New inclusive cycling guide launched SPORT for Confidence has joined forces with The Royal College of Occupational therapists, Moving Occupational Therapists and Sport England to drive ‘The Therapeutic Value of Cycling – a resource for health professionals’. The guide has been co-created with students on their clinical placement, drawing on insight and experience from a number of other partners with the aim of encouraging health care professionals to promote and use cycling within their clinical practise. “If physical activity was promoted by all health care professionals and used more widely as an assessment and intervention tool, this could make a significant contribution to reducing inactivity and levelling up health inequalities,” said Lauren Walker,
professional adviser at RCOT. “Through education and resources such as this new guide to the therapeutic value of cycling, we aim to support health professionals to understand the benefits cycling can deliver in terms of therapeutic outcomes and encourage them to embed it within their practise.” The Therapeutic Value of Cycling guide has been produced by occupational therapy students from Derby and Sheffield University, supported and supervised by Sport for Confidence, in collaboration with British Cycling, Wheels for Wellbeing, Mixed Ability Sports, Sheffield Cycling 4 All, Cycling UK and Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust, Disability Rights UK, Disability Sheffield and Health Education England.
“This project has been a true collaboration,” added Liz Fletcher, occupational therapist at Sport for Confidence. “It is full of information about how cycling can be adapted and embedded within assessment and intervention, giving health professionals the professional permission they need to embrace cycling as a core component of their clinical delivery. “It also explores the range of cognitive, sensory and physical outcomes that can be achieved through participation, brought to life by lived experience case studies and backed up by scientific evidence. “Across the UK, disabled people and those living with a long-term health condition are less likely to be active.
This is leading to widening health inequalities. “Through education and support that enable the inclusion of cycling in clinical practise, we aim to mobilise health care professionals to play a significant role in closing the inequalities gap, creating a more equitable society where everyone has access to the services and facilities they need to live a healthy, happy and fulfilling life.” This project has been funded and supported by Sport England and coincides with the start of a £12.7million trial, announced by the Department of Transport, to encourage GPs to prescribe cycling as part of a wider social prescribing movement designed to improve the nation’s mental and physical health.

Mike completes Versaclimber charity challenge BRISTOL-based online body transformation coach Mike Spiring, 55, took on a charity challenge of a lifetime, climbing 60,000 feet with a Versaclimber LX Model, all in aid of raising money for Bristol After Stroke Charity. The 10-hour challenge, twice the height of Everest, took place on Keynsham High Street in the city. Bristol After Stroke is an independent, local charity based in Bristol and South Gloucestershire, helping people to rebuild their lives after a stroke. Its services include a combination of practical, social, emotional and psychological support to stroke-affected people and their loved ones. Mike set up Leaner for Life in 2020 to help people lose weight, reduce the risks of coronary heart disease, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and to just enjoy exercise as part of this process. As part of his work, Mike works to change his client’s mindset and create
weekly or daily habits, from exercise to diet, that will stay with them once they have finished. He said: “Last year, my old school friend had a life-changing stroke at the age of 54. “Being in the fitness industry myself, he asked me if I’d help him with his rehabilitation while he was in care at Bristol After Stroke Charity. “Not only did I want to help my friend, I also wanted to raise funds for the charity that does so much good for so many people. In the last few months alone I’ve known three people who have suffered strokes. “I was doing the charity climb on the Versaclimber LX, which I have used for a number of years now. “To me, it’s about getting a cardiovascular workout to improve stamina and burn calories, but the biggest advantage is that it’s low impact so it’s perfect for rehabilitation. It also
works a whole range of muscles. “The clients I work with also enjoy training on the machine. If they have hip or back injuries, they can get a great workout, without having to go running or participate in high-intensity interval training (HIIT). “They just simply enjoy training on the machine.” Operations manager of Versaclimber UK Ltd, Ryan Kelford, added: “We’re delighted to have played even a small role in such a fantastic challenge for charity. “It’s always a pleasure to be able to give to people, and we’re glad that Mike’s open air challenge prompted other passersby to exercise and stay fit. “Bringing a second climber on the day to support Mike’s challenge proved to be successful, as people walking on the High Street were keen to join in, help raise money for the cause and see how the machine works.”

Industry veteran urges physical activity sector to embrace active ageing ACTIVE ageing presents the biggest opportunity for the physical activity sector today, according to industry veteran David Stalker. Speaking on the first webinar on Active and Healthy Ageing from Innerva, the world’s leading provider of power-assisted exercise equipment, the president of EuropeActive and CEO of Myzone EMEA said it was time for operators to focus on older adults. He added: “As operators, if you can’t see that one of the biggest opportunities you have is the ageing population, then frankly I don’t know what you’re doing in the industry.”
