2026 marks the centenary of the births of two unforgettable female icons: Queen Elizabeth II and Marilyn Monroe — who, fun fact, even met each other once! Crowned: Coronations from Queen Victoria to King Charles III takes readers inside Elizabeth II’s 1953 Coronation, a moment that united the nation while stirring a royal scandal. Meanwhile, Nobody’s Perfect: The Making of Some Like It Hot pulls back the curtain on Marilyn Monroe, revealing how she balanced her star persona with the personal and professional pressures of filming.

Music lovers can dive into Fonthill’s Song by Song series, which offers in-depth, track-by-track analyses of iconic artists’ careers — from studio recordings to hits and rare gems. Sing along with legends like Paul Weller, Bob Dylan, P!nk, Simple Minds, Donna Summer, and Crowded House, discovering the stories behind every track.

White Owl’s video game list keeps levelling up, and this time The History of Resident Evil is holding the controller. Every mainline game, spin-off, remake, and juicy piece of lore from 1996 to today is explored in full — think of it as a cheat code for hardcore fans. Other unlockable titles include The Tetris Story, Aliens: The Video Games, Doom Video Games, and more, packed with nostalgia, epic moments, and high scores guaranteed to please both longtime players and new recruits.

Military History highlights are equally compelling. The Silent War tells a deeply personal story of survival through brutal combat zones and the PTSD that followed, capturing what war takes and the quiet, defiant choice to keep going. Op TELIC 9 – Arnhem in Basra offers a uniquely honest perspective on Iraq, making it a must-read for all generations and a lesson in resilience and endurance.

Frontline Books brings gripping true stories to the catalogue. Goering’s Suicide: ‘They Will Not Hang Me!’ reveals the hidden truth behind Hermann Goering’s final days before the Nuremberg trials. No Ordinary Neighbour tells the remarkable story of Erwin Stahlberg, a seemingly ordinary neighbour whose wartime secrets remained hidden for eighty years — until he finally entrusted them to the author.

For anyone keen to uncover their family history, we’ve got you covered. Tracing Your Victorian Ancestors is clear, accessible, and packed with practical tips — the perfect companion for exploring your roots in Victorian Britain. Or take a deep dive with Tracing Your Ancestors Using Newspapers, a step-by-step guide to unlocking hidden stories from the past — from court cases and military records to lost pets and personal triumphs — complete with real examples and resources for researchers of all levels.

BEAUFIGHTER

the

ALLies’ muLti-roLe combAt AircrAft

The Bristol Type 156 Beaufighter defined the modern multi-role combat aircraft, serving as a night fighter, anti-shipping strike aircraft, maritime air superiority fighter, and ground-attack platform. Despite its hurried design as a heavy fighter, it transformed RAF night defences and Coastal Command operations. Highly effective in every theatre, it served with the RAAF, USAAF, and Allied forces, disrupting Axis logistics across Europe, the Mediterranean, and the jungles of Burma and New Guinea. Beaufighter explores the aircraft’s crucial role in radarequipped night operations, shipping interdiction, and key campaigns, showing how this once-awkward design became one of Britain’s most versatile and successful wartime aircraft, influencing events from the Blitz to operations affecting Stalingrad and even the path to Indian independence.

• Explores the aircraft in the context of a global conflict, and how it worked to take on so many roles where the RAF was failing.

• The book explores the sheer, usually bloody, excitement that came with the Beaufighter – covering both wellknown and obscure actions.

• Includes the story Welsh ace Alwyn Downing’s solo nocturnal massacre of a critical air convoy of Junkers Ju 52s near Tunis; he claimed five, yet Luftwaffe records show eight went down.

DUNKIRK AND BATTLE OF BRITAIN TOP GUN

WW2 Ace PiLot officer WiLLiAm mcknight

Shelly McElroy

In February 1939, 21-year-old William Lidstone McKnight left his medical studies in Alberta to join the RAF on a Short Service Commission. Flying with No. 242 Squadron, he scored his first victory, a Messerschmitt 109E, on 19 May 1940. By June he had destroyed nine enemy aircraft, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, and later a Bar for further victories. Under Squadron Leader Douglas Bader, McKnight claimed 23 enemy aircraft, becoming Canada’s leading ace. On 12 January 1941, during a low-level Rhubarb sortie over Pas-de-Calais, he went missing in action. This biography explores both ‘Willie’, the skilled fighter pilot, and ‘Bill’, the young man navigating a violent, transformative era.

• This is the first biography of the most outstanding Canadian fighter pilot in the first half of WW2.

• Awarded 16.5 confirmed ‘kills’ in just eight months.

• Was a leading RAF Ace of the Dunkirk Evacuation and the leading Canadian fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain.

THE LUFTWAFFE’S LAST BOMBER OFFENSIVE

oPerAtion steinbock, 1944

Operation Steinbock, called the ‘Baby Blitz’ by the British, was the Luftwaffe’s last major air offensive against the UK, launched January–May 1944 under Generalmajor Dietrich Peltz. Targeting London, Bristol, Hull, and Portsmouth, the raids faced severe Luftwaffe shortages of aircraft, fuel, and trained crews. Losses were catastrophic: over 500 aircraft, 63% of those committed, were destroyed or damaged. Despite 1,556 deaths, the raids caused limited damage and had little effect on British morale or industry. Steinbock highlighted the Luftwaffe’s declining power and marked its final sustained strategic bombing of the UK, demonstrating the futility of offensive operations under Allied air superiority.

• Explores the background to why the operation was launched by the Luftwaffe.

• Examines how Steinbock unfolded and whether it achieved any of its aims, as well as the RAF’s response.

• Profusely illustrated throughout by an unparalleled selection of wartime images, many never published before.

THE LIGHTWEIGHT MUSTANGS

the best fighters of WW2

After America entered World War II, the USAAF sought fighters capable of long-range missions over Europe and the Pacific, focusing on extending the range of tactical aircraft. The P-51 Mustang and Lockheed P-38J were developed to escort bombers, following disastrous raids on Schweinfurt in 1943 using short-range P-47 Thunderbolts. Improvements led to Lightweight Super Mustangs with bubble canopies and Packard V-1650 engines, producing agile, powerful fighters arguably superior to contemporary Spitfires. This book details the P-51’s evolution and final production model, the P-51H, while addressing myths such as the ‘Bomber Mafia conspiracy’, revealing how the United States ultimately created one of the war’s most effective long-range single-seat fighters.

