Special Needs Registry Shelter Program Home/Farm (cont.)

he Special Needs Registry Shelter Program is designed to provide hurricane or disaster related evacuation assistance and care for those without other alternatives. If you need transportation assistance or have a health/medical condition that requires medical attention while at a shelter, you should register for this program. 65510001 If you are a client of a hospice or home health organization, make sure they have already registered you into the system. If you or a family member is disabled and may need assistance at a shelter, you must contact your local Emergency Management Office to register for this program at one of the following numbers: Calhoun County: (850) 674-8075 Holmes County: (850) 547-1112 Washington County: (850) 638-6203 *Jackson County: (850) 482-9678 *Jackson County now has an online registry: www.emergencymanager.org. You will need to create a password login to access the portal. If you have any questions or do not have Internet access, please contact the Jackson County Emergency Management Office at the number above. West Florida Electric also has a program for its members who require life support or other medical devices. WFEC does not guarantee uninterrupted service or assign priority status to members who depend on electrical equipment for medical necessity, but members can sign up for the co-op’s medically essential service list. This service is used to contact members when there is a planned outage to perform routine maintenance or upgrade lines and equipment. Even though WFEC does give these accounts special consideration during planned outages, damages to our power distribution system must be repaired first during emergency situations before attention can be turned to individual accounts. When severe storms hit our area, there is no way to determine how long electric service will be disrupted, so it is very important for WFEC members who require life support or other medical devices to make arrangements for their medical needs in advance. Members with critical care needs are strongly encouraged to have backup plans to move to locations with power during an emergency or have a back-up power generator on hand for their use. To sign up for medically essential service, have your doctor complete a medically essential service form. These forms can be picked up at any district office or downloaded from the cooperative’s website. How to operate generators safely

he safety of our members and our employees is a top priority at West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC), especially during dangerous times like when storms hit our area. We rush to your aid as soon as weather conditions allow our lineworkers to travel and make repairs safely during outage situations caused by Mother Nature. Standby electric generators are a great way to provide you with an extra sense of security during Florida’s unpredictable weather and the occasional power outages resulting from that weather. Generators are a convenient source of power around homes or businesses. It is very important for the safety of our linemen that generators be properly installed and used safely. Even small, portable electric generators - if they’re used improperly - can threaten your safety and the safety of our employees working on the electrical system. “Back Feeding” - A Dangerous Condition: Improperly connecting a portable generator to electrical wiring can produce “back feed” - a dangerous current that can electrocute or critically injure you or others. Back feed into power lines from a generator could create “hot” power lines during an outage. Linemen who expect the line to be de-energized could be injured. One good way to avoid back feeding is to install a double-pole, double-throw transfer-switch. A qualified electrical contractor can install this transfer switch so that dangerous back feeding can be prevented. 70921001 Co-op employees are not the only ones in danger when a portable generator is used improperly. Generator owners themselves may be at risk of electrocution, fire injury, property damage or carbon monoxide poisoning if they do not follow the necessary safety rules. We urge you to follow these and all manufacturer suggested safety guidelines when using a portable generator: • Never connect a generator directly to your home’s wiring unless your home has been wired for generator use.
