Despite lacking independence for 123 years until 1918, Poland’s aviation roots stretch back to early pioneers like Lilienthal and the Wright Brothers. The Polish Air Force began in 1917 and was formally established on 11 November 1918. Despite challenges, Poland developed a vibrant aviation industry in the 1930s, producing advanced fi ghters like the PZL P.6 and P.24. Though later surpassed by foreign designs, Polish aircraft were key in resisting the 1939 invasion by Germany, the Soviet Union, and Slovakia. Despite inferior equipment and overwhelming odds, Polish pilots infl icted heavy losses. Polish Military Aircraft 1918–1939 also presents rare photographs – many previously unseen in the West – showcasing early Polish aviation, scavenged aircraft, and British and locally built planes.
• Period by period, aircraft used by the Poles in alphabetical order.

THE SHOCKING TRUE STORY OF THE ATTEMPTED HI-JACKING OF BRITISH AIRWAY’S FLIGHT BA2069
Stanley Stewart
Terror over Africa recounts the harrowing events aboard British Airways Flight 2069 on 29 December 2000, when a mentally disturbed passenger stormed the cockpit and attempted to crash the Boeing 747 over Sudan. With First Offi cer Phil Watson alone at the controls, the attacker nearly fl ipped the plane, creating a terrifying near-death experience for all on board. Captain Hagan returned from a break and, with help from passengers, stopped the hijacker. The incident, narrowly avoiding catastrophe, was dubbed the biggest “aircraft upset” in aviation history. Initially misclassifi ed, it was never properly investigated. Allegations of a British Airways cover-up emerged, as vital reports were withheld. Years later, new evidence exposed the truth behind the event and its controversial aftermath.
• The full story of British Airway’s Flight BA2069 has never been fully told before; 3 reports on the incident, one from BA and two from the CAA, were withheld from public viewing.
• When this scandal of international proportions was accidentally unearthed and then, when the truth was out, the reasons for the cover-up became obvious.
• Reveals the drama of subterfuge, deceit and an alleged criminal cover up that followed.

AMERICA’S COLD WAR MACH 3 NUCLEAR BOMBER
Graham M Simons
The North American XB-70 Valkyrie was a supersonic bomber designed to fl y at 70,000 feet and over Mach 3 while carrying nuclear weapons. Conceived in the 1950s, it was nearly untouchable by Soviet defenses of the time. Its speed and altitude made it almost invisible to radar-guided interceptors. However, the rise of Soviet surface-to-air missiles forced a shift to low-level missions, undermining the XB-70’s strengths. Despite costing $800 million (around $8.4 billion today), the program was cancelled.
In this richly illustrated book, aviation historian Graham M. Simons explores the aircraft’s design, development, and operational history, including technical challenges, pilot testimony, and accidents. Only two XB-70s were ever built, but they remain icons of Cold War aviation ambition.
• A marvel of Cold War-era aviation, the XB-70 pushed boundaries in speed, altitude, and technology.
• Was capable of carrying nuclear weapons for thousands of miles at a staggering Mach 3+.
• The XB-70 helped redefi ne military aviation.

MACHINE GUNS, CANNON AND AERIAL ARTILLERY IN LUFTWAFFE SERVICE, 1939–1945
Tim Heath
German Luftwaff e armament designers and technicians pioneered many revolutionary concepts in the barrelled armaments of their military aircraft. Desperate solutions were sought to counter the threat posed by Allied bomber aircraft to German industry and infrastructure, which saw the introduction of airborne guns with ever-increasing calibres and impressive levels of lethality. This book examines the use of the rifl e-calibre machine gun as an aircraft weapon, along with the development of cannon, and the various barrelled weaponry used or by the German Luftwaff e in the Second World War.
• Find out how German Luftwaff e High Command invested considerable resources into the design, development and production of barrelled armaments and their ammunition for their fi ghter and bomber aircraft during WWII • Examine the development of various barrelled weapons, from rifl e-calibre machine guns to heavy-calibre aerial artillery guns
• This unique work also presents a detailed and often harrowing analysis of those who were targeted by these formidable weapons in the air and on the ground.
• German Aircraft Weaponry, which uses previously unpublished fi rst-hand material, is a valuable addition to the history of one of the most brutal and destructive aerial confl icts of the 20th Century.
THE RAF’S FIRST ELITE NIGHT RAIDER UNITS
Jeremy Walsh
Only the most skilled pilots and navigators were chosen for the daring Mosquito intruder missions during WWII. Flying low at night over Europe, they targeted returning Luftwaff e bombers and night fi ghters near their airfi elds. This tactic began during the Battle of Britain but required the advanced de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito FB VI and elite crews to succeed. Squadrons 23, 418, and 605 earned battle honours for defending Malta, supporting Sicily’s invasion, aiding the Dambusters’ raid, attacking on D-Day, and countering V1 fl ying bombs. Using diaries, fi rsthand accounts, and offi cial records, Mosquito Intruders – Target Europe reveals the evolution of this elite force and why the Mosquito became the dream aircraft for many aircrew.
• Reveals how the RAF’s intruder operations began in 1942 and developed as the war progressed.
• In these attacks, the Mossie crews would patrol near a Luftwaff e airfi eld to attack and shoot down returning enemy bombers or night fi ghters.
• Draws heavily on fi rst-hand accounts from the air and ground crews involved.

FROM THE PHONEY WAR TO VICTORY IN EUROPE: THE RAF’S PART-TIME FLYERS IN WW2
Martin Wade
From the war’s outbreak in 1939 to VJ-Day in 1945, the Auxiliary Air Force (AAF) played a key role in Britain’s air defence. Formed in 1924, the AAF was made up of part-time, paid volunteers trained to reinforce the RAF during national emergencies. They quickly found themselves in action, with Spitfi res from Nos. 603 and 602 Squadrons downing the fi rst enemy aircraft over the UK. AAF units were pioneers: No.502 Squadron made the fi rst radar-guided U-boat attack, No.605 downed the fi rst V-1, and No.616 fl ew the RAF’s fi rst jets. Their bravery stood out, from dive-bombing in outdated aircraft at Dunkirk to early radar operations. This book celebrates their achievements, courage, and vital contributions to Allied victory.
• Reveals how Spitfi res of two AAF squadrons downed the fi rst enemy aircraft over the UK in 1939.
• Shows how two of the highest scoring RAF aces in the Battle of Britain were Auxiliaries.
• Along with his navigator, Flight Lieutenant John ‘Cat’s Eyes’ Cunningham became one of the war’s highest-scoring night-fi ghter crews.

