Adams Appointed to Board of Trustees

ohn Adams, of Graceville, has been appointed to fill the District 4 Board of Trustees seat left vacant by the passing of long-time trustee, Charles Holman. Adams has been a West Florida Electric member, living in District 4, for 36 years. Adams is a 1965 graduate of Graceville High School and a 1967 graduate of Chipola College. He also holds a B.S. in Computer & Information Science from Troy University. He is retired from the Florida Department of Transportation where he was a computer analyst for the Office of the Comptroller. During his career, Adams worked for several state agencies including the Department of Environmental Protection. Adams and his wife of 47 years, Vivian Wilson Adams, live on the property where Adams grew up and have two children. One daughter, Gina, and her husband Gil, and a son, Shane and his wife, Ashley. These two children have blessed them with seven grandchildren. In their free time Adams and his wife enjoy fishing and spending time with their family, especially their children and grandchildren. They are also long-time members of First Baptist Church in Chipley. “I look forward to working with the current board members who are fine people and have the best interest of the members at heart,” said Adams. “I am excited to be part of an organization like this one and have a hand in guiding it into the future,” he continued.

sincerely thank the approximately 400 registered members and guests who braved the stormy weather to attend West Florida Electric Cooperative’s Annual Meeting and Member Appreciation Day. It was the first time in my long career that we had inclement weather during the meeting. I also thank the 4,303 members who took time to vote by mail ballot. The three incumbent Trustees were re-elected for another 3-year-term. These gentleman are very deserving of the members’ confidence and trust as shown by their re-election as your representatives on the Board of Trustees. Some irresponsible campaigning occurred in this year’s election. Several thousand campaign flyers were mailed that attacked the Cooperative, Trustees, Attorney and the CEO. The accusations were an attempt to slander the Cooperative’s leadership including the three Trustees running for re-election. I want to assure all member-owners the Board of Trustees have represented the membership with integrity, honesty and have always held management accountable for running the Cooperative in a responsible manner. West Florida Electric is a member-owned, private company. The Cooperative, its Trustees and staff, like all other business entities and individuals, are protected under Florida law from defamation and slander in written or verbal form. WFEC 78th Annual Meeting/Member Appreciation Day Recap

est Florida Electric Cooperative’s 78th Annual Meeting/Member Appreciation Day was held on Saturday, April 25. Despite the rainy weather, many of the cooperative’s loyal members joined us for a health fair and the cooperative’s annual business meeting. During the annual business meeting, members heard from special guest speaker, Gary Smith, PowerSouth Energy Cooperative’s President & CEO. “Why am I here? One of the answers to that question is that about 67 cents of every dollar that you send to West Florida on your electric bill comes on to PowerSouth in Andalusia for wholesale power. Two-thirds of the cost of all the electricity you use comes to PowerSouth,” said Smith. “When you go back and look at your costs at retail over the last 15 years, most of the cost increases that you’ve seen are because wholesale power costs to WFEC have gone up, so we are an important part of your electric bill,” he continued. Smith went on to explain to the crowd why electric rates have increased, citing environmental laws as the number one reason for the increase WFEC members have seen in their electric rates. “The number one rule at PowerSouth is that the CEO does not to go jail to keep your lights on. We are going to comply with all the environmental rules that EPA puts on us. And that causes costs. Over the last four years, we have invested over 400 million dollars into our power plants to keep them environmentally compliant,” said Smith. WFEC Executive Vice President & CEO, Russell Dunaway, also spoke to those gathered in the Graceville Civic Center. Dunaway began his comments by saying that the cooperative has had a great year because no one got hurt. He continued by speaking about the results of the co-op’s member satisfaction survey. He also touched on electric rates and how the cooperative strives to save members money by controlling its distribution costs wherever it can. Some of the examples he used included trimming our right-of-ways from ground to sky,

The information on the map updates every 15 minutes. Street addresses and other identifying information are not presented on the map for privacy and security reasons. Outages are shown as general areas. They are not identified by meter number, address or specific location.

o determine if your cooling system is running at peak efficiency the first step you should take is to decide if it is time to replace your unit altogether. A couple of guidelines to keep in mind are: 1) Is your system 15 to 20 years old? 2) Is it experiencing problems?

“Typically a heat pump will last 12 years or more. Well-maintained units can last 20+ years. A heat pump is like a car – the better you take care of it, the longer it will last,” said Derek Chadwell, WFEC Energy Services. But, when it comes time to make a change, you need the right information to make an informed decision about purchasing a new unit. That’s where the energy experts at West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) come in. We have a list of questions you should ask – and things to consider – before purchasing a new system. By asking the right questions, you will be able to select the HVAC system that is the best fit for your needs. Should I replace all of my HVAC equipment at the same time? If it is an older unit, then yes. You want to be sure that all parts of your system work together properly. Replacing only the outdoor unit or the indoor unit may appear to save money, but it could contribute to service problems later on. A mismatched system may not deliver the energy efficiency or performance you expect from a new unit. What factors should I consider when purchasing a new HVAC unit? Purchase units with high efficiency ratings – 15 SEER or higher and make sure the unit is properly sized for your specific home. Talk to your contractor about doing a Manual J load calculation on the home. WFEC’s Energy Advisors can also perform load calculations for your home. You might also want to talk to WFEC’s advisors about the heat pump rebate program available through the cooperative. This program provides rebates to our members for the purchase of qualifying high-efficiency heat pumps to replace lower-efficiency units. To take advantage of the program, your new unit must be sized properly. A Manual J calculation must be performed by a certified licensed HVAC contractor or a WFEC Energy Services Representative. This load calculation is mandatory to participate in the rebate program. Rebates of $100/ton are available for 13-14 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) units, but are only payable on this size for manufactured homes in lieu of or replacement of electric furnaces; rebates for 15 SEER units are $150/ton and 16 SEER or greater are $200/ton. Rebates are also available on geothermal heat CURRENT LIGHT FLASHES

pumps. What size system do I need? A system that is too small cannot deliver adequate cooling in extreme weather. On the other hand, a system that is too large will provide poor temperature and humidity control. To ensure your new system is the correct size for your home, ask your contractor to perform a detailed load calculation. The energy advisors on staff at WFEC can also perform a load calculation for you at no charge. This calculation determines the capacity of the equipment needed and the correct distribution of air to each room. What’s my house got to do with it? Before you decide on an HVAC unit, you should consider making energy improvements to your home. This will not only reduce operating costs, but also mean a smaller, less expensive HVAC system could do the job. For more information about low-cost and no-cost improvements you can make to your home, visit our website or consult one of WFEC’s energy advisors today. The HVAC system you install should be designed to fit every aspect of your home, so the size, construction, orientation and location of your house all affect the size of the unit you will need. What else can I do to make sure my unit is running at peak efficiency? Having your unit serviced and the duct system inspected annually by a licensed contractor is always a good idea, according to Chadwell. Clearing obstructions away from the air return and trimming brush and weeds away from outdoor units to ensure good air flow is also something that should be done. Checking the thermostat daily to make sure proper settings are being used will also improve your system’s efficiency. It is also important to keep in mind that drastically changing your thermostat settings will not heat or cool your home faster. “We recommend adjusting your thermostat in one degree increments,” said Chadwell. Another thing to remember is that closing unused room doors or vents will not make the other rooms in the house warmer or cooler. Your HVAC system is designed for air to flow throughout the entire house. Blocking air flow could hinder your comfort and decrease the efficiency of the unit.
