WORKOUT WEEKLY
Community health scheme launched 1Life is offering a new community health scheme to support local people with simple but effective ways to improve their health and wellbeing. 1Life has launched a new initiative offering in-depth health checks as well as an easier, more attainable system to set health goals outside of a gym. As part of the Health Seekers Initiative, 1Life has partnered with GGFit and invited thousands of former members back to centres in Wyboston (Bedfordshire) Harpenden (St Albans), Lord Butler (Saffron Walden) and Woughton (Milton Keynes) for health checks using its state-of-the-art Inbody machines, which measure everything from body composition to hydration levels. The check ups are done by fullytrained 1Life coaches that have undergone further education from GGFit and can offer simple ways to improve health and wellbeing. Steve Bambury, operations director at 1Life, said: “We know there are a lot of people within our communities who take an active interest in their health but don’t want to join a gym
and this initiative is for them. “With one visit you will understand more about your body than ever before and learn simple and practical ways to improve your health. “There is so much information within the public realm at the moment and
it’s not always easy to fully know or understand what makes a person healthier. Exercise is important but we understand for some people, joining a gym will never happen. “We are trying to break down barriers and engage with more
people to help them better understand how their body works and the simple day-to-day interventions they can do to make them feel healthy – both in mind and body.” “As a public access leisure provider, we have a duty to help as many people as we can and engage with as broad a demographic as possible to provide help and advice. I’d encourage everyone to come down and get their results and change their lives for the better.” Guy Griffiths, founder of GGFit, added: “We know before the Covid-19 pandemic, just 15 per cent of people in this country had a gym membership but seven out of every 10 people wanted to improve their health. “This initiative gives people the opportunity to improve their understanding of their own health and wellbeing without needing to pay for a gym membership. “The goals set by coaches focus more on lifestyle changes, such as joining walking, nutrition or hydration, rather than a strict workout programme and diet plan. “
Programmes aim to break down barriers YMCAfit has created a range of initiatives to improve access for women into fitness and a fitness career based on a recent survey of women within the industry. The range of programmes and courses aim to help improve access for women to fitness and a fitness career, including a women’s only personal trainer course. Using feedback from a recent survey of women who have graduated from courses over the last five years, the UK’s leader in face-to-face fitness education has implemented changes that will improve fitness and break down barriers into the fitness industry for women. Erica Smith, head of YMCAfit said: “We have been hearing from a number of women that they wouldn’t feel comfortable in a male-dominated PT course or even a mixed environment, so we have created a space to empower these women and help them thrive in their careers. “We believe women deserve fitness Publishing manager: Dominic Musgrave Tel: 01226 734407 dm@scriptmedia.co.uk Studio manager: Paul Hopkinson ph@scriptmedia.co.uk Assistant studio manager: Scott Firth sf@scriptmedia.co.uk Sales and marketing director: Tony Barry Tel: 01226 734605 tb@scriptmedia.co.uk

professionals who better understand women. “Women have different experiences to men because of periods, childbirth, menopause, differing pressures from their families, society, and the media, including gender ideals and stereotypes. “This has an impact on their fitness and training, both biologically and psychologically, and we want to address
this.” The survey highlighted that: n 73 per cent felt that women might face more barriers to career progression than men in the fitness industry. n More than 67 per cent felt that unhelpful gender stereotyping negatively impacted women in fitness. n 46 per cent felt there was negative unconscious bias from decision makers
that impacted women’s careers in fitness. n 84 per cent wanted fitness professionals to have a deeper understanding of female anatomy and physiology and changes through life. n 65 per cent thought that lack of selfbelief or confidence negatively impacted career progression for women in the fitness industry. In light of data from the survey, YMCAfit has launched a women-only Level 3 Diploma in Gym Instructing and Personal Training and will be creating innovative workshops to educate fitness professionals of all genders on how to make fitness more accessible for women throughout all stages of their lives. In addition, they will be working collaboratively with awarding bodies to share the results from the survey to encourage other training providers to increase women’s health content on their fitness courses.
solutions-orientated professional who understands the true value of education within the physical activity sector. “He brings a wealth of experience to the team and I’m excited to welcome him on board.” Throughout his career in the fitness industry, Guillermo’s goal has always been to help clients improve the service they provide to their users by increasing standards of safety in training, being
more precise, generating interactions and offering an immediate reward system that makes exercise habits stick. With MEPs at the core of his new position with Myzone, he’s bringing valuable experience to the team so that he can continue to encourage healthy sports practice and get more people moving. “From my first contact with Myzone, I identified the system as an indispensable tool to complement functional training zones at that time,” added Guillermo. “Myzone perfectly reflects the trends of our sector, as it’s increasingly technological, more personalised, while offering immediate information, social interactions, games, prizes, and challenges. All this and more is within the Myzone universe and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

WORKOUT WEEKLY
Burntwood Leisure Centre acclaimed for its energy efficiency measures ENERGY efficiency measures recently introduced at Burntwood Leisure Centre were highly applauded at the West Midlands Energy Efficiency Awards for projects managed and installed by Leisure Energy – on behalf of Lichfield District Council and Freedom Leisure. They were named joint winners of the large scale project at the ceremony with other industry experts in attendance. The leisure facility in Lichfield was constructed in 2002, and despite some remodelling and previous energy efficiency works having been undertaken in 2018, further measures were needed to reduce carbon emissions and lower energy costs to enable the centre to assist with Lichfield District Council’s net zero ambitions. There was no true renewable technology within the building, lighting levels were poor within some areas and the boilers were coming to the end of their usable lives. Councillor Iain Eadie, Lichfield District Council’s cabinet member for economic development, leisure and local plan, said: “We are delighted that Burntwood Leisure Centre has been recognised in the West Midlands Energy Efficiency Awards – it is a great achievement. “The energy-saving measures, both inside and outside, will reduce the

centre’s carbon emissions by more than one third contributing to our net zero targets and we wish to thank Leisure Energy for delivering them to the centre on behalf of Freedom Leisure and the district council.” The energy saving measures that have been undertaken include: n An air source heap pump – a 350kWth ASHP with a 500-litre hot water storage
tank. n An array of 182 photovoltaic solar panels on the roof to provide electricity to the centre. n 182 new LED lighting fittings and low energy lamps were replaced in changing rooms, corridors and rooms improving illumination levels and enabling Intelligent lighting via controls, such as daylight sensing, were used where
possible. n Externally, 22 light fittings were replaced in the car park and the allweather pitch lights were upgraded from standard metal halide. Consequently, these measures will lead to a reduction of Burntwood Leisure Centre’s annual carbon emissions by nearly 260 tonnes or 37 per cent (the equivalent to the CO2 emissions from the motors of 137 cars) and gas consumption savings of 55 per cent – significantly lowering energy costs. Funding of £1,062,575 for the equipment installation was secured via the public sector decarbonisation scheme. Ivan Horsfall Turner, chief executive officer of Freedom Leisure, added: “Minimising environmental impact is a priority for Freedom Leisure right across our organisation and we are very pleased to see the energy efficiency measures at Burntwood Leisure Centre applauded at the recent West Midlands Energy Efficiency Awards. “The work completed by Leisure Energy in this project has resulted in some excellent environmental outcomes and we will continue to support and work alongside our partner Lichfield District Council to achieve further improvements.”
