Archaeology Day Saturday, September 12 from 12-4 p.m. Panhandle Pioneer Settlement, Blountstown Organizations throughout the Panhandle are teaming up for a fun-filled day of activities to educate the public and children of all ages about archaeological & historical resources. The Florida Public Archaeology Network, University of West Florida, the Panhandle Pioneer Settlement and the Panhandle Archaeological Society of Tallahassee will host this event. Archaeologists will be on-hand to provide general information about archaeology, historic preservation, heritage tourism, and to identify artifacts from personal collections. What’s the BEST Way to Report Your Power Outage?

y phone. The best, quickest and most reliable way to report a power outage is by calling the cooperative directly at 800.342.7400 or 855.MY.WFECA. Reporting it to our service center remains the best way to make sure the cooperative is aware of an outage in your area. If an outage is large and impacts several hundred members, causing a heavy call load, service center personnel will activate our automated system to assist them with the volume of calls. But, rest assured, your call is always logged and if you leave a message, it is always listened to. The automated system is easy to use and will recognize your location using the telephone number you are calling from. That’s why is it especially important to make sure that all of your phone numbers are up-to-date in the cooperative’s files. If you think you might call in an outage using your cell phone, please make sure you add that number to your account information. WFEC has some useful tools you can use to find out more about power outages. These include the online outage map which can be accessed from the cooperative’s website (www.westflorida.coop) and WFEC’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/wfeca). Contacting an employee or member of the board of trustees at home will not benefit you or provide you with additional information about restoration times or what caused the outage. Only the linemen and service center personnel on call are directly involved and have first-hand knowledge of power restoration efforts. It is also best that you report the outage impacting your location directly to service center personnel yourself so they can accurately pinpoint your location. 75360011 The cooperative strives to keep members informed on social media, but oftentimes, the cause of an outage or an estimate about restoration times cannot be provided. The cooperative’s social media pages are also not the proper place to report an outage because of safety concerns. Never leave your address or any other personal or identifying information on the cooperative’s social media pages in the form of a post. It is also best not to send that type of information in a private message. Shield Your Home from Energy Loss with Adequate Insulation By Anne Prince

alls. Floors. Ceilings. Attic. These are some of the prime areas of a home that need insulation in order for you to maximize energy efficiency. According to the Department of Energy (DOE), adding insulation to your home is a sound investment that is likely to quickly pay for itself in reduced utility bills. In fact, DOE estimates that you can reduce your heating and cooling needs up to 30 percent by properly insulating and weatherizing your home. 8462001 If your home is more than 20 years old and was not specifically constructed for energy efficiency, additional insulation can likely reduce your energy bills and increase the comfort level of your home. The actual amount of savings for each home depends upon several factors—the current level of insulation, your climate, efficiency of your heating/cooling system and your utility rates. On average, older homes have less insulation than homes built today, but even adding insulation to a newer home can pay for itself within a few years. So, where do you start? You first need to determine how much insulation you already have in your home and where it is located. If you need assistance, WFEC conducts energy efficiency audits for the home and will check insulation as a routine part of the assessment. For those with the DIY spirit, you can conduct an insulation audit yourself. Here is what you should be looking for: • Where your home is, isn’t, and/or should be insulated • The type of insulation in your home • The R-value and the thickness or depth (inches) of the insulation A prime area that is chronically under-insulated is the attic. Whether you live in a cool or warm climate, attic insulation is essential to help keep warm air inside in the winter and prevent hot attic air from heating your living spaces in the summer. If you have R-19 or less insulation in your attic, consider bringing it up to R-38 in moderate climates and R-49 in cold climates. For flooring in cold climates, if you have R-11 or less insulation, consider bringing it up to R-25. How does insulation work? Heat flows naturally from a warmer space to a cooler space. During winter months, this means heat moves directly from heated living spaces to adjacent unheated attics, garages, basements and even outdoors. It can also travel indirectly through interior ceilings, walls and floors—wherever there is a difference in temperature. During summer months, the opposite happens—heat flows from the exterior to the interior of a home. Proper installation of insulation creates resistance to heat flow. Heat flow resistance is measured or rated in terms of its R-value—the higher the R-value, the greater the insulation’s effectiveness.