In the UK there are 12 million people aged 65 and above. By 2035, more than half of adults are expected to be 50 or over and the number of people aged 85 and over is projected to double by 2050. Following Covid, the sector has the chance to move from being fitness delivery partners to health delivery partners. He believes the physical activity sector can make a far greater difference to ageing people and the lifestyle diseases they suffer than the pharmaceutical industry. “For the first time health is sitting at our door with the opportunity to deliver it
and ageing is a crucial element of that, so let’s grab it,” he said. David, who addressed more than 100 professionals from the fitness, rehabilitation, healthcare and social care industries on the online seminar, said some of the UK’s larger trusts were starting to address active ageing, and he urged other operators to follow suit. He added: “As a sector, we have to embrace this challenge. It’s hard work, but it’s crucial that we make a difference to people’s lives. We must do it.” Attendees also heard from Rachel Young, Research Fellow at the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC)
at Sheffield Hallam University, who shared the findings of research showing the impact of Innerva power assisted equipment in combatting the natural effects of the ageing process. Jon Hymus, commercial director at Innerva and webinar host, said: “The ageing population represents a seismic shift in our society and we can’t afford to ignore the opportunities it presents. “Helping people to sustain physical activity as they age is vital to creating a healthier nation. Operators have to broaden their current offering if they want to support the health and wellbeing of older people.”
Oldham Active launches free hot shower initiative OLDHAM Active (Oldham Community Leisure) has launched its ‘Shower and Go’ scheme to provide hot showers for people within the Oldham community who may be struggling to heat their homes and heat hot water. Shower and Go follows the launch of Oldham Council’s wider Warm Banks initiative in creating welcoming, heated, sheltered spaces for those who cannot afford to put the heating on. The move will see places like
libraries turned into Warm Banks as part of the council’s £3m plans to tackle the cost of living crisis. Shower and Go launches this October, with the scheme being available at five of its locations across the town in Greater Manchester. The showers will be provided in 10 minute slots, with shower gel and shampoo provided too. Stuart Lockwood , Oldham Active, CEO, says: “Having a warm shower and being able to get clean is a basic
human right. “As a community interest company it was important for us to be able to provide these facilities to people and families who maybe struggling this autumn and winter. We support our community on a daily basis, and this is just an extension of our core values. Oldham Active is determined to support our local community during these difficult times, and we want to make sure nobody is left to suffer this winter.
We will provide hot showers to those most vulnerable, treating them with respect, dignity and a warm welcome. “Times are tough for everyone, but it is local residents on the lowest incomes who are feeling the brunt of rising prices the most,” added Stuart. “We have trained our staff to be on hand to help or to answer any questions people may have, and will be able to provide and signpost other warm and food bank schemes in the area.”

Striving for excellence with 3D printing AS THE UK’s leading gym equipment service provider, ServiceSport UK strives for excellence, which is why our latest investment further supports our 3D printing department. The purchase of a high-definition handheld 3D scanner enables us to print almost any gym equipment part that our customers require. ServiceSport UK has already invested in four 3D printers and we’re regularly manufacturing a range of gym equipment parts for our customers across the world. We know how difficult it can be to source gym equipment parts and have them delivered on time and this will soon be a long-lost memory with the introduction of 3D printing. These printers can create physical, tangible products from a digital 3D model. They can be used for prototyping, customised production runs and even individualised items. 3D printing has been around for more than 20 years, but it’s only now becoming a real mainstream phenomenon. The technology has reduced the cost of goods by as much as 80 per cent, and that saves manufacturers and companies money on production. We’re now starting to manufacture gym equipment parts using the newly purchased
handheld 3D scanner to get accurate dimensions of any gym equipment part. Our 3D scanner has lighting projection hardware and software algorithm, the 3D scanner is capable of scanning a wide range of objects of dark or black colour and casting metal surfaces, improving the capability for 3D scanning of materials. This new approach in scanning capability allows processing up to 3,000,000 points per second, it also means inspection can be automated and creates a repeatable process
that can be trusted time and time again. Taking measurements using hand tools to create products is a tedious task and yields inaccurate results. It’s much easier to get precise and accurate measurements quickly with a 3D scanner. As well as scanning for the sake of printing or designing from a blank slate, it’s easier to use existing objects as a reference for the new design with reverse engineering. There are also times when the original CAD drawings of a design are no longer
available but documentation is essential to manufacture the product. By scanning the object with a 3D scanner, it’s easy to identify all the surface measurements required to analyse its construction. It’s also much easier to understand, recreate or improve a design. For further information on 3D printed gym equipment parts, drop our team an email at info@servicesport.co.uk or visit www.servicesport.co.uk/3d-printing/

housing expertise and an opportunity to work out with other, like-minded people. “Creating a wraparound solution that enables people to connect with our brand and services wherever they are and build an experience that fits in with their lifestyle helps us to build a sustainable future. “The introduction of Les Mills content via Active Nation Anywhere adds huge value to our digital offer and we are really pleased to be the first to bring this integration to market.” Karen Mason, senior customer experience manager at Wexer, added: “It’s great to be a part of another first with Active Nation – from the launch of the Wexer app to now first in the UK with the mobile content collaboration of Les Mills classes. “The Les Mills content will be updated regularly, along with our wider content library, in line with emerging consumer trends and preferences – which will ensure content through their app remains consistently relevant for their community of users.” Active Nation Anywhere is available to anybody. Operator to become carbon net zero by 2030