• Reveals how weight comparisons of the P-51B against the Spitfire IX led to the XP-51F Lightweight Mustang.

• Describes the differences between escort missions and offensive fighter missions.

• Shows how the extremely lightweight Mustangs were impressive fighters that were arguably better than any Spitfire then in service.

FATAL FLIGHTS OF THE RICH AND FAMOUS

Alastair Goodrum

The theme of this book is to recall some of the perils of twenty-three internationally-famous celebrity air travellers between 1919 and 2020. Supported by high quality, previously unpublished images, the stories here showcase aeroplanes from the golden age of biplanes to helicopters, biz-jets and airliners. They also illustrate the fallibility of people and technology, while demonstrating the social progress of air transport over the past century. Sadly, the climax of these particular stories culminates in air crashes that took the lives of the celebrities involved.

• What does a mild-mannered Swedish diplomat have in common with a raffish English Formula One World Champion? The answer is that they and twenty-three prominent international celebrities, died in aeroplane accidents between 1919 and 2020, at the height of their fame and often in mysterious circumstances.

• This book brings together the stories of celebrity air accident victims from a wide spectrum of genres, explaining how they became famous, and then how their lives at the top of the tree became fragile, vulnerable and ultimately doomed.

• Previously unpublished information sheds new light on their fascinating stories, dispelling some of the myths and mysteries surrounding their lives and deaths.

THE DEATH RAILWAY IN NUMBERS

the humAn trAgedy of the thAiLAnd-burmA rAiLWAy in WW2

Between May 1942 and October 1943 Allied prisoners of war built and maintained the railway linking Thailand and Burma. The Death Railway in Numbers uses figures to show how many men worked on it, how many died, the line’s total length, and the number of stations and work camps along the route. The book records how often Allied bombers attacked the railway and even how Japanese soldiers were injured by elephants.

Daily life is revealed through numbers. Prisoners struggled through mud during monsoon periods, walked long distances to work sites, and laboured for hours during the oppressive ‘speedo’ period. They cleared vast quantities of earth, rock, and jungle before returning to camp. Figures highlight the harshness of Japanese engineers and guards, and the scale of suffering endured by the men under brutal conditions.

Numbers also illuminate moments of dark humour and irony. Prisoners dressed as women to embarrass a Japanese guard, and some senior Allied officers were invited to lavish meals while others survived on starvation rations. By combining figures with first-hand accounts, the book shows both the enormous physical effort required to build the railway and the deliberate cruelty imposed by the guards. The statistics make clear the full scope of human suffering, the endurance of those who survived, and the shocking cost of this engineering project. They help readers grasp the scale of this remarkable and tragic episode, where the numbers themselves reveal more than words alone could convey.

• By the end of WW2, over 100,000 prisoners and civilians had died during its construction.

• Covers all aspects of the railway, from its construction, to use, attacks by Allies and post-war fate.

• Supported by individual stories of suffering and resilience.

• Written by a renowned expert in the field who had full access to the archives of the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre in Kanchanaburi, Thailand.

THE GLOSTERS IN THE KOREAN WAR

from mobiLisAtion to the bAttLe of the imJin river And beyond

On 25 June 1950 North Korea invaded South Korea, prompting a rapid United Nations response. Britain committed ground forces, including the 1st Battalion, The Gloucestershire Regiment. The Glosters in the Korean War traces the battalion from its warning for deployment in Colchester in 1950, through training, arrival in Korea, combat service, and the return of its last prisoners of war in 1953.

In February 1951 the Glosters, serving with the 29th British Independent Infantry Brigade, were committed to heavy fighting during the UN advance north. They led the assault to retake Hill 327 from Chinese forces, helping to restore the UN line. Only weeks later, during the Chinese Spring Offensive in April 1951, the battalion faced its most severe test. On 22 April, three divisions of the Chinese 63rd Army, more than 27,000 troops, attacked across the Imjin River. The Glosters, numbering just over 700 men, were ordered to hold a front of roughly five miles.

For three days they withstood repeated infantry assaults, sustained artillery fire and close combat. By the time withdrawal orders were issued, their positions were nearly encircled. Although most were unable to break out, their stand delayed the Chinese advance and allowed UN forces time to reorganise and stabilise the front north of Seoul.

The cost was heavy. Of the 620 men engaged, many were killed or wounded and more than 500 were taken prisoner. For this action the battalion received the United States Presidential Unit Citation, an award rarely given to non-American units.

• Details events from the battalion’s mobilisation through to deployment and training in theatre

• Over 500 men from 1 Glosters were taken prisoner – the book reveals the experiences they endured prior to release and return home.

SPORTSPEOPLE ON TITANIC

Among those aboard RMS Titanic when it struck an iceberg on the night of 14/15 April 1912 were at least thirty passengers with notable connections to sport. Collectively, they had participated in twenty two major spectator sports, including the Olympic Games and numerous national championships in Great Britain and the United States. Drawn from all walks of life—aristocrats, business figures and ordinary travellers—many had already achieved distinction in disciplines such as boxing, swimming, motor racing, baseball and American football. Tragically, a significant number did not survive.

One prominent passenger was Karl Howell Behr, a leading lawn tennis player, Davis Cup representative and Wimbledon finalist. Among the women on board was Lucile Carter, a pioneering sportswoman who became the first woman to play polo astride rather than side saddle and who also competed in coach and four racing.

Several survivors went on to enjoy remarkable sporting careers despite their ordeal. These included a young boy whose father fought for his place in a lifeboat, who later became a celebrated golfer, playing more than 1,000 courses worldwide, and earning a mention in Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Another was a lawn tennis player who narrowly avoided the amputation of both legs due to frostbite, but through determination regained full use of them and subsequently won Olympic gold.

In Sportspeople on Titanic, James Bancroft traces the lives of these sporting figures before the voyage, their actions during the ship’s final hours, and the extraordinary paths taken by those who survived—or the legacy left by those who perished.

• This is the story of some 30 or more people who were on Titanic that night and who have connections to various sports.

• Between them, these individuals had been involved in 22 major spectator sports, including the Olympic Games.

• Sports featured include as tennis, football, boxing, swimming, motor-racing, golf, baseball and American Football.

