Monthly Recipe
Flapjack apple crumble

Since school, apple crumble has been a go-to in Nadiya's house, with the addition of a few spices and the omission of powdered custard.
Ingredients
For the flapjack crumble • 250g/9oz porridge oats • 2 tsp lemon zest • 125g/4½oz unsalted butter • 100g/3½oz muscovado sugar • 100g/3½oz golden syrup For the apples • 1kg/2lb 4oz Granny Smith or cooking apples, peeled, cored and cut into chunks • 40g/1½ oz unsalted butter • 1 tsp cinnamon • 1–2 tbsp muscovado sugar • 1 lemon, juice only • 1 tbsp cornflour • 150g/5½oz raisins For the vanilla custard • 600ml/1 pint whole milk • 1 tbsp vanilla extract • 4 free-range egg yolks (roughly 80g/3oz) • 20g/¾oz caster sugar • 2 tsp cornflour
Method
pan. Cook for about 10 minutes on a medium heat, until the apples have softened slightly. Stir in the cornflour and raisins, then tip the mixture into a 25cm/10in square or round ovenproof baking dish. Top with the flapjack mix in an even layer. Bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 40–45 minutes.
Step Five. Meanwhile, for the custard put the milk and vanilla into a pan and bring to the boil, then turn down to a gentle simmer. Put the egg yolks, sugar and cornflour into a bowl and whisk until the mixture is light. Slowly add the warm milk in a steady stream, whisking all the time. Once all the milk is added, pour it back into the pan over a medium heat and stir gently with a spoon till the mixture thickens.

A people’s emergency briefing comes to Whitby

Last month I attended a screening of The People’s Emergency Briefing at the Coliseum in Whitby – an event which left me with plenty to think about, and a strong feeling that more people should have the opportunity to see the film. The 50-minute film brings together leading scientists and experts to explain the evidence behind the climate and nature emergency and, importantly, what it could mean for ordinary people. It looks beyond the familiar headlines about climate change, exploring issues such as extreme weather, food security, health, the economy and the cost of living.
It is not an especially comfortable film to watch. During the question-and-answer session and the discussion that followed, a succession of concerns were raised. People spoke about the future, the pressures already being felt by communities and the uncertainty about what lies ahead. There was genuine fear and, at times, a sense that the scale of the problems can be overwhelming.

For example, rather than expecting everyone to travel into Whitby, why not hold screenings in parish halls and community centres in the villages and communities around the town – both along the coast and across the moors? These are places where people already meet, and where a film followed by an open discussion could provide an opportunity for local people to consider what the issues mean for their own communities.
The People’s Emergency Briefing is not a film that will provide all the answers. But perhaps that is precisely why it is worth showing. It starts conversations, raises difficult questions But there was another emotion in the room too and, importantly, offers some hope. – hope. If more communities around Whitby were given For me, one of the film's greatest strengths was that it did not simply leave the audience with a catalogue of frightening predictions. Alongside the warnings, it demonstrated that action is possible and that communities, businesses, politicians and individuals all have a part to play. The message was not simply that we should be frightened by what might happen, but that we should understand the risks and then decide what we can do about them. That is why I believe the film deserves to be seen much more widely.

Whitby Gathers
Common Cause is the not-for-profit Community Interest Company that runs The Dispensary Health Shop & Hub on Skinner Street in Whitby and facilitates community use of the Reading Room in Goathland. They were delighted to support Whitby Gathers during August. Whitby Gathers was a free three week arts programme taking place across Whitby and surrounding villages. Several workshops took place at The Reading Room in Goathland, including very popular loom weaving, banner-making, fabric bee creation and poetry & visual art workshops. Thanks to the brilliant facilitators; Anna at Nurturing Rituals, Penny, Rose, Yana and Liz! It was a great way to bring local residents, artists and facilitators together, with the wider programme including workshops, performances and creative gatherings in music, circus skills, storytelling, writing and visual arts. Common Cause hopes to facilitate more workshops in the future and has plans for regular loom- weaving workshops. Young people in Whitby are being invited to discover a world of adventure, friendship and opportunity when 740 (Whitby) Squadron Air Cadets holds an Open Evening.
The event takes place on Thursday, September 17, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, at the rear of Whitby School, Airy Hill, Whitby, YO21 1QA and is an opportunity for prospective cadets and their parents or guardians to meet members of the squadron, find out more about what is on offer and see first-hand what life as an Air Cadet is all about. Young people can join from 12 years old and Year 8, and the range of activities available is extensive. Flying and gliding, target shooting, committee which helps with fundraising, radio communications, fieldcraft, adventure governance, cadet welfare and community training, sport, camps and STEM activities are outreach. Poetry Bookshelf My Dadʼs Hands and Other Stories By Anita P Hyde.
My Dadʼs Hands and Other Stories is a collection of poems and short stories by Whitby writer Patricia Camm, who writes under the name Anita P Hyde. Drawing on memories, observations and experiences gathered throughout her life, Patriciaʼs writing takes the reader from childhood memories of Yorkshire and family life to reflections on nature, love, loss, ageing and the passing of time. The collection includes poetry, prose and short stories, with subjects as varied as a much-loved fatherʼs hands, childhood Christmases, a mischievous cat, a faithful dog, Morris dancing, wildlife, family relationships and the small characters encountered in everyday life. There are moments of humour alongside pieces that are poignant and thought-provoking.
Patricia has lived in Whitby for 11 years and now lives in Ruswarp with her husband and granddaughter Beth. She has been writing for most of her adult life and studied Creative Writing as part of a BA at Scarborough University in 2012. She has previously contributed to three local books, but this is the first time she has brought her own work together in one collection. The book is particularly local in its creation. It has been beautifully illustrated by her granddaughter Beth, an artist in her own right, and published by Whitby Press Publishing. My Dadʼs Hands and Other Stories is available from St Maryʼs Church, Abbey Plain, where Patricia works, for £10 with proceeds going towards urgent repairs to the church. Time to pick, plant and prepare!
With its shortening days September is a busy month for gardeners as it marks the transition into autumn. September is the last month of summer and gardeners should expect hot sunny weather to ripen fruits, but there are often good amounts of rain that will rejuvenate lawns. Looking to the future bulbs need planting and preparations need to be made for autumn. Lawns
August can take its toll on lawns, and many gardeners reduce cutting frequency and blade height to help grass survive. But September will offer a welcome reprieve and after a couple of downpours lawns should look lush. Apply low nitrogen, high potassium fertiliser to help it get through winter, consider aerating and scarifying, before scattering seed on any bare patches. Keep grass around 3 to 5cm high to allow it to absorb the maximum amount of sunshine. Harvest
September is the month when there is something of a harvest crossover as late summer fruit and veg meet the early autumn crops. Potatoes should be still good to pick, as should runner beans, beetroot and sweetcorn, whilst there should still be some succulent plums and the last of the summer raspberries to pick. The early apples and pears, and blackberries are ripening in the warm sunshine, and some should be good enough to pick. Plant
You can also continue sowing autumn planting onion and garlic sets and winter salad greens like mustard leaf and spinach for plentiful salad crops.