DAVID Lloyd Leisure has set a target of becoming carbon net zero by 2030, 20 years ahead of the current UK target. The group has established five key areas which will help it deliver its goal and is making changes throughout its operations including generating renewable energy on site, reducing indirect emissions in the supply chain, reducing overall water and energy consumption, using sustainable modes of transport and reducing plastics and waste. The group has invested £20million on energy efficient technology, including low energy LED lighting on tennis courts and overhauled the heating and cooling systems. Solar panels will be installed in some clubs which will result in the
generation of 20% of each club’s energy usage. The group has also switched to green energy resulting in 100 per cent of its UK electricity now coming from renewable sources and has become the first health and fitness club in the UK to gain a water selfsupply license. David Lloyd Leisure is Europe’s largest health and fitness group by revenue, operating 127 clubs – 100 clubs in the UK and a further 27 clubs across mainland Europe. David Lloyd CEO Russell Barnes said: “We are always striving to make a positive impact on the environment and the communities in which we operate. “The steps we have taken so far have resulted in a reduction
of 10,000+ tonnes of CO2 which equates to over 10,200 flights to New York and back. “There’s so much more to be done and we will continue to prioritise tackling climate change across all our clubs.” Further actions taking place over the next 12 months include: n Trialling energy efficient showers. n Rolling out solar panels to other clubs. n Installing an air source heat pump – to remove 70 per cent of club carbon emissions. n Fitting EV charging points across clubs. n Reducing single use items and placing recycling bins in every club. n Launching a ‘lights off’ initiative to reduce energy waste.

What every trainer should know about mental health IMPROVING mental health is routinely cited as one of the top reasons people join a gym. Research shows that exercise can have a hugely positive effect on mental wellbeing and that’s a good thing - whether it’s releasing stressfighting endorphins or giving people newfound drive and motivation to achieve their goals. In addition to helping their client’s reach their health goals, a large part of a fitness professionals’ job is to check in on their client’s mindset and mental health. So, what happens if a personal trainer notices their client is struggling with their mental health? Do they have the skills needed to help someone showing signs of anxiety, depression or an eating disorder? And, even if they do, is it the place of the fitness professional to intervene or should this be left to medical professionals? James Smith, business development manager at Active IQ and Andrew Gilbert-Dunnings, qualification development manager at Active IQ will be addressing these questions in their talk at Tomorrow’s Workout, taking place in Leicester on November 18. “When people go to a gym, they see their trainer as an authority on everything related to their health physical and mental,” said James. “But the fact is, most fitness professionals do not have the skills nor the confidence to recognise or support mental health issues despite the fact that maintaining or improving mental health is one of the top reasons many people join a gym.” A challenge facing the industry is that many fitness professionals do not think it is their place to address mental health. But the fact is, clients put a lot of
Andrew Gilbert-Dunnings
James Smith
trust in their personal trainers and they will seek the guidance of their trainer to navigate their mental health challenges. But the so-called “mental health continuum” is often difficult to understand without the right training. If somebody has a mental illness, people will often expect them to be unhappy and unable to function in everyday life, while an individual without a mental illness is seen as more likely to have positive mental health; however, this is not always the case. The mental health continuum explains that having a mental health disorder does not automatically mean that mental health will be poor. “One of the goals with our Level 2 Mental Health qualification is giving people the tools to address mental health issues,” said James. “Not only will the qualification help someone to recognise the signs, but they will also be armed with the knowledge and vocabulary to intervene and signpost their client to professional help if required. “These skills are empowering and potentially lifesaving, not just
in the gym but in their personal relationships as well.” A lack of knowledge or awareness can cause mental health stigma. Research conducted by Time to Change into people’s beliefs and attitudes found that views are changing and mental stigma is reducing, but there is still work to be done. At their talk, Andy and James will discuss how personal trainers are well-placed for mental health training and how more training can help change attitudes and reduce stigma. “For personal trainers who might feel apprehensive about dealing with mental health issues, it’s important to remember that they are not required to treat a client’s problems,” added Andy. “Even with specific mental health training, a personal trainer is not a substitute for professional help like a counsellor or therapist, or even a peer support group. “Think of mental health training as a form of continued professional development that can help enhance your skills and knowledge.” However, it is important that fitness
