n November 2015, WFEC began conducting a contest for a $150 bill credit for any members who mailed in updated account information. Hundreds of members updated their account info during this promotion, which lasted through the last week of March 2016. Myra Hurst of Cottondale was the winner of the bill credit. It is vital for WFEC members to update their account information for outage reporting purposes.

WFEC Announces Trustee Election Results
A
s a not-for-profit electric cooperative, West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) is owned by its members and each of those members has a voice in how the co-op is operated. That’s part of the cooperative difference. Each year, West Florida Electric holds an election for three seats on its Board of Trustees. Every member of WFEC receives an election packet in the mail which contains, among other materials, an official notice of the annual meeting, a nominating committee report and candidate profiles for each district up for election. The packet also includes a ballot and pre-addressed postage paid return envelope. Ballots were due back to J. Philip Tyler, Certified Public Accountant’s office in Marianna on Wednesday, April 13 at 5:00 p.m. This year, WFEC members elected trustees to represent them from Districts 2 and 3 through the mail ballot process. District 1 ran unopposed. Results of that election are as follows: District 1: Ellis Nichols – unopposed District 2: Eugene Alford – 2,494 Ben Maddox – 1,162
Panhandle Watermelon Festival Pageant Friday, June 10 & Saturday, June 11; 6:30 p.m. Washington County Ag Center, 1424 Jackson Avenue, Chipley The 60th Annual pageant entry fee is $60 with an additional $10 fee for the photogenic competition (limit of one photo per contestant). Pesky Scammers at it Again in Our Area! Home/Farm And across the state...
T
hose pesky scammers are at it again in our area! WFEC recently received a call from a member reporting that they received a call from “Gulf Electric” who was calling to verify that he received notice that his meter was being changed out and they were making sure someone would be home to let them in. The member reported that the caller had his address and phone number, but could not verify how his account was listed. Once this member hung up, he called the number back and it was answered, “Magic Jack.” At another Florida co-op, the members are getting calls telling them they have a new energy provider. The scammers are telling members that a new electric utility is taking over as their electric provider and members are being directed to make payments to the new company. The callers are falsely claiming to be from Arcadia Power, a real company that markets wind power to consumers, but makes it clear on its website that you don’t switch your electricity provider when you sign up. 59422002 These are just two examples of the many ways scammers are attempting to fool co-op members across the state and country. Please remember that WFEC will seldom, if ever, initiate calls to members. The best practice is to never give your personal information to anyone over the phone. If you ever have a question about whether a person represents the cooperative, please give us a call at (800) 342-7400 with any questions and to verify if the caller is a co-op representative. Also keep in mind that the cooperative does not use a third-party to collect debt. “Scams keep coming around time and time again, and the scammers behind them are getting more creative and more aggressive with their tactics each time,” said Terry Mullen, WFEC Manager of Marketing & Communications. “We want to encourage our members to be aware of the different tactics used by the scammers to take advantage of them so they can avoid falling into their traps,” he continued.

When working or mowing around meter bases, you should also pay close attention. Equipment like mowers and weed eaters can damage energized wires. Electrical wires connected to meter bases should always be run in conduit, but this pipe can become damaged and become a hazard as mentioned above. 37369001 Some other hazards you should look for include low lines, damaged weather heads (make sure covers are on connectors), properly sealed meter bases and exposed wires inside or outside of your home. Open breaker boxes also pose a threat – anyone could touch the energized parts when they are open. The cooperative does have a hazard recognition program that is designed to recognize and identify many of the hazards mentioned above, but if you think you see a potential hazard, contact the cooperative at 800.342.7400.

