May not have been found guilty of a felony, regardless of whether adjudication was withheld or found guilty of a misdemeanor involving the illegal possession, sale or use of a controlled substance. In addition, the WFEC trustees have established a set of minimum qualifications for consideration of an appointment as follows: 1. Trustees should be capable of receiving electronic mail. 2. Trustees should make every attempt to become a Cooperative Certified Director within a three-year period. 3. Trustees should make themselves available to the cooperative a minimum of 24 days per year. These days include regular and special meetings of the board, committee meetings, association meetings and trustee training classes.

Patrick Retires from Board of Trustees

ohn Patrick has retired from West Florida Electric Cooperative's Board of Trustees after serving the members of the cooperative as the District 3 representative for 19 years. The Board of Trustees recognized Patrick at the April board meeting for his many years of loyal, dedicated and committed service to the members and employees of West Florida Electric Cooperative. "When I first met Mr. Patrick, we had an immediate bond and much in common being cattleman and private pilots," said Ty Peel, Executive Vice President & CEO of West Florida Electric. "Mr. Patrick is well-respected by all and always made board decisions based on the best interest of the cooperative and its members. Mr. Patrick cares very much for West Florida Electric and all the members he represented during his tenure on the board of trustees. He will be missed," he continued. He served as a past Vice President and past Secretary-Treasurer and represented the board on the Florida Electric Cooperative Association board as the alternate and then as a board member. He completed training through the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association for the

Credentialed Cooperative Director Certificate and Board Leadership Certificate during his tenure on the board. Patrick has been a WFEC member for nearly 60 years and lives in northeast Jackson County where he has been a cattle farmer and buyer for many years. He and his wife, Carolyn Fay Adams have been married nearly 60 years and have three sons, three grandsons and several great-grandchildren. He is a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. 12687002 "I enjoyed serving on the board of trustees with Mr. Patrick for many years. His knowledge and wisdom will be sorely missed by myself and my fellow trustees," said Joe Rone, President of the Board of Trustees.

Pooser Joins Board of Trustees

ackie Pooser is your newest WFEC Trustee. She takes over the District 3 seat left vacant after John Patrick’s retirement from the board. She ran for the District 3 board seat unopposed in the cooperative’s recent election. “I am very appreciative of being elected to serve on the board and for the opportunity to work with the board and staff in service to all the members of West Florida Electric Cooperative,” said Pooser. She has been in the indigent criminal deJackie Pooser fense profession since 1971 working with the State of Florida Office of the Public Defender of the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit. From 1971 to 1992, she worked with Attorney Herman Laramore in his civil law practice. As Administrative Director of the Public Defender’s Office, she handles a variety of duties including personnel management, human resources, purchasing, county budget preparation and more for the six counties served by the Public Defender’s Office. These counties are Bay, Calhoun, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson and Washington. In her 49th year working for the Public Defender’s Office, she has worked longer than any other employee with the Public Defender’s Office throughout the entire State of Florida in any capacity. Pooser has been a member of West Florida Electric Cooperative for over 17 years and is married to Larry Pooser, Sr., a retired realtor. The couple attends Rivertown Community Church in Marianna and have four children, Larry Pooser, Jr., Ali Wiggins, Leslie MacLaren and Julia Bennett. They also have ten grandchildren. “I look forward to successfully working with the other board members to maintain the high standards already in place in all areas of the management of West Florida Electric for both normal, day-to-day business functions and in the recovery efforts related to Hurricane Michael. I will strive to do this in the most cost-effective manner for all members of the cooperative,” Pooser said. Co-op Still Recovering from Michael