professionals are aware of the positive and/or negative impact they may have on the mental health of those they are working with. Whether it be reducing exercise anxiety through empathy and understanding, showing negative and stigmatising attitudes and language around mental health, or by reducing the chances of an eating disorder through healthy conversations around food. Awareness is also only part of the equation. Having the practical tools is critical and that’s why the Level 2 Mental Health Qualification from Active IQ includes Mental Health First Aid. “The First Aid portion is what makes this qualification unique,” said Andy. “It provides the practical tools needed to help someone experiencing mental health problems. “It includes recognising mental ill health, providing initial support, signposting, escalating and promoting good mental health in oneself and others. “Recognising and talking about mental health is only part of the solution. “More training is required to fill that gap between awareness and practical skill. “Armed with the right knowledge, not only will fitness professionals be able to recognise signs and symptoms, but they will have the confidence and ability to step in and help, whether that is asking the right questions and listening, providing initial support, or signposting to other options. “The impact of this is potentially life changing, and we are looking forward to telling more people about this at Tomorrow’s Workout next month.” To book your FREE ticket to Tomorrow’s Workout, go to https://tomorrowsworkout.co.uk/delegate-booking/

Operator joins forces with expert life coach TOTAL Fitness has partnered with health and lifestyle coach Milla Lascelles to launch its first in-club ‘Motivation Space’. Members will be able to participate in an exclusive session where they will receive tips, advice and support from Milla to tackle any symptoms of low motivation and the impact this may be having on their mental health and emotional wellbeing. The Motivation Space will launch at the Total Fitness Wilmslow club, with two group seminars and a series of one-to-one sessions taking place throughout the day, offering members the chance to work with Milla in a safe and comfortable environment. Milla is an expert holistic health and lifestyle coach, supporting and guiding people to make positive health and lifestyle changes, making her the ideal expert partner for this campaign as she helps to guide members on their motivational journey. She said: “It’s such an exciting opportunity to partner with Total Fitness for the launch of their first Motivation Space, particularly as October sees the transition into longer and darker days, meaning our motivation can easily drop and our overall mood be affected. “I’m looking forward to having some coaching sessions with their members so they can benefit from my expert advice on keeping motivated over winter. “For anyone struggling with their mental health and in need of support
this World Mental Health Day, I have shared some insights to help understand why they may have low motivation and what they can do to improve this. “There are many different factors that affect people’s motivation. One of the main reasons is not having a restful sleep and falling into a rapid eye movement state, meaning even though you’ve woken up after eight hours of sleep, you may be feeling exhausted and totally unmotivated. “There can be a host of reasons why you haven’t slept deeply – this could
be alcohol related, coffee related, or even down to the electronic devices we use before bed - as the blue light from our screen time depletes our melatonin which affects our sleep. “Additionally, if you experience stress in your life, you may be procrastinating which means you’re stuck in an avoidance mode rather than drive mode, which can also affect motivation. Perhaps you have a huge roadblock ahead of you and the reason you can’t get through it is down to fear? Again, feeling fear towards something can affect
motivation. “As such, low motivation can make people irritable and angry. It can make someone feel unworthy and often they tend to beat themselves up about it. Low motivation may also mean you’re in self-sabotage mode, so you turn to habits that don’t serve you. These habits may be scrolling too much, turning to processed junk food, not moving the body, which in turn will make you feel lethargic and perhaps anxious – lowering your motivation. “I would make sure my sleep hygiene is in good order first and then look at my morning routine. These two aspects of how you go to sleep and how you wake up are crucial to motivation.” Dan Gibson, general manager at Total Fitness Wilmslow, added: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Milla for the launch of our Motivation Space on a day which is all about raising awareness for mental health and the struggles many people are currently facing. “We’re committed to helping all our members on every step of their mental and physical fitness journey, and we know how much low motivation can impact people and their ability to exercise. “The Motivation Space is a chance for members to speak to our expert life coach and combat any lifestyle struggles head on, so they can enter a happier mental space, which in turn will help to positively impact their fitness routines.”

ServiceSport UK has recently launched a new app so that gym operators across the country can efficiently report upholstery requirements, whether it’s a repair to existing upholstery, ordering new gym upholstery pads or arranging for logos to be embroidered into new or existing pads, all with just a click of a button. At ServiceSport UK, we specialise in the reupholstery of gym equipment and provide the same high-quality materials that are used by gym equipment manufacturers. By uploading photos of your gym upholstery rips and tears using our app, we can ensure you will receive a same-day quote, get you booked onto our system, repair your equipment and keep your members happy. Our app makes sure that our work can be carried out as smoothly and efficiently as possible which is why we also offer on-site repairs. Why apps work In the tech world, companies try to make their products more “sticky;” in other words, how do you make a customer keep using your product and make it so integral to their life that they won’t want to cancel? Apps are often one of the top ways product teams try to engage customers and extend their time as customers. There are a few different ways that apps achieve company growth and retention goals: 1. Apps help you stay connected It’s harder and harder to get in front of your customers – whether it’s through email, mail, or social media. But apps can help you stay connected by sending relevant push notifications. Consider using pushes to remind members that they have an upcoming class or to prompt them to sign up for a personal training session.
check gym hours while waiting in the line at the grocery store. By making client engagement quick and easy, you’re more likely to have those clients engage! 3. Apps give you more opportunities When you implement an app, you also get access to a wealth of data about your members. You’ll be able to see who is using the app and who is making purchases. You can use this information to fuel your outreach and try to engage people who haven’t been visiting or ask common gym-goers for referrals.