WELLINGTON ON NAPOLEON

the duke’s commentAry on nAPoLeon’s disAstrous 1812 invAsion of russiA

The Duke of Wellington rarely wrote about his campaigns, famously comparing them to the “history of a ball” and discouraging attempts to publish such works. By 1825, however, he began researching Napoleon’s 1812 Russian invasion, purchasing books and studying them closely. He wrote a 25,000-word memorandum, criticising every decision from Smolensk to Borodino, blaming Napoleon entirely, and proposing his own alternatives. Despite the scale of the work, it was never intended for public view and circulated only among a small group of friends. Publicly, Wellington praised Napoleon, but privately he condemned him, and this book now reveals those private views in full, showing how Wellington shifted from admiration to damning appraisal.

• Includes an in-depth explanation of Wellington’s memorandum and the meanings behind his criticism, going through the work step-by-step to describe the arguments.

• Uses Wellington’s own writing which has been largely ignored by historians, publishing a view that was kept hidden from the public by Wellington himself.

• Draws extensively on primary sources from archives to describe the context of the work.

THE SPANISH ARMADA FROM THE SPANISH PERSPECTIVE

the tudors’ greAtest nAvAL victory

J J Herrero Giménez

The Spanish Armada From The Spanish Perspective examines the 1588 campaign from Spain’s viewpoint for the first time in English. Drawing on contemporary Spanish accounts and modern histories, it details the Armada’s organization, composition, and seven fleets, and profiles commanders including the inexperienced Duke of Medina-Sidonia. The book covers the five battles off Plymouth, Portland, the Isle of Wight, and Brulotes (Calais), and the harrowing return along Scotland and Ireland, where many sailors perished. It explores the fate of prisoners, lists fallen commanders such as Juan Martínez de Recalde and Miguel de Oquendo, and considers the wider consequences. The work reassesses the Armada’s defeat, the role of weather, and Spain’s postcampaign recovery, offering a balanced perspective contrasting traditional English narratives of Drake and the Royal Navy.

• The Spanish Armada was a Spanish fleet that sailed from Lisbon in late May 1588, with orders to participate in the overthrow of Queen Elizabeth I.

• This victory is one of the turning points in English history, and it was perhaps the defining episode in the long reigns of Elizabeth I of England and Philip II of Spain.

Napoleon’s Officers: Uniforms and Equipment provides the most complete study of the dress of the Grande Armée’s staff in over 200 years. Using period regulations, archival records, contemporary illustrations, and original uniforms, the book details generals, adjutants, secretaries, aides-de-camp, ordnance officers, couriers, topographical officers, war commissioners, and inspectors of review. AFTER THE BATTLE

GERMAN OCCUPATION & FRENCH RESISTANCE

resistAnce And LiberAtion 1944 then And noW

By early 1944, the French Resistance had grown in strength and unity under the FFI, though only 10 per cent were armed. After Special Forces reports, large airdrops of weapons began in June, July, August, and September. FFI forces, numbering 5,000 at Mont Mouchet and elsewhere, fought German attacks. In June, the FFI seized Tulle, provoking the 2. SS-Panzer-Division to hang 99 men and kill 642 at Oradoursur-Glane. Rail sabotage and attacks on communications increased after D-Day, while German reprisals murdered civilians across France. The Vercors plateau stronghold saw 8,000–10,000 German troops attack under Operation Bettina, destroying villages like Vassieux. Resistance actions aided Allied advances in the south-west, Brittany, and Provence, later joining the French Army to support the liberation of France and final victory over Germany.

• Told through Then and Now comparison photographs that bring history to life, this book tells the story of the liberation of France.

• Many civilians were murdered throughout the Vercors, villages were burned, and Vassieux was one of the four war crimes cases submitted by France to the International Tribunal at Nuremberg.

THE BATTLE FOR BRITTANY

the tAking of brest, 1944 – then And noW

In August 1944, the Third US Army swiftly captured the Brittany peninsula, forcing German forces into Lorient, St Nazaire, and Brest, where they could only await siege operations. Key ports remained unusable: St Malo was destroyed beyond repair, and Nantes suffered extensive demolition. VIII Corps launched a six-week siege on Brest, culminating in Generalleutnant Ramcke’s surrender on 19 September. American casualties totalled 9,831, while 38,000 Germans were captured, including over 20,000 combat troops. Reconstruction of Brest was abandoned on 13 September due to the extensive damage. The Allies faced a serious port shortage until Antwerp became available in November. Though three divisions and supplies were tied up at Brest, this had minimal effect on the advance beyond the Seine, as the main effort continued unhindered.

• Told through more than a hundred ‘Then and Now’ comparison photographs.

• By pinpointing for the first time, the locations where so many photographs were taken, this book will allow the reader to walk in the footsteps of the heroes of this great moment in history.

THE BATTLE OF CHERBOURG

first ALLied victory in normAndy

Jean Paul Pallud

SHAEF planners aimed to secure deepwater ports to supply hundreds of thousands of troops, with Cherbourg on the Cotentin Peninsula a key target. On 6 June, paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions landed to secure exits and Douve River crossings. By 10 June, Carentan was captured, linking with Omaha Beach. VII Corps advanced, isolating the peninsula; by 18 June, the 9th Infantry Division reached the west coast, joined by the 4th, 9th, and 79th Divisions. General von Schlieben refused to surrender, demolishing the port. VII Corps assaulted on 22 June, capturing Fort du Roule on 26 June; remaining forts fell by 29 June. VII Corps suffered 22,000 casualties; Germans lost 39,000 prisoners. Cherbourg was heavily damaged, usable by mid-August.

• This is the story of the capture of Cherbourg, the first Allied victory in Normandy, told through more than a hundred ‘Then and Now’ comparison photographs.

• The book really brings history to life.

THE FRENCH SAS IN HOLLAND

oPerAtion ‘Amherst’, the LAst Airborne oPerAtion of WW2

Karel Margry

On the night of 7/8 April 1945, 700 men of the 3rd and 4th French SAS Battalions parachuted into north-eastern Holland to support the First Canadian Army’s advance to the North Sea by creating confusion behind German lines and capturing vital bridges. Dropped from high altitude in strong winds, many landed off target, yet they quickly regrouped. They laid ambushes, attacked headquarters, and seized bridges. Relief was expected within 72 hours, but some held out until 14 April.

