Pressure canning is the only recommended way to safely can vegetables, meats, poultry and seafood. If you are looking to get started or just want a refresher, make plans to attend. This course is designed to help you better understand the science of how canning works, proper food safety techniques, differences in canning methods, and how to properly preserve food using a pressure canner. The cost is $20 per person and participants will be able to take home a sample jar of green beans prepared in class and a set of canning utensils. Per UF policy, all attendees must wear a mask and socially distance. Due to class size limitations, pre-registration is required - no walk-ins are permitted. Tree Trimming Improves Service for All
M
ost residents of our area love the natural beauty that surrounds us. We are fortunate to have so many trees that offer beauty, shade and a habitat for all sorts of birds and other wildlife. At WFEC, we strive to balance maintaining beautiful surroundings and ensuring a reliable power supply by keeping power lines clear in rights-ofway (ROW). While we recognize and appreciate the beauty of trees, there are three main benefits to tree trimming in ROW areas. A right-of-way is the land we use to construct, maintain, replace or repair underground and overhead power lines. Rights-of-way enable the co-op to provide clearance from trees and other obstructions that could hinder power line installation, maintenance or operation. ROW areas are typically on public lands or located near a business or home. Regardless, WFEC must be able to maintain the power lines above and below the ROW. The overall goal of our vegetation management program is to provide reliable power to our members while maintaining the beauty of our community. Protect the generator and yourself by operating it in a dry, outdoor space. An ideal location is under an open, canopy-like structure on a surface where water cannot form puddles or drain under the generator. Help minimize the risk of electrical shock during moist or wet weather by using a generator only when necessary, and always dry your hands before touching it.

Avoid backfeeding. NEVER plug the generator into the wall. Instead, use a heavyduty extension cord to plug appliances into your portable generator.

Turn the generator on before plugging appliances into it. Once the generator

aving a generator to power your home during an outage can be a lifesaver. But if not used correctly, a generator can end your life or the lives of those restoring your power. As your safety connection, we want to help you use this equipment safely. First, select a qualified vendor or electrician who can help you determine whether a portable or a permanent generator is best for your home. Unless you’re a licensed electrician, installing a permanent generator is never a DIY project. This type of generator must have a transfer switch that prevents energy from leaving your generator and going back out onto the utility’s electrical equipment, or “backfeeding.” Backfeeding can be fatal to a line worker or others near downed power lines. Only a qualified professional should install your generator and transfer switch and connect the equipment directly to your home’s wiring. If using a portable generator, keep these tips in mind:

Balance Your Family's Comfort & Budget
A
ir conditioned homes provide a refreshing escape from the summer's heat but if you’re not careful your energy bills may increase drastically during the hottest months of the year. Setting a reasonable temperature in your home requires a balance between comfort and your financial bottom line. The lower you set your thermostat in the summer, the higher your energy bills could be. But, you can shoot for a temperature that keeps you and your family comfortable and will save you money. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends setting thermostats to 78 degrees when you are home. This allows you to stay cool and avoid higher bills. But, what if 78 degrees is too hot for your comfort level? Here are some ideas to help you lower your energy bills this summer. Although 78 degrees might sound unreasonably high, you can try an experiment where you set your thermostat to 81 degrees for a few hours to see how your family reacts. Over the next days, drop the temperature two or three degrees until you reach 71 degrees. After that, you can set the thermostat to what you determine is the average of your family’s comfort zone. Nighttime is another great opportunity to conserve. When you go to sleep, your temperature lowers and heat radiates from your extremities. The National Institute of Health found the best sleep happens as the body reaches “thermoneutrality” when environmental temperatures are at 86 degrees uncovered or 60-66 degrees when covered up. To enjoy a good night’s sleep during the summer raise your thermostat to a warmer setting – around 80 degrees – and use lighter bedding and sleepwear. Using a ceiling fan will also help keep you cool. Even if you keep your home a few degrees colder, you can make choice about how you spend your money and the good news is you can take other steps to save without making yourself miserable during the hot summer months. Turning up your thermostat when you’re gone is a great way to save energy. Set a higher inside temp PAGE 8
that’s close to the outside temp. This slows down the flow of heat into your home and makes it easier for your A/C to work efficiently. If you set your thermostat 7 to 10 degrees above your normal setting while away, it could save as much as 10 percent. High humidity can also turn a hot day into something much harder to endure because your sweat glands don’t work as efficiently when there is more moisture in the air. Sweat helps maintain your body temp. Air conditioners are good at reducing relative humidity, especially if your home is sealed well. Dehumidifiers can help achieve lower humidity levels if you want to save some of the burden on your air conditioner. Also try installing a programmable thermostat to automatically raise the temperature when you leave the house. You can set it to start cooling your house before you are scheduled to get home. Balance Your Family's Comfort & Budget