2. Apps help people save time Think about the times when you get an email which tells you to go to a website, where you need to remember a password and then verify your identity on another app. It makes you want to never log in again, right? Compare that to the
experience of opening an app you know well – a couple of taps later, and you’re able to do what you need to. In addition to the simplicity, apps also offer a level of convenience you won’t get elsewhere. You give members the ability to
How to get a custom branded app It’s clear that implementing an app for your business can not only aid in growing your business but also improve client satisfaction. So, what’s next? EZFacility gym membership software can provide custom branded apps that integrate seamlessly with your other gym management tools. When they all speak to each other, it makes it easy to schedule classes, manage members, and handle purchases and billing. As the fitness industry increasingly moves towards sustainable practices, reducing waste is a key consideration for gym owners and operators. Gym equipment is an often-overlooked aspect of the recycling process, with many owners opting to replace, rather than refurbish, worn parts. Nationwide on-site gym upholsterers, Gym Wizard, explain how their reupholstery services can dramatically reduce landfill waste.
Reupholstered pads, such as those shown above, are indistinguishable from new pads.
An example of UK gym pads waiting to go to a landfill site.
GYM Wizard’s core work is the reupholstery of a range of gym equipment, offering a greener alternative to replacing worn gym pads. Not only does this offer considerable cost savings, but the process also prevents 97.5 per cent more waste from going into landfill sites. Gym pads consist of three layers – a wooden or plastic base, thick foam, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) fabric cover. The bonded wood and foam are difficult and expensive to recycle, while vinyl is non-biodegradable and almost impossible to sustainably dispose of, with a National Geographic study finding that plastics currently take up 79 per cent of the space in landfills. Plastic can only be recycled two or three times before its quality prevents it from being used in most applications.
accounting for 84 per cent of that total. 19.75 per cent of that waste was attributed to commercial and industrial businesses, including gyms and fitness centres. Alongside reupholstering pads, Gym Wizard is taking its commitment to waste reduction a step further, offering clients a high-quality fabric manufactured entirely from recycled plastic. Suitable for furniture and breakout areas, the material is flame-retardant, highly resistant to abrasion, and manufactured to IMO standards. “Whilst we’re delighted to be able to give customers the option of sustainable fabrics for breakout areas, recycled fabrics are not yet available to recover gym equipment,” Chris added. “The industry is moving in the right direction, but the need to reupholster pads instead of replacing them is still greater than ever.
Waste reduction paramount to sustainable gym operations Conversely, gym pads can easily be reupholstered up to 10 times without needing to replace the wood or foam padding, making it an increasingly viable option for health and fitness businesses. “Some larger operators tend to replace their gym pads when they show the earliest signs of wear and tear, which often leads to a large build-up of discarded equipment,” said managing director Chris Medley. “The average gym pad weighs approximately 4kg, but the material we remove from the pad weighs just 200g. That means by reupholstering their equipment, our clients can reduce their waste by 95 per cent. “For every 1,000 pads that we reupholster instead of replacing with new, we are saving approximately 3.8 tonnes of waste going into landfill.” The latest government figures show that the UK generated 222.2 million tonnes of waste in 2018, with England
A gym pad cross-section shows the volume of foam and wood that goes into landfills compared to the vinyl covering.
“Over the last few years, we have introduced a range of measures across the business to reduce waste and energy usage, including donating excess fabric to local schools and craft groups and installing energysaving lighting and waste recycling streams at our manufacturing facility. “In the current climate, sustainability is more than just a moral responsibility as it offers the opportunity to realise savings on operating costs and meet carbon zero targets. “We’re committed to doing everything we can to reduce our carbon footprint and hope that the message is clear to gyms who may not have considered the environmental impact of replacing worn pads with new.” For more information about Gym Wizard’s on-site reupholstery services, visit https://gym-wizard.com

The top five ways Orbit4 can save you time and automate your gym GYM operators have been forced to look at their budgets to survive. The simplest way to make savings without making cuts is to use Fit-Tech that does the maths for you. The best fit-tech is Orbit4 and here’s why; the collated data that Orbit4 delivers can pin-point the right time to buy new product, sell old, unwanted product and specifically prescribe the right service contracts by product category. CEO of Orbit4, Daniel Jones, understands that businesses want to make serious savings without cutting quality for their customers. “The gyms that get ahead are those already analysing true cost of ownership of their assets so they can make informed decisions. “Predicting the right time to refurbish your facility isn’t easy and data hasn’t always been at the core of that important decision – until now. “Being smarter and making decisions using data is 100 per cent the right approach. There are many benefits of Orbit4 and it isn’t just about saving some money. “It’s about better due diligence, streamlining operations and changing the mindset of longer-term procurement processes.” But that’s not the half of it. Here are the
top five ways Orbit4 will save you money and time: n Here’s a secret that’s a little shocking – most gyms don’t track ‘cost of ownership’. That is absolutely incredible when you consider it’s their most expensive asset. Orbit4 tracks the cost of ownership for you while making your operations more efficient. It even makes your club more profitable. n It’s the first digital ecosystem that fully automates the entire commercial
fitness equipment journey. For the first time ever, gym operators can use the bespoke asset management system that also automates the procurement process – all data-driven from historic asset behaviour. n When products reach the best time to trade-in and buy new, the connected ecosystem auto-populates each quadrant within the dashboard with real-time quotations from suppliers, service providers and traders.
