Your Whitby Advertiser
Finding momentum in February
For me, February represents a steadying point in the year for businesses. The rush of Christmas and New Year has passed, stocktaking is complete, and essential maintenance and annual checks are done. Behind the scenes, many local businesses use February as a time for planning and refinement — setting the tone for the months ahead. Advertising strategies are sharpened, spring campaigns begin to take shape, and new ideas are quietly developing.
Winter is firmly established and making its presence felt. Crisp mornings and shorter days continue, with coats, scarves, and warm drinks still very much part of everyday life. The colder weather naturally encourages us to slow down a little, to be more intentional about how we spend our time and where we focus our energy. It’s a season that lends itself to reflection rather than reaction. And yet, the days are already getting longer — even if we don’t always notice it. That subtle change brings a quiet sense of optimism. Brighter mornings and busier streets are on the horizon. For advertisers, this makes February the perfect moment to bridge the seasons: acknowledging winter as it is, while gently hinting at what’s to come. February also brings moments of warmth within the winter chill, with Valentine’s Day reminding us that connection still matters — whether with partners, family, or friends.

As we move through February, we encourage readers and advertisers alike to embrace this ‘inbetween time’. Use it to reflect, reset, and prepare. Winter may still have its grip on us, but momentum is building — and before long, spring will arrive, bringing busier days and increased commitments as we move towards summer.
If you’re interested in advertising your business or promoting an event in the March issue of the Whitby Advertiser, please do get in touch. I’m always happy to have a chat.

Bridging the digital divide on the East Coast Community News

North Yorkshire Libraries are proud to announce a new free IT support service for housebound adults along the East Coast, including Filey, Whitby, and surrounding villages. Funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), this initiative aims to tackle digital exclusion by bringing tailored one-to-one digital skills sessions directly into peopleʼs homes.
Building on the success of the libraryʼs existing IT Buddies volunteer programme, this new service supports individuals who cannot visit a library due to ill health, mobility issues, or caring responsibilities. Sessions are delivered by trained volunteers or library staff and are fully personalised to meet individual needs̶from learning to use a smartphone or the NHS App to accessing online activities and services.
The project runs until March 2026, with hopes to continue beyond this date. Volunteers and staff have received specialist training from Digital Unite and are already helping residents gain confidence online.

Valentine’s Day, Imbolc & the return of Gentle Love
As February arrives, shop windows fill with roses and ribbons for Valentine’s Day. Yet February also brings Imbolc, an older Celtic festival that brings us a powerful reminder that the earth is awakening and the energies of spring are stirring.

Celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of February, at the midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox, Imbolc honours the gradual return of light, new beginnings, and the awakening energy of the land. Traditionally associated with Brigid, the Celtic goddess of fire, healing and creativity, Imbolc is a time
for gentle care — tending fires, nourishing the body, and preparing for growth after winter’s rest. It is a time for slow, intentional nurturing as winter wanes and spring beckons. Imbolc reminds us that love is about kindness, warmth and also self-care.

Take a moment for yourself
At Sweet Cecily’s based here in Whitby, we hand-make all our natural skincare. We are inspired by nature, simplicity and time-honoured herbal ingredients to create nourishing natural skincare products, which are kind to you, kind to animals (we never test on animals) and kind to the environment.
As we emerge into Spring, Sweet Cecily’s is introducing a new Pamper Box, created for you to nourish your wellbeing, or gift to a loved one. Inside is a carefully chosen selection to soothe winter-weary skin and encourage rest: a nurturing Whitby Tea Company herbal tea to sip slowly, a refreshing rose water toner to gently awaken the skin, a nourishing almond and avocado face cream, and a deeply restorative sea buckthorn and frankincense night cream to support overnight renewal. A Sweet Cecily lip balm completes the box — a small but essential comfort during colder days.

Whitby Museum reopens Community News

Itʼs been a busy month and a half behind closed doors here at Whitby Museum and weʼre ready to go with six new exhibitions across our site. Thereʼs a new secure work area for our volunteer curators providing much needed space to work on our precious collections. The team have worn our cleaning cloths through with the annual deep cleaning, hoovering, dusting and polishing of our hard-to-reach areas! This work is essential to keep insects and pests at bay that might eat our artefacts and valuable documents. Taking the opportunity to open cases and clean artefacts we uncover repairs or maintenance that need to be scheduled into our plans. With around 96,000 objects in our care our closed time gives us a chance to swap in less seen items, and rest others from exposure to the light and elements that might damage them over time. We kick off February with a range of events planned. Join us for Alice in Wonderland themed button badge making in our costume gallery on February 19th. Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society - the charity that has owned and operated the museum since 1823 - will be holding its 202nd Annual General Meeting at 2pm on Sunday 22nd February, all are welcome. The society still welcomes new members and itʼs a great way to get discounted
and free access to our events and support Whitbyʼs oldest independent museum. The society hosts regular monthly talks ‒ our first of the year is ʻDelta Charlie Dronesʼ with David Creek on Wednesday 18th February at 2pm ‒find out about Davidʼs amazing images and aerial films of Whitby.

