CMS implements midday experience this fall BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
Centennial Middle School (CMS) is hoping to make a big difference in the lives of students, staff, parents and community members by implementing new programming this fall. The Directed Studies/Digital Skills program will consist of a 30-minute block in the middle of the day, either before or after lunch, that will be set aside for directed studies for three quarters and digital skills for one quarter. “The purpose is to provide a time during the student day to make sure they have a way to bring their stress levels down through a consistent way to get the support they need individually,” said CMS Principal Bob Stevens. “It is my goal to make sure we are providing high-quality learning experiences for students and that we also find ways to assist in making that meaningful and manageable for everyone involved.” Planning for the midday experience began after middle school staff held continued discussions with staff at the high school about its Lunch Energize Achieve Participate (LEAP) program, which was implemented during the 2016-17 school year. “We had talks of starting a similar program that would be age-appropriate for sixth- through eighth-graders because there are different needs at the different levels,” Stevens said. “Over the last year we had professional development opportunities for staff to come together by grade level to dive deep into what students needed, what that would look like for adults so they could be successful in helping students.” The directed studies daily block will be dedicated to a specific activity, such as an open study hall where students can make up tests, work on homework or get assistance from teachers. The time may also be used to work on group projects or complete occupational or speech assessments. “Some of our students leave the house at 6 a.m. and aren't getting

Lino Lakes local competes on television BY JULIA ARNOLD CONTRIBUTING WRITER
The fast-paced, action-packed ninja warrior workout craze isn't going away anytime soon. Judging from the numerous television shows devoted to the ninja-style obstacle competitions, they are only gaining in popularity. “Ultimate Beastmaster,” an original Netflix series in its second season, features Minnesotan ninja
warrior Kyle Soderman. Though he's currently a national ninja competitor, locals may know him best as the baby pictured on the side of the familiar Rock Gardens delivery truck that his family owns. But he's all grown up now.
Taming the beast Season two of “Ultimate Beastmaster” was filmed in Los Angeles last November and will air in August, though exact dates are still
to be determined. The Netflix reality show is the brainchild of Dave Broome, the creator and executive producer of “The Biggest Loser,” and actor and producer Sylvester Stallone. According to the series' website, “Competitors from around the world give everything they’ve got in a thrilling crusade to conquer the most jaw-dropping spectacle of a modern monster.” Contestants
