McDonald’s signs deal with Hussle as part of annual Monopoly game MCDONALD’S, the UK’s largest fast-food retailer, is collaborating with Hussle to offer a fitness-based prize as part its MONOPOLY promotion at this summer. This is the first time a gym offering has been included in the popular annual giveaway, played by more than seven million people annually. The deal will give McDonald’s customers the chance to win access to any of Hussle’s 2,000 plus partner health clubs and leisure centres. Winners will be given a code to enter into Hussle’s website, where they can then select the most suitable club for them from a nationwide selection. As part of a competitive tender process, Hussle was selected rather than a single chain as the gym partner of choice, which means thousands of operators will now benefit from this exposure. For operators working with Hussle, this new partnership offers the opportunity to attract new users at no extra cost, create a good impression and ultimately, win new members. “This is unprecedented exposure for our industry – partnering with such a colossal commercial brand will mean every club on the Hussle platform is showcased to a third of the UK population (more than 3.5 million customers every day) over the six weeks the MONOPOLY promotion at McDonald’s runs in restaurants,” said Jamie Owens, director of fitness partnerships at Hussle. “And with our new Membership Conversion Service (MCS), which actively encourages customers to join clubs they visit, we are opening up a whole new joiner channel in a notoriously tricky age group, as the Monopoly audience is predominantly 16-24 year olds.” The giveaway, launched in 2005, works along similar rules to the classic Monopoly board game. Customers collect game pieces – which appear as stickers on food and drinks packaging – and each piece represents a tile on the board. When customers collect a set, they win a prize. Refurb is completed at Crystal Leisure Centre Jamie Owens There are also instant win game pieces, which can be redeemed straight away, and Online Win game pieces, which encourage customers to engage with an Online Win microsite to win more prizes, including the Hussle prizes. “Post pandemic, with the country more focused on health than ever, now is the ideal time to get in front of the 85% of the population who never use our facilities,” added Jamie. “I can think of no better way than collaborating with The MONOPOLY promotion at McDonald’s, arguably the UK’s biggest brand engagement platform. “We’re excited to catapult the fitness industry onto this stage. “The old adage is so true … if we keep doing the same things, marketing fitness to the same people, we’ll always get those same people through our doors. “If gyms are going to be mainstream, we need to partner with mainstream brands. This campaign is uncharted territory but it’s also an exciting opportunity to directly target new customers. “This partnership parades fitness in front of seven million people we wouldn’t necessarily get to speak to otherwise.”
THE 25-metre swimming pool at the Crystal Leisure Centre has re-opened to swimmers following a refurb by Alliance Leisure. The upgrade works at Crystal Leisure Centre have included a complete tile repair, re-grout and clean of both the 25-metre pool and the leisure pool, as well as the addition of several interactive water features and a DJ booth to compliment the leisure pool, where the slides have also been relined and painted. The changing facilities have been completely remodelled to create a spacious changing village perfect for families. The works at Crystal Leisure Centre are part of a wider £31million leisure regeneration programme procured through the UK Leisure Framework, developed and managed by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd, which has seen Alliance Leisure work with construction partner Speller Metcalfe to deliver the project. Julia Goddard, senior development manager at Alliance Leisure, added: “It’s fantastic to see the difference this investment has made at the Crystal Leisure Centre. “By committing investment in leisure, Dudley Council is creating active environments for residents to
enjoy for many years to come and we are delighted to have been involved in such a transformational project.” Residents in Halesowen are also to benefit from the Council’s investment, with an £8.8million remodelling project well underway at the Halesowen Leisure Centre. The fitness suite has been expanded and a wellness suite added to extend the appeal to a wider segment of the community, plus the adventure play area, café and main entrance will all enjoy a revamp. In the pool area a new changing village will enhance the experience for learners through to advanced swimmers. In Dudley, construction of the new, £18.1 million Duncan Edwards Leisure Centre is also underway, with the centre due to handover in November and open in January 2022. Benefiting from excellent public transport links via the forthcoming adjacent Metro stop and the nearby bus Interchange, the new leisure centre will include a 25-metre, eightlane swimming pool and a teaching pool with spectator provision. There will be a four-court sports hall suitable for indoor football, badminton and more, plus a sauna, 100-station gym and fitness suite, two group exercise studios and an immersive cycle studio.