The SAS claimed 269 Germans killed, 70 wounded, 187 captured, 29 vehicles destroyed, and three railway lines cut. French losses were 33 killed, 35 wounded, and 92 missing, almost a quarter of the men, making Amherst a costly and daring operation.

• It is an account illustrated with a remarkable collection of rare combat photos, each of them accompanied by their present-day comparisons – the format for which After the Battle is famous.

• The exploits of the SAS in WW2 are rightfully legendary, but few people realise that nearly half of the SAS Brigade was in fact made up of French soldiers.

• Reveals that this was the only action where the two French SAS units were deployed side by side in one single undertaking.

STALINGRAD SURVIVOR

A memoir of cAPtivity 1943–1946

Introduction by Nik Cornish

These startling memoirs offer a rare insight into the experiences of a prisoner of war within the brutal Russian camp system. The book begins with the capture of Austrian infantryman Wolfram ‘Wolfie’ Redler amid the chaos following the fall of Stalingrad. It recounts the forced march eastwards and Redler’s transportation to Siberia during the merciless Russian winter. Stricken with typhus, he somehow manages to survive this ‘death camp’. The story continues with his transfer to a labour camp, describing in harrowing detail the deprivations endured by Redler and his comrades. That he, or anyone, was able to survive is nothing short of a miracle. Brutality, starvation, disease, and hard labour took their toll on over ninety per cent of the troops who were captured in those first few months of 1943.

Translated into English for the first time, this honest and unflinching account is a stark reminder of the cruelty of war. However, the great lesson of this book is not how we die, but how we live. Despite the suffering he witnessed and endured, ‘Wolfie’ remained a man who showed everyone around him what it truly means to live.

• Provides a unique account of an Austrian soldier’s time as a Soviet prisoner of war – a point of view rarely covered in Western sources.

• First English translation of a book first published in 1975 akin to classic books of that era, including Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s The Gulag Archipelago, although Redler’s book is significantly shorter and more readable for the average audience.

• For Soviet experts who do not read German, this translation will provide a fresh perspective of life in the gulags.

• Will appeal to readers interested in stories of survival, scholars of European and Russian history, military historians, anyone interested in World War II, and members currently serving in the military.

Karl Knoblauch Foreword by Robert Forczyk

‘A well-written and rewarding memoir that provides keen insight into the mindset of a patriotic young man willing to make sacrifices for his country.’ — Robert Forczyk

In this masterful two-volume account, Prussian solider and officer Karl Knoblauch draws on his wartime diaries to detail his fascinating military career during the Second World War. In this first volume, he recounts the years leading up to the outbreak of the war through to 1944.

In 1938, just before the outbreak of war, a 17-year-old Karl Knoblauch volunteered for military service and began his career as an infantryman before joining the air force as aircrew. Later, Knoblauch was seriously wounded in a Russian fighter attack over Wjazma and had to leave his squadron. After recuperating, he returned to the frontline as an officer in the ‘Hermann Göring’ Division, where this first volume comes to a close. Knoblauch describes his experiences in sober and stark detail, creating a gripping and comprehensive first-hand account of his time fighting for the Wehrmacht. Supplemented by several photographs and appendices, this is a must-read for any military history enthusiast.

• The first of two volumes of Karl Knoblauch’s wartime memoirs, translated into English here for the first time.

• An incredibly detailed look at the first few years of the Second World War, seen through the eyes of a Prussian soldier and officer.

In this second of two impressive volumes, Prussian solider and officer Karl Knoblauch describes his military career during the final stages of the Second World War. This volume picks up where the first book left off, with Knoblauch’s experiences as an officer in the 2nd Parachute Panzer Fusilier Battalion ‘Hermann Göring’. His account takes readers through the highs and lows of his time in this armoured Luftwaffe division, from 1944 through to the death of Hitler, Knoblauch’s capture and time as a PoW, and the end of the war. Supplemented by fascinating photographs and a detailed set of appendices, this volume brings Knoblauch’s epic first-hand account of fighting for the Wehrmacht to a fascinating close. Together with the first volume, this is a must-read for any military history enthusiast.

• The second of two volumes of Karl Knoblauch’s wartime memoirs, translated into English here for the first time.

• Covers Knoblauch’s time in the ‘Hermann Göring’ Division from 1944 to the death of Hitler, including his time as a POW.

THE LITTLE GUN THAT LED THE BLITZKRIEG

the rise of the germAn 3.7cm Anti-tAnk gun

Jacek Zabielski

Often overlooked beside Germany’s famous panzers, the Kfz. 13 and Kfz. 14 scout cars quietly shaped the birth of German armoured warfare. Built when tanks were forbidden, these lightly armed “Bathtubs” trained crews, tested doctrine, and gave industry vital experience. Though obsolete by 1939, their influence lived on in the soldiers and ideas that drove Blitzkrieg. This book delivers the first full history, blending technology, operations, and rare imagery to illuminate an essential but forgotten chapter of mechanised warfare development.

• First in-depth exploration of early German armored scout car development.

• Insight into crew training, organisation, and early mechanised doctrines of Reichswere and Wehrmacht.

• Extensive visual and historical documentation including over 200 images.

SPARTACUS AND ROME’S SERVILE WARS

Sotirios F Drokalos

The famous revolt of gladiators and slaves led by Spartacus is often cast in ideological terms, frequently removed from the actual political, social, and economic context in which it happened and portrayed as a symbol of freedom and a precursor of modern revolution. However, the views of ancient historians and the Italian peninsula’s populations who experienced the uprising were very different. This book examines the three slave wars of the Roman era in their historical context, offering a balanced and critically informed account.

• Covers all three Servile Wars (slave revolts) fought by Rome, the most famous being the Third, involving Spartacus.

• From the fields of Sicily and the mines of Laurion, to the gladiator schools of Capua, the book explores the conditions that sparked the revolts, the tactical successes of the insurgents, and the fierce Roman response that ultimately crushed them.

• Sets these events in the wider context of social, political and economic upheaval of the late Roman Republic.

• Challenges commonly held myths and perceptions by viewing these events through the lens of the ancient sources and evidence rather than modern sensibilities and political ideology.

