W
e’re all on the same team, especially when it comes to wholesale power costs. We all have to do our part to keep power bills affordable. Our job, as your not-for-profit electric cooperative, is to safely deliver clean, reliable electricity at the lowest possible cost. As a member, you can help us achieve this by doing your part to reduce demand for electricity during periods of peak demand. This is because wholesale power is more expensive to produce during “peak periods,” when many people are using electricity at the same time. Typically, these occur from 5 to 9 a.m. on cold winter mornings and 2 to 6 p.m. on hot summer afternoons. If you can shift some of your electricity use to outside of these times, it will help hold down the cost of wholesale power and balance demand. During the winter, you can make the biggest impact by lowering your thermostat a few degrees in the morning. Delaying chores that use large appliances until after 9 a.m. helps, as does setting your dishwasher to run later. You could possibly hold off washing or drying clothes until after the peak time has passed, and family members might also take showers or baths in the evening. In the summer, you can help by bumping your thermostat up a few degrees from 3 to 7 p.m. in the afternoon. Either do the laundry, dishes and bathing earlier or plan those things for later in the evening. Consider using the microwave to cook or grill your dinner outside, if the weather is nice. Even turning off any unneeded lights and electronics, like gaming systems,

ou want your home to be comfortable year-round, especially in hot summers and cold winters. During those times, questions about energy costs arise – balancing comfort and cost in your home doesn’t have to be difficult. It’s a matter of measuring, managing and understanding SEER. Your home’s cooling system is rated by SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It is a measure of a unit’s maximum efficiency, similar to the miles per gallon (MPG) of your car – the higher the number, the more efficient it is. A low SEER rating of your home’s cooling system indicates you’re not as efficient as you could be. It’s important to have a system with higher SEER for greater energy efficiency and MORE savings. Regardless of your HVAC SEER rating, replacing your unit with one rated higher can lower energy costs – as much as 5 to 10% on cooling costs, when everything is installed correctly. e spend a lot of time indoors. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates the average person spends 90% of their life indoors. Additionally, our homes are becoming more energy efficient––they’re better insulated and sealed with less ventilation–– which is great for our energy bills but not so much for indoor air quality. The thought of breathing in pollutants can be scary, but the truth is, indoor air pollution is common and simply unavoidable. The good news is there are ways you can easily improve the air quality of your home. Here are five tips to help you breathe a little easier. Change your air filter often. Clogged, dirty filters reduce the amount of airflow and the HVAC system’s efficiency. When a filter becomes too clogged, the excess dirt and dust are sent through air ducts, adding unnecessary allergens and other unwanted particles into living spaces. During the cooling season (summer months), the Department of Energy recommends replacing your air filter every month or two. This is one of the easiest ways to promote better indoor air quality and energy efficiency. Regularly vacuum carpet and rugs––especially if you have furry friends. The cleaner the home, the healthier the home. Vacuuming carpet and area rugs once a week can greatly reduce the accumulation of pet dander and dust inside your home. Frequently clean other areas that collect dust, like drapes, bedding and cluttered areas. Use vents to remove cooking fumes. Those exhaust fans aren’t just for when you burn the bacon. Stay Fresh: 5 Tips for Better Indoor Air Quality
W
e spend a lot of time indoors. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates the average person spends 90% of their life indoors. Additionally, our homes are becoming more energy efficient––they’re better insulated and sealed with less ventilation–– which is great for our energy bills but not so much for indoor air quality. The thought of breathing in pollutants can be scary, but the truth is, indoor air pollution is common and simply unavoidable. The good news is there are ways you can easily improve the air quality of your home. Here are five tips to help you breathe a little easier. Change your air filter often. Clogged, dirty filters reduce the amount of airflow and the HVAC system’s efficiency. When a filter becomes too clogged, the excess dirt and dust are sent through air ducts, adding unnecessary allergens and other unwanted particles into living spaces. During the cooling season (summer months), the Department of Energy recommends replacing your air filter every month or two. This is one of the easiest ways to promote better indoor air quality and energy efficiency. Regularly vacuum carpet and rugs––especially if you have furry friends. The cleaner the home, the healthier the home. Vacuuming carpet and area rugs once a week can greatly reduce the accumulation of pet dander and dust inside your home. Frequently clean other areas that collect dust, like drapes, bedding and cluttered areas. Use vents to remove cooking fumes. Those exhaust fans aren’t just for when you burn the bacon. Fans help remove fumes emitted while cooking and eliminate unwanted moisture and odors. They may be a bit noisy, but these handy tools can help you improve indoor air quality while you’re

ou want your home to be comfortable year-round, especially in hot summers and cold winters. During those times, questions about energy costs arise – balancing comfort and cost in your home doesn’t have to be difficult. It’s a matter of measuring, managing and understanding SEER. Your home’s cooling system is rated by SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It is a measure of a unit’s maximum efficiency, similar to the miles per gallon (MPG) of your car – the higher the number, the more efficient it is. A low SEER rating of your home’s cooling system indicates you’re not as efficient as you could be. It’s important to have a system with higher SEER for greater energy efficiency and MORE savings. Regardless of your HVAC SEER rating, replacing your unit with one rated higher can lower energy costs – as much as 5 to 10% on cooling costs, when everything is installed correctly. Getting the savings associated with a higher-SEER unit might require a higher initial investment. That’s where West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) can help. e’re all on the same team, especially when it comes to wholesale power costs. We all have to do our part to keep power bills affordable. Our job, as your not-for-profit electric cooperative, is to safely deliver clean, reliable electricity at the lowest possible cost. As a member, you can help us achieve this by doing your part to reduce demand for electricity during periods of peak demand. This is because wholesale power is more expensive to produce during “peak periods,” when many people are using electricity at the same time. Typically, these occur from 5 to 9 a.m. on cold winter mornings and 2 to 6 p.m. on hot summer afternoons. If you can shift some of your electricity use to outside of these times, it will help hold down the cost of wholesale power and balance demand. During the winter, you can make the biggest impact by lowering your thermostat a few degrees in the morning. Delaying chores that use large appliances until after 9 a.m. helps, as does setting your dishwasher to run later. You could possibly hold off washing or drying clothes until after the peak time has passed, and family members might also take showers or baths in the evening. In the summer, you can help by bumping your thermostat up a few degrees from 3 to 7 p.m. in the afternoon. Either do the laundry, dishes and bathing earlier or plan those things for later in the evening. Consider using the microwave to cook or grill your dinner outside, if the weather is nice. Even turning off any unneeded lights and electronics, like gaming systems,