n This smart, data-driven tech is saving gyms thousands, plus hours of earlystage procurement every year for the industry. Just like the car market, people like to know the value of the assets, so they know what money they have for their next purchase or perhaps budget for other internal improvements like new flooring and decoration for the gym n Within the Orbit4 platform, the WeBuyGymEquipment quadrant does exactly this - it provides an accurate residual value of the gyms existing assets at any time during the asset cycle so that gym owners have full visibility of the current market value of the existing assets. This enables them to compared the current value of asset versus the forthcoming cost to service and maintain versus the price to buy new, either via capital purchase or monthly leasing cost. As a result the premium Orbit4 dashboard gives you immediate access to live quotations for service contracts and new equipment, finance options and the residual value. The cost of Orbit4 starts from £45 per month. With estimated savings of over £24,500 over a five-year period for the average size gym. More for bigger gyms. Find out how you can you go digital on asset management and drive huge efficiencies with Orbit4. www.orbit4.org or contact info@orbit4.org

MH1 Global – mental health support and expertise for the health, fitness and wellness sector THE MH1 Global movement co-founded by industry veterans Graeme Hinde and Lynne Briggs has grown in size and stature since its full-blown inception earlier this year. Initially created as a Facebook group in 2021 to enable people working in the fitness industry to share experiences and knowledge in a like-minded forum, Graeme handed over the reins to Lynne – who has substantial experience in all areas of fitness operations, training and development – to take it to the next level in January. Ten months later and the movement has a number of successful events under its belt, a dedicated website which embraces the four pillars on which MH1 Global was founded, amazing support from industry partners, a strong and diverse advisory board, downloadable resources, and even an online shop selling quality, branded merchandise thanks to a new addition to its growing list of partners, Northern Made.
What are the four pillars on which MH1 Global is founded? n Educating – mental health awareness training, behavioural change training and a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) platform. n Researching – seeking out best practice, global trends, shareable ideas and studies. n Innovating – the ‘Lifestyle Discovery Questionnaire’ (LDQ) is a peer reviewed and validated mental health questionnaire created by Paula Litherland, MSc, of Edge Hill University. n Talking – Zoom meetings, relaxed chat show-style talks, events, one-to-ones and speaking to leisure and fitness operators. Here, we take a look at what MH1 Global has achieved this year in each of its four pillars and look forward to what is coming up in 2023. Educating MH1’s online CPD platform includes an ever-growing choice of formal and face-to-face courses and workshops, including Active IQ level 2 Mental Health Awareness (including Mental Health First Aid) and the level 3 unit Facilitating Behavioural Change for Health and Wellbeing. The first wellbeing workshop entitled the Brain-Body Connection is scheduled for 24th February 2023 in Manchester. The CPD platform, powered by MH1 partner FitPro, features world-renowned authors on a range of relevant topics. “Education in your time at your pace,” says Lynne. Researching The MH1 team scours the globe to bring the latest research and examples of good practice. Recently uploaded from its partners at the New Health Project is

Innovating The creation of MH1’s ‘Lifestyle Discovery Questionnaire’ (LDQ) is a ‘game changer’ in supporting leisure industry staff and members in a more holistic approach to programming activity. Developed by Paula Litherland as part of her master’s degree at Edgehill University, this is a validated psychometric tool that measures the trajectory of mental health using 11 lifestyle factors as markers. Many of these factors are required by public health and health and wellbeing boards, which operators will need to evidence for funded projects. In addition, having this data will help operators to assess the lifestyle needs of their members and communities. Lynne explains: “The LDQ is what the industry has been waiting for – a validated tool that will produce data to support us in proving that we are front and centre in being able to provide a more holistic approach to interventions that will improve people’s mental as well as physical health.” Another new partner for MH1 is ReferAll, a data management platform that is already well-established with clients including public health teams, local authorities, leisure trusts and NHS organisations across the UK. ReferAll MD Stu Stokes says: “When you meet a team like MH1 Global with Lynne and Paula, sometimes things just ‘click’. This ‘click’ led to a conversation that led to ideas, laughs and possibilities. I am immensely proud of the partnership and to be working with MH1 Global on such an important topic.” Talking During 2022, MH1 have held a series of Zoom chats with guests, beginning with industry veteran Malcolm McPhail, who shared his thoughts on the role of the leader in creating a culture of mental wellbeing. It resulted in a well-received session from which further discussions ensued. Jenny Patrickson, from Active IQ, then joined Lynne for ‘Back to the Future’ – a journey through time looking at how education and training have adapted to the needs of the sector and its clients. MH1 is proud to deliver two of Active IQ’s courses as foundations of the MH1 Coach Certification. Group fitness expert Rachel Holmes shared her experience and thoughts on the role of the group exercise instructor and mental health, both from a personal and client perspective. More recently we welcomed Helen Tite, who heads up iCareiMove, which delivers services and talks about the ageing pathway and managing chronic health conditions as you age. She had the attendees gripped