CIMSPA partners with YOUR Personal Training YOUR Personal Training has gained its CIMSPA Training Provider Partner status, giving authority and industry recognition to YPT’s CPD and mentoring programme. Aaron McCulloch, managing director, YOUR Personal Training, said: “We are always looking at ways to professionalise the role of the personal trainer, and our CPD educational pathway, alongside our one-to-one mentoring programme, ensures the YPT trainers are the best in the industry. “This trusted training provider partner status will enable us to continue to
create up-to-date and relevant CIMSPA accredited and recognised courses for our PT’s across the UK, which have ‘real world’ application.” James Pittam, a successful YPT personal trainer working out of Penrith Leisure Centre, added: “The YPT mentoring programme gave me a really good insight into how to run and maintain my PT business. “PTs are often great at the ‘workouts’
but not so experienced about the expectations and reality of running their own PT business. “The training put me in the right frame of mind and gave me business confidence. “It taught me how to schedule and budget, and even when it’s okay to say no. I also learnt how to approach new clients, how to promote my service and how to turn enquiries into bookings. “The CPD put me on the right path to success.” Aaron added: “The PTs feedback to us on what support they need and, using our industry experience and expertise, we create the content in an easily digestible format, enabling our PT’s to put the training into immediate practice, which further supports the success of their coaching and PT businesses.

Club increases retention and engagement COVID-19 caused huge challenges for businesses across the globe, and The Lensbury Club was no exception to this. Retaining members and enhancing its community approach was harder to achieve remotely. So, The Lensbury sought the expertise of Legend to provide a virtual workout app that would not only engage its members, but that would become a long-term retention tool. The Lensbury Club is an exclusive leisure club, spa, hotel and conference centre, owned by London and Regional Hotels. Set in 25 acres of gardens and grounds on the banks of the River Thames, The Lensbury offers a new gym and studios, tennis, swimming and even a watersports centre. Engaging members With a long-standing legacy of creating a strong community and over 7,000 leisure members, The Lensbury initially found it difficult to keep this loyal community spirit alive when the first lockdown was enforced across the country. Marketing and communications director Sam Woolmore said: “A big part of our club is the community element and we love being in touch with our members. “Before the pandemic, a lot of our members would come in as many as six times in a week to not only workout, but to socialise, eat, or just take time out from their busy schedules. “The longer the lockdown went on, the more isolated we felt from our members
average 73 times each. Since launching the app, The Lensbury has gained more than 250 virtual members, which not only exceeded the club’s initial target of 150, but has also enabled the club to generate revenue, even with the physical club closed.
so we started looking into ways to engage and keep in touch with them.” The Lensbury started to offer members third-party content from well-known brands such as Les Mills and lululemon, sent via links in email marketing campaigns. High demand for this content and the impact it had in engaging members and restarting conversations led to The Lensbury exploring how the activity could be expanded to include its own content through a more accessible platform. Creating a virtual community During England’s second national lockdown in November 2020, Legend proposed a solution for The Lensbury to create its own app, with content generated by its own instructors
allowing members to see familiar faces and begin to replicate the experience they had grown accustomed to in the club, at home. Developed in partnership with Innovatise UG, The Lensbury app enabled its fitness classes to be delivered to members in the comfort of their own homes. Initially offered to members at no extra cost, high demand for the app and support from members prompted The Lensbury to introduce a £40 charge per month for use of the app. In return, members could access constant fresh content and mirror their in-club class timetables, at home. 190 live and on-demand classes were hosted on The Lensbury’s member app during lockdown The classes have been viewed on
Looking to the future What started as a tool to engage members and reestablish the lost community feeling, has quickly become a long-term retention strategy to complement The Lensbury’s previous £1million investment in the club itself. With Covid-19 as a catalyst for fast forwarding the implementation of a strategy that would have likely waited for a couple of years, The Lensbury is confident that use of the app will continue, due to many of its members being frequent travellers who would be keen to benefit from the flexibility of ondemand virtual workouts. “The pandemic has certainly provided a chance for many of our members to get used to using this technology that ordinarily may have been reluctant to adopt it,” said Sam. “The use of the app is a huge opportunity for The Lensbury moving forward; there are so many ways that we can utilise this technology. “The teams have worked hard to bring our vision for the app to life extremely quickly and create something that has worked very well for our members, so we are excited to see how we can use it to continue to adapt to the changing demands of our members in the future.”