THE RAF’S HANDLING AND INTERROGATION OF LUFTWAFFE PRISONERS OF WAR 1939-1940
M S Morgan
This book explores the development of RAF Air Intelligence and its interrogation of captured Luftwaff e airmen during 1939–1940. Made famous by Franz von Werra – the only Axis PoW to escape and return home – the RAF’s interrogation tactics evolved rapidly, especially during the Battle of Britain, when PoW numbers surged. Air Intelligence gathered vital information through covert recordings, interrogations, and even open-source material like newspapers and radio. These methods revealed details on German aircraft, tactics, morale, and even possible war crimes. Luftwaff e pilots, often confi dent of victory, unwittingly provided key intelligence. The book off ers a compelling look at this crucial, lesser-known part of Britain’s wartime strategy and how intelligence-gathering shaped the outcome of aerial warfare in 1940.
• The methods of interrogation of Luftwaff e airmen from 1939 to the end of the 1940 are revealed.
• Examines the story of Franz von Werra, the only Axis PoW to succeed in escaping and make a Home Run in WW2.
• Shows how Air Intelligence built up a detailed picture of enemy pilots, aircraft, units and the general social situation around a unit or airfi eld community.

Christopher A Lawrence, Stefan Korshak
On 24 February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, marking Europe’s largest war since WWII. Early attacks targeted Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Kherson, with Mariupol – a key coastal city – quickly besieged. By 2 March, Russian forces encircled Mariupol, unleashing relentless artillery strikes that caused severe civilian casualties and a humanitarian crisis. Water, electricity, and food ran out, and evacuation eff orts largely failed. The Azovstal Iron and Steel Works became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance, described as a “fortress within a city.” The siege ended on 20 May with Russian control. The Siege of Mariupol captures the immediacy and gravity of the confl ict, documenting the resilience of defenders and the global uncertainty surrounding Ukraine’s fate.
• From their numerous contacts across the region, the authors have produced an account drawn from individual experiences on the ground in and around Mariupol.
• An in-depth analysis compiled from a wide range of sources.
• Demonstrates how morale, and conviction in a just cause, can outweigh military might.
• Explores key engagements and battles in this period of the war in Ukraine.

FROM UKRAINE TO MILITARY COUPS, THE STORY OF A MERCENARY ARMY BY ONE OF ITS SENIOR COMMANDERS
Ivan Dolvich
The Wagner mercenary group operated in Africa and the Middle East for years before gaining global attention during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Salikov testifi ed to the International Criminal Court, detailing atrocities in Ukraine and Syria, including child abductions and civilian executions ordered by Russian authorities. ONE MAN’S ROLE IN A RUSSIAN SPECIAL FORCES UNIT AND THE INVASION OF UKRAINE
Igor R Salikov
After the USSR’s collapse, the author joined Redut, a Russian mercenary group. As Putin rose to power, nationalist aggression targeted Chechnya and Georgia. In 2021, he commanded Redut’s GRU intelligence unit, working with defected Ukrainian agents on a failed mission to destroy Kyiv’s SBU headquarters. After fi erce fi ghting, Viper withdrew his platoon to Belarus, pursued by Russian counter-intelligence, and eventually escaped to Western Europe. Putin’s Viper Detachment is his fi rsthand account of covert warfare, betrayal, and survival, revealing the hidden war in Ukraine from the inside.
• With the collapse of the USSR in 1991, its armed forces were largely disbanded and the author – call sign ‘Viper’ – was discharged from the army, joining Russian mercenaries operating abroad.
• However, the rise of Putin ‘Viper’ was once again in Russian pay, this time leading a special forces group in operations in Donetsk.
• Viper was given a secret mission – to attack the headquarters in Kyiv of the Ukrainian Counterintelligence and Security Service ahead of Putin’s invasion. This is the story of that mission.

RUSSIA, POLAND AND THE OTTOMANS, CONFLICT OVER HEGEMONY, 1500–1800
Vladimir Shirogorov
This book explores the political, military, and social history of Eastern Europe, a region long shaped by imperial, national, and civil wars. Major powers – Ottomans, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and MuscovyRussia – clashed over Ukraine, a vast geopolitical zone stretching from the Danube to the Caspian Sea. Amid this turmoil, various “Ukraines” emerged – proto-states formed by military groups with shared strategic, social, and economic goals. It’s essential reading for those interested in warfare, empires, and Ukraine’s enduring struggle for sovereignty.

MEMOIRS OF A MERCENARY IN THE CONGO 1965–1967
Terry Norman
Set in the Congo during the 1960s, this narrative explores the violent aftermath of the country’s independence, a period marked by civil war, political upheaval, and international interference. Written in the third person with names changed for anonymity, the story opens with a foreword outlining the Congo’s descent into chaos, as competing factions –including foreign mercenaries – struggled for control of its vast natural resources and strategic infl uence. The story follows several key characters: Morgan, a seasoned mercenary confl icted by the moral weight of his actions; Brogan, a ruthless sergeant enforcing discipline with brutality; and Lagache, a Belgian plantation owner driven by revenge for his wife’s death at the hands of rebel leader Kimbiti. As these men navigate ambushes, battles, and personal dilemmas, they embody the larger questions of morality, survival, and humanity during wartime. The climax centers on a brutal assault on the rebel stronghold of Lukamba, involving ground and air forces. The battle is fi erce, with heavy losses, leading to a sobering refl ection on the futility of war. The story ends without resolution, emphasizing the emotional scars left behind and the enduring complexities of confl ict in a fractured nation torn between colonial legacies and Cold War interests.
• Set in the 1960s Congo, this fi rst hand account captures the political collapse and civil war that erupted after independence, worsened by Cold War tensions and foreign intervention.
• Morally Confl icted Mercenaries like ‘Morgan’ illustrate the psychological toll of war, torn between duty, profi t, and conscience in a lawless environment.
• ‘Brogan’s’ harsh treatment of recruits and the savage nature of the confl ict depict the raw violence and lack of accountability during this period.
WITH THE LONG RANGE DESERT GROUP IN NORTH AFRICA
David Lloyd Owen
In mid-1941, 24-year-old David Lloyd Owen joined the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) as a patrol commander. Quickly adapting to the harsh conditions of the Libyan desert, he mastered survival and navigation techniques, particularly using the sun-compass developed by the LRDG’s founder, Bagnold. His memoir vividly describes the camaraderie and methods of his Y Patrol, their reconnaissance missions, and occasional raids. The LRDG specialised in deep-desert intelligence gathering, operating in areas inaccessible to Axis forces due to their superior navigation and communication skills. Lloyd Owen also recounts the early collaboration between the LRDG and the newly formed SAS under David Stirling, whose joint operations played a vital role throughout the desert campaign.
A major task for the LRDG involved monitoring the coastal road to report enemy movement, with vital intelligence being relayed back to Cairo HQ. Y Patrol also participated in the 1942 Tobruk raid, where Lloyd Owen sustained severe injuries. His account portrays the demanding nature of their operations, executed by elite, disciplined soldiers, punctuated by rare moments of respite in wartime Cairo.
The Desert My Dwelling Place off ers an insider’s view of both the strategic and personal sides of the desert war, culminating in the Allied victory at El Alamein and the expulsion of Rommel’s forces from North Africa. Through triumphs and hardships, Lloyd Owen captures the spirit and sacrifi ces of the LRDG during one of WWII’s most challenging campaigns.
• First published in 1957, this is an essential early source book for the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG).
• Includes wider commentary on the progress of the battle for North Africa and the emergence and early days of two important Special Forces: the LRDG and the SAS.

