Heroes Work Here
A
sign at a post office honors the heroes that work there. Customers placed it there. There should be other signs. These are really crazy times. There hasn’t been a global pandemic in more than 100 years, and, outside of world wars, the world’s economy has never been shut down like the last four months. We have likely not yet seen the worst of the economic suffering. There is no manual on how to operate a business or our personal lives through a crisis like this. Even with the shutdowns, shut-ins and shelter-in-place orders, essential services have to carry on every day and, at times, every minute of every day. The heroic efforts of nurses and doctors were seen every day as they fought to save the lives of COVID patients while New York hospitals were overrun with cases. Likewise, nurses and doctors in Florida and every other hospital in most of the world continue to respond with courage to treat and save the lives of COVID victims. Those efforts have been less publicized but are no less real and apparent. Brent Miller, a local Graceville resident, is just one of the many Nursing essential workers who continue working to ensure our members homes have power during the pandemic. have been ravaged by COVID outbreaks. At one point, more than 50% of the COVID deaths in New Jersey originated in nursing homes. Nursing home staff are truly heroic going to work every day, knowing the virus is in the facility yet putting their own safety at risk by caring for the patients. Many workers have contracted the virus. They could have easily just stayed at home and avoided the exposure. They are COVID heroes.

Pharmacy workers, too, meet the public and dispense medicines to the families of COVID victims. Some of those customers have been exposed to the virus and have the potential to pass it on to pharmacy workers as their prescriptions are filled. Those workers accept the risk of exposure to help their customers cope with their illnesses. They could just stay home, but they don’t. They are COVID heroes. There are so many others. The postal workers mentioned earlier deliver the mail. Grocery workers keep shelves stocked. Waiters and waitresses serve our food if we eat out. Hardware store workers and other retail workers are exposed to so many people each day. We could go on. There are so many more. If you look around, you will see many COVID heroes working every day to perform essential services so our lives can continue at some level of normalcy. This brings us to the employees of PowerSouth Energy Cooperative and West Florida Electric Cooperative. It is difficult to understand the complexity of electric service or the electric grid. Electric service is instantaneous, moving at the speed of light. Reliable service requires skilled people to monitor and control the system at all times. Power plant workers are required to operate generation plants around the clock. The transmission grid requires constant monitoring to prevent overloads in peak periods or from outages. Transmission and distribution lines have to be repaired when they are damaged or fail. Bills have to be processed and paid, and administrative duties have to be handled. PowerSouth’s and West Florida Electrics employees from various departments are vital to the day-to-day operations of the cooperative in its efforts to provide reliable electric service to its members. These employees have worked through the COVID crisis, exposing themselves to the risk of infection to do their job and keep electric service available. Two storms on back-to-back weekends in April damaged parts of PowerSouth’s transmission system and large parts of WFEC’s system, too. These employees responded quickly in the storms to repair damage and restore electric service. It would have been easy for them to just stay home and avoid exposure in the public to protect themselves and their families,
but they went to work and repaired the systems as quickly as possible. We have all learned from this experience. We have learned more about the exposure risks and dangers of the virus. We have learned how to better protect ourselves, our families and our co-workers. When it all started, we heard about essential and nonessential employees. We heard how we needed to protect our essential workers so that essential services could continue. We have learned that there are many more essential services and essential workers than we ever imagined. The longer we are in the pandemic, the more services we find are essential. We should all be thankful that people are willing to put themselves at risk to provide those services. We have realized how good PowerSouth Energy Cooperative’s & West Florida Electric’s people are. They have done whatever was needed or asked of them including changing routines and put themselves at risk of exposure to make sure their jobs were done. All without complaint. Heroes do work here.

Do not shoot at or near power lines or insulators.
Know where power lines and equipment are located on the land where you hunt.

Be especially careful in wooded areas where power lines may not be as visible.
Do not place deer stands on utility poles or climb poles. Energized lines and equipment can conduct electricity to anyone who comes in contact with them, causing shock or electrocution.

A Changing Energy Landscape
O
ur number one priority at West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) is delivering reliable electricity to our members who count on us to power their homes and businesses around the clock. Electricity is an essential part of daily life, so it’s important that electric rates are affordable. Approximately 61 percent of your electric bill covers the cost of generating power. To help keep the cost of energy affordable, we partner with other electric cooperatives and municipal electric systems through our wholesale power provider, PowerSouth. This allows us to pool resources to maintain an economical and reliable mix of energy 24/7/365. Today’s energy mix WFEC’s responsibility to our members and community is to safely provide electricity, at a price our members can afford with minimal effect to our environment. In keeping with these commitments, we use a diverse mix of generating resources (fossil fuels, renewables, and, soon, nuclear). Having multiple generating resources protects our members from unpredictable changes in the cost of fuels used to operate power plants. Today, our energy mix consists of natural gas (77.2%), coal (18.9%), hydroelectricity (3.6%) and other renewables (0.3%). Compared to just three years ago when 48.1% was produced from PowerSouth’s natural gas units, while 22.4% was generated by their coal units. We are continuing the shift to a more environmentally friendly energy supply. Currently, the majority of our electricity is generated by fossil fuels like natural gas and coal because they allow us to provide large

