Autumn arrives in Whitby
And so October arrives, bringing cooler days, longer shadows and that unmistakable feeling that autumn has finally arrived.
There is something rather special about this time of year in Whitby. The summer crowds have eased, the leaves are beginning to turn and, when the sun does make an appearance, the softer autumn light can make the town and coastline look quite magical. Of course, there will be the inevitable sea breezes and rainy days too — but somehow, they seem to suit Whitby rather well. October is also a month when the town embraces its darker side. Whitby Goth Weekend returns at the end of the month, bringing thousands of visitors, live music, alternative fashion and the wonderfully theatrical spectacle that has become such a familiar part of Whitby life. For one weekend, black lace, Victorian attire, steampunk creations and an extraordinary array of characters fill the streets, reminding us once again that Whitby does individuality rather well.

New for this year is The Big Whitby Quiz. Over 270 businesses have been invited to submit roughly three questions about their business, its history, its premises. Any business that hasn't yet sent in their questions, please do so ASAP. Simply visit www.whitbychocfest.org.uk, tap the menu, look for "Info for Businesses", fill out the application form, register your business, send us your questions, answers. The closing date is 11th October. This is also the place to tell us if you wish to enter any of the four competitions. The Big Whitby Quiz runs from 9th to 15th November, hosted by over 12 existing quiz venues around the local area. Our events page will give the public details for each individual quiz. Quizzes will run as normal, but all the questions will be about Whitby and its businesses. Prizes will be hampers donated by those Whitby businesses. What better way to learn something new about what's on our doorstep.

Monthly Recipe
Butternut squash soup
This easy butternut squash soup recipe is flavoured with red pepper and ginger and then blended until silky smooth. Roasting the squash, rather than boiling it in a pan, really brings out the flavour in the vegetables to make a richtasting soup without any added dairy.
Timings & Servings
Preparation: 15‒20 minutes Cooking time: 50‒60 minutes Serves: 4
Ingredients
• 1.5kg/3lb 5oz peeled and deseeded butternut squash, cut into 3cm/1¼in cubes (see tip) • 1 large onion, roughly chopped • 2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped • 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into cubes • 4 tbsp olive oil • 1 tbsp clear honey (optional) • 5cm/2in piece fresh root ginger, peeled and chopped • 1.5 litres/2½ pints vegetable stock • salt and freshly ground black pepper
large roasting tin and spread out to form a single layer. Taking a little care to spread the vegetables evenly will help them roast and brown rather than steam.
Step Two: Tip the prepared squash into a large bowl or resealable freezer bag. Add the onion, carrots, red pepper and half the oil. Season with salt and pepper and toss everything together until the vegetables are evenly coated. Tip into a
smooth. Return to the heat to warm through and serve hot with crusty bread. For the best texture, blend thoroughly until the soup is creamy and evenly combined, then serve straight away while hot.
Step Three: Roast in the oven for 40‒45 minutes, or until tender and tinged brown at the edges. Drizzle over the honey, if using, 5 minutes before the end of cooking. The roasting brings out the natural sweetness of the vegetables while adding some lovely colour around the edges.
Step Four: Place a large, deep-sided saucepan over a medium heat. Add the remaining oil and, when it is hot, add the ginger and fry for a Method minute. Nature’s Laboratory Opens Its Doors to the Community Nature’s Laboratory welcomed local residents and visitors to its Whitby premises for a special Open Day on Saturday 5th September, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the work of this local natural health business. Throughout the day, visitors had the opportunity to take part in a range of hands-on activities. Both the Sweet Cecily’s lip balm-making workshops and the herbal tea tasting and tea making workshops proved very popular. Visitors enjoyed learning about the ingredients used to make lip balms before having a go at making their own, while the herbal tea workshops offered the chance to taste different teas, discover a variety of herbs and experiment with creating individual herbal tea blends.
3 Factory tours offered a glimpse behind the scenes at Nature’s Laboratory and an opportunity to learn more about how its natural health and skincare products are made here in Whitby. Refreshments were available throughout the day, giving visitors the chance to meet the team, ask questions and find out more about their work. James Fearnley, founder of Nature’s Laboratory and a long-standing propolis researcher, also gave a talk, sharing some of the knowledge and experience gained through his many years of work with natural medicines. Following the enthusiastic response to the workshops, Nature’s Laboratory hopes to offer more workshops in the future, giving people the opportunity to learn more about herbs and natural products while developing practical, hands-on skills.