lthough Hurricane Michael hit our area months ago, your co-op is still in recovery mode. We realize our members continue experiencing power outages - possibly more than usual. We'd like to ask our members to continue being patient as cooperative crews find and address some of the issues caused by Hurricane Michael that are still impacting our electric distribution system and causing outages. When cooperative representatives said the system was "rebuilt" after Hurricane Michael, we meant that we "repaired and replaced poles, lines and equipment" as quickly as possible to restore power to every member who could safely receive electricity. That means that our line crews are still going to find things that need repairing as time goes by. This is a process that is ongoing and will be for quite some time to come. Repairs are still being made daily to bring our system back to its pre-hurricane status. As always, the major cause of any outage on our distribution system is usually weather-related. Lately our area has been experiencing thunderstorms with high winds and lightning quite often. This is our typical weather pattern for spring and summer - it's nothing unusual. Lightning can hit equipment in the substation, on lines or poles and cause a lot of damage. Winds can also cause a lot of problems. One of the major issues right now is that high winds are blowing leaning trees and trees that are resting on other trees onto power lines. The wind is also loosening branches that were broken or damaged by the hurricane and causing them to fall now, months later. Unfortunately, weather-related ISSUE JUNE 2019

outages will continue happening. There is simply no way to prevent it. When those power outages do occur, our linemen are ready to answer the call and get to work making repairs as quickly but safely as possible. Make Plans for Hurricane Season Now

s residents of the Florida Panhandle, WFEC members know firsthand the devastation that a hurricane can bring with it and how fast some of these storms can form. After Hurricane Michael crushed the area last year most of us realize the importance of being prepared during hurricane season more than ever before. Here are some tips to remember when you're preparing for hurricane season this year: 94231001 1. Prepare now. As we discovered with Hurricane Michael, some storms can strengthen very quickly, leading to a rush for supplies and possible shortages. 2. Gather enough items and stock up on enough essentials to build a disaster supply kit to last you and your family a minimum of 7 days (perhaps longer). 3. Have a place to go. Don’t delay your departure or wait. Leave as soon as possible if you’re evacuating to avoid traffic congestion and long travel times. 4. Make hotel reservations before you leave. 5. Fill vehicles up with gas before you leave. 6. Have a plan for your pet. Assemble a portable pet disaster kit with food, water, medicines, proof of vaccinations, carriers, leashes, harnesses, beds and toys. Also have an updated photo of your pet in case you are separated. What should be included in your disaster supply kit?

• Flashlights & extra batteries • Pillows, blankets, sleeping bags • Clothes & sturdy shoes to protect you from debris • First aid kit, prescription medications & other medicines • Battery operated NOAA weather radio • Toiletries • Cleaning supplies: garbage bags, moisture wipes, other items for sanitizing • Cash: banks & ATMs may be closed for extended periods of time after a disaster

• Important documents: seal them in a waterproof container & save them electronically. These items include insurance & medical records, bank account numbers, social security card, ID cards, etc. • Tools • Pet care items (see #6 for more ideas) Some additional items to consider when planning for storms include purchasing flood insurance, registering for the special needs shelter program and identifying local shelter locations. Flood damage is not usually covered by homeowners insurance. Check your policy to be sure. The Special Needs Registry Shelter Program is designed to provide hurricane or disaster related evacuation assistance and care for those without other alternatives. If you or a loved one need transportation assistance or have a health/medical condition that requires medical attention while at a shelter, you should register for this program. If you are a client of a hospice or home health care agency, you should ensure that they have already registered you into the system. This registration must be updated annually. If you or someone you know has a special condition affecting eyesight, hearing, speech, walking, breathing or an emotional condition and would need assistance during evacuations and sheltering, please contact your local emergency management office. 78329003

The past three years have been rough on hurricane-prone regions, without a doubt, but according to early reports from Colorado State University, 2019 may bring a muchneeded break. The university’s Department of Atmospheric Science analyzes and projects weather patterns that can contribute to active hurricane seasons. Based on their data, researchers are tentatively anticipating lower chances of destructive storms this year. That is certainly good news for our area. The Atlantic Hurricane Season starts June 1 and lasts until November 30, so begin gathering your disaster supply kits now to prepare for possible storms.