THE SONS OF POMPEY THE GREAT

gnAeus PomPeius the younger And sextus PomPeius Lee Fratantuono

After the death of their father in 48 BC, the sons of Pompey carried on the struggle against Julius Caesar in Spain, Africa, and Sicily. In 45 BC they were defeated at Munda and Gnaeus was killed but Sextus escaped to Sicily and fought the Caesarian faction for a further decade. Sicily became a secure stronghold, supporting his powerful fleet in far-flung operations until finally caught and executed in 35 BC. Lee Fratantuono skilfully narrates the role of the sons of Pompey in these dramatic events.

• After Pompey the Great’s death, his sons continued the war against Caesar and his faction for over a decade.

• The brothers were on the losing side against Caesar at Thapsus and again at Munda, where Gnaeus was killed.

• Sextus escaped to Sicily, built a formidable fleet and allied with Caesar’s assassins against the Second Triumvirate.

• Sextus defeated Octavian (the future Augustus) at Messina (37 BC) but was defeated by Agrippa and eventually caught and executed without trial in 35 BC.

COAL SHIP!

hoW bLAck diAmonds trAnsformed the royAL nAvy 1830–1918

The vast British fleet that helped deliver victory in the First World War was one largely fuelled by coal. During the preceding century, the burgeoning industrial revolution, and the Royal Navy that emerged, had become wholly dependent on the precious ‘black diamonds’. Free wind was replaced by expensive coal; ships became faster, their offensive capabilities more devastating and the Royal Navy’s control of the seas of Britain’s growing empire undisputed. Steve Dunn describes how coal, at the heart of this revolution, affected every aspect of the Navy.

• Tells the little understood story of the Royal Navy’s total dependence on coal and its global distribution.

• First time this oft-ignored subject has been tackled.

• A wide-ranging subject that embraces so many aspects of naval history.

A LIFE UNDER SAIL

the AquAtic Adventures of A royAL mArine

Ewen Southby-Tailyour

Ewen Southby-Tailyour’s lifetime involvement with small boats—civilian and military alike—began with an unusual christening and endured until he sold his final vessel on his 80th birthday. Between these two moments lies a sailing life defined not by sunlit anchorages but by cold, remote, and often uncharted waters. He sailed extensively in the Falkland Islands and among the unsurveyed fjords of north-west Iceland and northern Norway, frequently in winter, choosing challenge and exploration over comfort.

His love of the sea was kindled at the age of four, trawling under sail, and deepened through decades crewing the classic pilot cutter Olga. During over thirty years of family ownership, he sailed her every Easter and summer holiday, absorbing navigation, seamanship, and ships’ husbandry by lived experience. At Nautical College Pangbourne he passed O Levels in celestial navigation, seamanship, and signals and, despite being captain of sailing, declined an Olympic trial in favour of deep-water cruising and exploration.

An accomplished navigator, he took part in six Fastnet Races, skippered six two-handed Round Britain races, sailed single-handed around Majorca, and competed in a two-handed race to Iceland. Abroad, he sought to understand indigenous craft, sailing Arabian dhows, Chinese junks, Kenyan outriggers, and square-riggers wherever opportunity allowed. In the Falkland Islands, finding charts unchanged since the nineteenth century, he conducted his own surveys— work that later informed amphibious planning in 1982.

His sailing life was not without drama. He fell overboard twice, once while alone, and survived extreme weather, including being trapped off an Icelandic lee shore in a Force 11—an ordeal later recounted in the seminal textbook Heavy Weather Sailing.

BATTLES OF THE RUSSIAN NAVY 1793–1815

Philip MacDougall

In the naval war fought against France between 1793 and 1815, the activities of the Russian navy have been substantially neglected by Western historians. This book seeks to redress this oversight. After Great Britain and France, Russia had, during these years, the world’s third most powerful navy, with squadrons of warships primarily active in the Baltic, North Sea, Black Sea, Mediterranean and Adriatic. Active in the war against Revolutionary France as an ally of Great Britain, the central theme of this book is that of evaluating the effectiveness of the Russian navy during those war time years, giving particular attention to its co-operation with the British Royal Navy in several campaigns. Viewing the Russian navy of this period as one fundamentally created by Catherine the Great (r.1762-96), its establishment by Peter the Great (r.1682-1725), and its original purpose is not ignored. Throughout, the book is informed by first hand writings and documents, many not available in Britain, these highlighting the tactics and strategies adopted by Russian commanders. Often played down by western naval historians, those strategies and tactics were often in advance of accepted naval doctrine, and achieved several notable victories. Not forgotten is the importance of the land-based infrastructure that was so essential in supporting Russia’s seagoing navy, conditions of service on Russian ships and the nature of the command structure.

• Undertakes a deep exploration into the role of the Russian Navy in the war against France 1793–1815.

• Provides an understanding of the social and economic dynamics that underpinned the Navy’s operational performance and administrative structure.

• Gives an overview of the Navy from its foundation under Peter the Great to its later reconstruction by Catherine the Great.

• Considers the cooperation between the British and Russian Navies, their effectiveness and moments of friction and misunderstanding.

AMPHIBIOUS WARFARE POST WWII

A royAL mArine’s AnthoLogy

Ewen Southby-Tailyour

Amphibious Warfare Post WWII is a collection of essays and articles written for various military publications during the author’s 32 years’ service. Following retirement he was able to express his opinions and views in a rather more forthright manner as the Editor of Jane’s Amphibious and Special Forces. As a renowned practitioner of amphibious operations much of what he has to say remains relevant and seminal to this day. The author also describes his time as a European Community Monitor in the Former Yugoslavia (from which he resigned after being ordered to falsify his daily reports to Brussels) and his experiences as a company commander during the Dhofar War.

• Written by a seasoned officer with 32 years’ service, this book offers hard won lessons drawn directly from planning and conducting amphibious operations, making it essential reading for professionals and serious students of modern warfare.

• Compiled after retirement and sharpened by the author’s tenure as Editor of Jane’s Amphibious and Special Forces, these essays provide candid, unfiltered assessments rarely found in official doctrine or contemporary accounts.

• The author’s firsthand experiences—from commanding troops in the Dhofar War to monitoring the Former Yugoslavia—add depth, credibility, and moral clarity, ensuring the book remains relevant and provocative in today’s evolving amphibious and expeditionary landscape.