Four keys to social media promotion for health clubs By Kate Landers
Looking for new gym wear or workwear? HIGH quality embroidery can be hard to find at a reasonable price. Overpriced services with poor quality garments and embroidery can leave you feeling let down. Embroidered workwear and gym wear allow customers to identify who your employees work for. Your business’ professionalism is a key factor in making your business stand out. It is important that the quality of your workwear is at a high standard. T-shirt printing is fast but when poor materials are used, it can become a major problem when it comes to washing the garments. But with our screen-printed logos, they can last up to 60 washes ensuring quality control. Instyle Clothing provides a high-quality service for personalised workwear and gym wear. With increasing costs and hassle, finding the right place for you can be difficult. We aim to make the process as easy as possible. Helping to reduce stress and increase productivity. We pride ourselves in high quality garments, with thousands of lines to choose from. With our extensive knowledge of materials and embroidery, our team can
find the best suited garments to fit your company’s needs. Many of our clients are from different occupations. From builders’ workwear to equine clothing and horse numnahs, we cater for a variety of different companies. Recently, we have worked with The Hidden Hut, producing t-shirts, gilets, sweatshirts and caps. This order was completed just in time for the 2021 G7 Summit. A high stitch count is necessary to ensure that the embroidery is sustainable. Daily usages and after many washes cause the materials to look worn and tired. We ensure that we always use a high stitch count with the best quality threads, this is reflected in the finished product. Vinyl printing and screen-printing processes for T-shirts and other garments are efficient ways to print your company’s logos or designs. This process is also quick and efficient, especially if you are looking for a fast turnaround. Call us today to get a quote for your workwear. Call 01257 447338 or email info@instyleclothing.co.uk
THERE is no doubt, Facebook is no longer the be-all and end-all of social media. Instagram, Tik Tok, Snap Chat and Twitter are also great platforms that health clubs use to engage with their members and promote their offerings. There are many different things to consider when creating your social media strategy to attract and retain new members to your club. Here are four of the key aspects that you should think about: 1. Engagement – Probably the most important thing to consider when using social media is engagement. When people interact with your content, it is then shown to even more users. Put some thought into the kind of content that people will enjoy. Be original and human, tell a story, use visuals and spend some time to create attention-grabbing titles or captions for your content. Create content that will spark emotion. 2. Leverage your members – Within your club you have a gold-mine of fantastic content potential and advocates for your brand. Perhaps you have some members from
Kate Landers a local sports team who have just won their league competition, or a member who has just completed a 100km charity walk. Telling these type of member stories is great feel-good content that people love to see, and as a bonus is fantastic for engagement as friends and family members interact with it. 3. Quality over quantity – So often I see clubs posting just for the sake of it. A good golden rule to follow is to answer the question, why am I posting this? There should always be a purpose behind your posts. It is better to have two or three high quality posts per week than ten irrelevant posts that no-one interacts with. 4. Paid advertising – If you have a marketing budget, then paid advertising can be a great way to deliver your message to more people. Unlike traditional media, there are many targeting options on advertising platforms, so that you can deliver your message to the right people at the right time, based on gender, age, interests, location and more eg if you have a ladies only section in your club, you could target ads to woman only who are interested in health, fitness and weight loss. n Kate Landers is the advertising accounts manager at Creative Fitness Marketing.