Clever, charismatic and daring, Mathilde Carré lived up to the image of the intrepid female spy. Codenamed “The Cat”, she co-founded the largest intelligence network in Occupied France and inspired her recruits to fi ght a secret war against the Germans. Carré delivered priceless information to the Allies, and her commitment to their cause seemed beyond question. But her reputation hid a fl awed and volatile personality, driven by a deadly combination of personal ambition, vanity and jealousy. When she fell into enemy hands, Carré chose to save herself rather than her comrades, betraying her own agents. Becoming her captor’s mistress, she enjoyed a life of luxury in Paris and earned the respect of her new German masters. But when a secret aff air with a British agent led her to escape to London, Carré’s true intentions raised serious questions. How far could she be trusted, and where did her allegiances really lie? At her trial The Cat’s extraordinary exploits were fi nally revealed to the public, transforming a resistance hero into a fi gure of public hatred. Condemned to death, she remained fi ercely unrepentant to the end, presenting herself as a victim of circumstance rather than a willing traitor. Mathilde Carré was a fascinatingly complex and enigmatic character who worked for the French, British, Polish and German secret services and double crossed them all. The result of more than ten years’ research, this book is a story that poses questions about the boundaries between resistance and collaboration, and the power of myth and self-delusion.
• The most comprehensive and detailed biography of Mathilde Carré to date, drawing on extensive archival research in France, UK and Germany, and face-to-face interviews with those involved.
• Challenges the traditional perceptions of female agents as exclusively fearless and heroic, introducing “shades of grey” in the discourse on women’s resistance.
SURRENDER, LOYALTY, BETRAYAL AND HELL
Gautam Hazarika
This is the compelling story of Captain Mohan Singh of the 14th Punjab Regiment, the fi rst commander of the Indian National Army (INA) – a force born in the shadow of World War II, forged from Indian POWs, and backed by Japan in a bid to oust the British from India.
The INA’s journey was fraught with both idealism and betrayal. Singh, initially driven by the vision of Indian independence, broke with the Japanese when their true intentions became clear. His defi ance set the stage for Subhas Chandra Bose to take command in what became a pivotal, yet tragic, episode in India’s freedom struggle.
This is also the story of thousands of INA soldiers who perished in the jungles of Burma – of those who fought valiantly and those who died unseen from disease, starvation, and forced labour. It recounts Lt. M.M. Pillai’s daring escape from Singapore, and Warrant Offi cer John Baptist Crasta’s brutal captivity in Pacifi c labour camps, where over 10,000 Indian POWs perished. Subedar Chint Singh’s testimony at post-war war crimes trials brought Japanese atrocities to light.
Though the INA may have been a Paper Tiger in battle, it became a Propaganda Lion after the war, stirring nationalist sentiment and hastening Indian independence. Drawing on unpublished personal accounts and family interviews, Hazarika’s narrative is one of courage, betrayal, sacrifi ce, and the overlooked cost of loyalty.
This is history that deserves remembrance – and a call for overdue commemoration of its unsung heroes.
• History of the First Indian National Army (INA) recruited from Indian POWs to expel the British from India with Japan’s help.
• Double Cross in October 1942 by the INA men sent by the Japanese to infi ltrate India.

COMMISSARS OF FEAR
Boris Sokolov, Richard W Harrison
This book explores the chilling rise and fall of six Soviet secret police chiefs – from Dzerzhinskii to Abakumov – who enforced Stalin’s reign of terror. Combining two works by Boris V. Sokolov, this edition reveals how ordinary men became instruments of mass repression, only to be destroyed by the very system they served. Drawing on rare archival material, it’s a powerful examination of power, fear, and the tragic cost of serving a criminal regime from within.
• Research looks in detail at all six heads of the Soviet Police who became victims of the very system they served, executed as liabilities by the regime.
• Details how these chiefs were not inherently monstrous, but morally and intellectually average individuals shaped into criminals by the corrupting power of the totalitarian state turning ordinary men in to executioners.
• Extensive research with contributions from Russian archivists and source material from the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History (RGASPI).
• Numerous explanatory notes are added to help English-language readers unfamiliar with Russian historical, political, or cultural references navigate the text.

Michael Robert Ibbotson
The Falklands War, lasting only ten weeks, had a lasting impact on military technology worldwide and marked a pivotal shift in British aviation and naval warfare technology.
It was the fi rst major naval and air confl ict since the Second World War, featuring two capable forces clashing in open ocean. The British impressively deployed 115 ships 8,000 miles south with little warning, sinking an Argentine warship using a nuclear-powered submarine, a unique event. The British amphibious landing involved 28 Harrier jets against 112 enemy fi ghters, marking the fi rst air combat relying on vertical take-off aircraft. Early bombing was ineffi cient, but by war’s end, laser-guided bombs achieved precise strikes. Despite losses on both sides, British submarine use forced the Argentine navy to retreat.
• Explains how although Sea Harriers, Vulcan bombers and a single Chinook helicopter receive most of the limelight, the war would not have happened without a fl otilla of landing craft, swarms of lesser-known transport helicopters and the Belfast, Hercules, Nimrod, VC10 and Victor aircraft.
• Argues that the non-detonating Argentine bombs which supposedly ‘saved’ the Royal Navy had a surprisingly minor impact.

ANCESTRAL VOICES
Patrick Mileham
Patrick Mileham’s scholarly and well illustrated history of Britain’s cavalry regiments takes the story from early roots in Cromwell’s army, through their formation over 350 years ago during the reign of Charles II, and follows their history to the eve of the Second World War. He describes the part they played in Britain’s wars and in peacetime, and he shows their line of descent across the centuries. As he does so, he celebrates the extraordinary continuity of the cavalry spirit which endures as a powerful force in the cavalry regiments of today’s Royal Armoured Corps. Their history forms part of the fabric of British military and social life, and his authoritative study is the perfect guide. As well as recording the fascinating history of the cavalry regiments, and illustrating it in a sequence of striking and rare images, Patrick Mileham includes succession charts showing the complex sequence of amalgamations and disbandments which has shaped the cavalry to date. So his book is essential reading, both as a graphic account of cavalry and invaluable work of reference for anyone who has a special interest in the history of the cavalry and the British army.
• Fully illustrated complete history of the British cavalry regiments from the Restoration to last days of horsemounted operations.