Third volume of the critically-acclaimed series stressing maritime trade as the driver of world history, wealth-creation, technologiical inventiveness, art and literature. This book tackles the Maritime Enlightenment, which spurred economic liberalism and humanitarianism, unlike its continental version, breaking free from historic attitudes to slavery and serfdom, contextualising current debates on imperial history. The immediate cause of America’s War of Independence is revealed to be about illegal maritime trade. Jefferson and Madison never understood the latent wealth-creating power of US trade, misdirecting energies for some years. US north-south divisions were exacerbated by trade tariffs more than than slavery. The failure of France’s Revolution and Germany’s 20th-century wars were also failures to appreciate its importance. The post 1945 rise of Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, China and UAE were directly because of their encouragement of maritime trade and shipping. Britain’s decline was heralded by political indifference then hostility, contrasting with its previous encouragement; its greatest strength. Nick’s chapter on shipping’s efforts to achieve net-zero is a must read for anyone involved in the green debate.

SOMERLED, LORD OF THE ISLES

the WArrior Who redefined Western scotLAnd Alastair Redman

Somerled: Lord of the Isles explores the life and legacy of one of the most remarkable figures in Scottish and Hebridean history. In the turbulent twelfth century, Somerled rose from obscurity to challenge Norse rule in the Hebrides and forge a kingdom that blended Gaelic and Norse traditions. As a warrior, statesman, and founder of a powerful dynasty, his influence stretched across the western seaboard and shaped the identity of the Highlands and Islands for centuries to come. This book charts Somerled’s journey from minor chieftain to sea king, examining the political, cultural, and military forces that enabled his rise. It follows the establishment of the Lordship of the Isles by his descendants, a unique maritime kingdom that endured long after his death. Richly detailed and drawing upon the latest archaeological and historical research, Somerled: Lord of the Isles brings to life a period often overlooked in mainstream history. It is a compelling account of resilience, ambition, and the forging of an identity rooted in land and sea, providing new insights into the man who would become a legend.

The story of Scotland’s male witches and wizards always promised to be a convulted one, and the tale indeed turns out to be a strange tree with many twisted branches. The nation has several venerable magical figures who compete in stature with the legendary Merlin. Michael Scot, Thomas of Erceldoune and Coinneach Odhar were, respectively scholar, poet and seer, but they still command enormous presence in the national imagination. The forgotten men who got caught up in the national witch hunts were as unfortunate as the far greater number if women persecuted. Among those prosecuted were healers like Andro Man, who practiced his skills for decades before being examined. For every sincere practitioner or innocent, there were many more frauds and distorted characters caught up in the supernatural net. Major Weir left a dark stain on Edinburgh for a century after his death and Gregor Willox Macgregor is still remembered in the north with a mixture of doubtful contempt and fear.

• Explores the overlooked stories of male witches, wizards, and seers who shaped — and haunted — the national imagination.

• Blends revered figures and folk heroes with the grim truths of witch hunts, frauds, and persecution.

PATRIOTS, RADICALS AND REVOLUTIONARIES

the british roLe in AmericAn indePendence Leanne O-Boyle

This book tells the story of American independence from the British side, following five sharply contrasting lives in the run up to 1776, all championing liberty, though rarely agreeing on what that meant in practice. Through the eyes of a king, a statesman, a general, a radical, and a diplomat, it explores a revolution that was as much about competing visions of freedom as it was about a rebellion against perceived tyranny. This book offers a fresh perspective on a well-known story. It reveals the American Revolution not as a simple tale of tyranny and resistance, but as a shared, ongoing global struggle over the meaning of liberty itself.

• A fresh British perspective on the American Revolution as it reaches its 250th anniversary: Tells the story of independence from this side of the Atlantic, revealing how debates over liberty unfolded in Britain as well as America.

• Five lives, five visions of liberty: Follows King George III, Benjamin Franklin, Lord North, General Thomas Gage, and Thomas Paine, showing how radically different ideas of freedom collided in 1776.

DR JOSEPH GOEBBELS

A bender of minds - A study of A ProPAgAndA exPert

Joseph Goebbels remains one of the most disturbing figures of the Nazi regime. Exceptionally intelligent and academically gifted, he was raised in a Roman Catholic household and once considered the priesthood. Supported in his studies by Jewish scholars, Goebbels’ ambitions were sharpened by a lifelong physical disability and the turmoil of post war Germany. Drawn to Nazism in the 1920s, he became one of Hitler’s most loyal lieutenants and, as Reich Minister of Propaganda, engineered the lies and narratives that sustained hatred, Total War and false hope for a collapsing regime. His private life was marked by obsession and turmoil. In 1945, he and his wife murdered their six children before taking their own lives. This biography charts the rise and catastrophic fall of a man whose talents were devoted to destruction rather than achievement.

STALIN’S SECRET SERVICES

henchmAn And Poisoned tiPPed umbreLLAs

Andrew Sangster

Stalin’s Secret Services: Henchmen and Poisoned Tipped Umbrellas traces the rise of the Soviet secret police from Tsarist origins to the terror of Stalin’s regime. Central to the narrative is Lavrentiy Beria, head of the NKVD, whose ambition helped create a paranoid state where murder became policy. The story continues with Pavel Sudoplatov, a master assassin who orchestrated Trotsky’s murder and espionage against the West. Drawing unsettling parallels with Nazi Germany, the book explores atrocities such as the Katyn massacre and examines how ideology collapsed into brutality. In its closing chapters, it reflects on autocracy, moral freedom and the corrupting nature of power, offering a sobering warning about how easily societies descend into darkness.

• Split into four main chapters, the book explores the nature of intelligence work and the secret police from Tsarist Russia to the height of Stalin’s regime.

• Chapter One gives a detailed insight into the life and work of Lavrenty Beria, head of the NKVD and organiser of the Katyn massacre. During WWII Beria became the most powerful security chief in Soviet history.

• Chapter Two explores Beria’s key secret agents, most notably Pavel Sudoplatov, who was the chief organiser behind the assassination of Leon Trotsky.

