ctober was National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and you might have noticed our linemen wearing a new accessory while they worked – pink hard hats! “We hope that people will take notice and we can relay the purpose of wearing the pink hard hats to them,” said Tony Howard, a service man in the Bonifay district office and 21-year co-op employee. “Wearing a pink hat sometimes gets people’s attention and we get the opportunity to tell them why and give them some more information and encourage them to get the screenings they need,” he continued. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born in the U.S. today will get breast cancer at some point. The good news is, when breast cancer is detected early, in the localized stage, the 5-year survival rate is 98 percent. Our linemen and all employees encourage women & men of all ages to seek the type of screening appropriate for their age. Early detection is the key, so discuss with your doctor what screening is most appropriate for you. “Were you surprised to see the majority of our co-op lineman wearing pink hard hats for Breast Cancer Awareness Month? No, these guys have often supported cancer-related fundraisers and benefits. In fact, on several occasions they have cooked and sold BBQ plates, donated their sick leave, and contributed their money, to raise thousands of dollars for families struggling with the financial burden of cancer treatment. Our cooperative and our communities are blessed to have these men assisting in the cancer awareness effort,” said Russell Dunaway, Executive Vice President & CEO of West Florida Electric. 91639002 We sincerely hope that seeing our linemen with their pink hard hats inspired someone to learn more about breast cancer, conduct a self-exam or seek screening. “We want to pray for those who are suffering and have lost loved ones to this disease. This program provides rebates to our members for the purchase of qualifying high-efficiency heat pumps to replace lower-efficiency units. To take advantage of the program, your new unit must be sized properly. A Manual J calculation must be performed by a certified licensed HVAC contractor or a WFEC Energy Services Representative. This load calculation is mandatory to participate in the rebate program. Rebate amounts vary depending on the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) of the unit. FEC has a new 24-hour outage hotline number solely for reporting power outages. The number, 1.844.OUTAGE1 (1.844.688.2431), is the only number you will need to report a power outage at your location. It’s also super easy to remember! Because of the new phone number, we want to remind you that now is a great time to take a moment to update your WFEC account information. During outages, a key piece of information used to identify your location is a phone number. That’s why it’s so important for WFEC to have your most recent phone number on file. If you call from a number not listed on your account, our system won’t recognize the location. This could delay your power restoration during storms. You don’t want that to happen and neither do we, so please make sure all of your account information is completely updated, including adding cell phone numbers or any numbers you might call from to report an outage. To make updating your account information easy, WFEC has provided a form that you can cut out and send to the cooperative with your payment or mail to P.O. Box 127, Graceville, FL 32440. WFEC also has some useful tools you can use to find out more about power outages, including an online outage map. You can find links to the map on the cooperative’s website (www.westflorida.coop) and WFEC’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/wfeca). The cooperative strives to keep members informed on social media, but oftentimes, the cause of an outage or estimate on restoration times cannot be provided. The cooperative’s social media pages are also not the proper place to report an outage because of safety concerns.