Don’t let broken gym equipment break your health club forever ON TOP of the list of things that annoy health club members is encountering an unoccupied machine with a sign saying, “out of order.” Today’s equipment is tougher than ever, but it’s also more technologically complex. Having more features and moving parts mean more things can go wrong. Over time, breakdowns are going to happen, especially if you have a high traffic club. Chronic machine failures can cost you more than poor member satisfaction—injury on a faulty piece of equipment is a major liability you can’t risk. Of course, there’s no way to avoid equipment breakdowns. Machines malfunction no matter how proficient you are at maintaining them. It’s how often it happens and how quickly it’s repaired that makes the difference. This is why staying on top of equipment maintenance is one of the
most important requirements for a club operator. Cardio equipment, particularly treadmills are the most vulnerable for the simple reason they’re used more often than any other machine. Nothing gets worn down and abused more than treadmills, particularly the running belts and the deck platform that absorb every
WE ARE powerful as a team. The importance of partnerships is something that’s been highlighted in the past, but the effect of a good team up in practice has never been more relevant than it is now. We’re stronger together, and it comes as no surprise that this has been the best way to tackle almost every challenge that has presented itself over the past year. Whereas many companies would have traditionally been in a ‘never the twain shall meet’ set-up as far as competitors are concerned, ironically physical distancing has often created a professional love-in that is hopefully long to stay in place. Thoughts have been shared on webinars that would have previously been shrouded in secrecy, at least to some extent – at best, they’d be stuck in the boardroom instead of shared with an audience. Plus, businesses have found new ways
of giving each other’s customer base new offers and incentives with genuine joint benefit, instead of solely focusing on their own clients and prospects. Competing gyms have put aside their differences to take their community competitive spirit to the Myzone challenge board, too, earning MEPs and taking titles around the country and the world. While this is often solely fun and games or a source of motivation, what it brings with it is a refreshed sense of community on a greater scale than before. Chat groups may spend a lot of time boasting and baiting each other with tongues firmly in cheek, but they also share the workouts they’ve completed and offer new ideas or ways of moving for others to follow. This joined up thinking has always been the way for some, but it’s a breath of fresh air for many and a ‘new’ approach that can grow this industry like no other. Long may it continue.
footfall. Anticipating equipment breakdowns can be an advantage both in reducing downtime and fixing the machine before the problems get worse. However, you don’t want to play a guessing game with your equipment. You need to protect your investment and maintain customer satisfaction. You can’t take a chance of having
multiple machines being broke or going offline at the same time. The best solution is a partner who can provide technical support along with replacement parts—and do it reliably without breaking the bank. PD:Verified is a professional register bringing together qualified tutors, assessors, internal and external quality assurers. Because of their vital role in the learner journey, the aim is to provide these professionals with recognition of their qualified status and ongoing professional development. The register provides both professional recognition and a membership kitemark, underpinned by a code of conduct, and also supports career development which will enhance the learner journey. All members must meet the criteria set out by PD:Verified, and demonstrate how they maintain their status through continuing professional development (CPD) – this will be showcased on the member’s personal profile for all training providers and employers to see. Tom Bell, CEO of PD:Approval, said: “The register has been developed out of a growing need to support professionals in the UK and internationally by sharing best practices industry wide. “Members can be proud to be a part of the register, showing employers that they are committed to being the best they can be whilst maintaining their CPD, raising their profile and getting the recognition they deserve.” PD:Verified supports training professionals globally across fitness and other sectors who may not have the opportunity to gain professional recognition. IndigoFitness completes Strive installation IndigoFitness has completed the installation of a new premier health club, Strive, on the island of Jersey. Strive is a 32,000 sqft, world class training facility, with an approach that’s driven by one goal; to provide outstanding service and fitness expertise for all in a space members feel is their own. As well as a health club, the facility also boasts a separate state of the art performance centre which offers specialist services such as altitude rooms, a SwimEx hydrotherapy pool, and a dojo. IndigoFitness has been working closely with Strive throughout the design and build process, ensuring the
correct amount of space is given to the various training areas, as well as advising on correct sub-floor construction for spaces where heavy weights will be
used. Being involved right from the start of the project also meant Indigo could support Strive with 3D gym design layouts as their ideas evolved.
