Phone Scams Take Advantage During Pandemic
I
n today’s world, scams are inevitable. Scammers can threaten you with everything from legal action involving the IRS to turning off power to your home. Unfortunately, we have seen a cycle of phone scams trying to take advantage of our members during the fear and confusion brought on by the pandemic. Utility scammers typically target our members through calls and emails. Scammers pose as the utility and threaten legal action or shutting off power hoping our members will panic and give into their demands. Here are three good ways to avoid getting taken advantage of by these unscrupulous individuals: 1. Make secure payments in person, by calling the cooperative directly or online using our app or website. WFEC will never show up at your door to demand payment. Never be fooled by a phony caller ID. Hang up if you receive a call demanding immediate payment of a utility bill to avoid disconnection of shut off. Never return a call to the call-back phone number provided by an unknown caller.

If someone comes to your home claiming to be an employee of WFEC that needs to collect money or inspect parts of your property, call us to verify they are, in fact, an employee. If they are not, call local authorities for assistance and do not let the individual into your home. 3. Beware of demands for immediate payment by wire transfer, gift cards or other unusual methods. Scammers often use threats and urgency to pressure you into giving them your bank account number or loading a pre-paid credit or debit card (such as a Green Dot card).

If you are contacted by a scammer, gather as much information as you can from that individual, hang-up the phone and contact the local authorities or the co-op. here are few things better than hot water, whether it’s for dishwashing, showering or laundry. While it’s a convenience, water heating can account for up to 18 percent of your household energy

armers keep food on our tables and help bring resources, like cotton and peanuts, into our lives. Harvest season is one of the busiest times of year for local farmers - but it can also be the most dangerous. As your safety connection, we’re providing some reminders to help people working on the farm be safe, especially around power lines. WFEC urges farmers and farm hands to keep these guidelines in mind before heading to the fields for harvesting this year. Think about the day’s work, especially the projects near power lines. •
Protect yourself and workers by keeping farm equipment at least 10 feet away from power lines in all directions at all times.
•
Use a spotter when moving or raising tall equipment and loads. A power line can be closer than it looks. Someone watching to keep equipment far away from power lines could save a life.
•
Lower equipment extensions, portable augers or elevators to their lowest possible level before moving or transporting them. This lessens the possibility that wind, uneven ground and shifting weight causes you to lose control of equipment and make contact with power lines. Keep in mind that although the size of agricultural machinery has increased substantially over the years, the clearance underneath our lines might not have. Combines, peanut pickers and grain augers can reach well
into the 10 foot radius around a power line. Farm vehicles with wireless communication system antennas can also make contact and energize the vehicle with deadly electricity. •
Notice height differences when loading and transporting larger modern tractors with higher antennas.
•
Call your utility to repair, raise or move sagging power lines on or near your property. Never attempt to do this yourself.
•
Break up bridged grain inside and around bins with wood poles or other safe material. Do not use metal poles, which are electrocution hazards.
•
Be careful not to raise ladders, poles and rods into power lines. Also, remember that non-metallic materials, such as lumber, tree limbs, tires, ropes and hay can also conduct electricity.
ALERT TODAY, ALIVE TOMORROW: Heads Up for Farm Safety
Stay safe around downed power lines. Consider all lines, equipment & conductors to be live & dangerous. If you can drive safely away from the power source without bringing down the utility pole & lines, travel at least 40 ft. before exiting. If you are unable to drive due to injury, obstacles or it is inoperable, do NOT exit. Call for help & warn anyone nearby NOT to approach.

Wait for utility workers to de-energize a power line and confirm that it’s safe for you to exit if you are on equipment that contacts a power line. Then, shuffle away from the vehicle, keeping your feet together and on the ground to prevent current flow through your body.

Phone Scams Take Advantage During Pandemic
I
n today’s world, scams are inevitable. Scammers can threaten you with everything from legal action involving the IRS to turning off power to your home. Unfortunately, we have seen a cycle of phone scams trying to take advantage of our members during the fear and confusion brought on by the pandemic. Utility scammers typically target our members through calls and emails. Scammers pose as the utility and threaten legal action or shutting off power hoping our members will panic and give into their demands. Here are three good ways to avoid getting taken advantage of by these unscrupulous individuals: 1. Make secure payments in person, by calling the cooperative directly or online using our app or website. WFEC will never show up at your door to demand payment. Never be fooled by a phony caller ID. Hang up if you receive a call demanding immediate payment of a utility bill to avoid disconnection of shut off. Never return a call to the call-back phone number provided by an unknown caller.
