s each of our members knows, it has been two years since the catastrophic Hurricane Michael forever changed our way of life, our landscape, and destroyed more than just our electric system. WFEC does not want to relive our experiences or revisit traumatic memories. You know. You lived it. We lived it. WFEC worked to repair our electric system as quickly and safely as possible with temporary repairs – but each and every pole and line must be inspected after those temporary repairs - repairs which must still be converted into more permanent repairs and solutions. This is called temporary to permanent work. Power was restored to members within 28 days – a major accomplishment after such damage – but system reliability takes time to rebuild. In essence, after the storm, WFEC restored your power temporarily but still needed to do the permanent work in order to enhance reliability. This is something that began after all temporary repairs were made and it’s a process that continues today and into the foreseeable future. WFEC has contracted with Musgrove, a utility contractor, to assist with this temporary to permanent work. The faster this work is completed, the sooner the reliability of WFEC’s system will return to pre-Hurricane Michael status. It’s important to keep in mind that your co-op has approximately 4,800 miles of overhead powerlines within its four-county service area so it will take years to complete properly. This is a process that WFEC is completely committed to but it will take time. The cooperative has continued to do our regularly scheduled “down line” right-of-way trimming with Asplundh and has also contracted with Burford to remove leaning and dangerous trees left behind by Hurricane

Michael. Many of these trees were not initially leaning or dead after the storm, but with weakened root systems, they have become an issue as time passed. In 2019, the co-op reported to members that it would owe in excess of $70 million dollars for damages and expenses caused directly by Hurricane Michael. At this time, WFEC has only received about one-third of the reimbursement from claims that have been submitted to FEMA. One hundred percent of the hurricane recovery fee WFEC collects is used to pay the interest and principle on the emergency line of credit required to cover these expenses until all FEMA reimbursements are received. FEMA is the only government agency from which WFEC will receive any reimbursements. All utilities serving our area, whether electrical or telecommunication, now have some sort of storm recovery fee built into their rates. WFEC is not the only utility to implement a hurricane recovery fee. The recovery fee is charged according to the amount of kilowatt hours (kWh) consumed by each member. This is the fairest way to recover the money needed to pay expenses that were incurred directly by Hurricane Michael. These expenses affect all of us since WFEC is a member-owned, not-for-profit cooperative. Many new members of the cooperative say they were not here during the storm and wonder why they have to pay the recovery fee - this fee is not a punishment for those who were here
or who were not - it is simply to pay the expenses until FEMA reimbursements are received. As your local, member-owned, not-for-profit electric cooperative, WFEC always wants to be transparent with its members about why we are collecting this fee and how we are using it. That’s just how we’re built as a co-op, following the Seven Cooperative Principles. Peak Hurricane Season is at our Doorstep
I
t’s October and in the Florida Panhandle we know all too well that it is the peak of our Atlantic Hurricane Season. In fact, Florida’s worst storms often come in October due to the very warm water, more humid air in the tropics and a general pattern that favors strong hurricanes across the central Atlantic Ocean. During this time of year, storms tend to form closer to the western Caribbean Sea, eastern Gulf of Mexico and east of Florida in the Atlantic. October cold fronts sweeping into the Gulf also often steer storms toward Florida. Because of this, Floridians are statistically more likely to see a land-falling hurricane in October. Since 1851, 10 of the 17 major hurricanes to strike the U.S. mainland have occurred in Florida in the month of October. At the time this article is being written, the National Hurricane Center is watching 4 systems which could become storms. With this in mind, please make storm preparations in advance. Create a plan and prepare an emergency kit now – not when a storm is knocking at the door. Protect yourself, your loved ones and your home by rounding up the supplies you’ll need in advance. Gather water, nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries, medications, and additional items ahead of time. Equip your family with a kit that’s easy to use at home or carry along in case you need to evacuate. Be sure to include medicine, a manual can opener, extra blankets, supplies for infants and small children, specialized supplies for the elderly, pet supplies and food, and a batterypowered radio. Visit floridadisaster. org for a more comprehensive list of items you may need. And, don’t forget your masks, hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies! ISSUE OCTOBER 2020
It is also of the utmost importance to be prepared for extended power outages caused by storms if you rely on medical devices. If so, WFEC strongly recommends having a plan in place in the event of extended power outages. The best all-around solution is a backup power generator. If this is not a feasible option, find another location to weather the storm – whether that is a family member’s home, a hotel or a nearby shelter that can address health needs. To identify where the closest health shelter is located, contact your local emergency management office. Also, arrange to have an extra supply of oxygen, medical supplies and batteries on hand for medical devices. In most cases, medical supply companies will work with their customers to deliver supplies ahead of a storm. Having an emergency plan is important, too, if severe weather causes floods, fires or other crisis situations. Should your household need to evacuate and seek shelter elsewhere, do all family members know what to do and where you would go? Are they familiar with steps to take in case you become separated from one another? Is there a plan for letting loved ones know you’re safe? Don’t leave these questions unanswered. We’re connecting you to readiness so you can protect yourself, your loved ones and your home during outages. As your cooperative, we care about our members and their families.

