DUOMO Among one of the most important Gothic buildings in the world, the church constructed over a period of 450 years is the symbol of Milan. To experience the Duomo at its most majestic you must ascend to the roof. 6 GALLERIA VITTORIO EMANUELE II Sometimes known as “the living-room of the Milanese”, this elegant, four-storey arcade, housing luxury cafés and famous designer shops, is covered by a glass barrel vault and a beautiful glass cupola. 5 CASTELLO SFORZESCO The ancient seat of the ruling Visconti, it was later rebuilt by Francesco Sforza and is now simply known by the Milanese as “Il Castello”. CENACOLO VINCIANO One of the most famous attractions in the world, “The Last Supper” by Leonardo da Vinci is a 15th century large mural painting representing the scene of the last supper of Jesus narrated in the Gospel. This fragile masterpiece was painted by Leonardo using a technique that was chemically imperfect and by the early 16th century it has started to flake and decay, resulting in numerous restorations. 7 PALAZZO REALE Formerly the residence of all those who governed Milan, from Napoleon to the Royal House of Savoy, the Royal Palace is currently one of the most important cultural centres in the city, hosting exhibitions of international renown. Near the Duomo, it’s the perfect place to escape the crowds of the Duomo’s square.

PIAZZA SCALA The perfect location for the new Gallerie d’Italia Art Museum and the premiere opera house Teatro alla Scala. Rising up in the center of the square is the tall monument dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci 1 3 MONTENAPOLEONE DISTRICT Milan is known as one of the shopping capitals of the world and via Montenapoleone, together with the Golden Quad, is entirely given over to luxury shopping. AMBROSIANA The Picture Gallery contains several exquisite works of art from the 15th through 17th centuries. The Biblioteca Federiciana has on show Leonardo’s Codex Atlanticus. NAVIGLI The Navigli are artificial canals built 800 years ago to ferry people and merchandise to Milan. This network was perfected in 1457 by Leonardo da Vinci. Today, the area is bursting with trendy dining and nightlife spots. SAN SIRO STADIUM With a capacity of 80,000 seats, Milan football stadium is the largest stadium in Italy and the fourth in Europe. SANT’AMBROGIO - One of the most ancient churches in Milan, it was built in 379-386 A.D., in an area where martyrs had been buried.

PORTA NUOVA DISTRICT A vibrant, futuristic district overlooking two neighbourhoods: the Garibaldi and Isola districts. The heart of the area is the large raised square dedicated to architect and designer Gae Aulenti. Just a little further on you will encounter the Bosco Verticale with the new Biblioteca degli Alberi, the Diamant Tower, Palazzo Lombardia and Palazzo Pirelli designed by Gio Ponti. 4 TRIENNALE DI MILANO Since 1923 this is an international institution which organises exhibitions and events about arts, designs, architecture, fashion, cinema, photography and theatre. CIMITERO MONUMENTALE A real outdoor museum catering, on the one hand to the whims of the elite of Milan’s society, and on the other to works of art by famous sculptors of various eras.

AN UPWARD SPIRALING CITY

Porta Nuova is a sprawling − area, the result of a project of urban and architectural redevelopment involving the area that leads from the Porta Garibaldi railway station to Piazza della Repubblica, up to Palazzo Lombardia. In 2005, an architectural − project curated by American real estate developer Hines focused on transforming the area into a technological hub comprising more than twenty buildings including skyscrapers, offices, cultural centres and urban residences. Several of Milan and Italy’s − highest and most innovative skyscrapers, including the futuristic CityLife complex (visible in the background), are located in the Porta Nuova district. Among these, the Torre UniCredit –housed in the vibrant Piazza Gae Aulenti -,

the Torre Solaria – the highest residential skyscraper in Italy-, the Torre Diamante and the green complex of the Bosco Verticale featuring hanging gardens designed by Stefano Boeri. The large public − park in the middle of the neighbourhood, known as the BAM Biblioteca degli Alberi, extending over an area of 90,000 sq.m., was designed to provide a vast number of interconnecting pedestrian paths and to create a real botanical library. The park features over 450 trees and 90,000 different plant species, plus recreational areas, themed circular forests, teaching paths and pedestrian and bike paths. THE ENIGMATIC DE LA TOUR

▲ Georges de La Tour, who was well known in his own time, the 17th century, but then practically forgotten for the next two centuries, was rediscovered in 1915 and, even today, little is known about him. This first exhibition in Italy dedicated to him sheds new light on the painting of this mysterious artist. It explores his experimentation with light, the contrast between the devotional world of his ‘daytime’ paintings and the compassionate depiction of his ‘candlelit’ scenes. The exhibition also features painting by other illustrious artists of the era including Gerrit van Honthorst, Paulus Bor and Trophime Bigot.

