Community Calendar (cont.) The Great CEU Round-Up July 26; 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The Florida Turfgrass Association (FTGA) and UF/IFAS have partnered to present the Great CEU Round-Up. Earn up to 6 CEUs across 14 license categories as this statewide program is broadcast to participating Extension Offices, in the panhandle these include Bay, Escambia, Holmes, Jackson, Leon, Santa Rosa and Walton Counties. Until July 21, registration is $15 for UF/IFAS employees, $30 for municipal employees, and $50 for industry professionals. Starting July 22, the prices increase to $22.50 for UF/IFAS employees, $45 for municipal employees, and $75 for industry professionals. lorida residents become used to our state's weather in the summer in our case, afternoon thunderstorms tend to dominate our weather patterns this time of year. An unfortunate by-product of these storms can be power outages. Here's a reminder about how to report outages you might experience using our automated outage hotline number. Call 1.844.OUTAGE1 (844.688.2431) to report an outage. It's easy to remember and the only number you need!
Service center personnel use the cooperative's automated outage reporting system to determine the location of an outage pinpointed by a member's phone number.
This time of year is a great time to update your WFEC account information with us. Here's why we say that - during outages, a key piece of information used to identify your location is your phone number. We know many of you change your numbers frequently or have gotten rid of your home number and are solely using a cell phone for all communications. When you call from a number that is not linked to your electric account, the system won't recognize your location. This could delay your power restoration during storms. You don't want that to happen and neither do we. That's why it is so important for us to have your most current phone number on file. It's easy to update your account information using our online member portal - you just need a username and password. If you pay your bill online or use our mobile app to make payments, you already have that information at your fingertips and can easily make the changes online. If you don't use the web or mobile app to make payments, simply call the office to get a username and password and you'll be all set to use these convenient ways to pay and to make changes to your account profile online.
Transformers at transmission substations reduce the voltage from transmission levels to sub-transmission levels, typically ranging from 115,000 volts to 34,500 volts. Sub-transmission lines deliver power over shorter distances to distribution substations and large industrial sites. At distribution substations and large industrial sites, transformers reduce the voltage to a lower level, typically 7,200 volts or 14,400 volts.
DISTRIBUTION LINES
The lines typically seen along rural roads and next to homes are generally single phase distribution line, energized at 7,200 or 14,400 volts. Transformers on the utility poles lower the voltage to between 120 and 480 volts to serve residential homes and small businesses. Electric cooperatives own and maintain 2.6 million miles (42 percent) of the nation’s distribution lines.

A Field Guide to Overhead Power Lines Large amounts of power, measured by watts, are delivered by transmission lines. These lines are energized with very high voltage in order to move the power long distances with minimal losses. Insulators on the towers prevent the power from flowing to the towers or the ground.

