The Great CEU Round-Up July 25; 7:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Local Ag Extension Office The Florida Turfgrass Association (FTGA) & UF/IFAS have partnered to present the Great CEU Round-Up. Earn up to 6 CEUs across 13 license categories as this statewide program is broadcast to participating extension offices in the panhandle including Bay, Holmes, Jackson, Leon, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa (Jay) & Walton Counties. Until July 20, registration is $15 for university employees, $30 for municipal (government) employees & $50 for industry professionals (contractors/business owners). Starting July 21, the price for walk-in registration increases to $25 for university employees, $45 for municipal employees, and $75 for industry professionals. Registration forms can be picked up at any participating extension office. To those who wish to pay by check- registration cannot be done over the phone. What it protects: the meter-base protector is for large appliances like your refrigerator or freezer, while the plug-in protectors work best for electronics like TVs and computers. What it costs: a meter-base surge protector can be leased for $4.25/ month with a one-time $10 installation fee. The light on the unit will go out if it has taken a hit and needs to be replaced. We will replace it as many times as necessary during the life of the lease. If any damage is incurred, we will do all the necessary paperwork for your claim. This unit is designed to protect electro-mechanical devices with motors and compressors that are typically in large appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, heating and cooling systems, etc. It is not designed to protect sensitive electronics equipment such as microwaves, TV’s, DVD players, etc. or any appliance with a microprocessor. WFEC is offering free installation now through July 31. The meter-base surge protector can be purchased for $124.95 + tax with an installation fee of $10. This unit will only be replaced once without charge to the customer if purchased rather than leased. The in-home plug-strip sells for $89.95 + tax. If this unit takes a hit, there is a one-time free replacement for the consumer. The plug-in unit is secondary protection designed specifically for your sensitive electronics equipment such as those mentioned above. The in-home plug-strip along with the meter-base unit will give you the protection you need for the majority of your home’s appliances and electronics. torm season is officially here and with its arrival we could see extended power outages should a major storm hit our area. Because our members are use to hurricanes and other weather patterns that impact us, many of them have purchased generators for stand-by power. Add cool roof coating. A cool roof coating can reflect up to 85 percent of sunlight, lower the indoor temperature and reduce air conditioning costs. These white or light colored coatings can be applied by roller or brush. 9. Install LED bulbs. LED bulbs use dramatically less energy and last eight to ten times longer than traditional bulbs. Replace any window stripping in poor condition to reduce airflow around windows and add caulk any place air can escape. This helps keep Mother Nature out and conditioned air in. 3. Ingredients: 1 lb. ground beef 1 medium onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 1 (103/4 oz.) can cream of mushroom soup 1 (10 oz.) can enchilada sauce 3/4 cup evaporated milk 3 cups tortilla/nacho chips 1 (4 oz.) can chopped jalapenos (mild), drained 11/2 cups shredded cheese jalapeno pepper slices (optional) shredded lettuce chopped tomato Directions: Combine first 3 ingredients in a 2 quart casserole dish. Cover tightly with heavy-duty plastic wrap & fold back a small edge of wrap to allow steam to escape. Microwave on high 6-7 minutes or until meat is brown, stirring once (this step may be done in frying pan on top of stove). Drain. Add mushroom soup, enchilada sauce & evaporated milk. Stir well. Place tortilla/nacho chips in a 2 quart shallow casserole dish. Spoon half ground beef mixture over chips; layer with jalapenos & half of cheese. Top with remaining ground beef mixture. Cover with plastic wrap, fold back a small corner of wrap & microwave on high for 10-12 minutes or until thoroughly heated. Sprinkle with cheese. Let stand 5 minutes. Garnish with remaining chips & jalapeno slices, if desired. Serve with shredded lettuce & tomato.

Ingredients: 1 lb. ground beef 1 medium onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 1 (103/4 oz.) can cream of mushroom soup 1 (10 oz.) can enchilada sauce 3/4 cup evaporated milk 3 cups tortilla/nacho chips 1 (4 oz.) can chopped jalapenos (mild), drained 11/2 cups shredded cheese jalapeno pepper slices (optional) shredded lettuce chopped tomato Directions: Combine first 3 ingredients in a 2 quart casserole dish. Cover tightly with heavy-duty plastic wrap & fold back a small edge of wrap to allow steam to escape. Microwave on high 6-7 minutes or until meat is brown, stirring once (this step may be done in frying pan on top of stove). Drain. Add mushroom soup, enchilada sauce & evaporated milk. Stir well. Place tortilla/nacho chips in a 2 quart shallow casserole dish. Spoon half ground beef mixture over chips; layer with jalapenos & half of cheese. Top with remaining ground beef mixture. Cover with plastic wrap, fold back a small corner of wrap & microwave on high for 10-12 minutes or until thoroughly heated. Sprinkle with cheese. Let stand 5 minutes. Garnish with remaining chips & jalapeno slices, if desired. Serve with shredded lettuce & tomato.

1. Invest in a high-efficiency heat pump. Of all energy-efficiency upgrades, replacing an electric furnace with a high-efficiency heat pump will give you the greatest return on your investment. 6. Check your ductwork. Your ductwork carries heated and cooled air from the unit to the vents. Cracks in seams causes this air to leak out – costing you money. If your ducts are exposed, use duct mastic (available at home supply stores) to seal ductwork and keep conditioned air where it belongs. 7. Remove window air conditioners in the winter. Air leakage will occur through and around the unit. An alternative is to cover the interior and exterior of the window unit with specially designed covers, which can be found at many stores. 8. Add cool roof coating. A cool roof coating can reflect up to 85 percent of sunlight, lower the indoor temperature and reduce air conditioning costs. These white or light colored coatings can be applied by roller or brush. 9. Install LED bulbs. LED bulbs use dramatically less energy and last eight to ten times longer than traditional bulbs. Because our members are use to hurricanes and other weather patterns that impact us, many of them have purchased generators for stand-by power. Electrocution, fire and carbon monoxide poisoning are all potential consequences of improper generator usage. These tips will help keep you and your family safe from carbon monoxide poisoning, electrical shock, fire injury and property damage.

The Great CEU Round-Up July 25; 7:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Local Ag Extension Office The Florida Turfgrass Association (FTGA) & UF/IFAS have partnered to present the Great CEU Round-Up. Earn up to 6 CEUs across 13 license categories as this statewide program is broadcast to participating extension offices in the panhandle including Bay, Holmes, Jackson, Leon, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa (Jay) & Walton Counties. Until July 20, registration is $15 for university employees, $30 for municipal (government) employees & $50 for industry professionals (contractors/business owners). Starting July 21, the price for walk-in registration increases to $25 for university employees, $45 for municipal employees, and $75 for industry professionals. Registration forms can be picked up at any participating extension office. To those who wish to pay by check- registration cannot be done over the phone. Online registrations using a credit card can be done through the FTGA website. Refer to the website or contact an extension office to find out which CEU categories are available for your license.
