Perhaps you’re planning to build a new deck to enjoy those cool autumn evenings. If any of your fall projects require digging––such as planting trees or shrubs, or setting posts––remember to dial 811 first. 3438001 Underground utilities, such as buried gas, water and electric lines, can be a shovel thrust away from turning a fall project into a disaster. Play it safe by dialing 811 to find out where utility lines run on your property. Your call will be routed to a local “one call” center. Tell the operator where you’re planning to dig and what type of work you will be doing, and affected local utilities will be notified. In a few days, a locator will arrive to designate the approximate location of any underground lines, pipes and cables. These areas will be marked with flags or paint so you’ll know what’s below. Then the safe digging can begin.

Changes at Holmes County Public Library Holmes County Public Library is a member of the PPLCS Co-op. Co-op libraries include Holmes County, Jackson County, Calhoun County – this means cards, books and other library items from these libraries are accepted at each location. Due to some changes, we are asking that patrons are patient while we update our database and issue new cards. The major change taking place is that the Washington County Public Library will no longer be a part of the co-op system. Although many homeowners tackling do-it-yourself digging projects are aware of “Call Before You Dig” services, the majority don’t take advantage of the service. A national survey showed that only 50 percent of homeowners called to have their lines marked before starting digging projects, according to the Common Ground Alliance (CGA), a federally mandated group of underground utility and damage prevention industry professionals. CGA data also shows that an underground utility line is damaged every six minutes in the U.S. because someone decided to dig without first dialing 811. Even simple tasks like installing a new mailbox post can damage utility lines, which can disrupt service to an entire neighborhood, harm diggers and potentially result in fines and repair costs. Never assume the location or depth of underground utility lines. There’s no need: the 811 service is free, prevents the inconvenience of having utilities interrupted and can help you avoid serious injury. Begin by walking around and making a list of all the places where leaks could occur. Outside your home, you should inspect all areas where two different building materials meet. Pay particular attention to gaps where the foundation meets walls. Inspect all exterior corners where siding and chimneys meet and areas where foundations and exterior bricks or siding meet. Plug and caulk holes or penetrations for faucets, pipes, electrical outlets and wiring. Look for cracks and holes in the mortar, foundation, and siding and seal them with the appropriate material. 87488001 Another place you should check for air leaks is along baseboards or the edges of flooring and where walls meet ceilings. See if air flows through electrical outlets, switch plates, window frames, baseboards, weather-stripping around doors, fireplace dampers and attic hatches. Make sure you also check windows and doors for air leaks. Can you rattle them? Movement means possible air leaks. If you see daylight around door and window frames, then the door or window leaks. Seal these leaks by caulking or weather-stripping. Consider replacing old windows and doors with newer, high-performance ones. If that is too costly, install low-cost plastic sheets over windows instead. A creative way to find leaks is to pressurize your home using fans then walk around and feel for air leaks. They’ll identify themselves if you place your hand over areas where you suspect leaks. Placing a little moisture on your hand intensifies the effect, making it even easier to find them. Check Insulation Levels See if the level of attic and wall insulation is at least the minimum recommended amount. Checking a wall’s insulation level may be tricky. Peek into them by removing the faceplate from an electrical outlet. Select an exterior wall and turn off the circuit breakers, then test the outlets by plugging something in to make certain they are not “hot.” Next, gently probe into the wall with a stick or screwdriver. If you

How to Insulate Your Water Heater

ust like insulating your walls or roof, insulating your water heater tank is an easy and inexpensive way to improve its efficiency and save you money. If your water tank is new, chances Cover the whole tank except are it is already insulated. Step 3: Leave the top of the water heater open. It is best to replace bulbs with CFLs or LEDs and keep them off when not needed. When considering a new appliance purchase, look for the most efficient models. If you conduct a DIY audit and implement some of the changes recommended above, but are still experiencing problems or higher than usual electric bills, you may have another problem. he cost of generating electricity is constantly changing. The kilowatt-hour delivered at dinner time costs more to generate than the one delivered at midnight. There are two major factors that affect the price of electricity – the price of fuel needed to generate power (such as coal or natural gas) and the demand for power at any given time. Simply put, when the demand for energy goes up, so do the costs. West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) works to reduce these peaks, helping to lower the cost of energy for our members. WFEC, along with our wholesale power provider, PowerSouth, must match the amount of electricity generated to the amount being consumed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. As consumers use more electricity, we must increase the amount of resources available to supply that energy. For us, peaks are most likely to occur on the coldest mornings in winter between 5:00 and 9:00 a.m. and on the hottest afternoons of the summer between 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. These are the times of day when our members use the most energy in their homes. Over time, your cooperative sets higher and higher peaks, creating the need to purchase capacity that is more expensive. Although our summers in Northwest Florida are hot and humid, WFEC continues to set a winter peak – the most electricity used at any one time of the year. 45512001 Because peak demand has a great influence on energy rates, all of our members have a stake in reducing the peak. All members can help lower peak demand by changing when we use electricity in our homes. By changing our usage patterns, we can all work together to lower energy costs. During peak hours: • Set your thermostat to 68 degrees during winter months. • Don’t do laundry, run the dishwasher, iron, clean, etc. during non-peak hours.

Peak hours are 5:00 – 9:00 a.m. during winter months. • Avoid using the oven during peak hours. A microwave is much more efficient. • Don’t take showers or baths. • Unplug unnecessary electric appliances and equipment. • Only use the cold water cycle to wash clothes. • Conserve electricity by turning off lights when you leave a room. Observing energy efficiency habits can also help reduce your energy usage. Here are some tips to consider implementing into your family’s routine this winter: • Add carpeting or rugs to retain heat and add comfort, especially if there is little or no floor insulation. • Keep furniture, carpeting and curtains from blocking vents and return air ducts. • Raise temperatures on your thermostat slowly to keep your bill lower. Quickly raising your heat pump’s temperature activates the heat strip, which uses additional energy. • Space heaters are great for spot heating, but they are much less energy efficient than heat pumps. If you choose to use portable heaters, keep them away from flammable materials. Never use an oven to heat your home. Kitchen ovens were never designed for heating homes - only cooking food. With gas ranges, carbon monoxide is a dangerous, odorless gas that could be hanging around in your kitchen. Carbon monoxide is deadly. • Open drapes during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home and close them at night to reduce the chill you may feel from cold windows. • Keep heat in by closing your attic, basement, garage and exterior doors to prevent cold drafts. • Change your air filters. Dirty filters make your heating system work harder, using more energy. Simply replace your disposable filter or clean your washable one every month.