For the spiced chickpea salad: 2 cans chickpeas 3 tablespoons lemon juice 2 teaspoons dill 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon red chili flakes 4 oz. cherry tomatoes 1 small red onion finely diced 1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro
Add chickpeas, olive oil, lemon juice and spices to a bowl, stir to combine. Allow the mixture to sit for 15 minutes to one hour to let the flavors meld together. Outage Management Technologies Improve Reliability
“
The only things certain in life are death and taxes,” as the old saying goes. Well, we can add another to the list: power outages. An outage can range from annoying to dangerous, depending upon its timing and length. West Florida Electric Cooperative’s primary goal is to deliver the highest possible quality of electric service at the lowest possible price. Perhaps the key measure of quality in the eyes of members is the number of times their lights blink or go out. Let’s talk a bit about how the grid is designed as a backdrop to how technology is improving reliability by reducing blinks and outages. Along the power lines that bring electricity to your home, WFEC installs protective devices in the form of fuses and reclosers (highvoltage circuit breakers). Fuses and Joe Rone, President, Board of Trustees reclosers serve the same purpose as the fuses and circuit breakers in your home. A fuse is a one-shot device. When a fault occurs, the fuse blows and everyone downstream from it loses power. Reclosers are multi-shot devices, meaning they can operate a certain number of times before they stay open and an outage occurs. A common setting is what’s known as a triple-shot. Here’s how that works. A tree limb contacts the power lines and creates a fault. The recloser senses it and opens, creating the first blink. Here’s where a recloser differs from Russell Dunaway, EVP & CEO your home circuit breaker. It waits a certain amount of a time (typically a few seconds), then recloses to try and complete the circuit. If the fault is still there, it opens again. This creates the second blink. Triple-shot settings allow the device to reclose a third time and if the fault is still there, it stays open and the members downstream experience a power outage. However, if the fault clears, like when a limb falls, then the power stays on, avoiding an outage. Outage Management Technologies Improve Reliability
“
The only things certain in life are death and taxes,” as the old saying goes. Well, we can add another to the list: power outages. An outage can range from annoying to dangerous, depending upon its timing and length. West Florida Electric Cooperative’s primary goal is to deliver the highest possible quality of electric service at the lowest possible price. Perhaps the key measure of quality in the eyes of members is the number of times their lights blink or go out. Let’s talk a bit about how the grid is designed as a backdrop to how technology is improving reliability by reducing blinks and outages. Along the power lines that bring electricity to your home, WFEC installs protective devices in the form of fuses and reclosers (highvoltage circuit breakers). Fuses and Joe Rone, President, Board of Trustees reclosers serve the same purpose as the fuses and circuit breakers in your home. A fuse is a one-shot device. When a fault occurs, the fuse blows and everyone downstream from it loses power. Reclosers are multi-shot devices, meaning they can operate a certain number of times before they stay open and an outage occurs. A common setting is what’s known as a triple-shot. Here’s how that works. A tree limb contacts the power lines and creates a fault. The recloser senses it and opens, creating the first blink. It waits a certain amount of a time (typically a few seconds), then recloses to try and complete the circuit. If the fault is still there, it opens again. This creates the second blink. Triple-shot settings allow the device to reclose a third time and if the fault is still there, it stays open and the members downstream experience a power outage. However, if the fault clears, like when a limb falls, then the power stays on, avoiding an outage. Blinks are a nuisance, but they eliminate a lot of extended outages by protecting wires and equipment from serious damage. continued on page 8

lorida residents become used to our state's weather in the summer in our case, afternoon thunderstorms tend to dominate our weather patterns this time of year. An unfortunate by-product of these storms can be power outages. Here's a reminder about how to report outages you might experience using our automated outage hotline number. Call 1.844.OUTAGE1 (844.688.2431) to report an outage. It's easy to remember and the only number you need!
Service center personnel use the cooperative's automated outage reporting system to determine the location of an outage pinpointed by a member's phone number.
This time of year is a great time to update your WFEC account information with us. Here's why we say that - during outages, a key piece of information used to identify your location is your phone number. We know many of you change your numbers frequently or have gotten rid of your home number and are solely using a cell phone for all communications. When you call from a number that is not linked to your electric account, the system won't recognize your location. This could delay your power restoration during storms. You don't want that to happen and neither do we. That's why it is so important for us to have your most current phone number on file. It's easy to update your account information using our online member portal - you just need a username and password. If you pay your bill online or use our mobile app to make payments, you already have that information at your fingertips and can easily make the changes online. If you don't use the web or mobile app to make payments, simply call the office to get a username and password and you'll be all set to use these convenient ways to pay and to make changes to your account profile online.
Transformers at transmission substations reduce the voltage from transmission levels to sub-transmission levels, typically ranging from 115,000 volts to 34,500 volts. Sub-transmission lines deliver power over shorter distances to distribution substations and large industrial sites. At distribution substations and large industrial sites, transformers reduce the voltage to a lower level, typically 7,200 volts or 14,400 volts.
DISTRIBUTION LINES
The lines typically seen along rural roads and next to homes are generally single phase distribution line, energized at 7,200 or 14,400 volts. Transformers on the utility poles lower the voltage to between 120 and 480 volts to serve residential homes and small businesses. Electric cooperatives own and maintain 2.6 million miles (42 percent) of the nation’s distribution lines.

These lines are energized with very high voltage in order to move the power long distances with minimal losses. Insulators on the towers prevent the power from flowing to the towers or the ground.