Our main exhibition for 2026 is ʻCuriouser and Curiouserʼ featuring the creepy, captivating, magical and mysterious items in our collection. The costume gallery is taking a trip down the rabbit hole with ʻAlice in Whitbyʼ ‒reinterpreting the characters of Alice in Wonderland through our costume collection. Our ceramics team has curated ʻEvery Teapot Tells a Storyʼ which presents local teapots with their local tales. Our Medals curator is bringing a poignant exhibition telling the tale of Gunner Watmore. During February and March find out about the Herring fleet in ʻFollowing the Fishʼ an exhibition from Suffolk Archives complimented by a slideshow of images of Whitby Herring fishing. Roll up for the Circus in our library with advertising posters on display from our collection.
Something for everyone ‒ and Flock Kitchen & Coffee! Come and see us in Pannett Park from the 3rd of February, Tuesday to Sunday 10am4:30pm.

Arts and events in the heart of Whitby

Whitby folk have been coming together to watch films and enjoy entertainment at the Coliseum for over 100 years.
Built as a Temperance Hall in 1887, the centre was converted into cinema use in 1911, opening as the Picturedrome. By the 1920s it had been renamed as the Coliseum and continues to be known affectionately as the ʻColi.ʼ It began to struggle for audiences in the late 20th century, opening as a cinema on some nights and as a bingo hall on others. Its chequered history included being raided by the police in the 1960s for violation of gambling laws and by 1990 the building fell into disuse and became derelict. Local charity Whitby Area Development Trust bought the building and in February 1998 began a programme of complete renovation and restoration. The £1.2m project converted the site into the townʼs arts and community centre to bring arts, entertainment, skill learning, support and advice under one roof.
Run by a registered charity with a small team of professionals and over 50 fantastic volunteers, the Coli is proud to continue its long tradition of captivating local audiences with community cinema and specialist scheduling.
The centre is delighted to host National Theatre Live with the best of British theatre on a local cinema screen. On 26th February, Helen Mirren stars as Queen Elizabeth II in the Olivier and Tony Award-winning hit production ʻThe Audienceʼ (12A) directed by Stephen Daldry.
For 60 years, Queen Elizabeth II met with each of her 12 prime ministers in a private weekly meeting. This meeting is known as The Audience. From Winston Churchill to Margaret Thatcher and David Cameron,
the Queen advised her prime ministers on matters both public and personal. Through these private audiences, we see glimpses of the woman behind the crown and witness the moments that shaped a monarch.
Art lovers will have the opportunity to view the new Exhibition on Screen ʻTurner & Constableʼ (PG) on 12th March at 7pm. Born within a year of each other, both used landscape painting to reflect the changing world around them. Critics compared their starkly different styles to a clash of ʻfire and water.ʼ

This unmissable new documentary has been made in close collaboration with Tate Britain to celebrate the 250th anniversary of their births and tells the incredible story of Britainʼs greatest landscape artists and their fierce rivalry.
And fans of Yorkshire may want to join us at the Coli on 5th March for ʻThe Choralʼ (15) Set in 1916, during World War I, in the fictional town of Ramsden, Yorkshire, the film follows the members of the local choral society which recruits a group of teenage boys and girls for a performance of Edward Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius, a work chosen because it was not written by a German. The Choral explores the humour and humanity at the heart of a community facing an uncertain future.
For the full programme and join the mailing list please contact the Coli: Tel 01947 825000 or email: info@whitbycoliseum.com