• As a popular and capable heir apparent to the most powerful Empire in the world who died tragically young, Germanicus is a popular subject.
• His unexpected death at 33 years old immediately prompted accusations of foul play; speculation and conspiracy theories abounded and endure to this day. *
• Alessio Perry re-examines Germanicus’ short, dazzling life and particularly his death. Was he murdered and was his uncle (Emperor Tiberius) complicit in the crime?

TURNING POINT OF THE ANGLO-ZULU
Adrian Greaves
The two main Zulu War battles of Hlobane and Khambula were fought on 28 and 29 March 1879, with very diff erent outcomes. The fi rst ended in a humiliating debacle due to poor planning and reconnaissance, the latter saw the outnumbered British score the fi rst decisive British victory of the war. Adrian Greaves contends that this change in fortunes made Khambula the most important battle of the war, since it persuaded both Lord Chelmsford and the Zulu king, Cetshwayo, that the British could defeat the Zulus.
• Dr Adrian Greaves is one of the foremost authorities on the AngloZulu War
• Explains how previous accounts of the battle have been distorted by false reporting, false memory syndrome and authors’ ignorance of the sites and archaeological evidence.
• Reveals the lack of planning and reconnaissance, and poor command, that led to the debacle at Hlobane
• Exposes how the British commander, Col Wood (later Field Marshal, and VC), went missing for a day after Hlobane and falsifi ed his afteraction reports to cover his part in the reverse.

John Pike
The Thirty Years War, often called Europe’s fi rst world war, shifted warfare beyond diplomacy, involving colonial rivalry and modern war crimes. Ending with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, the confl ict saw no absolute victors, as war continued until complex peace treaties addressed human rights, religious tolerance, war laws, and colonial expansion. Featuring key fi gures like Mazarin, Oliveres, and Torstenson, this detailed analysis highlights Westphalia’s lasting impact on international law and diplomacy – crucial for understanding both historic and modern confl icts.
• Just causes of war – self-defence, removal of enemy, ‘Punishment’ – from Grotius, international jurist.
• Role of diplomacy in war.
• Law and statesmanship.
• Peace as prelude to war seventeenth century.

HISTORY, ORGANIZATION, WEAPONS AND EQUIPMENT
Gabriele Esposito
In 135 BC the First Servile War erupted, the fi rst of a series of confl icts that transformed the Roman Republic and led to the birth of the Roman Empire under Octavian. This bloody period of civil wars and slave revolts (most famously Spartacus’) involved many famous generals, including Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. Fighting to dominate Rome they simultaneously waged expansionist foreign campaigns. The author provides a detailed and lavishly illustrated description of the organization and equipment of the armies involved.
• In this period, the Romans spent almost as much time fi ghting each other as external enemies
• Discusses crucial developments in Roman armies in terms of organization, recruitment, tactics and, to a lesser extent, equipment.
• As the battles pitched similar armies against each other, generalship was a decisive factor and famous leaders were pitted against each other: Marius vs Sulla; Spartacus vs Crassus, Julius Caesar vs Pompey; Octavian (Augustus) and Agrippa vs Mark Anthony and Cleopatra.
• Illustrated with numerous colour pictures of replica weapons, armour and dress.

The battle of Coronel on 1 November 1914, when Rear Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock and ships of his 4th Cruiser Squadron were out gunned by the German East Asiatic Squadron under Vice Admiral Maximilian Graf von Spee, was the worst British naval disaster for more 100 years; two ships were lost with all hands, totalling more than 1,600 men, including Cradock; but a month later a force under Vice Admiral Doveton Sturdee was to exact revenge and the ships of the East Asiatic Squadron were sunk or scattered and von Spee and his two sons lost their lives. Tragedy and Revenge tells the dramatic story of these battles in both an illuminating and highly readable narrative.
• No serious book has been written about Coronel and the Falklands since the 1960s.
• The author has had access to Cradock’s papers and eye-witness statements, never before studied.
• A defi nitive account of these terrible engagements.

THE COLD WAR AND BEYOND
Norman Friedman
This book, with its incisive analysis of design and development, covers all postwar British-built carriers, including those in Commonwealth and foreign service, with the historical context, both operational and technical, explained in detail, as is the connection to larger British national concerns. It also covers the radical two-island layout of Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales – since imitated by the Chinese – and so brings the book absolutely up to date. Based largely on declassifi ed offi cial documents, both British and US, it is heavily illustrated with photographs, but also reproduces offi cial plans from the National Maritime Museum, many of which have never previously been published.
• A comprehensive history of the postwar development of British aircraft carriers.
• Contains all the sophisticated analysis for which the author is so well known.
• A superb collection of illustrations including detailed original plans.

DRIVING CHANGE IN NAVAL TECHNOLOGY 1900–1918
David Craddock
Reginald Bacon was no Drake or Nelson, yet in a naval career of four decades of critical change for the Royal Navy, he was a pivotal fi gure among Admiral ‘Jacky’ Fisher’s ‘fi ve best brains in the navy’ who revolutionised Britain’s naval warfi ghting capability between 1900 and the end of the First World War. This new biography traces Bacon’s remarkable career from his service as a fi fteen-year-old Midshipman to his three years in command of the Dover Patrol, and does justice to both the man – ‘the ablest and cleverest offi cer I have ever known,’ wrote Admiral of the Fleet Sir Henry Oliver – and to his remarkable input into so many aspects of the development of the Navy at a time of exponential change.
• The fi rst biographical account of a remarkable Admiral who did much to revolutionise the Royal Navy.
• Sets his life in the context of the naval technology of the period.
• Tells a story that both entertains, and illuminates a whole era of naval history.

Vincent O’Hara
The greatest naval confl ict in history was unquestionably that which took place during the Second World War. The geographical spread was global and involved dozens of nations, and it was a confl ict that involved more than 15,000 ships and 43.7 million tons of shipping, while some 570,000 lives were lost at sea. Vince O’Hara captures every aspect of that vast naval confl ict and provides a complete and panoramic single-volume history. He demonstrates to readers how the impact of the naval battles won by the Allies still reverberates today.
• Off ers a complete overview of the great naval events of World War II as well as coverage of all the navies involved in the confl ict.
• Covers such well known naval battles as Matapan, Denmark Strait, Midway, Guadalcanal, and Leyte Gulf as well as signifi cant but lesser known events.
• Proposes some unconventional interpretations on World War II naval warfare.

HMS TRIUMPH, SOE AND MI9 IN THE MEDITERRANEAN, 1941
Gav Don
The submarine HMS Triumph arrived in the Mediterranean in January 1941. Before and after the fall of Greece and Crete she played a key role, landing secret agents and rescuing escaping troops, while attacking Rommel’s supply lines and the Italian fl eet with gun and torpedo. Tragically Triumph’s story culminates in her disappearance with all hands in January 1942, on one last mission before a promised refi t. The discovery of her wreck in 2023 has allowed her fi nal patrol to be reconstructed in unprecedented detail.
• Follows the fi nal year of submarine HMS Triumph.
• HMS Triumph was very active in evacuating escapers and landing SOE and MI9 agents in occupied Greece and Crete.
• By Xmas 1941, Triumph was due to go home for a well-earned rest and refi t but on her last mission she disappeared until her wreck was found in 2023.
• Researched and recounted in meticulous detail, by Gav Don, nephew of Triumph’s gunnery offi cer and himself a former Naval Offi cer.

