BLAINE — When it is all said and done, one local airport will have spent around two years planning for one of the largest events the Twin Cities area has ever seen––the Super Bowl. US Bank Stadium is scheduled to host the Super Bowl on Feb. 4 next year. Last March, the Anoka County-Blaine Airport (Janes Field), along with three other Twin Cities area airports, starting planning to make sure their role in the event goes without a hitch. Joe Harris, manager of Anoka County-Blaine Airport and St. Paul Downtown Airport (Holman Field) said four airports will be vital for the big game. They include Anoka County-Blaine, St. Paul Downtown, Flying Cloud in Eden Prairie and Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP). These airports are going to be essential, as they all have runway lengths of greater than 5,000 feet. That length is needed to accommodate the type of traffic that is expected — business jets. In addition, each of the airports also has first-class services that will be able to meet the needs of the customers. “Anoka County-Blaine is a great airport. We have a number of business jet operations that operate annually. It is going to be an attractive alternative for guests because you have a good business partner and also the location of the airport to the stadium itself is relatively comparable to other MAC (Metropolitan Airports Commission) airports,” Harris explained. Is the gun range the new yoga? BY JULIA ARNOLD CONTRIBUTING WRITER
When most people think of a gun shop, they picture camouflage, hunting gear and men. Bill's Gun Shop and Range in Circle Pines is looking to change that presumption, and holds Ladies Night every Wednesday. The employees want to empower women in a relaxed, judgment-free environment. Female-focused instruction Lino Lakes resident Kelsi Smith takes pride in helping women gain confidence at the range. As a Bill's Gun Shop and Range instructor, Smith has a special interest in empowering women. When women
fi rst come in, “I show them the safety precautions, teach them how to hold the gun and their stance, and then we start shooting,” Smith explained. “I love doing this. I get to see their confidence grow.” Smith started coming to the range as a customer and quickly became an instructor. She said, “What got me interested was the unknown. I think a lot of women want their ‘conceal and carry’ and want to learn more about guns.” But she knows fi rsthand that it can be intimidating. “I came from knowing absolutely nothing too.” Women often open up to Smith about their reasons SEE BILL’S GUNS PAGE 11