Our in-house design and manufacturing department was also able to create many customised pieces of equipment that are unique to Strive, such as the boxing rig and yoga frame that are fixed directly into the ceiling and walls, freeing up valuable studio floor space. The result is a truly world class space that will not only benefit the residents of Jersey, but also the many elite sports teams that Strive are hoping to attract for training camps. How to stop missed payments

So, here are our tried and tested methods to collecting missed payments, and preventing them before they happen. Online payments are particularly good at preventing missed payments from your customers because you can set up a direct debit or recurring card payment, meaning you’re guaranteed to collect the money (as long as there are sufficient funds in the payee’s account of course). If you run monthly rolling
Use automation to prompt payment If you tried both of the above and you’ve still got members with overdue payments, it’s time to start chasing them – a task that’s incredibly frustrating and time consuming for gym owners that are spinning enough plates already. If you didn’t already know, automation is a gym owners’ best friend. Set up your CRM system so that as soon as a customer has failed to pay their membership fee, they receive a communication from your club notifying them that their payment has failed. In ProRight, you can set up a
Prevent entry for customers with overdue payments If your club operates from physical premises, you’ll likely already use some form of access control; it might be turnstiles or something as simple as a barcode scanner to register attendance. Whatever your setup, your software should not be letting in customers with overdue payments. This allows you to address the issue at your premises and come up with a solution for your customer to get their payments up to date there and then. In a nutshell, there are plenty of ways to avoid missed payments and even a couple of solutions for when a small number of individuals slip through the net. The most important thing is to implement a process that’s not only effective but works for you too. You don’t want to spend hours writing emails and making phone calls to members that might have missed a payment when you can bypass all of that by using automation, for example. Nutty about plant based products
MET FOODS the award-winning plant based, dairy-free people are an AA BRC allergen free facility, with two separate factories producing a range of gutfriendly coconut and almond based yoghurts and spreads for food service. A family owned, British business, Met Foods Ltd are passionate about creating dairy-free products that prove dairy-free doesn’t have to be bland or boring. Made with the finest ingredients sourced from ethical suppliers to create free-from products that not only taste good but are good for you too. They have been revolutionizing plant-
based products since 2011; launching the UK’s first ever coconut milk yoghurt to market followed by the UK and Europe’s first almond milk yoghurt, giving consumers a healthy and delicious product that wasn’t soy or dairy based. Not only are their products a tasty relief for those who are lactose intolerant (approx. 15 per cent of the UK population) but also caters to the evergrowing vegan community satisfying the appetite for dairy free plant-based products that can be enjoyed every day. Since the COVID pandemic one in four Brits has reduced the amount of animal
products they are consuming. Veganuary had a record 500,000 people sign up in 2021 which is up 100,000 on the previous year and double the number from 2019. In the last 12 months the number of vegans has increased by 445,000 people (40 per cent). It is predicted that by 2025 vegans and vegetarians will make up 25 per cent of the British population. When Met Foods Ltd wanted to make their packaging more environmentally friendly, they worked closely with National Flexible to launch recyclable
yoghurt alternatives for Nush and COYO Organics. A spokesperson said: “We are really pleased with the packaging; not only does it look bright and eye catching it is recyclable. “Sustainability is important to us and our customers, we want to ensure our products are easily recyclable and as kind to the planet as possible. “National Flexible helped us make this as easy as possible for our customers wanting to reduce their packaging waste.”