FROM JUSTINIAN I TO THE FOURTH
Augustine H Kobayashi
The author demonstrates the profound signifi cance of naval and maritime power to the remarkable longevity of the Empire of the Romans in the East. The imperial fl eet played crucial roles in the Empire’s reconquest of the West by Justinian I, its struggles against the Muslim Arabs, and its resurgence in the tenth and eleventh centuries.
The Byzantine navy not only provided critical logistical support to its armies, but played a key role in the reclamation of lost territories and the defence against formidable adversaries.
• Unique focus on the naval warfare of the Byzantine Empire and a compelling case for the importance of naval power in its long survival and ultimate demise.
• A highly readable narrative history of seven centuries of struggle for dominance/survival in the Mediterranean.
• Thoroughly researched analysis of the evolving naval strategy of the Byzantine Empire, drawing on contemporary sources and the latest modern scholarship.
• Discusses the importance of technological and tactical developments, notably the use of ‘Greek fi re’.

Peter Elliott
Looted! is a history of the lives and art collections of four French Jewish families, whose art was looted, and whose businesses were confi scated during the Nazi Occupation of France (1940-44). The story is of their lives, their businesses and art collections, and the journeys of their paintings during wartime and beyond. Each story of imagination, resilience and determination shows a diff erent facet of the Jewish French art collector experience during the Dark Years of Occupation.
“An essential contribution to the subject. Elliott has given life and voice to the most important and often forgotten: the people and the objects they collected. Particularly as time passes, these victims as real people must be present in the conversation, and the author has done that vividly. “ – Nicholas O’Donnell, author, A Tragic Fate – Law and Ethics in the Battle Over Nazi-Looted Art
“This book follows four families and reconstructs their Jewish culture. It off ers a fresh insight into the methods of the Nazi art looters and is a testament to the ravages of war and the motivation to preserve artistic creation. “ – Kenneth D. Alford, author, Hermann Göring and the Nazi Art Collection: The Looting of Europe’s Art Treasures and Their Dispersal After World War II – A history of the lives and art collections of four French Jewish families during the Nazi Occupation of France (1940-44).

“THE PASSIONATE CAUSE,” 1936–39
Chris Hall
For thousands of British, Irish and Commonwealth people, the Spanish Civil War was their primary focus for three years. Over 2,500 “British” men and women fought in the International Brigades or served in the medical services of the Spanish Republic. Many volunteers would go on to fi ght in the Second World War, and some became leading fi gures in post-war Britain. But for many volunteers, the Spanish Civil War was the “Passionate Cause” and the outstanding episode of their lives.
• What was Britain’s involvement in the Spanish Civil War?
• How did volunteers fi ght and serve in Spain?
• How did they support the “Passionate Cause” at home?

VOLUNTEER FORCES OF THE FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR 1870–1871
Mark Lause
International volunteers entered the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 in response to the call of Giuseppe Garibaldi’s Army of the Vosges to save a fledgling French Republic from the new Prussianized German Empire. Inspired by the lingering radical visions of 1848 and supported by elements of the First International of Marx and Bakunin, several thousand men (and women) came from neighbouring Spain, Italy, Belgium and Germany, as well as the Mediterranean societies and as far as the Americas to fight for a “universal republic”.

BREAKING THE NON-MILITARY CODES AT BLETCHLEY PARK AND BEYOND Harold Liberty
The work of the Military codebreakers at Bletchley Park is now rightly celebrated. Less attention has been given to non-military codes, and the organisations involved with them, yet their signifi cance on the development of the war is profound. This new account of the ‘other’ codebreakers draws on original documents from the National Archives and Bletchley Park to describe fully how the breaking of nonmilitary codes revealed the activities of diplomats, commercial groups, espionage rings, fi nancial and business interests, traders and smugglers.
• Examines the work of the nonmilitary codebreakers at Bletchley Park.
• These non-military codes revealed the activities of diplomats, commercial groups, espionage rings, fi nancial and business interests, traders and smugglers, impacting aspects of warfare such as raw materials, food, power supplies and transportation.
• The ability to read messages between neutral countries gave valuable indications of enemy intentions, issues and conditions.
• Sets the scene for the economic, diplomatic, sociological and even psychological struggle which was part of the war.

A ‘swan-necked beauty’ and muse to Frederic Leighton, Mary moved between art circles and crime with ease. Beloved and feared, her fall came with a child theft arrest in 1896. Tony Bostock
Born in 1578, Mary Fitton rose to prominence at Queen Elizabeth I’s court – intelligent, vivacious, and scandalous. She had multiple affairs, bore illegitimate children, narrowly avoided the Tower, and later married twice. Some believe she was Shakespeare’s mysterious ‘Dark Lady,’ a theory explored since 1890. This book examines Mary’s remarkable life, from court intrigue to family ties, alongside the debate over her role in the Sonnets and their authorship. A bold woman in a turbulent age, Mary’s story remains.
• Tells Mary Fitton’s story from her days at Gawsworth Cheshire in 1578 to her death in Perton, Staffordshire, in 1641, revising the previously presumed year of death as 1647 and her burial at Gawsworth as incorrect.
• Details her family connections, as well as her association with the Elizabethan court, Queen Elizabeth, her courtiers and Shakespeare.
• Unlike other books and articles that refer to the academic arguments about her and Shakespeare’s Sonnets, this book concentrates on her life as a Maid of Honour, mistress, wife and mother.
• Contains numerous quotations from letters along with probate and other official documents that refer to Mary.
• Features 23 images, including three of Mary, and another which the author suggests features her.

HER LIFE AND MUSIC
Yamily Habib
This is not just another biography – it’s a lyrical, investigative journey into the mind and music of Jo Mitchell. While countless writers have chronicled her life through the lens of fame, romance, or scandal, this book takes a radically diff erent approach: it listens.
Drawing from six decades of interviews, lyrics, public statements, and archival context, Chords of Inquiry weaves together Mitchell’s own words to construct a narrative that is as complex, poetic, and fi ercely honest as the artist herself.
• Weaves Joni Mitchell’s life story using her own words – drawn from six decades of lyrics, interviews, and public refl ections – off ering an intimate, fi rst-person lens rarely seen in music biographies.
• Combines lyrical prose with rigorous research, blending cultural history, gender politics, and musicology to paint a nuanced portrait of Mitchell’s artistry and the world that shaped her.
• Avoids gossip and sensationalism, instead centering Joni’s interior life, creative process, and emotional evolution across time.
• Explores how Joni’s music mirrored and resisted the sociopolitical tides of her era, including postwar gender norms, second-wave feminism, and the folk revival.