THE RISE OF FASCISM IN BRITAIN

from the suffrAge movement to osWALd mosLey

This powerful and unsettling book explores how fascism came perilously close to taking root in Britain. It begins with the White Feather Brigade: women from the Suffrage movement who, abandoned by Emmeline Pankhurst at the outbreak of the First World War, redirected their energies into pressuring men to enlist. When peace arrived and they were still largely denied the vote, some were drawn to a new ideology that promised recognition and purpose: British fascism. Tracing the movement from the early British Fascisti through the General Strike, the book charts Oswald Mosley’s rise, his links to Hitler and members of the Royal Family, and his eventual downfall during the Second World War. Rigorous yet accessible, it reveals how fear of socialism, national trauma and misplaced patriotism briefly nurtured authoritarian ideas in Britain, and why they ultimately failed.

• Reveals how fascism almost became a reality in Britain

• Explores how women from the suffrage movement became early participants in shaping authoritarian ideologies.

• Examines Mosley’s rise, his connections to Hitler and the British Royal Family, and the political tensions of interwar Britain.

• Based on contemporary newspapers, first-hand accounts, and primary sources.

TRUE CRIME

TWENTIETH CENTURY COP

the fLying squAd detective Who Wrote ‘the biLL’

Barry Appleton, Oliver Crocker

Barry Appleton investigated some of the most notorious crimes of the twentieth century, from major robberies to murders that shocked the world. Policing the East End under the Krays, he earned commendations for courage before joining the Flying Squad and going undercover on highprofile cases, including the assassination of Martin Luther King. Injured in the line of duty after years on the ‘Sweeney’, he later found success as lead scriptwriter on The Bill. Twentieth Century Cop is a gripping memoir of crime, courage and an extraordinary life on the streets and on screen.

• ‘When the armed robber faced me with a sawn-off shotgun, I had to decide in that split second whether it was going to be him or me who had to fall… having a wife and kids waiting for me to get home safely was the greatest incentive imaginable.’

• Before legendary telly coppers Frank Burnside and Jim Taggart investigated countless murders, one of their scriptwriters did it for real. Serving with the Metropolitan Police between 1957-1977, Barry Appleton rose the ranks from beat bobby to Detective Inspector.

A READER’S GUIDE TO TERRY PRATCHETT 1962-1999

This book takes Pratchett seriously as a literary figure without taking the fun out of him. Moving chronologically from his earliest short stories through to 1999’s The Fifth Elephant, this first volume charts how an angry young journalist from Beaconsfield turned genre parody into something far more ambitious: a body of work concerned with belief, power, identity, and what happens when enough people believe the same thing at once. A second volume will cover The Truth (2000) through to Pratchett’s final novel, The Shepherd’s Crown.

• Foreword by Rob Wilkins — Sir Terry Pratchett’s assistant and business manager, and now the co-manager of his literary estate and the author of the other award-winning biography of Sir Terry, A Life with Footnotes.

• The perfect companion for new readers and old Kevins — whether you’re wondering where to start or ready to revisit old favourites with fresh eyes, this is the guide the Discworld (and beyond) has been waiting for.

• Criticism you’ll actually enjoy reading — sharp, funny, and written in the spirit of Pratchett himself.

P E P PROTOTYPE TRAINS, CLASSES

313, 314, 315, 507, 508

the cLAss of 1972

By the late 1960s British Rail faced decline after steam’s end and the Beeching cuts. A fightback began with bold modernisation and a focus on urban commuters. Extensive design and testing produced five closely related train classes that proved highly successful. Serving major cities across England and Scotland, these units carried millions, outlived their intended service lives and became favourites with enthusiasts, with examples preserved after withdrawal. This book traces their story from conception to the end of their working lives.

• This is the complete story of a family of trains from concept to design to delivery and into service.

• These units were the unsung workhorse of their regions for decades.

• The PEP prototypes and the production units that derived from them marked the beginning of the modern railway we know today and this was a turning point in the eveolution of our commuter railways.

• Despite looking nearly identical there were many differences hidden between the types and this book explains them all.

THE BRITISH RAIL HIGH SPEED TRAIN

the evoLution of the inter city 125 Tim Hillier-Graves

After fifty years of service, the High Speed Train 125s are nearing the end of their working lives. Created as a practical response to delays in the Advanced Passenger Train programme, they quickly proved transformative, delivering fast, reliable services across Britain for decades. Operated by British Rail and later private companies, the 125s exceeded all expectations and became icons of the network. This book pays tribute to their designers, operators and enduring impact on modern British rail travel.

• This book celebrates fifty years of the HST 125’s outstanding service to Britain.

• As a stopgap, in support of BR’s much delayed APT programme, it far exceeded all expectations and, undoubtedly, helped save a ailing network.

• As their lives finally draw to a close this richly illustrated book (300 plus pictures) looks closely at their evolution and those responsible for the project’s success.

• The author then goes on to consider what drove the project forward and the way these trains so effectively served both BR and the privatized companies that followed.

LONDON’S SMALLER BUS TYPES SINCE 1986

Since the 1980s, London’s streets have been dominated by familiar bus types from AEC, Leyland, Dennis, Volvo and others. Alongside these mainstays, many lesser used models also served the capital in smaller numbers. This book focuses on those overlooked bus types introduced since 1986, from niche Dennis and Volvo designs to vehicles from Wrightbus, Optare, MCW, Renault, Mercedes Benz and MAN. It explores how these smaller fleets complemented London’s bus network and added variety to the capital’s evolving transport scene.

• A previously undocumented period of London bus history.

• Contains a collection of previously unpublished photographs.

• Newly Researched Information with Informative Captions.

• Useful to Modellers.

LAMBORGHINI’S HOLY TRINITY

the evoLution of the countAch, diAbLo And murcieLAgo bLoodLine

Thillainathan Pathmanthan, Anne Christina Reck

This is the first book that examines this supercar triumvirate as a single discrete entity. Here, two passionate Lamborghini enthusiasts, who have owned their Countach for a quarter of a century and their Murcielago for a decade, meticulously describe the conception, development and production of Lamborghini’s Holy Trinity, and each of the models’ sub-variants.

Uniquely, the authors also elaborate on the evolutionary golden thread that weaves its way between and through these three supercars.

• The first book to look at the Lamborghini Countach, Diablo and Murcielago as a single discrete entity.

• The first book to look how technological innovations and the sociopolitico-economic factors forced the Countach to evolve into the Diablo and thence the Murcielago.

• Detailed descriptions of the conception, development and production of the Countach, Diablo and Murcielago and their sub-variants.