Why has it taken the fitness industry so long to get it’s own comparison site? IT’S SHOCKING but nearly half of all businesses will die in the next 10 years if they don’t accommodate digital transformation and new technology. Luckily the fitness industry finally has its own comparison site – FitnessCompared. The commercial gym equipment comparison site is here and growing by the minute due to its user-friendly nature and quick route to super savings. For the first time gym operators can compare thousands of products in one hit. The unique “search by product and features” tool is super easy to use and saves so much time. Former Technogym product manager Kate Fearon says the days of big trade shows and hours spent on the road and in meetings no longer provide a cost-effective business model. “FitnessCompared is a game changer and a gift for gym operators, even giving suppliers a percentage score versus the buyers chosen
requirements,” she said. “It also provides an alternative vehicle for suppliers to develop sales and opportunities using very few resources.” Daniel Jones, CEO of Orbit4, parent company to FitnessCompared, said there are a number of factors which have led to a more cautious approach to digital transformation in the fitness industry. He added: “Our industry is a very close-knit and personable community. We like to talk and buy from people we know and see. “This could be behind why many of us have been a little slower than others at getting on board with digital transformation. “But we know this and that is why FitnessCompared offers a money and
time saving solution via our digital comparison site with the added benefit of personal service. “We don’t just find you the equipment at the best price. Our team of experts will help you design and develop your gym in person. Its digital transformation with a friendly face.” Understandably, gyms are always on the lookout for new members. But this makes it easy to forget that you also have to take care of the existing members and the equipment they use. Your existing customers are up to 50 per cent more likely to purchase additional services compared to new members. It can cost up to seven times as much to gain a new member than to
keep an existing one. Keeping your members satisfied not only helps you with client retention, but it could also actually help you gain new members as well so you would do well to take care of your existing clients with the best equipment. FitnessCompared is a part of Orbit4 – the umbrella brand for FitnessCompared, FitnessFinance, WeServiceGymEquipment and WeBuyGymEquipment. Orbit4 is the first digital ecosystem that fully automates the entire commercial fitness equipment journey. Once assets are uploaded into the system, the platform auto-populates each quadrant within the dashboard with real-time quotations from suppliers and service providers. Saving thousands of hours of earlystage procurement every year for the industry. In addition, WeBuyGymEquipment provides an accurate residual value of the gyms existing asset at any time during the asset cycle. This allows gym operators to make informed decisions when to upgrade their products. Understanding the true cost of ownership is critical and the ecosystem delivers true, live data so operators can recognise the sweetspot of decision making.

Outdoor Fitness Concepts launches at pace with cornerstone investment By Steve Perrins
THE idea had been buzzing around my head for the best part of five years and wasn’t driven by the Covid restrictions, but my need to fill a huge void in the market for a credible year-round outdoor fitness offering, which wasn’t being met by existing suppliers. Redundancy, lockdown, and a catch up with an old friend were all the motivation I needed to move the idea forward. That said, it’s been a difficult 12 months, but securing cornerstone investment earlier this year was an incredible step for us, more so, considering both Adam Bellamy and Jacques de Bruin were both former board members of Pure Gym during the initial growth of the brand. They have an incredible knowledge of the industry and are consistent source of advice. Since the lifting of restrictions and the re-opening of gyms we have moved at pace and interest from all segments has been incredibly high. We are excited to have secured outdoor projects with leading European Health Club Chain Holmes Place.
Steve Perrins established health and fitness market, the passion and dedication Steve and his team have for this business will be an asset to operators across the world. “The need for outdoor training is ever increasing and has been accelerated during the last 15 months and Steve and his team have a product that not only serves this need but also challenges the status quo of traditional gyms. The experience of the team puts them in a great position to succeed and I am glad to be on this exciting journey with them” Jacques de Bruin – investor
“Outdoor Fitness Concepts have a very unique offering that is well positioned to bring sustained innovation to the
Outdoor equipment supply is very one sided. Its either activity based, the type you see in public parks, or performance
based functional training rigs. Whilst they both have a place in the fitness eco system there is a massive void left in between these two areas. We calculate that these outdoor facilities are either unusable or undesirable for up to 90% of the population and club memberships We have addressed this and approached the challenge head on and we believe we now have the largest selection of commercial outdoor fitness equipment and turnkey outdoor fitness solutions in the UK, if not Europe, with over 200 outdoor fitness products. The foundation of our equipment is a range of innovative and intuitive outdoor variable plate loaded strength equipment that can rival those of indoor products. We can provide a huge selection of standard and custom designed outdoor equipment lines for the broadest cross section of abilities and age groups. These include boxing, small group PT, functional training, suspension training, equipment storage, fitness trails, adventure courses on-demand group exercise equipment and a wheelchair range, suitable for any public, commercial, corporate, or home outdoor spaces. Outdoor equipment has a limited effectiveness if the space is only useable seven months of the year.