Your voice could make history for Whitby in 2026 Community News

The UK Town of Culture title transforms communities – but only when everyone speaks up. Here's why your support matters now.
Since 2009, the UK City of Culture programme has proven its power to change places forever. Hull kicked off the initiative, securing over £100 million in investment, welcoming 5.3 million visitors, and generating £220 million in economic impact. Coventry followed with similar success and Bradford has just completed its own successful year. Now, Whitby has the chance to write the next chapter – but it needs you to take action. Town of Culture 2028 expression of interest is about to be launched.
Why Whitby's Story Deserves National Recognition
Our town isn't just special to us; it's nationally significant. From Captain Cook's maritime legacy and world-renowned shipbuilding heritage to Bram Stoker's Dracula and Britain's earliest poet Caedmon, Whitby punches far above its weight culturally. Add thriving Gothic culture, exquisite Whitby jet craftsmanship, and a vibrant contemporary arts and music scene, and you have a compelling narrative that resonates far beyond Yorkshire.
With Cook 300 celebrations and the Endeavour replica visit already planned for 2028, Whitby has a ready-made international event. But here's the exciting part: instead of managing this as a standalone challenge, imagine it as the centrepiece of a fully-funded, year-long cultural celebration that benefits everyone.
What Town of Culture Brings Home
Picture major funding transforming our public spaces, cultural facilities, and infrastructure –improvements residents use daily, not just tourists. Imagine professional support managing large events properly, preventing overtourism chaos. Envision free cultural programmes in schools, community centres, and public spaces. Think youth training schemes, local employment opportunities, and support for our talented makers and artists.
The legacy extends far beyond 2028: improved year-round programming, a strengthened creative sector, better infrastructure, and genuine opportunities for young people to build careers here without leaving. It addresses real challenges – youth out-migration, seasonal tourism dependency, and housing pressures – with sustainable, community-focused solutions.
The Power of Numbers
Here's the crucial truth: government awards Town of Culture to communities that demonstrate genuine, widespread enthusiasm. Previous city winners succeeded because residents, businesses, community groups, and officials united behind their bids. Numbers matter enormously when bids are assessed
This is where you come in. In order to succeed we need the following:
Write letters of support – to the town council, the bid team, local media. Share why Whitby deserves
this recognition and what it would mean for you, your family, or your business.
Spread the word – talk to neighbours, post on social media, discuss it at community meetings. Enthusiasm is contagious, and assessors look for genuine grassroots excitement.
Show up – attend consultation events, complete surveys, engage with the bid process. Visible community participation demonstrates we're serious.
Businesses and organisations – formal letters of support from local enterprises of all professions, community groups, schools, and voluntary organisations carry significant weight.

The Opportunity Before Us
This isn't about one ship visit or one year of events. It's about transforming the Endeavour challenge into a catalyst for lasting positive change, securing investment that improves daily life for residents, and putting Whitby on the national stage in a way that benefits our community for generations. But it only happens if we show up, speak up, and demonstrate that Whitby wants this. The bid team can write the application, but only the community can prove we deserve to win.
Your voice matters. Your support counts. Let's make history together.
For more information on supporting Whitby's Town of Culture 2028 bid, or sending letters contact Clair Stones on 07899 780 647 or Captain Cook Memorial Museum, Grape Lane Whitby YO22 4BA

Touching Souls and Changing Faces
By Samwell.
Whitby-based cobbler Samwell (Sam Witty) has released his debut book, Touching Souls and Changing Faces, a deeply personal reflection on connection, empathy, and what it means to be human in the modern world.
Written between long days at work and quiet evenings by the sea, the book blends raw storytelling, philosophy, and personal experience to explore how we can communicate more openly, not just with others, but with ourselves.
“Iʼve spent years meeting people from all walks of life in my day job,” says Samwell. “You learn quickly that everyoneʼs carrying something. This book came from a place of wanting to understand that, to listen better, to see people fully, and to help others do the same.” The book has been described as a new kind of selfhelp. Samwell draws from his own journey, marked

by resilience, mental health challenges, and rediscovery, to offer readers an invitation to pause, reflect, and reconnect. It is not about perfection or success, but about presence, compassion, and rediscovering the humanity that often gets lost in daily noise.

Written with warmth and candour, the book feels like a conversation, speaking to readers who feel adrift or disconnected, offering comfort and clarity without pretence. For more information, please visit www.samwellworldwide.com
Thomas Smith Langlands: The HMHS Rohilla Rescue
This impressively produced hardback A4 book tells the story of Thomas Smith Langlands and the author David Pluesʼ family connection through his grandmother, Margaret Langlands. His objective was to collate the family archive and incorporate his research to produce a book providing a timeline of events surrounding the famous Rohilla rescue of 1914.
The bookʼs main focus is Thomas Langlands Smith, who served as crew on Upgang lifeboat from 1871 and became Coxswain in 1875. He transferred to nearby Whitby lifeboat in 1899, and
By David Plues.
remained in charge until his retirement in 1920 after 49 years of service with the RNLI. The book consists mostly of historic photographs, many showing the authorʼs relatives and members of the Langlands family. There are also some excellent historic images of Whitbyʼs lifeboats and lifeboat crews, mainly from the pulling and sailing era. There is a large section devoted to the Rohilla tragedy of 1914, with reproductions of contemporary letters, newspaper articles and old postcards.
A new updated edition of the book is available at the RNLI Shop on Pier Road at the special price of £15. For further information, contact Neil Williamson at whitby_museum@rnli.org.uk

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!
These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in.
The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:
‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’
So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