MSc graduate Paula Litherland, who has created the ‘Lifestyle Discovery Questionnaire’ (LDQ) as part of her studies at university. by her talk entitled ‘menopause, mental health and suicide prevention‘. There are many more topics in the pipeline for this relaxed, informal online format. MH1 has also held its first in-person joint event with its LFX business network partners, and another event supported by Matrix Fitness UK is planned for March 2023. More details to follow. But talking isn’t just about hosting events and online discussions. The team at MH1 say they enjoy talking to individuals, operators, communities and organisations and they’re keen to grow their presence in the mental health space. If you are interested in collaborating, see the contact details at the foot of this article. Introducing MH1 Global’s partners Matrix Fitness UK has supported MH1 Global since inception and will continue to do so during 2023. Commercial Director Julian Taylor says: Matrix Fitness are proud to partner with MH1. Historically health and fitness has focused on the body, however over recent years, the stigma around mental health conversations has lifted. Now mental health rightly shares equal standing with physical wellbeing. “As a business we know how important it is and we want to support the industry, through MH1, to continue to provide support and guidance to clubs, their staff and their clients. Working with Lynne and the team as they continue to build the support and guidance to the industry is a pleasure.” Matrix was soon joined by Oldham-based, fullservice marketing agency Cornerstone DM, LFX and FitPro. More recently ReferAll and Northern Made have joined the ranks of MH1 Global partners, who are all committed to supporting the movement’s growth and evolution. New advisory board Lynne describes herself as ‘very proud and humbled’ to have engaged the expertise that forms MH1’s recently announced advisory board. She says: “We have a diverse and experienced group of experts that help and advise us on a whole range of topics. “Hans Meunch is our global advisor, Dr Chris Loxley our consumer behaviour expert, Dr Paul Batman, international movement specialist, Rachel Young is our go-to person for equality, diversity and inclusion, and Sam Mattioli is our performance management architect. Their biographies make for eye-opening reading.” To learn more about MH1 Global’s products and services please email info@mh1global.com Website: https://mh1global.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/mh1-global/ about/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/mh1global/

How can I make my gym stand out from other clubs? By Wayne Heath
THERE are nearly 4000 gyms in the UK. With such a competitive market, it can be difficult to stay ahead of the competition and make sure prospects are coming to you first. Understanding the competition can help you come up with new services, selling points and identify your unique selling points. So, we’re going to discuss how you can stand out from the crowd without becoming consumed by what your competitors are doing, allowing you to define your club’s strategy and get more customers in the process. Be market-led, not competitor-led Although it may sound counter-
Wayne Heath
intuitive, avoid reading too much into what your competitors are doing. Research is important, of course, but checking up on what other gyms in your area are doing daily can distract you from achieving your business goals. Before you know it, you’ll be trying to run an identical business to the club across the road. Why is that a bad thing? Because they’re already fulfilling the demand for their offering. That’s not to say you can’t offer the same services at a better quality or more competitive price point, but you should only go down that road if you’ve identified the potential. Instead, concentrate on what the market is lacking and what your niche is. Focus on your niche Every business needs a niche. If you
try to be every kind of gym for every kind of customer, you’ll struggle to position yourself within your market. It’s better to focus on one thing and do it well rather than focusing on too much and executing it at a low standard. If you know you can deliver your service to a high standard because you have the right expertise and resources, that puts you in a very good position. For example, if you’ve been a Crossfit trainer for ten years and you have a team made up of more Crossfit trainers, it’s a safe bet that you’ll be able to build a reputable Crossfit gym that helps its members get results. Maintain a high level of customer service You’ll never be able to fully control your customers’ buying decisions,
but how you respond to their behaviour is entirely in your control. That’s why providing a high level of customer service is so important; though it’s commonly an area that gym owners let slip. Manage your customers’ expectations, stay in touch with them regularly and always maintain a people-first approach. In doing so, you’ll develop a strong sense of loyalty that will be hard to break. For more tips on how you can nail your customer service strategy, read our guide. The best approach to standing out from the competition is to keep an eye on what your competitors are doing, but don’t let it become the focus of your business strategy. Don’t undervalue your offering by trying to sell the cheapest membership on the market, either. Focus on being the best at what you offer, market it effectively and watch the customers roll in! Struggling to implement ideas that’ll help you stand out from your competitors? Get in touch with us and we’ll show you how ClubRight makes it possible. ClubRight is the best-rated, bestvalue member management software on the market right now. Club get 356 new members in seven weeks during health awareness campaign IF YOU would like new members for your health club or gym, this article may pique your interest. Springhill Leisure Club recently completed a membership promotion which saw 356 new long-term members sign up on the offer and 129 members sign up on the club’s regular membership packages. So how did they do it? The success of this campaign came down to a combination of a strategically designed marketing offering coupled with a well-refined membership sales process, focussing on uncovering the prospects ‘emotional driver’ or ‘why’. Not only did the campaign include digital marketing, but it was also complemented with a range of other mediums such as direct mail, outdoor signage, community, and corporate outreach. The campaign was designed and carried out by agency Creative Fitness Marketing over a period of seven weeks. CFM managed the health awareness campaign at the club and provided two expert fitness sales consultants who were responsible for greeting, touring and signing up the new members. CFM has more than 30 years’ experience in fitness marketing both in the UK, and internationally. Harry Ainslie one of CFM’s business development managers, said: “One reason we join so many members in such a short period of time is that our teams typically achieve a close rate of up to 85 per cent, compared with a lot of clubs who may only join between 10 per cent and 20 per cent of leads.