• Contemporary societal concerns are examined in the context of supercar evolution, including air pollution legislation, climate change pressures, driver, passenger and pedestrian safety laws, wars and revolutions, economic crises and global recessions, fuel availability and prices, and Central Bank interest rates.

A Journey into engLAnd’s most unusuAL grAves

CROSS THE MERSEY

the trAnsformAtion of A river

The River Mersey is one of Britain’s greatest rivers, though it has a troublesome past. A trade link to the colonies of the New World, its waters were the principal hub for the British slave trade, and since the Industrial Revolution, levels of pollution rose to such a degree that it was dubbed the most polluted river in western Europe. But in recent years, the river has been transformed. In this book, Robert Littlewood travels the Mersey, crisscrossing it via its many bridges, ferry crossings and tunnels, exploring stretches never mentioned in other books, and all the while telling its rich and complex story—a story of transformation.

• Explores many areas never recorded in any previous book about the River Mersey.

• The first book to record every crossing point of the Mersey.

• Contains stunning photography captured over a 3-year period of every stretch of the Mersey and every bridge and crossing.

• Uses aerial photography for some unique images as well as traditional methods.

• Shares stories about every area of the Mersey from Stockport to Liverpool via Manchester, Urmston, Warrington, Widnes and Birkenhead.

THE VINEYARD VENTURE

An engLish fAmiLy’s Life in sAuternes

Nigel Reay-Jones

In July 1986, Nigel Reay-Jones and his wife Georgea sold their house in the Cotswolds and moved, with their five small children, to Château de Commarque, a dilapidated medieval fortified farm-turned hotel-restaurant in the tiny commune of Sauternes, near Bordeaux, with a small vineyard attached in even worse condition than the house. This book, a brilliantly entertaining account written after a decade of laughter, adventure and, without hyperbole, momentous struggle, is a tale for winelovers, Francophiles and dreamers. It is the story of a life lived off the beaten path… down a bumpy track and at the end of a narrow lane in one of Bordeaux’s smallest and most revered wine-producing areas.

• A brilliantly written and often hilarious account of taking a giant leap of faith.

• A book for Francophiles – introduces an array of memorable characters.

• An excellent introduction to the art of winemaking – will appeal to anyone with a serious interest in wine.

• A joyful book to make you love France and, refreshingly, be proud to be British

PRESERVED BULLEID PACIFICS

heritAge And mAin Line

Mark V Pike

The Bulleid Pacifics of BR’s former Southern Region have always generated great interest. Some were in service right up to 1967, when steam operations ended in the south of England, often running in a deplorable state of repair. But with their eventual demise, interest only strengthened. Over thirty of these locomotives still exist in preservation today in one form or another, with some returning to steam on heritage lines, and even to the main line where they have now gained a whole new following of enthusiasts. With over 240 previously unpublished colour photographs ranging from the 1990s right up to the mid-2020s, Preserved Bulleid Pacifics: Heritage and Main Line showcases these iconic locomotives in the south of England like never before.

• Bulleid Pacifics are among the most popular of steam locomotives.

• An exciting array of unpublished photographs.

• A focus on preserved locomotives in the south of England.

GWR STATIONS

cotsWoLds And southWest engLAnd

Allen Jackson

There was never an old railway company so loved and revered as the Great Western. Great Western stations of the old company have survived for nearly 200 years in some cases, but modernisation in the shape of enhanced access, security and electrification means that many have lost their essential character GWR Stations: Cotswolds and Southwest England shows the stations as they were for many years, before recent modernisation, and the survivors that have managed to retain their character, usually by keeping a low profile and quietly carrying on with what they were built for so many years ago. The stations featured are, for the most part, not main line behemoths, but more modest structures found on secondary main lines and branch lines. Many of the old GWR names have been shortened in recent years, but the former names, usually derived from the original Act of Parliament for the line, are used here. It is hoped that these images of lesser historic structures will encourage people to visit the corners of the Cotswolds and Southwest where they are, and help inspire railway modellers to make replicas in miniature.

• A valuable record of the recent past.

• Richly illustrated with colour images.

• Contains several maps of the secondary main lines and branch lines.

THE GREAT RAILWAY SPECULATIONS

voLume 2: the exPAnsion of the midLAnd rAiLWAy netWork in engLAnd 1848–1860

Ray Shill

The establishment of the core railway network in the Midlands by the mid-nineteenth century led to further expansion and the creation of four principal operators: Great Northern Railway, Great Western Railway, London & North Western Railway and the Midland Railway. A host of new independent companies also appeared and various joint lines and railways remained under independent ownership, but the operation of trains was in the hands of one of these four main concerns. It was a period marked by intense rivalries, especially between the Great Western Railway, a broad-gauge operator, and the other companies which operated on standard gauge. In a short-term compromise, the mixed gauge was created, enabling the Great Western Railway to reach the West Midlands. Mergers and amalgamations were another key aspect of the period, with authorised routes being continually absorbed by the principal operators. Their shareholders profited from these takeovers, but there were plenty of schemes in which investors lost money, especially those that were authorised but, for various reasons, never happened. This second volume of The Great Railway Speculations explores a period of outstanding progress in civil engineering and locomotive design, when the four principal operating companies expanded their networks and consolidated their operations to provide an improved public service for passengers, freight and parcels traffic. Opportunities to make astonishing returns on investments remained as rich as ever, and yet there were also many projects that ended in failure and ruin.

• Tackles new ground on the subject of speculation and the methods adopted to curb it.

• Examines the contest between broad- and standard-gauge operators in the battle to expand rival networks.

• Investigates the contractors used to build the Midland Railway Network.

THE 28TH INFANTRY DIVISION IN THE HÜRTGEN FOREST

forgotten sAcrifice

Walter S Zapotoczny Jr

The five-month Battle of the Hürtgen Forest (September 1944–February 1945) was one of the most disastrous U.S. campaigns of the war. The 28th Infantry Division bore much of the pain, losing 6,840 men killed, wounded, or missing. But despite these losses, the division played a crucial role in the broader Allied effort to repel the German forces in the region. Drawing on many first-hand accounts, this book tells the story of the most gruelling and costly chapter of that supreme effort.

• Draws on first-hand accounts, revealing the harrowing stories of individual soldiers.

• Provides in-depth analysis of the decisions taken.

• Charts the course of the battle in detail and the daily experiences of the soldiers, while also examining the wider context.