Although this is a general history of this multi-dimensional breed the name Border Collie never came into being till 1915. Yet always there was a supernatural Collie servant to farmers shepherds and the people of the land. This dog’s fate was spliced with our own in the battle to survive. Now from our modern perspective, we can see why the Border Collie can diversify into carrying out tasks other than gathering sheep. The beginning of the Border Collie came about on the Borders of England and Scotland when its canine ancestors arrived with the invading Roman legions out of the mists of antiquity. Our Search is deeper into why many say that Border Collies have the supernatural ability to know what their handlers are going to do next. Their sense to predict the movements of sheep or livestock is not limited by their working day. Many owners have commented that their Border Collies know extra things like if someone is not coming home or if there is something wrong. Yet these abilities may well be rooted in its hyper development through selective breeding when standard herding breeds in Britain were forged together to create this super dog. Much of the British economy during the 19th and 20th Century could not have happened without this stalwart servant of the people. The Border Collie has an inner super dog inside its black and white and multi-coloured coat driven not by aggression but by the unconditional love for its human family.
• The Border Collie’s whole reason for existence is born from its unconditional love of its handler; this book keeps pace with the diversity of the Border Collies’ breeding by making a multi-dimensional investigation into its history.
• Written through real-life documented experience of the author, who attended sheepdog trials at Austwick, North Yorkshire and had many experiences linked to exploring Patagonia, with insights into the shepherds.
• Includes the experiences of the sculptor Josefi na De Vanasconcellos MBE, who lived in the Langdale Valley, being inspired by shepherds and their Border Collies.
• Includes several interviews with actual shepherds and farmers as well as experts on the Border Collie.

Mary Poppins is a publishing phenomenon of eight books written across 55 years, translated into 20 languages, including Swahili. The 1964 Disney fi lm starring Julie Andrews remains one of the most popular children’s movies of all time. Yet the author did not want it to be known whether she was ‘man, woman or kangaroo’. The elusive PL Travers was, in fact, born in outback Australia in the penultimate year of the 19th century. Deeply spiritual, as one of the inner sanctum of the mystic GI Gurdjieff , she wanted to communicate through Mary Poppins more than carpet bags and parrot umbrellas. With new source material taken from interviews with PL Travers’ family and friends, this biography shares a new perspective on this extraordinary and complex author.

This book marks the bicentenary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway by focusing on the rolling stock – both passenger carriages and goods wagons – rather than locomotives. While the fi rst steam-hauled passenger train ran in 1825, regular service initially used horse-drawn coaches. Early travel was basic, with varying comfort levels across classes. The book traces the evolution of carriages from these humble beginnings to modern designs, covering special glamorous trains and everyday coaches. It also explores freight transport changes, from loose-coupled wagons to container trains, and refl ects on train travel experiences, including accidents. The volume concludes with a look at preserved railways that celebrate the steam era’s heritage.
• The story of 200 years of travel by rail.
• A unique blend that looks at both the changes in technology and the changes in passenger experiences.
• Good Pictorial Coverage with well researched text.
• New Information.
• Useful to Historians and Railway Modellers.

This book explores the tank engine designs of the three main companies that formed the Southern Railway, each with distinct policies. The London & South Western focused on suburban, branch, and heavy goods tank engines, while the London, Brighton and South Coast developed various designs for express passenger and mixed traffi c due to their shorter routes. The South Eastern and Chatham introduced the ‘River’ class but halted development after the 1927 Sevenoaks accident. Post-grouping, Southern Railway limited tank engine use to freight and shunting, with Bulleid’s innovative yet unsuccessful ‘Leader’ class. The book covers design, construction, and operation of these classes, concluding with the adoption of LMS and BR Standard tank engines in the Southern Region.
• Why didn’t the Southern build powerful mixed traffi c tank engines like the GW, LMS or LNER?
• Did a London Brighton and South Coast Atlantic Tank outperform a LNWR 4-4-0 on the West Coast Main Line?
• Was there really a lapse of 45 years between the fi rst and last withdrawal from the same class?
• Find the answers to these questions, and stimulate your modelling ideas as well!.

From humble beginnings in Blackwood, south Wales, in 1986, Manic Street Preachers have grown to become one of the UK’s biggest and most controversial rock bands. In their early years, they attracted intense press attention for their provocative statements, fi erce intellect, and uncompromising music. Following the shocking and tragic disappearance of lyricist Richey Edwards in 1995, the Manics recalibrated their sound and achieved mainstream international success including two UK #1 singles. The Manics have sold over 10 million albums and remain one of the UK’s most important and enduring cult bands. Manic Street Preachers: Song by Song is a comprehensive look at their unique and fascinating career, covering their fi fteen studio albums from Generation Terrorists, released in 1992, to Critical Thinking, released in 2025, along with all other studio recordings. It explores their changing sound and the many political, historical, and cultural references in their incendiary lyrics.
• The only book to cover all studio recordings from 1988 to 2025.
• Explores the many political, historical, cultural, and philosophical references in the band’s lyrics.
• Sets the songs into their proper context within the band’s history, and the era of recording.
• Caters to both established fans of the band and newcomers.

Genesis is one of the most successful British rock bands of all time. Their long and diverse career has not only allowed its three principal members – Phil Collins (vocals, drums), Mike Rutherford (guitars, bass) and Tony Banks (keyboards) – to pursue successful solo careers, it has also divided their fanbase. While some celebrate the band’s early years in the 1970s, characterised by epic rock classics like ‘The Musical Box’ and ‘Supper’s Ready’ and singer Peter Gabriel in his strange masks and costumes, others prefer their chart-topping period of the 1980s and early 1990s, when drummer Phil Collins had taken over the microphone and the band produced hits like ‘That’s All’, ‘Invisible Touch’ and ‘I Can’t Dance’. The common perception of this transition, however, that Genesis went from prog to pop, is wrong. Genesis have always been the most progressive of all the ‘progressive rock’ bands. Without losing their identity they survived the loss of Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett and went on to become one of the biggest bands on the planet. Genesis: Song by Song shows what Genesis is all about, analysing every track ever made, with additional commentary on music videos, album covers and reviews from across the band’s history.
• Draws on many illuminating interviews with band members over the years.
• Sets the record straight regarding myths and misinformation about the band’s career and who was responsible for their change in style.
• Analyzes the band’s lyrics and shows what shaped them.
• Demonstrates the huge variety of ideas that have shaped the band’s career.

