call the county home. The county is run by a seven-member board of commissioners that determines county policy and decides how money should be spent. The board meets the first four Tuesdays of each month at 9 a.m. in the Council Chambers, Third Floor, Ramsey County Courthouse, 15 W. Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul. A professional county manager, hired by the board of commissioners, oversees the daily operation of the county. The county employs more than 2,600 workers in programs that serve its residents. OVERVIEW:
The White Bear Lake Area School District serves all or parts of Birchwood, Gem Lake, Hugo, Lino Lakes, Little Canada, Maplewood, North Oaks, Vadnais Heights, White Bear Lake and White Bear Township. The District has nine elementary schools (K-5), two middle schools (6-8), a high school (9-12), and an Area Learning Center.