TAX-FREE SHOPPING

By law, non-EU residents are entitled to reclaim the VAT paid on items purchased and exported from the EU: before finalizing a purchase, they should ask the shop assistant whether they are eligible for a tax refund.

Reservations for most restaurants are strongly advised. n elegant dining room decorated with cement tiles recovered from old Sicilian residences and circular decorative elements, resembling those of a telescope, welcomes guests to the gastronomic universe of Terrammare. Here, amidst wood tables, majolicas and baroque elements inlaid in the boiserie and large decorative chandeliers, typical of Sicilian tradition, diners can sample authentic Trinacria cuisine, with a particular focus on the areas of Modica and Scicli. Røst, new culinary hotspot A gourmet hub, infused with a Scandinavian essence, has opened in the Porta Venezia neighbourhood. An emblem of the new bistro scene, that combines Nordic influences with the robust flavours of Italian ingredients. The cornerstone of Røst’s culinary concept is simple cuisine, based on the rediscovery of tradition. The restaurant focuses on two key components: seasonal vegetable and ‘poor’ cuts, including brains, liver, tongue, codfish and mackerel. In spite of their distinctive flavours, traditional dishes are prepared with delicacy, re-imagined with a contemporary twist and accompanied by natural wines. The menu does not feature any defined categories, preferring instead to offer a horizontal narrative among the various dishes, which can be shared to encourage a common tasting experience and conviviality. Its ambience, based on the same concept of intimacy, also features a mix of traditional and modern elements. lue Note, one of the world’s most famous jazz clubs, needs no introduction. According to a tradition inherited from the legendary club in Greenwich Village, New York, the Milanese branch of Blue Note in the Isola district is a go-to destination where you can enjoy a combination of good music and food every evening of the week. Spread over 1,000 square meters, the location is designed to seat up to 300 people on three different levels, and offers top-level acoustics. Dinner is served in the same room as the concerts and features a simple but sophisticated menu, including Italian and

international specialties accompanied by a selection of local and French wines, plus a list of more than 200 cocktails and liqueurs. After launching with a Cajun menu inspired by typical New Orleans flavours, today Blue Note continues its pursuit of culinary innovation thanks to an agreement with Don Lisander, a restaurant renowned for serving the most authentic dishes of Milanese cuisine since 1947. Four specialties signed by the historic restaurant have now become a fixture on the menu at Blue Note. These include Mondeghili, typical Milanese meatballs, risotto, traditional braised meats and ‘amor polenta’, a dessert that pays tribute to polenta,

Discover the life of a Genius The largest permanent exhibition in the world dedicated to engineer and humanist Leonardo da Vinci has recently reopened. By Elena Peverata

he new Leonardo da Vinci Galleries at the Museum of Science and Technology is the only permanent exhibition using a strictly scientific approach to enlighten visitors about the person, and work of Leonardo the engineer, humanist and explorer of nature. The new Galleries reinterpret the historic layout with which the Museum opened to the public in 1953 and represent a unique cultural resource meant to inspire new generations, the world of research and enthusiasts of all ages. A journey through the art of war, work and production, flight, waterways and architecture that ends with an

overview on da Vinci’s influence on Lombard Renaissance painting, and an immersive installation dedicated to the drawings executed during the last years of his life. A spectacular setting accompanies visitors on a journey that, starting from Florence in the 15th century, traces Leonardo’s training and the influence of Tuscan engineers, up to his stay in Milan during the rule of the Sforza family. More than 1,300 square meters and 170 historical models, works of art, antique volumes and installations that bring the exhibition’s narrative to life. The visit to the permanent exhibitions is included in the Museum’s admission ticket.

Leonardo3 – The World of Leonardo The exhibit allows visitors to appreciate the many sides of Leonardo da Vinci’s technical and artistic production with interactive stations, fully functioning maschines made from studying Leonardo’s manuscripts, unprecedented physical reconstructions, digital restorations and threedimensional reconstructions of his creations. This is the only place in the world where visitors can see a reconstruction of “The Last Supper” as it was 500 year ago, when Leonardo painted it. The exhibit is produced bt the Leonardo3 (L3) Research Center. Museo del Duomo Totally refurbished in 2013, the museum houses and highlights all the material not presently in use in the Duomo, linked to its history and construction. Comprising 2,000 square metres of space, twenty seven rooms and thirteen thematic areas, the museum hosts more than two hundred sculptures and over seven hundred gypsum models and then again paintings, stained glass windows, tapestries and architectural models ranging from the 15th century to the present day. Worthy of particular note are the rooms of the Tesoro, Tintoretto’s “Jesus Among the Doctors”, the imposing wooden model of the cathedral built in 1519 and the tiles of the fifth door of the Duomo by Lucio Fontana and Luciano Minguzzi.