amounts of energy at an economical cost around the clock. Natural gas is a reliable, clean-burning and cost-effective fuel source, and PowerSouth operates state-of-theart power plants in Gantt and McIntosh, Alabama. Coal-fired generation has long been a cornerstone of the energy mix, and will continue to serve a portion of our members’ energy needs in the future. Like natural gas, it offers a steady supply of energy at a low cost. When it comes to renewable energy sources, hydroelectric generation and landfill gas-to-energy make up a small percentage of today’s energy mix. Hydroelectricity was PowerSouth’s first generation resource and for 70 years has proven to be a reliable portion of the generating fleet. Landfill gas from the Springhill Regional Landfill near Campbellton, Florida, which is located in WFEC’s service area, provides enough green energy for approximately 4,000 homes. Planning for the future As we look toward the next generation of energy resources, we are taking steps today to ensure a safe, reliable, affordable and environmentallyfriendly energy supply for the future. The long-term power supply plan includes implementing cutting-edge technology, construction of a new natural gas generating plant and utility-scale solar project, and the addition of nuclear energy. By 2026, PowerSouth projects its energy mix will consist of natural gas (77.0%), nuclear (10.7%), coal (6.4%), and renewables such as hydro, landfill gas and solar (5.9%). Construction of the new Lowman Energy Center is now underway. When complete, the state-of-the-art natural gas combined cycle power plant will be among the most technologically advanced, efficient and environmentally sound generating plants in the country. Scheduled for completion in 2023, the Lowman Energy Center will have the ability to serve the around-the-clock energy needs of more than 300,000 homes per year. Adding nuclear energy to our power supply mix will also underscore our ability to supply uninterrupted power to our members at an affordable cost. Nuclear is a safe and reliable, “always-on” power source that promotes diversity of PowerSouth’s energy portfolio heading into the future. PowerSouth will add nuclear energy to its mix through a purchased power agreement with the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia (MEAG). Energy will be generated at Vogtle Nuclear Power Plant’s two new units currently under construction. Through this agreement, PowerSouth will not own the nuclear power plant, but will purchase a portion of the energy it produces. The first unit will become operational in late 2021. Finally, PowerSouth will soon begin construction of a utility-scale ISSUE SEPTEMBER 2020
solar project in Wing, Alabama, scheduled to go online in 2022. This will add enough solar-generated energy to PowerSouth’s mix to power a portion of the energy needs of more than 13,200 homes. Solar is a welcome addition to our energy portfolio. Adding solar generation promotes diversity of our energy mix but also presents challenges because of its intermittent nature. The Trustees previously made the decision to postpone the event, however, due to the continued spread of the disease and the recommendations of the CDC, it has now been cancelled for 2020. Pharmacy workers, too, meet the public and dispense medicines to the families of COVID victims. Some of those customers have been exposed to the virus and have the potential to pass it on to pharmacy workers as their prescriptions are filled. Those workers accept the risk of exposure to help their customers cope with their illnesses. They could just stay home, but they don’t. They are COVID heroes. There are so many others. The postal workers mentioned earlier deliver the mail. Grocery workers keep shelves stocked. Waiters and waitresses serve our food if we eat out. Hardware store workers and other retail workers are exposed to so many people each day. We could go on. There are so many more. If you look around, you will see many COVID heroes working every day to perform essential services so our lives can continue at some level of normalcy. This brings us to the employees of PowerSouth Energy Cooperative and West Florida Electric Cooperative. It is difficult to understand the complexity of electric service or the electric grid. Electric service is instantaneous, moving at the speed of light. Reliable service requires skilled people to monitor and control the system at all times. Power plant workers are required to operate generation plants around the clock. The transmission grid requires constant monitoring to prevent overloads in peak periods or from outages. Transmission and distribution lines have to be repaired when they are damaged or fail. Bills have to be processed and paid, and administrative duties have to be handled. PowerSouth’s and West Florida Electrics employees from various departments are vital to the day-to-day operations of the cooperative in its efforts to provide reliable electric service to its members. These employees have worked through the COVID crisis, exposing themselves to the risk of infection to do their job and keep electric service available. Two storms on back-to-back weekends in April damaged parts of PowerSouth’s transmission system and large parts of WFEC’s system, too. These employees responded quickly in the storms to repair damage and restore electric service. It would have been easy for them to just stay home and avoid exposure in the public to protect themselves and their families,
but they went to work and repaired the systems as quickly as possible. We have all learned from this experience. We have learned more about the exposure risks and dangers of the virus. We have learned how to better protect ourselves, our families and our co-workers. When it all started, we heard about essential and nonessential employees. We heard how we needed to protect our essential workers so that essential services could continue. We have learned that there are many more essential services and essential workers than we ever imagined. The longer we are in the pandemic, the more services we find are essential. We should all be thankful that people are willing to put themselves at risk to provide those services. We have realized how good PowerSouth Energy Cooperative’s & West Florida Electric’s people are. They have done whatever was needed or asked of them including changing routines and put themselves at risk of exposure to make sure their jobs were done. All without complaint. Heroes do work here.

Heroes Work Here
A
sign at a post office honors the heroes that work there. Customers placed it there. There should be other signs. These are really crazy times. There hasn’t been a global pandemic in more than 100 years, and, outside of world wars, the world’s economy has never been shut down like the last four months. We have likely not yet seen the worst of the economic suffering. There is no manual on how to operate a business or our personal lives through a crisis like this. Even with the shutdowns, shut-ins and shelter-in-place orders, essential services have to carry on every day and, at times, every minute of every day. The heroic efforts of nurses and doctors were seen every day as they fought to save the lives of COVID patients while New York hospitals were overrun with cases. Likewise, nurses and doctors in Florida and every other hospital in most of the world continue to respond with courage to treat and save the lives of COVID victims. Those efforts have been less publicized but are no less real and apparent. Brent Miller, a local Graceville resident, is just one of the many Nursing essential workers who continue working to ensure our members homes have power during the pandemic. have been ravaged by COVID outbreaks. At one point, more than 50% of the COVID deaths in New Jersey originated in nursing homes. Nursing home staff are truly heroic going to work every day, knowing the virus is in the facility yet putting their own safety at risk by caring for the patients. Many workers have contracted the virus. They could have easily just stayed at home and avoided the exposure. They are COVID heroes.