In the past fi fty years Sparks have recorded over twenty-fi ve albums and a huge number of non-album tracks, demos and unreleased songs. Their music is characterized by the fact that it can hardly be characterized. There is little out there that can be compared to the Sparks sound, and where comparisons can be made, the artists behind the songs have often admitted to drawing their inspiration from the band. In this book every studio recording is discussed in unique detail, including demos and unreleased material. Those familiar with Sparks will instantly recognize each song as the band’s unique creation, though predicting how the next album or song will sound is an impossible task for even the most dedicated fan. This unpredictability and infi nite variety is one of the main characteristics of the work of the Mael brothers. Sparks: Song by Song is a comprehensive examination and uplifting celebration of their unique and extensive output.
• The fi rst publication to focus primarily on the music of Sparks.
• Incorporates a biography of the band into the history of their releases.
• Gives detailed information about every song ever produced by the band.
• Gives extensive attention to the non-album tracks, demos and unreleased songs.
• Includes a full list of concerts, dating back to 1967.

Before a solo career that has earned him twenty-two Top 10 albums, including six #1’s, Paul Weller was the frontman for The Jam and The Style Council. In the Jam, Weller, still a teenager at the time of their debut In The City, led a highly infl uential trio that bridged punk and new wave and earned four #1 singles and one #1 album in their short tenure (1977–1982). At the height of their success, Weller broke up the band, opting for a diff erent direction with The Style Council, which veered away from guitar-driven songs in favor of a jazz, soul, and pop sound. From 1983 to 1989, the band scored seven Top 10 singles and one #1 album in the UK. Long before he was known as “The Modfather,” Weller was a “spokesperson for a generation.” Perhaps this book serves as an overdue introduction for those unfamiliar with Weller, particularly in America. It chronicles Weller’s catalogue from The Jam’s debut through The Style Council’s last, rejected house album Modernism: A New Decade, including rarities, B-sides, and covers. It combines research with artist interviews done especially for this project, as well as occasional author anecdotes.
• In recent years, The Jam and The Style Council’s profi les have risen thanks to exhibits like ‘This Is The Modern World’, documentaries About The Young Idea and Long Hot Summers, and the podcast Desperately Seeking Paul.
• Includes backstories, artist insights, and musical references that add to the song specifi cs and give a background and view into Weller’s own music fandom.
• Personal insights by Style Council drummer Steve White off er an interesting and refreshing angle on the songs and Weller.

• Steve Pilgrim from Weller’s current band said recently: “If anybody’s got a list of the songs that Paul has written on all of his records from The Jam’s fi rst record through Fat Pop, I’d quite like an exclusive list.” This is that list and more.

When Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart attempted to rise from the ashes of their brief postpunk glory as members of The Tourists, the odds seemed drastically stacked against them. However, initial setbacks were not enough to stop their transformation into the powerhouse that became Eurythmics, one of the most successful pop duos of all time. In a career spanning several decades, always at the vanguard of evolving musical trends, they recorded over 100 original tracks including many experimental rarities and B-sides, constantly changing and progressing their sound. From cold electronics to soulful RnB and rock, the music of this dynamic pair lives on in the psyche of popular culture and sounds as fresh today as it did thirty years ago. A catalogue as diverse, innovative and impactful as that of Eurythmics absolutely deserves to be unpacked, celebrated and savoured – song by song. Enjoy.
• Few books have been published on Eurythmics in recent years and the band has been resurgent since the recent reissue of their albums on vinyl.
• Will appeal not only to Eurythmics fans but lovers of Annie Lennox and ’80s music generally.
• Written by an avid Eurythmics fan and collector of over 30 years.

The Who is one of the most energetic and infl uential bands in rock history.
Jamie Hailstone

Beginning as a mod band in London’s Shepherd’s Bush, they were shaped in character and style by the Pop Art movement of the Swinging Sixties. They pioneered the rock opera genre with Tommy (1969) and Quadrophenia (1973) before becoming a key infl uence for the punk revolution of the 1970s, establishing an energy and attitude that has resonated ever since. During a career spanning sixty years, The Who have released nearly 300 tracks, most during the period of their classic lineup (1964–1978) with lead vocalist Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townsend, bassist John Entwistle and drummer Keith Moon. On the one hand their songs are about sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, while on the other they reach much deeper, holding society to account on contemporary subjects, and in one example, the 1972 song ‘Relay’, imagining a futuristic network that has been credited as a prophesy of the internet. The Who: Song By Song is a forensic examination of every song in the band’s totemic discography, including diff erent versions and background facts. Find out what inspired the songs, how they developed, and what happened during the recording sessions of one of the greatest rock bands of all time.
• Alongside The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, The Who rank among the most successful and infl uential bands of the Sixties and beyond.

AN EXPLORATION AND CELEBRATION OF JAPAN’S MONSTER KING
Daniel DiManna
He’s iconic. He’s atomic. And at 70 years young, he’s still the King of the Monsters. Ever since his silver screen debut back in 1954, Godzilla has maintained a mighty hold on the collective imaginations of cinema lovers around the world. Originally conceived as a powerful metaphor for Japan’s fears of nuclear destruction, the character has undergone a complex metamorphosis over an incredible seven decades and more than three dozen fi lms. From allegory to superhero, from atom-age menace to children’s matinee star, from arthouse to grindhouse and back again, Godzilla has survived by adapting and reacting to the changing cultures and generational expectations of the countries – and the fi lmmakers – that bring him to life. In this exploration and celebration of Godzilla’s fi rst 70 years, the full story of Japan’s kaiju icon is revealed through detailed histories, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, cultural connections, and contextualising thematic analyses. Beginning with his postwar origins and continuing through his many rises, falls, revitalisations, and reinterpretations, this comprehensive companion to the Godzilla franchise seeks to place the character in his proper historical perspective and, by doing so, shed light on the depth, the fl exibility, and the fun that’s kept him relevant and beloved for generations.
• An up-to-date companion to the franchise that comprehensively explores the fi lms, TV shows, and spinoff s.
• The fi rst English-language history book to cover the recent critically acclaimed fi lm Godzilla Minus One.

BELOVED MAMA
PRINCESS ALICE, GRAND DUCHESS OF HESSE
Edited by John Van der Kiste
Princess Alice was born in 1843, the second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. She was a compassionate child and showed a keen interest in nursing from an early age. In 1862 she married Prince Louis of Hesse and the Rhine, a small German duchy soon to be impoverished by the defeat of its ally Austria in the 1866 Austro-Prussian War. During the confl ict Alice worked tirelessly as a nurse, and in the aftermath she helped establish several charities in the duchy to support the most in need. Her health soon deteriorated due to overwork and she never fully recovered from the tragic death of her two-year-old son Frederick William in 1873. Her interest in gynaecological matters caused a rift between her and her mother, and with her intellectual, questioning nature, she was saddened by her husband’s inability to share her interests. After nursing her children through diphtheria in the winter of 1878, she caught the infection herself and died at the age of thirty-fi ve.
Alice’s letters to her mother were originally published in 1884. This edition includes various appendices and commentaries published shortly after her death, and an afterword on the subsequent tragedies suff ered by several members of her family.

