Cooperatives See the Future

ramatic changes are transforming all aspects of the energy industry. Interest in renewable energy is at an all-time high, and ultimately consumers want greater control over their energy use and payment methods. The prevalence of smart-phone apps and “smart” technology for the home is increasing, and consumers and businesses are showing greater interest in electric vehicles. There’s no denying it: electric utilities will have to make changes to the way they provide energy to accommodate these trends. Luckily, WFEC is uniquely positioned to meet these changing energy needs because we are a cooperative. Co-ops are community-led. October is National Co-op Month, which is the perfect time to highlight the many ways electric cooperatives are unique. Cooperatives are locally governed, looking out for the long-term needs of our members. Electric cooperatives belong to the communities they serve. This heightened community focus allows us to quickly adapt to evolving consumer expectations. Our closeness to the community ensures a better response to these needs because we are led by the Joe Rone, President, Board of Trustees people that we serve. Co-ops are a catalyst for good. Electric co-ops, like WFEC, are a catalyst for good in their communities. Co-ops engage their members to do things that might otherwise be impossible or difficult, like more than 80 years ago when electric co-ops brought power to our area when other utilities did not find it economically feasible. Cooperatives exist to meet a need that was previously unmet in the community, and we are ever striving to Russell Dunaway, EVP & CEO anticipate and plan for the future needs of our members. 102005002 The co-op business model is unique. Energy-Efficient LED Lighting Light your home using the same amount of light for less money

id you know that switching to energy-efficient lighting is one of the fastest ways to reduce your energy bill? An average household dedicates about five percent of its energy budget to lighting. By replacing your home’s five most frequently used light fixtures with models that have earned the ENERGY STAR, you can save about $75 each year. ENERGY STAR-qualified LEDs use only 20-25 percent of the energy and last 1525 times longer than the traditional bulbs they replace. LED bulbs come in a variety of colors and some are dimmable or offer convenient features such as daylight and motion sensors. LEDs work well indoors and outdoors because they are durable and can perform well in cold environments. LED lighting is available in a wide variety of home and industrial products, with the list growing each year: Industrial & Commercial Lighting The high efficiency and directional nature of LEDs make them ideal for many industrial uses. They are becoming increasingly common in street lights, parking garages, walkway lighting and other outdoor areas. They are also being used in refrigerated case lighting, modular lighting and task lighting. Kitchen Under-Cabinet Lighting Since LEDs are small and directional, they are ideal for lighting countertops for cooking and reading recipes. The color can appear more cool or blue than is typically desirable in a kitchen, and there can be some excessive shadowing in some fixtures, so it is important to compare products to find the best fixture for your space. Recessed Downlights Recessed downlights are commonly used in residential kitchens, hallways and bathrooms. They are also commonly used in a number of office and commercial settings. DOE estimates there are at least 500 million recessed downlights installed in U.S. homes and more than 20 million are sold each year. LED Replacement Bulbs With performance improvements and dropping prices, LED lamps can replace 40, 60 and even 75 Watt incandescent bulbs.