Our aim from the start was to redefine what is possible with outdoor gyms, through a range of canopies, all-weather flooring, solar powered winter ready lighting and security measures. We can now turn any outdoor space in to an all-year, all-weather, 24-7 fitness space. Venues now have the ability to provide credible outdoor fitness spaces, increase member capacity at a fraction of the capital costs of developing indoor facilities and with almost zero operational cost. Our turnkey Training Parks® solution is our flagship multi-use outdoor fitness area primarily designed for public parks and outdoor spaces and provides a huge variety of equipment and unsupervised training options that when positioned around areas of population could significantly improve exercise uptake. Whilst it’s disappointing to have seen many outdoor spaces gathering dust recently, help is at hand. We can use our expertise to help our customers reframe any of their current outdoor spaces and turn them in to desirable, all year, 24-7 workout spaces suitable for all abilities. Power Plate teams up with Myzone POWER Plate has teamed up with Myzone to provide its community with new class experiences and the opportunity to offer rewards based on effort, every time they move. As the global leader in whole body vibration, Power Plate is embracing Myzone’s MZ-Remote platform to host classes live online in addition to using MZ-Instruct to educate communities in the gym. Together these initiatives are set to bring big benefits to class participants’ strength, endurance, circulation, mobility, bone health and weight loss goals. “With the Power Plate community able to access products both at home and in the gym, this new class offering means they can continue to reap the benefits
of vibration technology and heart rate training, wherever and whenever they want to work out,” said David Stalker, CEO of Myzone EMEA. “It is the perfect way to cement the link between movement in the gym and at home. Flexibility is key to unlocking the next chapter in our great fitness and physical activity sector. The way we approach classes and programming has not changed, but the way that we measure investment and spend has, both as a business and as a participant. “Now the Power Plate community can reap the benefits of joined up thinking within their wider community. “The better the digital experience, the better the engagement is going to be all round.” Power Plate understands how
combining physical and digital spaces reaches more of the community as part of a movement that continues to grow. “With so many people adapting to find new ways of exercising during the pandemic, taking part in online classes such as MZ-Remote, going for daily walks, or exercising with their family, Power Plate recognises the importance of being able to track and monitor these workouts both at home and in the gym,” added Sandy Kolkey, chief marketing officer at Power Plate. Power Plate’s community will be able to get the Myzone class experience from any location, with full access to personal statistics and constant contact with their class instructors. Gyms and fitness studios will also benefit from the ability to incorporate
Power Plate into their training sessions and group exercise classes, connecting with members from any location – building loyalty and trust. By monitoring an individual’s progress, instructors can provide valuable feedback – keeping members engaged for longer. Transition Zone in London will be the first fitness studio to implement the Power Plate x Myzone combination. Owner Claire Finlay added: “I am really excited to further strengthen our sense of community. “Myzone facilitates this by tracking and rewarding all forms of activity be it walking the dog, playing football with the kids or a 25-minute Power Plate class. “Technology and community sit side by side, and for me it’s the future.”