Edmund Gosse, author of the classic autobiography Father and Son, was appointed librarian of the House of Lords in 1904. Until 1906 he kept a diary of his experiences at Westminster. The manuscript, which has never been published before, is an unvarnished and highly entertaining account of the multitude of well-known characters he came across in Westminster, including Arthur Balfour, Herbert Asquith and Richard Haldane, who were his friends. It off ers an unrivalled inside view of parliament and its workings from the unique and privileged perspective of Lords librarian. The diary covers the end of the Conservative administration and the Liberal landslide in 1906, after which CampbellBannerman became prime minister. This edition includes an introduction and notes.
• An important and hitherto unpublished historical source for its period, of great value to academics and students. • Gosse was a revered literary fi gure in his day, a celebrity who moved in the same literary circles as his close friends Henry James and Thomas Hardy.
• The diary is vividly and entertainingly written and should appeal to the general reader as well as the specialist¬ – the reviewer of the fi rst biography of Gosse (1931) thought he would prove ‘an immortal diarist’.
• Because of Gosse’s literary status the book should interest literary scholars as well as historians.
Aubrey Malone
Ernest Hemingway created a style of writing that captivated a generation. Owing as much to music as it did to literature, it had a tonality that resonated like a drumbeat. Its hypnotic, incantatory nature was birthed under the mentoring eyes of Gertrude Stein and James Joyce during his literary apprenticeship and buff eted with the journalistic machismo of the hard-living, hard-drinking man of action he became afterwards. Despite the acres of words that have been written by and about him, Hemingway continues to elude biographers with his complexity. His fi rst wife, Hadley Richardson, said he was more complex than geometry. Aubrey Malone captures him in all his guises here – from boxer to braggart, hunter to hero, fi sherman to ‘dangerous’ friend. In the end, when he bagged his last trophy with a self-administered bullet to the head, he went against the ‘grace under pressure’ credo that had defi ned him for so much of his life. Ernest Hemingway: Flawed Genius investigates the man behind the myth, a writer who was a mystery even to himself.
• Draws on rare archival sources and personal memoirs to fi ll the gaps left by other biographers.
• Builds a uniquely incisive picture of the man – his relationships, his temperament, his macho persona, his extraordinary talent, his draconian work ethic – to show how and why his ever-dramatic path through life ended in its tragic crescendo.
• The product of several decades of research.

The English Electric/BAC Lightning, a product of Britain’s once-thriving aviation industry, is arguably the most iconic single-seat interceptor ever created. Those who remember its arrow-shaped form hurtling skywards love to regale anyone who will listen with tales of its incredible performance, eardrum-assailing reheat and near-vertical climbs.
The Lightning was advanced for its time and required considerable investment and research to take it from the drawing board to active service as an eff ective fi ghting machine. Signifi cant strides were made in the early years after the award of the contract – all of which could have come to nothing when it was deemed in the 1957 Defence White Paper that piloted aircraft had had their day. The design was saved only by its advanced stage of development; as is often the case in fl ight, turbulence is to be expected. But despite the obstacles put in its path, the Lightning prevailed to become one of Britain’s most admired and respected fast jets.
Taking the reader through the politics that threatened its development, its groundbreaking design, its service career and many other aspects of its extraordinary history, Lightning: From Inception to Preservation is a comprehensive study of Britain’s fi rst and only truly homegrown supersonic jet-powered interceptor.
• Contains previously unpublished accounts from pilots, ground crew and the pioneers of Lightning preservation.
• Includes little-known information from the squadron operation record books stored in the National Archives, giving an insight into the day-to-day workings of the Lightning-equipped units defending Britain’s skies.
• Richard Hall has owned a Lightning for over a decade and is an expert in aircraft preservation and the type’s history. He is part of a network including former pilots and ground crew who have given him valuable insight into how the Lightning was operated and maintained.

During its short life, the rocket interceptor, a concept that reached maturity towards the end of the Second World War, attracted the attention of top scientists, designers and aeronautical engineers in Germany, the USSR, the United States and Japan. It was universally agreed that an interceptor capable of fl ying 300 mph faster than any other aircraft would give the wielding power untouchable aerial superiority. However, this new technology was unable to adapt to the realities of war.
The complexity of the propulsion system and the need to develop new aerodynamic concepts were challenges too great for the aeronautical industries of the major powers at the time, which specialized in the mass construction of piston fi ghters. Nor were fi ghter pilots able to adapt to the high-G combat conditions that came with achieving speeds of nearly 900 mph; it was simply not possible for them to aim and fi re.
In 280 immaculate technical drawings, each set within its historical context and with full performance specifi cations, Rocket Interceptors 1941–1947 presents 125 project, prototype and combat rocket-powered aircraft developed by Germany, the United States, the USSR and Japan in the 1940s, though initial development for some can be traced as far back as the 1920s. This is the last word on a technology that, had it been properly harnessed, might have changed the course of the Second World War.
• Presents 125 project, prototype and combat rocket-powered aircraft developed by Germany, the United States, the USSR and Japan in the 1940s.
• Immaculately illustrated with 250 black and white and 30 colour technical drawings.
• Includes full development and performance details for each aircraft.
• Authored by a professional technical illustrator and advisor to the Spanish Air Force Museum.
• Will appeal to aviation and military historians, modellers, gamers and fl ight simulator enthusiasts.

Designed at the start of the 1960s, the Short SC.7 Skyvan had to overcome considerable challenges – including two engine changes – before it was accepted by operators, but overcome them it did, laying the foundations for a family of aircraft that remained in production until 1992. Used for both cargo and passenger transport, and more recently a favourite of skydivers, the Skyvan’s overtly boxy shape has earned it many nicknames from the ‘Shoebox’ to the ‘Flying Shed’. This book delves into the origins of the design and its development through several versions, including some design studies that were never built. It includes a thorough survey of Skyvan operators, both civil and military, a look at what it’s like to fl y, and an assessment of its safety record. Also included is a photographic walk-around of the main features of the design, which will be of interest to scale modellers.
With many previously unseen photographs and drawings, this is the most comprehensive history of the Skyvan ever published, and the fi rst in an exciting new series on aviation workhorses.
• Nicknamed the ‘Shoebox’ and the ‘Flying Shed’, the notoriously ugly Short SC.7 Skyvan is one of the most recognisable, and ubiquitous, aircraft out there.
• Fills a major gap in the market – no dedicated history of the type has appeared since the 1970s and nothing in as much detail – this is the most comprehensive history of the Short SC.7 Skyvan ever published.
• Illustrated with many rare and previously unseen photographs, of use to modellers.
• Features a full development history, including planned variants that were never built.
• Describes the wide variety of diff erent uses for the Skyvan – a hugely popular aircraft across the globe.
• Comes with a dusting of Hollywood glamour, the aircraft having starred in Kingsman: The Secret Service.
