FOREST LAKE – A fun game with a strange name, proponents of pickleball in Forest Lake have a new reason to rejoice with the addition of seven new outdoor courts at Fenway Field. “Pickleball's one of the fastest growing recreational sports,” said Forest Lake Parks and Recreation Coordinator Jamie Muscha. “It's great because it's something that is for all age groups. Youth enjoy playing it, and it's really
popular among the senior population as well.” The game is similar to tennis, but uses a whiffle ball and small, hard paddles. The courts also have smaller dimensions, which has posed a challenge to many communities that have pickleball players. Many cities paint pickleball court lines on top of already existing tennis courts, but the increase in the number of lines can be a bit confusing to players. That's why it's so exciting Forest Lake now has seven courts exclusively for pickleball, Muscha said. Until recent-
ly, many locals traveled to neighboring communities such as Shoreview to play. “Now they're kind of able to have home court advantage, and stay in Forest Lake,” Muscha said. “And it's also drawing more people into the community to play here as well.” The courts were built on a concrete slab that was installed in 2007, originally intended to be a hockey arena. In December 2016, the Parks, Trails and Lakes Commission was trying to find a SEE PICKLEBALL COURTS, PAGE 14
Square Lake Film Festival shoots for the moon in its 15th year BY JACKIE BUSSJAEGER EDITOR
MAY TOWNSHIP — It has been 15 years since St. Croix Valley resident Paul Creager started the first film festival on his family’s farm, but since then the Square Lake Film and Music Festival has made a big name for itself. “(It’s) a milestone for us; nobody knows the future,” Creager said. “We’re happy to (make it to) this year.” The festival will take place Saturday, Aug. 5 at the secluded farm at 13363 Partridge Road N., Stillwater. Headliners at this year’s event include Twin Cities notables ZULUZULUU, Gramma’s Boyfriend and Roma di Luna. One of
the highlights of the night is a combination of film and live score, this year provided by Afro-funk band ZULUZULUU. The band will accompany the 1902 silent film “Le Voyage dans la Lune” (“A Trip to the Moon”), which many consider to be the first sci-fi film. Creager explained that it is a special treat to have folk rock band Roma di Luna playing at the festival, since the band split up and only recently reunited. “So that will be a special element,” Creager said. “It’s kind of a luna theme with the poster you see and the movie (“Le Voyage dans la Lune”) and Roma di Luna. It’s just a coincidence, but it came together that way.” SEE FILM AND MUSIC FESTIVAL, PAGE 14