Branching out is a win/win scenario for gyms By Jamie Owens
COLLABORATING with thousands of gym operators across the UK enables Hussle to create partnerships with brands keen to introduce fitness to their customers. It’s a win/win scenario – the brand partner can provide customers with variety and genuinely national reach; participating gyms benefit from the new customers these companies bring. McDonalds it not just any old partner though. Last month, we announced we’re collaborating with McDonald’s to offer a fitness-based prize as part its annual MONOPOLY promotion, played by more than seven million people. The deal will give McDonald’s customers the chance to win access to any of Hussle’s 2000+ partner health clubs and leisure centres. As arguably the world’s leading fast-food chain, people have strong opinions on the merit of a fitness brand collaboration. You only have to think back to Cristiano Ronaldo and his interaction with a bottle of Coca-Cola at the Euros to get an idea of the polarised views people have, and accusations of ‘sport-washing’ often come with the territory. When deciding to work with McDonalds, Hussle had to take all of this into consideration; it wasn’t a decision we took lightly. Our conclusion was that, ultimately, we support ukactive’s goal to get more people, more active, more often and it’s in this spirt that we feel the partnership has such merit. To truly reach more people we, as
Jamie Owens a sector, must be willing to test new channels. If we continue to present broadly the same message through broadly the same channels, we’ll only ever reach the same people. MONOPOLY at McDonald’s is one of the UK’s largest consumer marketing campaigns. It therefore presents a unique opportunity for our industry to reach a lot of people quickly. People we may not reach otherwise. Traditional mainstream marketing campaigns have prioritised rewards such as free coffee or cheap cinema tickets. We felt it was about time fitness benefited from the investment brands make in these campaigns. Hussle wasn’t the only fitness brand to think this way. As part of a highly competitive tender
process, we had to prove the national reach of our gym partners was a more compelling offer than a single gym chain collaboration. Our argument was that each time a McDonalds customer won the opportunity to visit a gym, it was crucially important there was a viable gym nearby. Without this, the offer would go unused and the opportunity to increase activity would be missed. The open question to this campaign is whether any lasting changes in activity levels will really be achieved. It’s not a question Hussle can answer alone as, ultimately, we rely on the service provided by the gym partners
that McDonald’s customers go on to visit. But with calls for a ‘work out to help out’ initiative gathering momentum, and a rallying call from ukactive Chair Tanni Grey-Thompson for the UK to become the most active nation in the world by 2030, partnerships with mainstream brands like McDonald’s have an ever more important place in the sector. In fact, we believe they are crucial to reach more people and to help them become more active, more often. To find out more about how Hussle could provide you with a low-cost, new member joining channel, visit https:// www.hussle.com/list-my-gym} n Jamie Owens is the director of fitness partnerships at Hussle.

‘Perfectionist’ Dan hopes gym offers members all they need DAN Tough has a vision for his new gym proposal… that no-compromise plan is to offer members everything they could possibly want and need from a fitness facility. Blackpool-based TUFF V2 is due to open next month and is the next step in Dan’s quest to provide the perfect gym. Back in 2017, after many years working in the fitness industry as a personal trainer, Kirkham-born Dan opened Tuff Training and worked hard to provide a first class facility. While Dan was satisfied with the way Tuff Training developed, he was keen not to standstill and still harboured a pipe dream to open a gym that didn’t just appeal to bodybuilders but to a much wider demographic. “I believe Tuff Training is the best bodybuilding gym in Blackpool but having worked, in the past, for many
gyms including corporates, I still had an idea to create a family-owned independent gym that offered the personal touch – I wanted a gym that was classy and offered everything members could want.” When the first lockdown came along, Dan saw how people’s attitudes changed – they appreciated what gyms offered more and realised the value of a gym after they were forced to rely on home workouts. All the grants he received were ploughed back into his business and once it re-opened the gym started to turn a profit for the first time since it opened. “I’m a perfectionist and this is when I realised that my dream to make a bigger, better gym could become a reality. “I found new premises which were better – it’s a new build, with great
parking facilities, close to the motorway and stone’s throw from our current location. “I decided to take a punt as there were massive gaps in the market after other gyms had closed for good.” Dan has been grafting endlessly on TUFF V2 – with handpicked equipment, a much larger team, full disabled facilities, new branding and double the capacity of Tuff Training, he is determined that it will cater for everyone with a classy, personal feel. “TUFF V2 will offer a member experience like no other. Tuff Training members will be able to transfer at the same rate and I am confident that the new equipment will wow everyone,” said Dan. Dan has worked with Panatta to ensure that it’s only the best for TUFF V2 members.
“I came across Panatta during lockdown and I was completely blown away by the service. It really is the most exclusive gym kit and it has been amazing working with them. “I absolutely love their equipment and the attention to detail is second to none. I can see myself getting more and more Panatta kit and while I have invested in some other specialist kit, I will always look to Panatta first. “We already have the largest and most varied selection of equipment in the area but we don’t want to stop there. In the first 12 months of being open we plan to introduce something new every single month. “We have already placed orders for three new pieces of equipment to be added in the first three months.” Good luck to Dan … when the going gets tough, TUFF V2 gets going!