ower lines beside roadways and homes are commonplace to most of us. So commonplace that many of us don’t pay attention to their locations. Do you know what type of powerlines are located close to your homes? Are they overhead lines or underground lines? How do you even tell? And why is it important that you know? “You should always be familiar with the type of power lines located around your home – whether that is an overhead line or an Pad mount transformer underground line,” said Donnie Worley, WFEC Manager of Loss Control & Risk Management. “Not knowing this information could pose a risk to you or your family members,” he continued. To identify the type of electric service on your property, first look for transformers on the ground – these pad mount transformers are usually green boxes. Having this type of transformer indicates that you have underground utilities. This may seem elementary, but if your service wire is connected to a mass pipe above your roof, then you have an overhead service at your home. If you see a pad mount transformer that has been knocked off its base, contact the co-op immediately because exposed wires or damage to the transformer itself could pose a safety risk. The cooperative buries underground primary lines about four feet deep, while secondary lines are buried about two feet deep. If you’re digging around an underground primary line, before reaching the line itself you should see red tape that says “caution buried electrical line below.” If you see this stop digging immediately! Sometimes erosion or excavating in the area may cause you to see the red tape or the conduit these lines are buried in – make sure you let someone at the co-op know if this is the case. If you are unsure where the utilities are located on your property, it is a good idea to call 811 to have them located before attempting any major projects that require digging on your property. 34507001 Pay attention to your surroundings when working outside. ower lines beside roadways and homes are commonplace to most of us. So commonplace that many of us don’t pay attention to their locations. Do you know what type of powerlines are located close to your homes? Are they overhead lines or underground lines? How do you even tell? And why is it important that you know? “You should always be familiar with the type of power lines located around your home – whether that is an overhead line or an Pad mount transformer underground line,” said Donnie Worley, WFEC Manager of Loss Control & Risk Management. “Not knowing this information could pose a risk to you or your family members,” he continued. To identify the type of electric service on your property, first look for transformers on the ground – these pad mount transformers are usually green boxes. Having this type of transformer indicates that you have underground utilities. This may seem elementary, but if your service wire is connected to a mass pipe above your roof, then you have an overhead service at your home. If you see a pad mount transformer that has been knocked off its base, contact the co-op immediately because exposed wires or damage to the transformer itself could pose a safety risk. The cooperative buries underground primary lines about four feet deep, while secondary lines are buried about two feet deep. If you’re digging around an underground primary line, before reaching the line itself you should see red tape that says “caution buried electrical line below.” If you see this stop digging immediately! Sometimes erosion or excavating in the area may cause you to see the red tape or the conduit these lines are buried in – make sure you let someone at the co-op know if this is the case. If you are unsure where the utilities are located on your property, it is a good idea to call 811 to have them located before attempting any major projects that require digging on your property. 34507001 Pay attention to your surroundings when working outside. Did you realize that gardening tools extend your reach distance and could cause you to come into contact with energized power lines? This could happen before you even know it.

When working or mowing around meter bases, you should also pay close attention. Equipment like mowers and weed eaters can damage energized wires. Electrical wires connected to meter bases should always be run in conduit, but this pipe can become damaged and become a hazard as mentioned above. 37369001 Some other hazards you should look for include low lines, damaged weather heads (make sure covers are on connectors), properly sealed meter bases and exposed wires inside or outside of your home. Open breaker boxes also pose a threat – anyone could touch the energized parts when they are open. The cooperative does have a hazard recognition program that is designed to recognize and identify many of the hazards mentioned above, but if you think you see a potential hazard, contact the cooperative at 800.342.7400.

Pesky Scammers at it Again in Our Area! Home/Farm And across the state...
T
hose pesky scammers are at it again in our area! WFEC recently received a call from a member reporting that they received a call from “Gulf Electric” who was calling to verify that he received notice that his meter was being changed out and they were making sure someone would be home to let them in. The member reported that the caller had his address and phone number, but could not verify how his account was listed. Once this member hung up, he called the number back and it was answered, “Magic Jack.” At another Florida co-op, the members are getting calls telling them they have a new energy provider. The scammers are telling members that a new electric utility is taking over as their electric provider and members are being directed to make payments to the new company. The callers are falsely claiming to be from Arcadia Power, a real company that markets wind power to consumers, but makes it clear on its website that you don’t switch your electricity provider when you sign up. 59422002 These are just two examples of the many ways scammers are attempting to fool co-op members across the state and country. Please remember that WFEC will seldom, if ever, initiate calls to members. The best practice is to never give your personal information to anyone over the phone. If you ever have a question about whether a person represents the cooperative, please give us a call at (800) 342-7400 with any questions and to verify if the caller is a co-op representative. Also keep in mind that the cooperative does not use a third-party to collect debt. “Scams keep coming around time and time again, and the scammers behind them are getting more creative and more aggressive with their tactics each time,” said Terry Mullen, WFEC Manager of Marketing & Communications. “We want to encourage our members to be aware of the different tactics used by the scammers to take advantage of them so they can avoid falling into their traps,” he continued.

WFEC Announces Trustee Election Results
A
s a not-for-profit electric cooperative, West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) is owned by its members and each of those members has a voice in how the co-op is operated. That’s part of the cooperative difference. Each year, West Florida Electric holds an election for three seats on its Board of Trustees. Every member of WFEC receives an election packet in the mail which contains, among other materials, an official notice of the annual meeting, a nominating committee report and candidate profiles for each district up for election. The packet also includes a ballot and pre-addressed postage paid return envelope. Ballots were due back to J. Philip Tyler, Certified Public Accountant’s office in Marianna on Wednesday, April 13 at 5:00 p.m. This year, WFEC members elected trustees to represent them from Districts 2 and 3 through the mail ballot process. District 1 ran unopposed. Results of that election are as follows: District 1: Ellis Nichols – unopposed District 2: Eugene Alford – 2,494 Ben Maddox – 1,162

n November 2015, WFEC began conducting a contest for a $150 bill credit for any members who mailed in updated account information. Hundreds of members updated their account info during this promotion, which lasted through the last week of March 2016. Myra Hurst of Cottondale was the winner of the bill credit. It is vital for WFEC members to update their account information for outage reporting purposes.