Keep it dry. An ideal location to operate a generator is under an open, canopy-like structure on a surface where water cannot form puddles or drain under the generator. Help minimize the risk of electrical shock during moist or wet weather by using a generator only when necessary, and always dry your hands before touching it. Avoid back-feeding. Icing: 1 (1/2 cup) stick butter 3 ounces cream cheese 1 lb. box confectioner's sugar 1 tsp. vanilla 1 cup nuts Mix butter, cream cheese & vanilla really well. Add sugar, then nuts. This is enough icing to put a thick layer between layers and completely cover the cake.
Directions: Grate potatoes. Using an electric mixer, mix eggs, oil & cinnamon. Gradually add sugar, then flour. Mix well. Add potatoes. Makes 2 layers. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

As your safety connection, we want to help you use this equipment safely. First, it’s important to select a qualified vendor or electrician who can help you determine whether a portable or a permanent generator is best for your home. Unless you’re a licensed electrician, installing a permanent generator is never a DIY project. Peak Hurricane Season is at our Doorstep
I
t’s October and in the Florida Panhandle we know all too well that it is the peak of our Atlantic Hurricane Season. In fact, Florida’s worst storms often come in October due to the very warm water, more humid air in the tropics and a general pattern that favors strong hurricanes across the central Atlantic Ocean. During this time of year, storms tend to form closer to the western Caribbean Sea, eastern Gulf of Mexico and east of Florida in the Atlantic. October cold fronts sweeping into the Gulf also often steer storms toward Florida. Because of this, Floridians are statistically more likely to see a land-falling hurricane in October. Since 1851, 10 of the 17 major hurricanes to strike the U.S. mainland have occurred in Florida in the month of October. At the time this article is being written, the National Hurricane Center is watching 4 systems which could become storms. With this in mind, please make storm preparations in advance. Create a plan and prepare an emergency kit now – not when a storm is knocking at the door. Protect yourself, your loved ones and your home by rounding up the supplies you’ll need in advance. Gather water, nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries, medications, and additional items ahead of time. Equip your family with a kit that’s easy to use at home or carry along in case you need to evacuate. Be sure to include medicine, a manual can opener, extra blankets, supplies for infants and small children, specialized supplies for the elderly, pet supplies and food, and a batterypowered radio. Visit floridadisaster. org for a more comprehensive list of items you may need. And, don’t forget your masks, hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies! ISSUE OCTOBER 2020
It is also of the utmost importance to be prepared for extended power outages caused by storms if you rely on medical devices. If so, WFEC strongly recommends having a plan in place in the event of extended power outages. The best all-around solution is a backup power generator. If this is not a feasible option, find another location to weather the storm – whether that is a family member’s home, a hotel or a nearby shelter that can address health needs. To identify where the closest health shelter is located, contact your local emergency management office. Also, arrange to have an extra supply of oxygen, medical supplies and batteries on hand for medical devices. In most cases, medical supply companies will work with their customers to deliver supplies ahead of a storm. Having an emergency plan is important, too, if severe weather causes floods, fires or other crisis situations. Should your household need to evacuate and seek shelter elsewhere, do all family members know what to do and where you would go? Are they familiar with steps to take in case you become separated from one another? Is there a plan for letting loved ones know you’re safe? Don’t leave these questions unanswered. We’re connecting you to readiness so you can protect yourself, your loved ones and your home during outages. As your cooperative, we care about our members and their families.

Michael. Many of these trees were not initially leaning or dead after the storm, but with weakened root systems, they have become an issue as time passed. In 2019, the co-op reported to members that it would owe in excess of $70 million dollars for damages and expenses caused directly by Hurricane Michael. At this time, WFEC has only received about one-third of the reimbursement from claims that have been submitted to FEMA. One hundred percent of the hurricane recovery fee WFEC collects is used to pay the interest and principle on the emergency line of credit required to cover these expenses until all FEMA reimbursements are received. FEMA is the only government agency from which WFEC will receive any reimbursements. All utilities serving our area, whether electrical or telecommunication, now have some sort of storm recovery fee built into their rates. WFEC is not the only utility to implement a hurricane recovery fee. The recovery fee is charged according to the amount of kilowatt hours (kWh) consumed by each member. This is the fairest way to recover the money needed to pay expenses that were incurred directly by Hurricane Michael. These expenses affect all of us since WFEC is a member-owned, not-for-profit cooperative. Many new members of the cooperative say they were not here during the storm and wonder why they have to pay the recovery fee - this fee is not a punishment for those who were here
or who were not - it is simply to pay the expenses until FEMA reimbursements are received. As your local, member-owned, not-for-profit electric cooperative, WFEC always wants to be transparent with its members about why we are collecting this fee and how we are using it. That’s just how we’re built as a co-op, following the Seven Cooperative Principles. If you, our members, ever have any questions regarding anything about the cooperative, please feel free to call (800) 342-7400 to ask. s each of our members knows, it has been two years since the catastrophic Hurricane Michael forever changed our way of life, our landscape, and destroyed more than just our electric system. WFEC does not want to relive our experiences or revisit traumatic memories. You know. You lived it. We lived it. WFEC worked to repair our electric system as quickly and safely as possible with temporary repairs – but each and every pole and line must be inspected after those temporary repairs - repairs which must still be converted into more permanent repairs and solutions. This is called temporary to permanent work. Power was restored to members within 28 days – a major accomplishment after such damage – but system reliability takes time to rebuild. In essence, after the storm, WFEC restored your power temporarily but still needed to do the permanent work in order to enhance reliability. This is something that began after all temporary repairs were made and it’s a process that continues today and into the foreseeable future. WFEC has contracted with Musgrove, a utility contractor, to assist with this temporary to permanent work. The faster this work is completed, the sooner the reliability of WFEC’s system will return to pre-Hurricane Michael status. It’s important to keep in mind that your co-op has approximately 4,800 miles of overhead powerlines within its four-county service area so it will take years to complete properly. This is a process that WFEC is completely committed to but it will take time. The cooperative has continued to do our regularly scheduled “down line” right-of-way trimming with Asplundh and has also contracted with Burford to remove leaning and dangerous trees left behind by Hurricane