ir conditioned homes provide a refreshing escape from the summer's heat but if you’re not careful your energy bills may increase drastically during the hottest months of the year. Setting a reasonable temperature in your home requires a balance between comfort and your financial bottom line. The lower you set your thermostat in the summer, the higher your energy bills could be. But, you can shoot for a temperature that keeps you and your family comfortable and will save you money. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends setting thermostats to 78 degrees when you are home. This allows you to stay cool and avoid higher bills. But, what if 78 degrees is too hot for your comfort level? Here are some ideas to help you lower your energy bills this summer. Although 78 degrees might sound unreasonably high, you can try an experiment where you set your thermostat to 81 degrees for a few hours to see how your family reacts. Over the next days, drop the temperature two or three degrees until you reach 71 degrees. After that, you can set the thermostat to what you determine is the average of your family’s comfort zone. Nighttime is another great opportunity to conserve. When you go to sleep, your temperature lowers and heat radiates from your extremities. The National Institute of Health found the best sleep happens as the body reaches “thermoneutrality” when environmental temperatures are at 86 degrees uncovered or 60-66 degrees when covered up. To enjoy a good night’s sleep during the summer raise your thermostat to a warmer setting – around 80 degrees – and use lighter bedding and sleepwear. Using a ceiling fan will also help keep you cool. Even if you keep your home a few degrees colder, you can make choice about how you spend your money and the good news is you can take other steps to save without making yourself miserable during the hot summer months. Turning up your thermostat when you’re gone is a great way to save energy. Set a higher inside temp PAGE 8
that’s close to the outside temp. This slows down the flow of heat into your home and makes it easier for your A/C to work efficiently. If you set your thermostat 7 to 10 degrees above your normal setting while away, it could save as much as 10 percent. High humidity can also turn a hot day into something much harder to endure because your sweat glands don’t work as efficiently when there is more moisture in the air. Sweat helps maintain your body temp. Air conditioners are good at reducing relative humidity, especially if your home is sealed well. Dehumidifiers can help achieve lower humidity levels if you want to save some of the burden on your air conditioner. Also try installing a programmable thermostat to automatically raise the temperature when you leave the house. You can set it to start cooling your house before you are scheduled to get home. Protect the generator and yourself by operating it in a dry, outdoor space. An ideal location is under an open, canopy-like structure on a surface where water cannot form puddles or drain under the generator. Help minimize the risk of electrical shock during moist or wet weather by using a generator only when necessary, and always dry your hands before touching it.

Avoid backfeeding. NEVER plug the generator into the wall. Instead, use a heavyduty extension cord to plug appliances into your portable generator.

aving a generator to power your home during an outage can be a lifesaver. But if not used correctly, a generator can end your life or the lives of those restoring your power. As your safety connection, we want to help you use this equipment safely. First, select a qualified vendor or electrician who can help you determine whether a portable or a permanent generator is best for your home. Unless you’re a licensed electrician, installing a permanent generator is never a DIY project. This type of generator must have a transfer switch that prevents energy from leaving your generator and going back out onto the utility’s electrical equipment, or “backfeeding.” Backfeeding can be fatal to a line worker or others near downed power lines. Only a qualified professional should install your generator and transfer switch and connect the equipment directly to your home’s wiring. If using a portable generator, keep these tips in mind:

Pressure canning is the only recommended way to safely can vegetables, meats, poultry and seafood. If you are looking to get started or just want a refresher, make plans to attend. This course is designed to help you better understand the science of how canning works, proper food safety techniques, differences in canning methods, and how to properly preserve food using a pressure canner. The cost is $20 per person and participants will be able to take home a sample jar of green beans prepared in class and a set of canning utensils. Per UF policy, all attendees must wear a mask and socially distance. Due to class size limitations, pre-registration is required - no walk-ins are permitted. Tree Trimming Improves Service for All
M
ost residents of our area love the natural beauty that surrounds us. We are fortunate to have so many trees that offer beauty, shade and a habitat for all sorts of birds and other wildlife. At WFEC, we strive to balance maintaining beautiful surroundings and ensuring a reliable power supply by keeping power lines clear in rights-ofway (ROW). While we recognize and appreciate the beauty of trees, there are three main benefits to tree trimming in ROW areas. A right-of-way is the land we use to construct, maintain, replace or repair underground and overhead power lines. Rights-of-way enable the co-op to provide clearance from trees and other obstructions that could hinder power line installation, maintenance or operation. ROW areas are typically on public lands or located near a business or home. Regardless, WFEC must be able to maintain the power lines above and below the ROW. The overall goal of our vegetation management program is to provide reliable power to our members while maintaining the beauty of our community. Proactive vegetation management benefits co-op members in three tangible ways. continued on page 4