Whitby market returns home to historic marketplace W
hitby market traders are once again trading in the town’s historic marketplace following the completion of the major restoration of the Grade II listed Old Town Hall.
Visitors can now enjoy browsing the market beneath the landmark arches of the Old Town Hall, surrounded by the character and heritage of Whitby’s Old Town. Whether you're looking for fresh local produce, handmade gifts, artisan goods or seaside-inspired finds, Whitby market offers a welcoming and unique shopping experience.
After temporarily relocating to Dock End during the renovation works, traders have returned to the heart of Whitby, bringing fresh produce, unique crafts and local treasures back to one of the town’s most iconic locations. The £1.3 million restoration project has transformed the marketplace, safeguarding the historic Old Town Hall for future generations while creating an attractive setting for residents and visitors to enjoy. The building officially reopened on 25 August, with traders, councillors, local businesses and stakeholders gathering to celebrate its revival.

David Bradley has lived in North Yorkshire for more than thirty years and has become well known locally for his contribution to the arts. Whitby’s pioneering female skipper brought to life on stage

The extraordinary life of Whitby’s Dora Walker, the first woman to skipper a North Sea fishing vessel, is to be brought to life in a new ballad drama by Whitby-based Dogwood Productions, working with the RNLI. The production forms part of the RNLI’s Stories of Courage 1939–1945 initiative, made possible by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and will explore the remarkable courage shown by lifeboat crews during the Second World War. During the war, Dora steered fishing vessels through mined waters, armed with a pistol, and was involved in Whitby lifeboat rescue efforts following the wreck of the SS Charles off Saltwick in February 1940. Her diaries and book record the crew’s repeated attempts to reach the Belgian steamer’s survivors. Several lifeboatmen were injured, while Christopher Wale and John Dryden became the RNLI’s first crew fatalities of the Second World War. Six members of the Charles’ crew also lost their lives and are buried in Whitby Cemetery.
The scale of the RNLI’s wartime service is striking. Between 1939 and 1945, its crews launched 3,760 times and saved 6,376 lives, navigating minefields, rescuing downed pilots from both sides and helping with the Dunkirk evacuation.
Today, the RNLI’s volunteer crews provide a 24hour search and rescue service around the UK and Republic of Ireland coasts. Independent of government and the Coastguard, the charity relies on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its lifesaving work. Since it was founded in 1824, its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved more than 146,700 lives.

Most people know roughly what their house is worth and probably have a good idea of the value of their car. But what about everything else? From jewellery and watches to bicycles, tools and collectables, many households are sitting on thousands of pounds' worth of possessions without fully realising it. The month of harvest and preparation
October in the UK is the harvest month; it is also about winter garden preparation and planting for spring.
Whilst the garden will look lovely this month, and there is plenty of maintenance to do, as the days grow shorter, and the rain a little more persistent, thoughts must turn to protecting the garden from the first frosts and colder weather and looking to the future and next spring. Flower garden
October is a month when many blooms are still looking beautiful, especially if the first frost has not arrived. Magnificent Japanese Anamone’s will provide structure, height and glorious flowers late into the year, as should the myriads of fuchsias. Hardy varieties such as Tom Thumb and Lady Thumb are dwarf varieties that grow no bigger than 30 -45 cm but flower non-stop until the first frosts. When they do start to die down, mulch around the base with compost or bark and leave the plants alone as they will come again next year. Protect any tender plants like dahlias by digging up the tubers and store in a frost free, dry spot to replant again next year. Continue to plant spring bulbs like hyacinths, daffodils, tulips and crocuses for a fantastic show next spring. Fruit and vegetable plot

Apples, cherries, plums, and pears all come as bare-root trees which are often cheap to buy because they are young, dormant trees specially grown in fields and dug up without any soil on their roots making them very quick to become established once planted. ‘Discovery’ is a popular variety of apple to plant this way, ‘Victoria’ a classic heavy cropping and delicious plum, and ‘Morello’ a perfect cherry if you have north facing walls or shade. Protecting & Tidying
As the year continues onward, protecting and tidying become more important. All tender or exotic plants need to be moved into a greenhouse, conservatory, or frost-free shed before the first frost hits. And make sure you don’t forget to make sure the greenhouse, or any cold frames are winter ready. Autumn gales can severely damage any climbing plants like roses so lightly trim them to prevent "wind-rock" damage. Continue to regularly rake up fallen leaves from your lawn so they don't block out light and aerate the soil if it's prone to waterlogging. If you do have somewhere that is prone to waterlogging, lift your container plants onto "pot feet", bricks or stones to prevent them from sitting in cold, waterlogged soil all winter.
They might seem like a nuisance, but you can make the most of your fallen leaves by making it into a nutritious mulch. Simply gather up the leaves and pack them into black bin bags with a few holes poked in the sides. Then, leave them in a quiet corner of your garden for anything up to a year and it will create a highly nutritious mulch for your garden.