“We spend a lot of time on sales training with our staff. “Our sales process isn’t what you might find in a typical gym where staff focus on showing off the unique selling points of the club such as swanky new equipment, designer changing rooms or a hip café. Rather our teams spend time chatting with the prospect, building rapport and trust. “They ask the right questions to help the prospect cement their fitness goals and uncover their ‘why’ behind these goals (such as having energy to keep up with their kids or to feel confident on the beach). “This gives the prospect perspective, and a strong motivation to get started. The key behind all
of this, is the genuine care that our staff have for the prospects to make a positive change to their lifestyles.” Springhill Court club manager Michael Maher added: “This is my fifth campaign with CFM. It’s a great way of getting new memberships through the door.” Many clubs find using CFM a great complement to their ongoing marketing as CFM upfront the marketing costs for the campaign, taking away any risk to the club. Advertiser’s announcement
Panatta – Super Pendulum Squat The Super Pendulum Squat is a specific machine for a full workout on thighs and glutes muscles, with main focus on the quadriceps and minimal stress on the lower spine. The wide footrest allows great freedom in the positioning of the feet leading to different muscles stimuli produced. The inclination adjustment of 2 positions allows to change the ankle flexion angle for the best customization of the exercise. The spring counterbalance system not only reduces the unloaded weight of the thrust unit, but also works in synergy with the lever mechanism that connects the two weightbearing arms to the thrust unit itself; the result is an ascending resistance curve over the entire ROM. The machine develops an everincreasing load curve that is in line with the force curve exerted by the main muscles involved in the exercise; this allows for a physiological muscle contraction that remains high and ideal over the entire ROM. The peculiarity of the Super Pendulum Squat lies in the guided trajectory which creates a movement halfway between squat and leg press, not reproducible with any other machine, and which therefore adds a new range of training stimuli to those already possible with the other Panatta machines. Starting from an initial position similar to the squat position, with hip and knee at maximum flexion, one arrives at the final position where there is complete knee extension with partial hip extension, as in the traditional Leg Press 45.
It pays special attention to user safety thanks to the easy start system with manually operated lever; finally, the low position of the disc holders facilitates the loading and unloading of the machine, reducing the risks and consequences of accidental impacts with people within the range of the weight holders themselves. Don’t sweat the smart stuff INSTRUCTION, inclusion and the incentive to come back for more. Members want that community spirit from exciting programming, while professionals and staff need more time to focus on the individual. With more than 1,300 videos built into the system and more on the way, Myzone’s Smart Station is circuit training that gives something back. And, this is exactly what Bannatyne UK found when implementing the product into its new HYPR class. “The video content that you’ll find as a participant in the classes is extremely helpful,” said Oliver Cox, head of fitness programming at the Bannatyne Group. “You know what you’re doing at
every station that you’re at, and the coach benefits by being able to have the shackles off to help people with motivational cues and the corrective cues. “As an operator that’s trying to maximise the benefits that this technology can bring to members, it goes beyond the direct experience they might have in the class. “We believe that it has the long-term benefits of further engagement, more club visits, and more activity outside of using our facilities. That’s what ultimately keeps people engaged in their own exercise regimes. “Having a system now and a group exercise environment that maximises all the things that Myzone does is a great all-in-one package now. “It’s fair to say that we’ve been waiting for something like this to really activate this system in our clubs. And I think what we’ve seen them is evidence that that’s done so.” Oliver and the team recognise that, to truly reap the benefits, staff and team members need to not only embrace but

understand the product fully. “If you want to really activate the system, a key driver in our business for getting members to engage with it is obviously having the staff engaged with it,” Oliver added. “Once you do that and your staff
