The historic Carmel Valley Airport, once the world’s first planned residential airpark, is currently at the center of a major redevelopment debate After sitting dormant for over two decades since its closure in 2002, a new proposal has been submitted to transform the 17-acre site into a housing community. This preliminary application suggests the construction of 90 new homes, utilizing the "builder’s remedy" to bypass certain local zoning restrictions. The plan has sparked significant concern among residents who fear the project will overwhelm the valley’s infrastructure and environmental carrying capacity. Historically, the site has been valued for its rural character and its role as an emergency staging area during regional wildfires Local land use policies emphasize that any future development must prioritize open space and remain consistent with the residential nature of the neighborhood Community advocates argue that such a dense development could permanently alter the quiet, agricultural heritage of the area Conversely, proponents and state mandates highlight the urgent need for diverse housing options within Monterey County As the county begins its formal review process, the proposal faces intense scrutiny regarding water usage, traffic safety, and noise impacts. The final decision will likely serve as a landmark case for how California’s housing laws intersect with preserved rural landscapes.

This past week, we headed down south with some friends to escape the peninsula weather and soak up some sun in Palm Springs! We spent time shopping along El Paseo, checking out spots like Saks Off Fifth, ALO, and Tommy Bahama. Of course, we also indulged in some great meals at Mastro’s, Tommy Bahama, and an incredible frozen yogurt spot called Handle’s. All in all, it was a much-needed short getaway and a refreshing change of scenery!
