LINO LAKES—A discussion on the 2018 street reconstruction project ended with a resident walking out of the Council Chambers mid conversation at the Aug. 14 meeting. The item on the agenda, which the council approved, was to authorize the plans and specifications for the reconstruction projects in the West Shadow Lake and LaMotte neighborhoods. WSB & Associates submitted a proposal to provide preparation of plans and specifications in the amount of $506,220. The proposal includes preliminary design services, final design services, right of way/ easement acquisition services and public involvement and communication. The City Council authorized the preparation of a feasibility report on the projects Jan. 9, which was presented to the council at a May work session. The council then held a public hearing, adopted a resolution approving the fiveyear reconstruction plan (2017–2021) and authorized the issuance of $5,124,000 in general obligation bonds at its meeting on June 17. Resident Mike Trehus, who lives on Shadow Court, visited the council at its May work session to express concerns he had in particular with the West Shadow project. He returned to the August meeting to ask City Engineer Diane Hankee specific design questions. “This is something that is 28 years in the making,” Mayor Jeff Reinert said. “I think

More than Pink: 'Be strong. Be bold. Be smart.' BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR

Middle school can be a tough time for many youth, especially girls. A new program this year aims to make that transition a bit easier while inspiring girls to be comfortable in their own skin. Centennial Community Education offered the More than Pink program from June 20 through Aug. 9, and a total of 32 girls who are entering grades 5–6 participated. The program is designed to inspire girls to stay true to them-

selves and live free from societal stereotypes, through lessons that empower girls to celebrate their bodies, honor and embrace their personalities, all while training to run a 5K. “We want them to 'Be strong. Be bold. Be smart',” Community Education Director Cori Sendle said of the program’s tagline. “It is a self-confidence, be happy in your own skin, you are you and you are special. The idea with the 5K is doing something they have never done before. Starting from nothing and building up to the run allows

them to have this big accomplishment at the end.” The program covered many topics including friendship, bullying, healthy relationships, nutrition, respect, budgeting, safety and fitness. For nearly every topic, guest speakers gave presentations and completed interactive activities with the girls. Some of the guest speakers included Affinity Credit Union, Alexandra House, Miss Lino Lakes Ambassadors, YMCA, Lino Lakes Police Department and SEE MORE THAN PINK, PAGE 11
